The Revd. Roy Shaw writes.........................

I want to blow a trumpet, loud and clear. In our churches, it‟s that time of year when we have our AGMs, and while these sound to have all the excitement of a wet weekend in Withernsea, it gives opportunity to look back and see what we‟ve achieved. And I think we‟ve achieved a lot in the last year as a parish- hence the blowing of trumpets. In the past year, our churches have all enhanced their work with children and families; Tockwith got a youth club off the ground for years 6-9, Rufforth went big on their JaM ( Jesus and Me) club and have started a child-friendly communion service; Bilbrough, Askham Richard and Long Marston launched a „Messy Church‟ which travels in rotation round their villages once a month; Tockwith similarly launched a „Messy Church‟; three of our schools now

have „Open the Book‟ ( a 15 minute Bible story assembly); Rufforth continue their monthly lunch club in „The Tankard‟ and Tockwith have just launched a similar venture in ‟The Spotted Ox‟. All in the last year or so. Impressive or what? All this activity is planned, co-ordinated and delivered by folk who already lead full and busy lives- a church member near you- but who all believe that our communities deserve the best we can give in terms of service to them. And while that doesn‟t always mean we‟re banging on about the love of God (although it‟s so marvellous we could go on for ever……) it‟s always motivated by that same love- hence our lunch clubs, and our youth club, and our support of Intercare‟s re-cycling redundant medications, about which I wrote last month . OK, trumpet blast over. We‟re open for business, and our business is serving our communities with the love of God. I hope you hear the echo of that in your village! Your vicar,

Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH

Roy talks in his piece about celebrating. Here at Tockwith there are no end of reasons to be joyful in what great news we are delivering. Last month Tockwith saw its launch of a monthly lunch club mainly to help with what is a hidden epidemic ‘loneliness’. Call it a friendship club if you like. It’s an opportunity for people to get together, meet new people and share conversation over a good meal. For details of when the next meal is contact Mary

on 01423 359003. Thank you to all those who helped make St Crux a resounding success from cake bakers to sandwich makers a total of £850 was raised for church funds.

Mothering Sunday was really well attended. Three children from school did a prayer each, Matthew, Beth and Emma. Reverend Stephen had written a short drama for Tockwith Players to do – as you can imagine it was engaging and humorous. Tockwith school also made 50 small simnel cakes which were delicious and we handed posies to all the mothers/grandmas in the congregation.

On Good Friday 3rd April there will be a special Messy Church with lots of family fun. Come

along to join in with crafts, activities, songs, games all based around a story from the Bible. Here‟s your chance to get creative, spend some quality time together and find out how Jesus' love is broader, deeper, stronger that we can imagine.

The mood becomes more sombre on Good Friday evening when there is a special service conducted in semi-darkness. This will be a truly atmospheric service and marks the beginning of Easter.

The church will be festooned with spring flowers for our special Easter Day service on 5th April. This will be a special family service celebrating the true meaning of Easter. A reminder that the VCC Annual General meeting will be held in church at 7.30pm on Tuesday 7th April. This is a really important meeting as we discuss community engagement. The church, in the last year, has done a lot of work to encourage young people to see how faith fits in with everyday living. We want to share ideas on how we can make the church more meaningful and relevant to to-days society. We value your opinion so please come along. On 26th April welcome members of the Marston Moor Scouts as they share with us a service where they repeat their promise as it is the service nearest to St Georges Day. Watch out for them parading down Westfield Road towards the church. The grass cutting programme is now in place. Ideally it would have be good to have a few more volunteers. Recently I came across an old picture of the church yard when long grass appeared to be the order of the day and I for one would not want to go down that route again. We now have one of the best kept church yards in the area with accompanying flower borders. There are two special concerts that will be held in church in May and October which are sure to be ‘sell out’ events.

If like me you have been gripped by the BBC Singing competition ‘The Voice’. A pair of identical twins calling themselves ‘Classical Reflection’ missed out in the battle rounds. Twin sisters Naomi and Hannah Moxon are a unique act specialising in classical crossover & light opera styles; with songs ranging from "Pie Jesu" by Lloyd Webber's Requiem to "When you wish upon a star" from Disney's Pinocchio. Their special "Twinharmonics" create unique arrangements of well-known classics. Their concert will be on Saturday 30th May and there is already lots of interest in it so do not delay and book your tickets.

