contents The clocks have gone forward, the nights are getting lighter, the sun has been shining and the flowers are in bloom.

A new, more optimistic season of the year is finally here and what better way to celebrate than showing off your finest flowers and flans down the Village hall this month for the annual Spring Show.

The entry form is on pages 16-17, so have a gander at the entry details, as you never know, you may have grown something you are really proud of and it may be better than anybody else’s in the village.

It’s also a time to gorge on chocolate (without feeling guilty) with easter a couple of weeks away, while plans are made for those eagerly-awaited egg hunts in the back garden.

There’s details of a new defibrillator in the village, with training provided for those who wish to use it (page 13), while we have a report on Lincoln’s trip to Arsenal (page 14), and news of a new sporting club who have put out a rallying call for aspiring members (page 26). Pitter Patter. dom

taking a walkin the country

with Mike halliday01522 754686

march WaLKn Eight walkers set off from Nocton village hall for a seven-and-a-half mile walk in the surrounding countryside and woodland.

The sun shone brightly throughout the walk enabling long views across the fenlands.

We spent some time at the ruins of Nocton Hall, where one of our members provided a historical account of the hall, particularly its use as a hospital since the First World War until it was vacated in the 1990s.

The main drive to the hall is lined with magnificent Wellingtonia trees that can

live for up to a thousand years. The bark is reddish-brown, soft and spongy.

aPrIL WaLKn A new walk for the group starting from Ingham village hall and passing through Glentworth and Fillingham villages.

The terrain is good and fairly flat. The distance is a good eight miles.

Walkers should meet at the Village Hall at 9.30am and are advised to take a waterproof coat, bring a drink and a snack, and wear suitable footwear.

Everyone is welcome to join in the walk.

speaker evening on propagationn The first meeting in the Gardening Club year was well supported by members and guests. Our speaker was Paul Maxey, our local Horticulturlist from Scothern Nurseries.

Paul gave a most interesting talk and demonstrations on propagation techniques which all amateurs can attempt, including the following:

a seed sowinga hard and softwood cuttingsa leaf bud and grafting techniquesa layering/Irish cuttingsa root cuttingsa divisiona bulbs and corms

Paul also outlined details of the modern micropropagation method, which is now used by major commercial plant suppliers in order to quickly produce large quantities of plants at competitive prices.

The interest in his talk was reflected in the number of questions which came from the audience.

After the interval, Paul judged the 12 entries in our Flower of the Month competition, which was won by Coral Evans’ Hellebore. In second was Sheila Cannon’s Camelia and Mike Cannon’s Tulip was awarded third place.

The Horticultural Challenge from last October’s meeting produced 13 pots of Jetfire daffodils – all at various stages of development, from early leaf to post- flowering.

This resulted in much discussion about different planting dates and methods of culture. The second Horticultural Challenge is to produce a Dahlia flower for the October meeting from the two seeds given to everyone at the meeting.

village spring shown Monday, 10 April – Arrangements are well in hand for the organisation of the Village Spring Show and entries are welcome from all Sudbrooke residents and Gardening Club members – the Rules and Entry Schedule are printed on pages 16-17.

Once again there are three trophies to be awarded, in addition to the usual gift vouchers and place cards. So please do try and support this village event by entering your flowers, cookery and handicraft items.

The Junior Section is freely open to all village children aged 14 years and under. Therefore, if they are looking for something to do during the Easter school holidays, why not encourage them to prepare items for entry in any of the junior sections – the judges will take age into account when reaching their decisions.

All entries to be brought to the Village Hall between 6-7pm. Only adult exhibitors are asked to pay 20p per entry to help defray the cost of running the Show.

Whilst judging is taking place, refreshments and raffle tickets will be on sale.

From 7.45pm the show is freely open to everyone for viewing, and a warm welcome is extended to you all.

Sudbrooke village hanging baSket competition 2017

There was such a good display of hanging baskets throughout the village last year that we have decided to run the same competition this year.

We expect to judge hanging baskets in July and some of the aspects the judges will be looking for include the use of colour, plant health, structure of planting and visual impact.

More details to follow next month, but once the danger of frost has passed, you can start planting out your baskets.

April 2017 http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Sudbrooke/ 13

n West Lindsey District Council has been working in partnership with Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Services (LIVES) to deliver a scheme for the supply of defibrillators to parishes.

Sudbrooke has been fortunate in obtaining one of these defibrillators for the parish and with permission of Christine at Kokoo Hair Salon and G S Hughes, owner of the building, it is now sited on the exterior wall of the hair salon (near to the framed plan of the village).

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are portable devices that can be used on someone having a cardiac arrest. They check the heart rhythm and send an electric shock to the heart to try and restore a normal rhythm. They have been in wide use for many years and form part of the standard equipment that paramedics, ambulances and first responders carry.

In the event of someone suffering a cardiac arrest, the time it takes to administer aid is critical, having access to a nearby defibrilla-tor can greatly reduce the amount of

time it takes to administer lifesaving support. They give the best possible chance for someone to survive until medical services arrive.

