First Backpack Hunt Late winter 2012, I’ve given Jared Matthews a call to see if he’s ready for a backpack hunt into the Alpine. When it comes to deer hunting, Jared is always ready to go! So we got together and went over a rough map of where we intended to go which is obviously the most important part of the hunt. If you intend to try backpack hunting, don’t plan to go too far in on your first attempt. Unless you’re heading for country behind the gates, I can only assume that you won’t know the country yet and won’t know exactly what to expect trying to get in and also what to expect when you arrive. We chose a spot well short of our long term ambition, and then put together a list of gear between us that we needed to take. Sharing as much gear as possible makes a big difference, but sometimes you might have to double up for a spare. First was the safety gear including a gps, epirb, safety blanket, compass, lighters and alcohol glasses wipes to help light the fire. Next was some dehydrated food, lollies, condensed milk, water and energy drink powder. We planned to camp near water so Jared put in his canvas water filter that when filled, gave us enough water for 3 days. Friday night came around and we are still double checking all our gear, taking heavy stuff out and finding lighter replacements, reducing the ammunition to the bare minimum and carefully loading the backpacks for good weight distribution. 2am the next morning I’m at Jared’s house throwing his gear in and checking again that we have everything. We head off for a four hour drive, grabbing a big mac on the way past and last chance to have flavoured milk. At this time I didn’t realise how good it would’ve been to grab a magazine. We pull up at our destination before daylight and briefly sat in the car for the sun to shed some light before we set on our way. We had guessed it would take about 4 hours to get to where we wanted, have time to set up camp and go for an afternoon hunt. The sun cracked the ridge and we set sail for the bush. The bush was dripping wet, and so were we within 10 metres. It was fine for the follower, so we had to take turns to share the burden. The regrowth was ridiculously thick, we couldn’t see the outside world and had to trust our plans and the odd opportunity to get a fix with the gps. The first 1500 metres took one and half hours before we took a rest, the next 1500 took one hour before we stopped again. We were starting to ask ourselves if we knew what we were doing. We pushed off again, still swapping the lead to share the wet. Our pack weighed a little over 30kg each and by now I really starting to feel it. Finally the turn downhill to our destination was here. The clouds were closing in and starting to feel a little colder which was fine while still moving. It’s now 1:30pm and arrived at what we were hoping to be a flat that didn’t exist. The creek flat was com-pletely overgrown and there wasn’t any benches to set up on. Then the rain started, so we found the most open spot we could find, moved some timber and set up the tents as quick as possible. This is when I really didn’t appreciate the size of my tent. Sliding in next to my backpack I had nowhere to go. I must admit it was cosy, but days later I found it to be annoying. It rained poured for the rest of the day with a small break in the evening that we took the opportunity to have some dinner and straight back to bed. Six the next morning it’s still dark and raining but we got up and headed off for a hunt. I got about 400 metres away sheltering behind a massive gum tree. The weather was getting worse. By now it was snowing and blowing a gale. I couldn’t see into the next gully and was starting to loose the feeling in my hands and feet. The bush looked good for hunting but the conditions were getting pretty bad. Back to camp I go, wet and cold and straight back to bed. Jared had already been defeated and had already taken refuge in his tent. This is when I found that a little bit more cover or slightly bigger tent would’ve been great. It was a real circus trying to get back into bed without soiling all my dry gear. Another afternoon passed in the sleeping bag, and as was the night before, a small break in the rain to have some dinner just before dark. By this time I’m sure we are starting to go slightly mad. We had already read all of the facts and figures of the nutritional values on all of the packaged food we had. Talking just pure crap was probably the best way to put yourself to sleep and a little hopeful planning for the next day also helped pass the time. One good thing I learnt was with the dehydrated food that you can buy a brand that utilises the pouch as a cooker and a bowl. This means that all you have to do is boil water, tip it into the pouch of contents and clip zip it closed for 10 minutes then tear the top half of the pack off to make it a bowl and hook in. This saves on carrying extra plates in and saves on cleaning up to. We also found that if you going light on lunch then it pays to have a pack that serves two people each. If you want a little extra then consider the mashed potato as hole filler. It tastes fairly good and warms the belly.

Day three, up again this time to misty rain, we head off in different directions to do more research rather than hunting to see if it is worth coming back again. All the ridges were covered in snow and the ground is soaking wet. The odd tree falls in the distance as the wind settles. I found some shelter momentarily behind a tree, the same tree as the day before. Knowing I didn’t want to waste another day and the hunting aspect wasn’t so im-portant I pushed on. Twenty metres from my shelter I see some bracken move. I pause to see a tiny flicker, it was a calf running around a very alert hind. She was eating as hard as she could after two days a horrible weather and obviously knowing what was to come that day. I watched her for five minutes before my scent gave me away, launching straight off the side of the mountain. There wasn’t even a hint of her actions. I moved on to see some spectacular snow covered ridges before the weather started to beat me again. So back to camp I went again, tail between my legs second place to old mate. Jared managed to find a couple of wal-lows before he retreated for the warmth of the sleeping bag. We talked about what we saw and decided that even though we didn’t see much it would probably be worth another look someday. This time we had to get up in the rain for dinner but I was determined to get a fire going to make the camp a little more pleasant. Going through the last of our food, we cooked it up and stood around the fire trying to dry out some of our gear be-fore the rain reduced the fire to smoke. Going to bed early again wasn’t wasted as it gave us plenty of time to reflect on the last couple of days and prepack our gear for an early start out in the morning. 4:30 am we woke up, cooked the remaining dehydrated bacon and eggs which tasted like s##t and dropped the wet tents away to be packed up. By daylight we were off, straight up hill for a leg burning hour. There was still snow on the ground, but the further we got the better the weather got which was a relief. The last leg was the hardest as the sun with no wind made the overgrown ridges hot and steamy. Occasionally busting out of the bush into a head of a gully for a break. By time we go out to the car, there was still snow on the bonnet. I lifted the lid to get some heat on the motor before attempting to start it. We had had about enough for one week. I have never been so well rested only to wreck it by climbing out for six hours. Anyway, the most important thing was we had high quality sleeping bags and tents, reliable cooking gear and patients. If you intend to have a go at this this type of hunting and never done it before, try camping in the fur-thest point of your normal hunting area so you know exactly how long it will take to get in and out and then hunt of further. We still had a good time but it could’ve been tragic if we camped up high. Jared Burke

If you’re into gundogs, then you better come to the next meeting to hear from Carlo Iacobucci who will also have

his Hungarian Vizslar, Demy. Carlo will talk about his dog traits and how he uses them in field trials.