Elvis impersonator Steven Caprice was an absolute ‘knock out’ when he entertained us last time and by popular demand he is returning again on Saturday 24th October. It promises to be another sell out so book early to avoid disappointment.

Sandwiched between these two concerts is an evening of light music by the Elysian Singers. This Wetherby based Choir have a repution that has seen them perform at Fountains Abbey, Knaresborough Castle and many local churches. The choir does have some members that live in Tockwith and Long Marston. It is a pleasure to welcome the Elysian singers to Tockwith. nrw

'Over a hundred people joined us this year for our Annual Village Quiz in aid of Ebenezer's Orphanage which was held at the School on March 6. We raised a total of £1338. We want to say a very big thank you on behalf of the children of Ebenezer's to all those who attended and supported the evening. At the moment they are desperate for money to help them save lives and educate and care for the children. Their belief is that 'every child should have somewhere to call home, and someone to call Mother'. Every penny raised goes directly to care for the children. If you are interested in sponsoring a child through education, the cost is £12.50 per month (contact Caroline Alliott on 01423 358291) and this can equip a child for employment which means they can then care for themselves and their families. Otherwise their future can be very bleak.' Caroline

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Tockwith Festival

Tockwith Festivals are taking a break in 2015.

Six years of continued growth led to 2014 being the best year yet for the Tockwith Festival. Winning the Duke of York Award for Community Initiative in 2013 spurred the organisers on but now it’s time for a well earned break. It takes a lot of people a lot of volunteer time to run the event, not only on the actual event day but in the year running up to it, whilst everyone else is getting into the ale and the music, a small army is making sure it all stays on track!

Taking a break this year will give trustees and the committee time to evaluate the Festival’s objectives and direction, whilst at the same time bring in new members to strengthen the main functions in the organising team. We are keen to get on board people from the community who are skilled or interested in IT, Social Networking and Marketing/Promotion or indeed anyone who is good at lugging heavy things and pulling pints! Those with connections or activity in the music world are very much welcome as the Festival is now known as much for the quality of the bands as the quality of the beer. Together we look forward to coming back better and stronger and delivering a quality event again in 2016. Mark your diaries; 14th May. So for now, keep an eye on our Facebook page for other Festival events throughout the year and we’ll be back after our break; mine’s a pint! If you would like to get involved with the festival please mail [email protected] for details

Tockwith C.E. Primary School

We are really proud and pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Eco-

schools Green Flag status for a third consecutive time. We are one of only

fifteen schools in North Yorkshire who hold Green Flag status, in fact there are

only two other schools who have held the flag on three consecutive occasions.

This is in main due to the hard work carried out by the schools Eco-Warrior

team, who monitor nine key environmental aspects at the school. They particularly

focus on energy, litter, healthy living, water, transport, biodiversity, school

grounds and global citizenship. The school have also held three Fairtrade sales a

year over the past six years which has enabled the Eco-Warrior team to have the

resources required to maintain the award over such a long period.

Page 10: April 2015 Cover - Tockwith...year running up to it, whilst everyone else is getting into the ale and the music, a small army is making sure it all stays on track! Taking a break this

As most of you will be aware it was Comic Relief on Friday 13th March and we had

a fantastic day in school raising a massive £366.64.

We held a Bake off and the winning cakes are displayed below.

We also held a Cake sale and children contributed to take part in a variety of red

nose day themed activities.

At the end of March the school celebrated Easter with a delicious Easter lunch

served to both children and parents. This was followed by a wonderful Easter

service in Tockwith Church.

School Closes for Easter on Friday 27th March and re-opens on Tuesday 14th

April.

When we return from the Easter break we are really looking forward to our open

day which has been designed to showcase the art and creativity within the school.

It will be held on Thursday 23rd April and will culminate in a showing of the Year

3/4 production, The Button Box.

We are really looking forward to sharing our artistic talents.

