T his is the story of a boy whose father doesn’t

understand or connect with him, who likes to wear his mother’s high heels when no one’s looking.

At New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy, a teacher sees something in this boy and, in an acting piece, casts him as a female wrestler.

It changes everything. At 20, with newfound

courage, this boy-turned-man begins performing in drag and realizes he’s found his place: onstage, in 4-inch heels, feather boas and lush false eyelashes.

When he’s back in his man suit — heels, makeup and glitter gone — he’s also back to feeling insecure.

This could be the back story for Simon, the drag queen who performs as Lola

in the 2013 musical Kinky Boots. In reality, it’s the story of J. Harrison Ghee, who, since November, has played Simon/Lola in the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical.

Growing up in in Fayetteville, N.C., Ghee (as in “gee-whiz”) was a self-described “bold child who questioned every-thing” and never did find a comfort level with his father, a Southern Baptist pastor with doctorates in history and philosophy. But he always enjoyed performing — everything from leading prayers and singing in church to using a microphone.

“I always say that when I was born, I didn’t come out crying — I came out singing.” With Kinky Boots, he says, “What I am living through right

“I always say

that when I was

born, I didn’t

come out crying

— I came out

singing.”

now, these are the moments that I only dreamed of.”

Ghee’s mother, who also sings, recently told her son that he’s also living her dream. His dad, who’s come around slowly, has seen his son in Kinky Boots twice.

The first time, he expressed that he was “proud of me,” Ghee says. “But the second time, it really landed with him. He could not stop saying to me: ‘You are my son, you are my son,’ and now he runs through the streets saying ‘I’m Lola’s proud father! I’m Lola’s proud father.’ ”

Before he was cast, Ghee, as a fan and fellow performer, couldn’t stop watching back-stage videos of Billy Porter (Broadway’s Tony-winning Lola) getting into makeup and preparing to go onstage.

Ghee’s chance came at a casting call for a different musical. He knew the agency involved also handled Kinky Boots, so he dropped off a headshot and résumé with an impassioned cover letter expressing his interest in Kinky Boots and his deep connection to Lola’s story. He even talked about his father.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The young Brit Charlie (Adam Kaplan) gets into his own shiny pair of Lola-like boots; shoe designs are debated by the factory team; Lauren (Tiffany Engen), an assembly-line worker, suggests Price & Son find an “underserved niche market.”

ENCOREATLANTA.COM14

The audition call came, and several rounds later, Ghee was hired to tour as a swing (covering several ensemble roles) and under-study the outrageous Lola. Eventually, the role became his.

Ghee, 26, says he lives his life much as Simon/Lola does. “Lola has this constant struggle to be true to himself as Simon. He just wants to be accepted for who he is, and he wants the same for others. That’s how I live my life.

“I get to use all of the mess, per se, of my personal life to help raise people up every night. When I sing ‘Hold Me in Your Heart’ and ‘Not My Father’s Son,’ I am pulling on people’s heartstrings, making them think about their own relationships.”

The musical, based on the 2006 movie of the same name, is inspired by real events. It whisks audiences from a struggling English shoe factory to the glamor-ous catwalks of Milan. It follows the story of Charlie Price, whose family owns that factory, and his efforts to make it profitable again.

Lola needs someone to build her fashionable but sturdy new shoes. Charlie and Lola find in each other kindred spirits.

Mikey Piscitelli, Ghee’s dresser and best pal on the tour, is Ghee’s confidant. “He feels my energy and knows when it’s a great day or when it’s an off-day. He’s always there to give me whatever I need, whether it’s a Sour Patch Kid or a tissue.”

Piscitelli has his hands full. Lola has 13 costume changes, including one that must be done in 45 seconds. In a two-minute change, Lola goes from full drag into a man’s four-piece suit, and his girly makeup is covered so he looks like a boy again.

As Ghee talks, Piscitelli is “stoning” (covering Lola’s heels in red crystals and adding beads and rhine-stones to the sides). This is of a new pair of thigh-high boots for Lola’s finale. Piscitelli, incidently, goes by “broadwaystoner” on Instagram.

That’s show biz. Another day, another story, another stop on the road.

TRY IS SUCH A LITTLE WORD. BUT THE REWARDS CAN BE AWFULLY BIG.

We were curious, what is it within us that makes us try? And when we fail,

try again? It’s a limitless desire to be better. For ourselves, our loved ones,

our community. As a proud supporter of Broadway in Atlanta, we applaud that.

Like a “virgin” cocktail when you’re out on the town?If so, order it in hush-hush tones. Madonna’s notoriously tardy performance for a sold-out but

forgiving Atlanta crowd in September was blamed on her obliga-tion to tape endorsements for tequila giant Jose Cuervo before, during and after the show.

But if, like the Material Girl, tequila is your beverage of choice, you have plenty of company.

“The tequila category is booming and will continue to boom,” says Mac Thurston, owner of Mac’s Beer & Wine in Midtown. “It’s really gone upscale. My customers are paying on the same price level for better brands that they’d pay for a fine cognac or a single-malt scotch or small-batch bourbon.

