“Ding, Dong, thewicked Witch (war-lock) is dead!” I can hear some of myreaders gasping. “Youshould not defame thedead,” they say. This so-calledpreacher didn’t followthat admonition either. He and his “clan” de-filed Matthew Shep-ard’s funeral carryingsigns saying suchthings as “Matt in hell”and “No fags in

heaven”. He and “family” alsoprotested at the funeralsof U.S. Arms Forcesmembers. A motorcycle groupwas organized to keepthe Phelps family fromgetting near funerals.Groups surrounded theWestboro Baptist Chu-rch members at funer-als. And the family ap-peared at two locationsin Cincinnati Carl D. Fox said,Indeed, he protested out

in front of the newheadquarters buildingof P&G with his kidsand grandchildren!They were all wearingor holding disgracefulsigns, even his grand-children.” He remembered itwas after they boughtthe Crazy Fox inNewport. Phelps wasProtesting the fact thatP&G was donating$1,000.00 (or someamount) to their GLBTgroup for that year’sPRIDE Parade. They

were on one side of thestreet and the counterprotesters were on theother. Carl said, “Fredstood on an AmericanFlag atop a RainbowFlag. They had Police

We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models ofhow human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whoselives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, diedof AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hateCrime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

Huey has been inprison now for morethan 18 years. Heattended my church,Church of Our SaviourEpiscopal and recently,I began a corre-spondence with him totry to offer some humannotice to his diresituation.

Out of that corre-spondence, I havedecided to begin aneffort to garner com-munity support for hisnext parole hearingsome time in the nextyear. I would like anyone willing to write asupport letter to theParole Board or

Are you a same-sex couple living in Ohio but le-gally married in another state? Each of you will diesome day and you will want your marriage prop-erly recognized on your death certificate. Last December a federal judge in Cincinnati or-dered the Ohio Department of Health to recognizethe marriages on the death certificates of two menwho died in Ohio but were married out-of-state.Their husbands were listed as the “surviving spouse”on their death certificates. While the decision, Obergefell v. Wymyslo, waswritten broadly, the Court’s ruling was limited. Itonly directly applied to the two couples who broughtthe lawsuit, and to the funeral director, RobertGrunn, who handled the cremation of one of themen. The Ohio Department of Health has interpretedthe Court’s decision narrowly and put out notice tofuneral directors across the state that it only appliesto death certificates filed by Robert Grunn. As a result, it is possible the Ohio Department ofHealth will only recognize marriages between same-sex couples on death certificates filed by Mr. Grunnand no other funeral directors. But the precedent isclear and all married same-sex couples should knowtheir rights and make sure their marriages are rec-ognized at death. The Court’s ruling is in effect, but it is also onappeal. While the appeal is pending, the lawyersrepresenting the plaintiffs want to know about the

He had recentlytransitioned and wasfeeling uncomfortableabout using the stand-ard men’s restrooms atCity Hall. As I learned,Transgender people areoften faced withu n c o m f o r t a b l esituations when usingstandard “male” or“female” restroomsbecause of the looks(and sometimes com-ments) from others. As a City Leader, Iwant every singleemployee, from police

officers to admini-strative assistants, tobring their full self towork. That means nothaving to worry about

where touse the rest-room or thep o t e n t i a llooks orcommentsf r o mothers. And

while the City ofCincinnati has takenmany steps to ensureour employees treateveryone with respect,regardless of theirsexual orientation orgender identify, it’simpossible to controlthe looks or actions ofalmost 6,000 employ-ees. After our discussion,I realized there was avery simple solution tothe problem: Install ag e n d e r - n e u t r a lrestroom. We workedexpeditiously and, in notime, created a lock-able, gender-neutralrestroom that allowed

more people (families,those in wheelchairs, orTransgender people) tofeel more comfortablein City Hall. But there was amistake. After posting aphoto of the progress onsocial media, someonereached out to mebecause of the words onthe new restroom. Thesign read, “FamilyRestroom.” Whilefamilies with smallchildren would mostcertainly use this newrestroom, there aremany who would use italone, including thosewith limited mobility(in wheelchairs) orTransgender people. As the person pointedout, “Family Rest-room” implies the useis for multiple indi-viduals. This can lead todiscomfort when asingle person, LGBT ornot, walks into therestroom. This hadn’tcrossed my mind, but itcertainly made sense.

Caracole begins thisservice via the 340BDrug Pricing Program,a federal program thatrequires drug manu-facturers to provideoutpatient drugs toeligible entities atsignificantly reducedprices. As a Ryan Whitefunded, nonprofitorganization, Caracolereceived its designationas a covered entity from

the Department ofPharmacy Affairs inmid-Marc. Caracole has electedto dispense 340B drugsto patients throughcontract pharmacyservices. In mid-January, Caracolesigned a contract toinitiate pharmacyservices with Pharm-Blue, a leading Con-tract Pharmacy underthe 340B Drug PricingProgram.

together? The desire toaffirm God’sunequivocal love ofLGBT people, now anofficial doctrine formany. Amazing! Wehave come a long wayin the move-ment,haven’t we? Now let’stalk about the value ofinterfaith relationships.First and foremost, it’sabout peace.

Remember allthe wars waged overreligious differences?When we choose torespect each other inour home townassemblies, we giveworld peace a chance.I would also say it’s ashame to overlook therichness and variety ofother traditions. Bymaking friends, we maybe invited to experiencethe beauty of anotherculture. And keep inmind, of course, that it’sa great advantage to

have friends in manyplaces when we seekcollective action for agood cause. Many arethe reasons to buildbridges between us.And it all begins withthe basic realizationthat God is too big to belimited to a singleexpression of love andfaithfulness.

Thetired old lines rolled offabout what the Biblesays and how this is thereason why our countryis “going to Hell in ahand-basket”. I satquietly, since I had beenin these conversationsin the past and foundthat challenging theirpoints of view onlyleads to disagreementsand no point ofunderstanding on theirpart. Finally a cousindeclared, “Let’s askMike. He’s a …”, andhe used an offensivepejorative that hadsomething to do with“fudge”. Anothercousin spoke up saying,“Let’s see if he can talklike a sissy”, to which Isat there consolingmyself that I was in aconvention of fools. While I am wellaware that this incidentwas minor compared tothe sheer and utter