THOUGHT4TOMORROW Personal reflections by Henry Woods

My thoughts about the mission of our Church were sharpened by reading last week‟s Church Times reporting the proceedings of the General Synod. The general impression tends to suggest that items for discussion or the legal business of amending Canon Law or the guidance to the Dioceses are conducted in a formal manner. I am not about to launch criticism of the formality, but the items on their agenda are a cause for concern or should be. Viewed from the other end of the telescope, the Parish end, one can but wonder at the choice of priorities by those who formulate an agenda about whether the Devil should be mentioned in the Baptism Service. This may be a vital topic, but I would hope that the General Synod would concentrate on the matters with which PCCs//VCCs have to grapple month in month out. Everyone will have their own idea of a better agenda but I will give mine:-

Guidance and support for mission, including leaflets and a campaign strategy to recruit new members at Parish level.

Masterminding a Fundraising campaign at both national and parish levels – both the FTSE100 , the village store and the pub.

Creating a PR programme as a pattern for use at Parish level to ensure that stories are fed to local media and a Parish magazine/newsletter.

Ensuring that the public Funds allocated to support repairs are distributed fairly and mainly to parish churches both urban and rural.

Encouragement and support for church schools so that faith is actively projected to all the children. That would keep the General Synod busy and focussed on the parish which is for me the most important part of the Church. It is also the key to bringing more people to attend services and in due course to play a more active role in the life of the parish. This is the difficult part but we should not be deterred because it is such a challenge. Our Lord is always posing challenges to those to whom he spoke in the New Testament, and does so today. I think many of us will appreciate the overall importance of the parish. This is where the action takes place and on whom the other elements of the Church‟s structure depend. I am confident that this a truth universally acknowledged no only within our parish but also throughout the wider Church community. See you in Church.

Do you know anyone that has just moved into the village? Our aim is to make contact with them as soon as possible and tell them what we have to offer as a Church family. Our introduction is by way of delivering a Village and Parish News free of charge. Contact any member of the Church Council if you think someone may not have been seen.

DONATE A BIBLE

We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms. We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might

wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one. If anyone would like to dedicate a Bible they are £15 each and we put the name inside the Bible cover. Please contact Angela Jenkins on 01423 358067.

Did you know that Tockwith

Church has a Facebook page?

It is an excellent way to keep in touch

with the local community regarding what is

happening in church. It’s a great way to

keep in touch with busy mums and dads and

remind them of events that are coming to

church.

We pop lots of photos on of various events at church - even

Elvis is on our page!!!

Tick Tock Daycare Ltd are really excited to announce that the ground

works for their new building will commence during the Easter break. The builders will begin delivering materials to site the week commencing 23 March, as this will generate more traffic in and out of the car park we ask that you please take extra care. As space will be an issue, during the week please refrain from parking around the school car park entrance (from the pedestrian gate to the bollards just the other side of the car park), during the hours of 8am – 6pm. Please also ensure that the yellow markings are left clear to ensure that the school bus can park. During this time parents have been given permission to use the sportsfield car park, we would just ask that care be taken while using the car park especially on Thursday as a dance class is held after school in the sports building.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Give me a sense of humour, Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke,

To get some humour out of life, and pass it on to other folk

Out West A devout cowboy lost his Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later a cow walked up carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn't believe his eyes. He took the book out of the cow's mouth, raised his eyes heavenward, and exclaimed, "It's a miracle!" "Not really," said the cow. "Your name was written inside the cover.” Sermon A pastor, known for his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and leave during the middle of his message. The man returned just before the conclusion of the service. Afterwards the pastor asked the man where he had gone. "I went to get a haircut," was the reply. "But," said the pastor, "why didn't you do that before the service?" "Because," the gentleman said, "I didn't need one then." Heaven An exasperated mother, whose son was always getting into mischief, finally asked him, "How do you expect to get into Heaven?" The boy thought it over and said, "Well, I'll just run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the door until St. Peter says 'For Heaven's sake, Dylan, come in or stay out!'" Go careful A husband, the owner of a new car, was reluctant to allow his wife to drive his prize possession, even to the shops, which were only a few streets from home. After she insisted, he finally relented, cautioning her as she departed, "Remember, if you have an accident, the newspaper will print your age."

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

With Easter in mind !!

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

Do you have information or a concern about something or someone that you think the police should know about then contact us on [email protected] alternatively call 101. For those callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the service can be accessed via text phone on 18001 101. The Parish Council has a permanent agenda item for Police Matters at every Parish Council meeting so if you have any matters to raise with the police you can also contact a Parish Councillor. Their contact details are on Parish Noticeboards.