“This isn’t your daddy’s tequila we’re talking about,” Thurston says. “It’s made from pure Mexican agave, and people love the taste. It’s not just for margaritas anymore, it’s becoming the drink of choice straight up.”

Georgia, says Statista market data service, is a Top 10 state in terms of tequila enjoyment, imbibing more than 450,000 9-liter cases per year at last count. Nationwide, says the U.S. Distilled Spirits Council, tequila consumption has steadily risen at a rate of about 5.6 percent every year since 2002, thanks in large part to celebrity endorsements (George Clooney, Justin Timberlake, Sammy Hagar, Sean Combs) and party-scene depictions on television and film.

Metro Atlanta’s trendiest bars and eateries — from JCT Kitchen in West Midtown to Three Sheets in Sandy Springs — have been creating tequila-based food and drink as quickly

as premium distilleries can churn out the beloved nectar of the agave plant.

And Buckhead-based Goza Tequila, which hit the market in February, is poised to make its mark. And self-proclaimed foodies are flooding social media with praise for tequila-infused nibbles.

“Taco Tuesday” isn’t enough anymore; now ”Tequila Tuesday” is a thing. With that in mind we offer a bit of a run-down on the local scene so you can be fully informed as you plan for that popular “national” holiday — Cinco de Mayo.

TRIED AND TRUEThe time-tested Jose Cuervo brand is rebooting, with the help of pop priestess Madonna, who’s been seen biting a lime wedge and licking salted rims on the company’s behalf.

Closer to home, reliable pours pull thirsty fans into such happy hour hot spots as Tin Lizzy’s (several locations), Six Feet Under (Grant Park, West Midtown), Cockpit (southeast Atlanta) and Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong (Atlanta, Athens).

GO LOCALBuckhead’s Goza has been working for a decade to deliver three vintages from Mexican hillsides — the fresh-brewed Blanco,

barrel-sweetened Reposado and oak-spiced Afiejo. They sell at dozens of metro retailers, including Green’s Discount Liquors in Midtown, the Smyrna World of Beverages and Sigman Bottle Shop in Conyers. To date, Goza (pronounced GO-zuh) has 104 distribution points in the Southeast.

“Goza means ‘enjoy’ in Spanish, and is targeted to men and women who want to savor the taste of a product that mixes just as well in any cocktail as vodka does,” says founder Jacob Gluck. “Our tagline is, ‘Mexican Grown. Atlanta’s Own,’ because this is the perfect market. It’s growing and we want play a part in that growth.”

Goza is poured at such bars and bistros as the quirky Yebo and the aristocratic Hal’s Steakhouse (both in Buckhead). The brand even has a recipe program for do-it-yourselfers. It includes the Mayan Mule, with a kick of bitters and lime; the Mint Refresher, brightened with blackberries; and the Go Go, spiked with lemongrass (recipes and more at gozatequila.com).

CACTUS CUISINEIf you’d rather make a meal of your tequila, check out the ceviche at Escorpion (downtown Atlanta), the fried plantains at Mezcalito’s Cocina (Grant Park), the shrimp cocktail at Tacos and Tequilas (Midtown) and the grilled steak tacos at Alma Cocina (downtown).

OH, BUT WAIT ...Tequila does have a reputation for producing hangovers, though — the better the tequila, the lighter the morning-after bite, reportedly — but you’d still be wise to indulge at your own risk when sipping such well-known margarita and tequila libations as the FGR Herradura Double Reposado Cube, a spiked and frozen green apple juice at Alma Cocina (downtown Atlanta); the potent Naranjarita, which comes with a blur of blood-orange juice puree, at the Original El Taco (Virginia-Highland); and the El Paso, with pineapple and cilantro, at 4th & Swift (Old Fourth Ward).

Thirsty? We thought so. Salud!

ETIQUETTE

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins.

3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

Ever since the early days of soul and R&B, Atlanta has held its own as a major recording and performance hub. The Fox Theatre has welcomed legends from both yesterday and today to its grand stage, where they’ve entertained guests under the starry (indoor) sky.

From Bette Midler to the Rolling Stones, from Elvis to Linda Ronstadt, it’s almost impossible to separate the history of the Fox Theatre from the history of popular American music.

In honor of the Fox’s ongoing comittment to booking ‘“super groovy, man” concerts, we relive some of the historic musical moments and iconic talents that have trod the big stage. Did you know?

• In July 1976, the pop-rock act Lynyrd Skynyrd performed on three consecutive nights, recording the album One More From the Road and donating $5,000 to the Save the Fox campaign.

• The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice. In June 1978, the band was first billed as “The Cockroaches” — so as not to reveal its true identity before the official concert announcement was released.

• The Stones next played the Fox to a standing-room-only crowd on Oct. 26, 1981. Band members flew to Savannah for the day but, because of dense fog in Atlanta, the flight back was rerouted to Macon. The concert started about 90 minutes late.

• Bette Midler was booked for three nights in February 1983. According to promoter Alex Cooley, when Midler entered her dressing room she claimed someone had died in that space and a ghost was present. The Divine Miss M refused to perform but relented when she was moved to another dressing room. The show must go on.
