Unit No. 348 Auxiliary member Mary Hankins places a candle in honor of one of the four chaplains as a bell sounded in solemn remembrance.

The opening of the February 2015 meeting at Olson-Grinde Post No. 348 in DeForest was like no other. Along with Auxiliary Unit No. 348, the Post membership commemorated the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Dorchester and the four im-mortal chaplains who sacrificed their lives for men of all faiths. Led by Post Commander Bill Ridgely and Post Chaplain Greg Suchomel, a very fit-ting and distinct Memorial Ceremony was conducted following American Legion protocol. The observance was conducted by six Legionnaires and four auxiliary members, while the remaining attendees participated in prayer and meditation. Also present was Dr. Sue Borden, Superintendent of the DeForest Area School District, who shared the profound impact the ceremony had upon her. One aspect of the historic story that stood out for her was the educational experience each of the four men embarked upon to become chaplains after having elected to do something else previ-

ously in their lives. The affect of the Four Chaplains

story had upon those present was discussed at great length following the meeting. It is significant that a single moment in time from 70 years ago can still impact our lives today.

Dorie Miller Post No. 546 Helps Racine Homeless Veterans

The Reverend George Fox (Method-ist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Re-formed) and Father John Washing-ton (Roman Catholic) will not be forgotten as their actions have left an indelible and solemn mark upon us.

Smiles and soap suds were seen, friendships were formed and fun was had on Tuesday, February 24th at the “Laundry Love” to assist Homeless veterans in Racine. 8,089 quarters were used to run 467 loads of clothes and bedding through the wash. Mem-bers of the Dorie Miller Post No. 546 took part in the activities. The next Laundry Love is scheduled for Tues-day, April 28 from 4 to 8 PM at the Velvet Touch Laundromat in Racine.