There has been a joint operation between Knaresborough Police and the RSPCA following information received about a location near York where stolen sheep were being kept. As a result over 60 sheep were seized and possible offenders identified. This is an on-going case so unfortunately full details cannot be disclosed. This is a success story as it shows how a member of the public’s suspicions has led to an arrest.

Poachers are still coming to our area; they have been seen in Hutton Wandesley, Farnley and just north of Boroughbridge. Any information on vehicles etc. would be appreciated.

There was a burglary in North Rigton and due to real time information a vehicle was seized and the driver arrested. Unfortunately the second vehicle made its escape but work is on-going to identify this person. A good news story!

Knaresborough Police are visiting schools within the area to highlight the dangers of people parking on the zigzags outside schools. This is primarily an educational exercise but there is new legislation coming in where offenders can be prosecuted for stopping, waiting or parking at or near a school entrance. It only takes a second to lose concentration and as a result a child can end up in hospital.

An elderly lady in Tockwith who was robbed of her life savings by a family member has seen that family member sent to prison for a four year sentence. It took over two years to collate all the evidence and due to the callous nature of the offender the whole community of Tockwith rallied together and ensured that the victim still had a good quality of life. A big thank you to the residents of Tockwith who played an active part in the welfare of the victim.

Vehicle crime at local beauty spots is on the increase. Please take valuables with you or lock them in the boot of your vehicle. Never leave them on show - this includes the leads used for phone chargers, satnavs etc..

Beware of bogus callers - if in doubt phone the company they are supposed to be representing or call NYP and/or Trading Standards. Warn other members of your watch scheme. (Don’t use a phone number given by the caller!)

TOCKWITH WITH WILSTROP PARISH COUNCIL

Parish Council meetings are, as a rule, held on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are not normally held in August or December. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings and they start at 7.30pm and are held in Tockwith Church. The minutes of previous Parish Council meetings can be found on its own web site at www.tockwith.gov.uk. The Clerk can be contacted on 359825 or

email [email protected]. The Parish Council is happy to provide links to local organisations, clubs or charitable bodies so that they can share information to the wider community. Please contact [email protected] if you would like a link. It would be a good time to update your contact telephone numbers and give details of your meeting times etc. We will use the web site to distribute important information about matters that effect the Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish area. Included on the website is information about the services offered by both North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate Borough Council. This includes advise regarding anti-social behaviour. There remain two vacancies on the Council one each for the Cowthorpe and Wilstrop Wards. Residents will have received their annual Council Tax Demand. The Parish Council are pleased to announce that through careful management of the budget it has not increased its precept demand for the fourth consecutive year. The money we receive is used to pay for the clerk‟s salary, maintain land and property under the ownership of the council and give grants to various community based organisations. It has been suggested that the Parish Council has failed to consult with the village regarding the proposed housing development between Southfield Lane and Westfield Road. Many are unaware that this land has been ear-marked for building for well over a decade and was the only land within the village that was drawn into the Harrogate Local Development Plan, other areas of land like that to the rear of Prince Rupert Drive and Marston Road between Ralph Garth and Sike Beck previously been discounted. There will be little benefit having a public meeting until we see whether Linden Homes have addressed any of the concerns the Parish Council and many residents raised at the public exhibition. To have a meeting before would raise too many hypothetical questions. It is therefore better to wait until the detailed plans are submitted. Once the developer has submitted plans we can circulate this information and consult the wider community.

Have you seen the phantom dog poo flinger? Every so often we have to prick the conscience of dog owners and highlight the recurring problem of poo filled doggy bags being thrown in hedges or just left on the grass verge. This is as irresponsible as allowing your dog to foul the grass verges and footpaths. Dog waste can be disposed of in dog waste bins or litter bins or put in your dustbin at home. Dog Wardens have

been asked to make extra patrols. If caught allowing your dog to foul, you can either get an „on the spot‟ fine of £50 or a summons to appear in court. Prosecution could mean a £1,000 fine.

