INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Pastor’s Point of View:
In the past few newsletters I have been sharing about the books we are reading in the
Healthy Church Initiative (HCI). Please take a look at the bulletin Board in the
Fellowship Hall about the HCI.
This month I would like to share just 3 of many insights by Carey Nieuwhof ; a
popular blogger and podcaster; and author of bestselling books. These insights are
adapted from his latest book, Lasting Impact: 7 Powerful Conversations That Will Help
Your Church Grow
3 Keys to Rebirth (Paraphrased):
1. An Elevated Sense of Mission
The church has always been about something bigger than itself. At the center of our
mission is Christ. While most organizations naturally drift toward an insider focus,
church leaders must resist this at all costs. Not only is it antithetical to the true mission
of the church, but a self-obsessed community is a turnoff to a young generation that is
well aware of the needs in the world the church often ignores. You lose your narcissism
when you lose yourself in a bigger mission.
2. Elevated Community
The heart of Christianity is relationship — a right relationship with God, each other,
and ourselves. It’s also fairly clear that younger adults and teens hunger for community
perhaps more deeply than previous generations did. Moving forward, churches that
elevate community and prioritize healthy relationships will fare much better in
accomplishing their mission than those who don’t. Worship or programs, without
community won’t accomplish the mission of Christ.
3. Experimentation
Experimentation is the key to innovation. In an age of imitation, innovation has to make
a comeback. So how does a church experiment, particularly a church that has had
success in the recent past or even in the present? The best approach is to do what you
do now, but begin experimenting on the side to see what has the potential to make a
significant impact in the future. Truthfully, I’m not sure anyone really knows what that
is right now, which is why experimentation is even more important than we might
initially think.
So as we embrace spring this April, contemplate faith and put your Easter faith into
action taking into consideration 1. An Elevated Sense of Mission, 2. Elevated
Community, and 3. Experimentation!
If you are well and in town, see you in church!
-Rev. Lee Webb
Treasurers’ Report - February 28, 2016
The church receives contributions in several
different ways. By electronic funds transfers (EFT)
from checking or savings accounts, mail, Sunday
morning offering, and Dwolla. Whichever way you
prefer and the amount is your preference. No matter
how small the contribution it amounts to a lot if eve-
ryone contributes.
The reason why I mention this is because the
church is experiencing more and larger deficits each
year. I wished I had better news but I don't other then
the utilities bill is still favorable heading into spring
and summer.
Thank you for your contributions!

"BREAKING NEWS" A Comedic Lenten and Easter Musical Drama
Sunday, April 3 - 10:00 AM (ONE SERVICE ONLY)
Union Park United Methodist Church
East 12th and Guthrie, DSM
Dear Church,
I have done something that I have dreamed of doing for a long time. I have written a musical drama...and we will be
presenting it on Sunday, April 3 at 10:00 at Union Park United Methodist Church. I must tell you...this is not your
ordinary church drama. Do I ever do anything ordinary? It is a..."Comedic Lenten and Easter Drama" called
"BREAKING NEWS." NO...it is not presented on Easter. You are all busy on Easter, so we decided to show the
premier presentation the Sunday following.
I must warn you...if you are sensitive to how the Easter Drama is told...this might not be for you. It is full of
slap-stick, Saturday Night Live, Monty Python humor which will make you roll your eyes and laugh. On the other
hand...there are some very precious, sensitive and traditional moments that just might make you cry. We are making
the scriptures come to life. Much of the music is familiar (I didn't write the music...just picked and arranged.) There
is a bit of contemporary music that I am sure you will enjoy. We have pulled out all the stops...our band will be play-
ing. You will hear the organ and grand piano. Our choir has had so much fun putting this together. Costumes for all.
I will say this...I am so excited about this that I am going to send it off to see if it can be published. Anyone have any
ideas or contacts in the publishing world?
Anyway...I hope you can come. You are welcome to bring friends. A traditional Easter dinner follows in our
fellowship hall and you are invited to dinner.
Thank you Loretta Downs for organizing the dinner. Thanks to the rest of you who have "pitched in" to help out! We
will have lots of visitors that day. I know that you will put on your welcome hat and reach out to those you do not
know. Remember...GOD LOVES YOU!
Peace and Grace, Jennifer Shide
