An Interesting Purchase Last summer on a

whim I agreed to at-

tend the auction at

Mapes Auction

House. Not that I

am inclined to do

the auction scene on

a regular basis but I

had the time and

would be in the

presence of one of

my favorite people.

The large selection

of items available

that evening was

enough to boggle the

mind, but one item

caught my eye, a

poster that con-

tained representa-

tions of old car hood

medallions.

It took quite a pe-

riod of time for the

poster to come up

for bid and of course

there was another

bidder who also

wanted it. I won the

bid at $30.00 plus

premium for a total

cost of $36.00 and

change.

Last month I had the

poster laminated to

try to preserve it as

it had become worn

and somewhat brit-

tle. Not until the

poster had been re-

turned did I have the

time to study the

various cars repre-

sented. I became in-

terested in one of

the badges as it was

for the Hatfield

manufactured by The

Cortland Cart and

Carriage Company in

Sidney, New York.

The Hatfield was

manufactured in

1907 and 1908 and

was a high wheeler

powered by an air

cooled two cylinder

4 stroke engine using

a friction transmis-

sion with chain drive.

The solid rubber

tires were 38 inches

on the front and 40

inches on the rear.

The price for the

Model B a 4 place

vehicle that rode on

a 74 inch wheelbase

was $600.00 in 1907,

the Model C was on

a 101 inch wheel-

base and cost

$750.00.

The Hatfields moved

to Elmira and contin-

ued to manufacture

trucks for a time

Truck Company of

Elmira N.Y started

then designed a cycle

car that was named

the O-We-Go.

As we all know the

last known O-WE-

Go is now owned by

the Northeast Clas-

sic Car Museum in

Norwich New York.

The museum is plan-

ning to honor our

car show with a dis-

play of the O-We-

Go as well as their

Mustang Raffle car

this year!

Spring Flea Market

P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 4 I S S U E 4

This year we are for-

tunate to have been

given a second venue

for our Flea Market, all

the more chance for

us to make the public

know of our exis-

tence.

The Show place in

Binghamton is already

lined out for the ven-

dor spaces, but there

are more entrances

that can be used for

the load-in than in any

other venue that we

have used in the past.

As a result of this ex-

panse we need to have

more help in both the

set up time as well as

during the actual mar-

ket time.

We need to have at

least eight people to

direct the vendors to

their spaces on Satur-

day April 26th so that

they don’t have a total

blockage of the set-up.

Sunday we will need

people to work the

club’s table, answering

questions, handling

problems, and in gen-

eral seeing that the

program works

smoothly. We also will

need monitors on four

doors so that there is

no problems at those

points.

Another 2 to 3 people

are needed to operate

the 50/50 . I am sure that

I have forgotten other

needs for warm bodies.

The fund raiser programs

we run are not meant to

make money for a frivo-

lous purpose but to keep

Tioga Region strong as

well as make it possible

for us to support worth-

while charities in Tioga

County.

Be sure to come out and

make the program a suc-

cess so that we can con-

tinue to be the best car

club in New York!!!!

It was a short time

that I knew this man

who had been a long

time member of our

club, but even in that

short time I came to

know that he had

Although most of you

know of the passing of

Howard

Powell, it would be re-

miss of me to not ac-

knowledge his impor-

tance to the club.

been an important ad-

dition to our history.

It is a sad thing to wit-

ness a strong man who

is victim of Alz-

heimer's, as there is

no cure for this illness.

April Meeting

P A G E 7 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

Our meeting for April

will be April 21,2014

at 7:00 PM at the

Parkview Restaurant in

Owego. The meeting

will be a coffee and

dessert meeting. You

will have the opportu-

nity to order from the

menu the dessert of

your choice as well as

coffee, decalf, tea or

other beverage. We

have had this type of

meeting in the past

and found that most of

our business will be

complete by the tme

that we have received

the order for our

snack. The main point

of this meeting is to

support local business.

I am trying to encour-

age mmore of our

members to attend

the meetings as there

is much to be dis-

cussed about our club.

We have planned a pizza party

for May 3, 2014 as a way for the

members of Tioga and Iroquois

Regions to get to know each

other. The party will be in the

First United Methodist Church

of Endicott New York. The

church is located at the corner

of McKinley and Monroe ,the

first traffic light in Endicott off

exit 67 of route 17. There will

not be any real discussion of the

question of consolidation at this

party, it is proposed only to

help our fellow car enthusiasts

get to know each other.

You may or may not be inter-

ested in the possibility for our

clubs to join forces, but we still

are car crazy people who need

to meet other car owners with

similar interests.

With parades and tours com-

ing up this summer, we will

have a much bigger presence in

the area if we can include cars

other than our own.

Thirty years of tradition is not

something to be ignored and

we want the public to know

that we are a strong group

who are a voice to be heard in

the southern tier.

Lets all get behind this party

and see if we can’t make a

splash!