The Parish Council have received a report regarding the flooding in the New Row area of Marston Road. They are very frustrated at the slow progress in dealing with the matter. The consensus by all those trying to solve the problem is that an independent report should be commissioned to recommend a solution. It has taken almost a year to come to that decision which is unacceptable as the residents affected see it as little or no progress in almost four years with no reduction in the risk of flooding. Sand bags remain un-replenished and others are still outside the properties after several months. From the initial feeling of optimism that something might be done after the local MP Nigel Adams raised the problem, there is now a feeling of anger with the residents in this section of houses firmly of the opinion they have been completely let down. The Parish Council are bemused that there are still unresolved issues regarding the responsibilities for doing the flood prevention work and hope collectively those in a position to do something take some positive action very soon. The Parish Council supported Community First Response Scheme has reached its next stage with nine local residents undertaking training in emergency first aid and the use of a deliberator. As a community we should be really grateful that these people have volunteered to be on call. This scheme is endorsed by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and all CFR‟s have been Disclosure and Barring Service checked and will carry official identification. It is a valued service but one we all hope we do not have to use. It has been a really late Spring this year and the daffodils which the Parish Council planted with the help of volunteers in late Autumn last year are showing signs of coming into flower. Please respect those that have been planted on the grass verges by not driving on them. The Parish Council have enquired about participating in the Community Speed Watch pilot programme which will run at up to 50 sites across York, Harrogate and Selby where local people have already registered a concern about speeding vehicles. We continually complain about speeding cars in Tockwith and Cowthorpe.

A NOTICE RE: BAPTISMS

Baptisms take place within our normal services – usually a service which will be a Holy Communion plus Baptism. This is because Baptism signifies a welcome into the church, and the beginning of a Christian journey. It only makes sense therefore, if this sacrament takes place within the worshipping community, who along with the family, welcome the child into God‟s great

family. Baptism can only take place when a priest is present at a service, and if you are thinking of having your child baptized, you need to give a long „lead time‟ to the clergy. It may not be possible for a priest to be available on the Sunday you have in mind, and you may need to be flexible over the date, although every effort will be made to meet your wishes. In the first instance, please contact one of the Wardens to arrange a date. Please note: Allocated Baptism dates for 2015 - 12th July and 13th September

The Village Hall management committee secured grant funding from Yorventure recently to help with more energy efficient management of the Village Hall. The benefits to our users include a new A rated fridge and freezer, an automatic tap in the kitchen which conserves water and is more hygienic with its hands free operation. The installation of a smart thermostat ensures our

users are warm when the hall is in use but energy is no longer wasted when the hall is empty. A rainwater harvesting system saves on our metred water use and the gardener and plants are much happier too with the unchlorinated water. I feel sure that our treasurer will have something to smile about too when the first energy bills reflect the savings this project has made to the Hall’s finances. We are very grateful for the support Tockwith Village Hall has received from Yorventure with this and previous projects that have contributed so much to the development and sustainability of our hall.

Marston Moor Walkers

After all the self-congratulatory back slapping over never having been rained off and praise for the weather gods who always smile on us etc. an inevitable hubris had built up; significantly for the thirteenth walk. It rained this time! People fastening their boots, hearing the deluge on their roof could well have started to unfasten them, probably… Anyway there were only three brave souls out on the muddy tracks twixt Marston, Healaugh and Bilton, but, if they set off in the wet, they certainly returned in the dry. Deryck had done the same route on the morning as a recce. “I‟ve always wondered where this path went,” he said, as we went up the hill behind Long Marston village hall. It went deep into the heart of the Ainsty leaving roads and habitation far behind. It crossed a rolling landscape to achieve what seemed considerable long distance views. It is, in fact, one of the finest rambles in our area, which we shall revisit after harvest. The next walk will start from the Ox. It has no designated leader so will probably be a stroll down to the river and back to the pub. And this will be on 13th April (the second Monday of the month). Meet at 2.00pm. At the Spotted Ox. All welcome. Please come. Get in touch the week before for an update. Contact: Pete Pozman 01423 359731 07854313112

All Fools’ Day

In years gone by, the rules surrounding April Fool were this: between midnight and noon on 1 April, everyone is ‘fair game’ to be made a fool of. It is the morning of the practical joke. But the aim is not just to discomfort the victim: he must be tricked into taking action himself, sent on a ‘fool’s errand’. And so children would be sent to the dairy for a pint of dove’s milk, or to the bookseller for The Life of Eve’s Mother. Practical jokes on a bigger scale were played: in 1860 a vast number of people received an official looking invitation to the Tower of London that read: ‘Admit the Bearer and Friends to view the Annual Ceremony of Washing the White Lions.’ Precisely the same trick had been played in 1698. Then, on the stroke of noon, tradition decrees, April Fools is finished. If anyone attempts devilry thereafter, even while the clock is still striking, it recoils on his own head. A child would then race through the sing-song formula : ‘April-Fool-Day’s-past-and-gone-you’re-the-fool-and-I-am-none!’

COWTHORPE COMMUNITY FORUM

Communication & Action for the mutual benefit of the Community of Cowthorpe

Photograph courtesy of HBC Media Dept.

On Tuesday 24 February 2015, Cowthorpe Community Forum was represented at a reception held in the Council Chambers of Harrogate Borough Council to celebrate the 2014/2015 Community Chest and Arts and Heritage grant schemes. Twenty six community and voluntary groups in the Harrogate district were successful and were awarded grants totalling £54,057 from Harrogate Borough Council. We were welcomed to the event by the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Harrogate; Council Leader Richard Cooper; Cabinet Member for Culture, Pat Jones; and members of the grants panel. We were successful in our application for £2,800 to fund a Community Healthcare Initiative for Cowthorpe which will see the installation of a Community Access Defibrillator, the completion of associated life- saving training, First Aid Courses and ‘Look After Your Health’ presentations during the next few months. We will provide more news on this project as we progress. Jacqui Marsden. CCF Facilitator

THE CALLING Stephen Brown reviews a DVD about religious murders

The Calling (Certificate 15) out now on DVD, isn‟t so much a whodunit as a whydidhe? We‟re told fairly soon that the serial killer is Simon Peter (played by Christopher Heyerdahl), a Roman Catholic faith-healing mystic. It‟s a rather positive twist on the mass murderer genre. This gentle, likeable person always gives his terminally ill victims a choice. He can, if they so wish, accelerate their way to heaven rather faster than they themselves had anticipated. His methods for doing so, however, remain in his hands and are excessively gruesome. Let‟s just say severed heads and ripped-out stomachs feature but more especially their mouths have been manipulated, after death, to spell a Latin word with religious connotations. It‟s not exactly the snowy wastelands of the Coen Brothers‟ Fargo meeting the deadly sinners of Se7en, much as you suspect it would like to be. Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon) is the detective on the case. In sleepy Fort Dundas, Ontario she views the world through Scotch-coloured glasses, mugs and cups. In fact, any receptacle will do. You could argue

that this series of grisly murders is a wake-up call for her; a stimulant that isn‟t bottle-shaped. Hazel and colleagues are certainly bright enough to spot there‟s a religious dimension to the murders, although the word ritualistic might fit the bill better. This is where Father Price (Donald Sutherland) comes in handy – twice – to explain the plot. He‟s well used to this role, of course. Sutherland performed a similar service in the Kennedy conspiracy movie JFK but with a touch more accuracy than his professor of linguistics does here. You know Explanation No. 1 is going to be dodgy when he starts by telling Hazel that the Bible as we know it was “composed” around 400 Anno Domini. Not quite that simple, Father. And then he speaks of an ancient oral tradition requiring twelve disciples willing to sacrifice themselves so that one can be “set free”, meaning resurrection. Later, he colludes with Simon Peter‟s lethal mission, informing us that God requires these sacrifices for forgiveness to ensue. Theological quibbles aside, does the film stack up either emotionally or as an above-average thriller? Certainly there are shock moments but in between times not even the efforts of a talented cast pump new life into this particular phoenix. Its finale has distinct elements of films first-time director Jason Stone probably grew up knowing like the noirish Klute or even The Silence of the Lambs. Not bad examples for him to emulate. Next time perhaps

Then and Now

For a time support for Methodism in Tockwith was stronger than that of the Church of England. The first Wesleyan chapel was built 1798 for a cost of £600. This is now Melbourne House and was for a time the Post Office and village shop. The most recent chapel was built in 1875 at a cost of £1461 next to the existing schoolroom (1823) on a site given by Thomas Ripley. The Wesleyan Sabbath School had the foundation stone laid by Jabez Woolley of Leeds on August 14th 1861 who also designed the £200 building. The burial ground to the rear of the chapel contains memorials to John Edwin Wood (1824-90) who as you heard last month ran a private school in the village. It was given in his memory by ‘his old pupils’. He was a local preacher and had the chapel balcony built in order that his pupils could attend Sunday services. The rose window to the front includes the letters TS (Tockwith School)

The Chapel was considered one of the largest Methodist Churches in the ‘Ainsty’ and noted for its ornate brick work. In recent years the Chapel has been converted into two residential properties but much of the exterior look of the building has been retained.

BATTENBERG CAKE Oven 180c – Bake for 20-25 minutes 200g Soft butter 200g Caster sugar 3 Large eggs 175g Self-raising flour 50g Ground almonds ½ tsp Baking power ¼ tsp Almond extract 2 tbsp Milk To Assemble- 200g Apricot Jam 500g Block of marzipan Grease 1 x 20cm square baking tin. Line the tin with foil, making a strong fold in the centre to separate the sponges. Cover the foil with baking parchment. Beat the eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, then beat in the flour, baking powder and almond extract. The batter needs to be dropping consistency. Add a little milk if too thick. Halve the batter by weighing and dividing equally into separate bowls. Fold the red colouring through one and the yellow colouring through the other. Pour the batters into each side of the tin and bake for 20-25 mins. Leave to cool. To assemble- Trim the edges of each sponge then cut each sponge in half lengthways so you have 4 long rectangles. Warm the jam in a small pan, then brush along a long side of each sponge. Stick the jam sides together to create the chequerboard effect, then brush the sides and top with more jam. Roll out the marzipan so it is wide enough to wrap around the sponge. Brush the loaf all over with remaining jam and then tightly wrap the marzipan around the sponge.

MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB At their meeting on Tuesday 24th February 2015 Mr Malcolm Coward introduced Mr Uell Kennedy to give his talk “The History of Tartan”. Mr Kennedy was dressed in a modern kilt complete with appropriate jacket and sporran. The dictionary gives tartan as a woollen cloth woven in stripes in many colours, the lines being at right angles. Not all tartan cloth is wool nowadays some for example is on silk. The origin of the word tartan is uncertain but the peoples of the north of Britain, particularly north of the Antonine Wall wore a type of kilt made of tartan in Roman times. The oldest tartan in Scotland is the Falkirk Tartan which was found to

date to about 400AD and is in an Edinburgh Museum. The origin of tartan itself is obscure but is thought to be in the Middle East or even further east. There is evidence of tartan in Iraq in the period 1200 – 700 BC. Tartan is associated with Scotland and was worn in specific patterns by Clans and their Kin until after the Jacobite Revolution in 1745 when it was banned. The ban was lifted in 1782 by which time most of the patterns were lost. New patterns were designed in Paris and the wool woven in Huddersfield. Rules for the use of tartan have been formulated but are not followed closely and almost anything goes now. The designs are registered in the (new) Scottish Parliament and some are copyrighted. Two new tartans are registered each week on average and there are 20,000 registered. Tartan is a worldwide design used by Clans, Societies, Companies, Counties such as Yorkshire and many other groups. The talk was illustrated with a power point display of tartans and kilts together with numerous actual examples of tartan materials. After questions members thanked Mr Kennedy in the usual manner. The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in Long Marston Village Hall, which has a good car park. New members and guests are welcome, contact the Secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358 393.

Religious employees 'under pressure' to hide faith

Religious employees feel under

pressure to keep their beliefs and

faith symbols hidden at work, a

watchdog has found.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission found those who were openly Christian complained of being

mocked as bigots, sometimes because of their stance on same-sex relationships.

Jewish and Muslim workers reported finding it hard to get time off work for religious reasons.

A total of 2,483 organisations and individuals took part in the research.

The watchdog found widespread confusion and misunderstanding about the laws protecting freedom of religion or belief. The research will inform a report on the adequacy of those laws and it is also looking to issue guidelines for employers and those who provide services to the public.

'Complex picture'

The highest number of responses came from Christians, some of whom say they fear their religion is losing its place in the workplace and in society more generally.

Some Christian businesses reported being "in turmoil" over whether actions might breach the Equality Act, aimed at preventing discrimination in the workplace.

Its research also revealed that atheists and humanists who responded to the survey said they had experienced unwanted conversion attempts and felt excluded from company events held in religious buildings.

Both Christian and humanist parents said their children had been ridiculed at school.

Examples cited by people who responded to the survey include a Catholic who was unable to wear a crucifix or rosary while others had nose rings and piercings and a law firm manager who faced objections to organising a Christmas party as it promoted religion.

Mark Hammond, CEO of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said the research showed a "complex picture" of different opinions and experiences.

"What came out strongly was the widespread confusion about the law, leading to some resentment and tensions between groups and anxiety for employers who fear falling foul of what they see as complicated equality and human rights legislation," he said.

"How the law deals with religion and other beliefs in work, in providing services and in public debate has become a matter of considerable controversy."

However, he said they also found employees who had had positive experiences of "diverse and inclusive workplaces".

Christian Aid week is coming!

11 -17th May This year’s Christian Aid week focuses on the human cost of conflict. In some of the toughest places in the world Christian Aid is helping people caught up in conflict to get the basics; medical care, food and shelter. We help keep people safe and heal their emotional scars, providing the expert support they need. When the fighting stops, we are still there, helping communities walk the long road to recovery; from building homes where families can feel safe to making sure people who've lost everything can earn a living again. And we work to tackle the causes, not just the consequences, of conflict. By coming together we demonstrate that God’s love is infinitely greater than hatred and violence. We can help give people across the world a life free from fear. Please give generously when the collectors come. Christian Aid collects once a year and this is their main source of income.

From the Tockwith Christian Aid Collectors.

BBC Two will be showing the Gospel of John in three parts this Easter. Produced by the Lumo Project, this programme is part of a bigger project to create four feature-length films – one for each Gospel account – that tell the story of Jesus using the Gospel texts as script. Hannah Leader, Producer of the Lumo Project said, “We use the very latest historical research to recreate Palestine of the First Century as authentically as possible. We break with the stereotypical tradition of a westernised Jesus and his life story and present it as it really was 2000 years ago.“Never before has a public broadcaster shown a complete Gospel on film. For many, it will be the first time they have experienced the telling of the gospel story word for word.” To coincide with and support this landmark broadcast, the Lumo Project have created resources for churches and schools. Find out more at www.lumoproject.com, and check TV listings for programme times.

Tockwith Juniors on Tour The U13 and U16 squads from Tockwith Juniors FC will be away on their annual European Tour at the end of the month. Playing a number of matches against local Dutch and Belgian opposition, the boys and girls will be truly flying the flag for Tockwith and Yorkshire. This expanded tour follows the successful visits by the older team in 2014 to Tilburg and Turnhout and to Rugby in 2013.

The standard of football is always very good and we get to play at some high quality venues. Our hosts extend a most generous welcome to players and parents alike. The trip will be capped off with a visit to Ajax stadium.

Jottings from the Methodist Manse …… From the Methodist Minister Gail Hunt

The sky was heavy with black clouds which soon obscured the sun. Motorists promptly put their headlights on just ahead of a sudden downpour of rain. Shoppers started to hurry along the pavements struggling to put their umbrellas up, and busy mums pulled their children from the temptation of jumping in the quickly developing puddles. My husband David and I too started hastily walking away from the town, following the path that stretched across Harrogate Stray, back to shelter of the car.

In only a few moments we had become cold, wet and uncomfortable. It had started out as “one of those days”, and it looked as if wasn’t going to get any better. However as we moved along the path which passed through the green open areas, the rain stopped as quickly as it started and sunlight started once again to filter through the clouds, lighting up the golden and purple crocuses which grew out of the grass like embroideries on a tapestry. From the hard soil of winter they had lifted their heads to remind us of the new life that was on its way, and of the presence of Gods handiwork. Then I remembered a different road, one that we read of at Easter – the road to Emmaus, where another two people set out walking under a cloud. The two may well have been husband and wife, although we can’t say for sure. However what we are in no doubt about is that as they walked together, they encountered the very presence of Christ walking alongside them. Read the story for yourself you will find it in Luke 24: 13-24. You can feel their downcast spirit as you follow the conversation, but as they spoke the visitor that joined them would soon change the walk along that road forever. So as Christ walked down the Emmaus road all those years ago, he is surely walking down the roads you and I are walking along too - whether that is across Harrogate stray, through the center of Tockwith or wherever you travel. Just a thought! Happy Easter - The Lord is risen!

Every blessing

Gail