Should an emergency arise when it is considered that a defibrillator should be used, the emergency services would issue the code of the defibrillator to the caller in order for it to be used. It is simple to use and if it is not required on the patient it will not work. Training is not necessary to use it. However, it is acknowledged that any of us involved in such a situation may feel more confident using the machine if we

knew in advance how it worked and what it does.

LIVES is therefore offering a training session to give instruction on the use of the defibrillator. Sudbrookes training session is to be held on MONDAY 24 APRIL 2017, AT 7pm, IN THE VILLAGE

HALL.Numbers are limited and must therefore be booked in advance.

Any resident wanting to attend the session please email the

Clerk to the Parish Council on [email protected] as soon as

possible to book a place.

the day the imps faced arsenal

n Several Sudbrooke residents were in attendance at the Emirates Stadium last month to witness Lincoln City’s historic FA Cup quarter-final clash with Arsenal.

The Imps had become the first non-league club in over 100 years to reach that stage of the competition, following a gargantuan run of epic proportions, but the possibility of the greatest Cup upset of all time was all but ended before a ball had even been kicked.

Under-pressure Gunners boss Arsene Wenger opted to name virtually his strongest starting XI possible, with stellar names such as Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny all

included from the off, with World Cup winner Mesut Ozil introduced after 20 minutes, and despite City holding out for 44 gallant minutes, the quality of Arsenal eventually shone like a beacon as they rang rings around Lincoln in a one-sided second-half.

But the 9,000-strong City faithful sang their hearts out for the entire 90 minutes – completely drowning out anything the 51,000 home fans could muster – and to see the away end, at a ground as superb as the Emirates, packed to the rafters with Imps supporters was a moment most of us will never forget.

The dream may have come to an end, but the memories of that match will last forever.

thy kingdom comen I guess that a lot of us know the words to the Lord’s Prayer. It’s called the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ because it is the prayer that Jesus taught His followers to pray when they asked Him ‘how’ to pray.

Many of us learned it at school and it is prayed by over two billion Christians all over the world – that often makes me think that when I am not praying it, someone else is, which means that the voice of someone praying echoes around the world 24 hours per day.

Last year during the period between our celebration of the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost, we spent nine days praying in a more concerted way as we walked through, to and around our villages and in our churches.

It was a national initiative encouraged by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Personally, for me it was a really moving experience as I walked with friends, having experienced the death of my mother a day before we started.

Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better way to honour her. This year though the initiative is

expanding – the call to prayer is global and ecumenical in an initiative called ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. In light of that we will be walking and praying from Church to Church in our Deanery – from Glentham to Burton and from Greetwell to Scampton…..

But why pray, and why pray ‘thy Kingdom Come?’

Christians believe in the power of prayer to transform lives. Many of us know that others have prayed for us and that it has changed our lives. Many of us have experienced the stillness and strength that can come from listening to God and being in His presence.

So, we are praying that others may come to know that same transforming presence of Jesus Christ in their lives; and in praying for God’s Kingdom to come we are praying that the love of Jesus will flow through and flood our communities.

If you are a praying person, come and join in, enjoy company on the roads we travel and experience Jesus in a new way.

If you would like us to pray for you, then during May there will be prayer boxes in our churches where you can slip a request into the box.

COME AND JOIN US!SUDbROOkE VIllAgE HAll – “A HAppy MEDIUM”

On Saturday 4 March, the Village Hall Committee organised and hosted and “An Evening With Ann Anderson, Medium and Spiritualist”.

Having not hosted an event like this before we entered into it with a little bit of trepidation. Would people attend and if so how many? Providing a “pie and peas supper”, how many should we cater for? etc, etc.

We did not need to worry. We had a great attendance and the hall was packed with 106 people who really enjoyed the evening – people had travelled from Retford and Market Rasen, while many locals were also in attendance.

Ann provided a very thought provoking and interesting insight to the Spirit World. Many people were not sure what to expect and how the evening would pan out. Some of the comments she made were eerily accurate to certain members of the audience and some were reduced to tears (in a nice way).

Whether you are a believer or not, you could not fail to be impressed with this evening of spellbinding entertainment.

The evening could not go ahead without the army of volunteers who give up their time and put a lot of effort into providing a fun evening for all. I would especially like to thank Christine at Kokoo, our village hairdressers for helping to sell some of the tickets.

Many newcomers to the Village Hall were very impressed with the facilities, and as a committee we want to provide more great evenings for local residents. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see, please get in touch.

What is middle age? Men being born today are expected to live until 79 and women till 83. So if we equalise the number, then middle age settles down at around 40 years old.

At this point, we may consciously or sub-consciously start to review our lives (or not) (ie) a time to look back and a time to look forward, a time to stand still or a time to move on. It is a time to evaluate the past and present and decide if we wish to change ourselves and our Life Plan. However, to do this we have to ask some key questions about ourselves:LIFE REVIEW l What roles have I been playing in life?l Have I fulfilled my hopes and dreams? l What can I become? l Do I want to change?l Am I a giver or receiver?l Am I a reactive or a proactive person?l Am I a team player or a loner?l Do I have a good circle of friends?l Do I have a good social life?l Am I financially solvent?l Do I have any regrets?l Am I thriving or merely surviving?l Am I healthy? l Have I any unfinished business?l Have I successfully achieved my goals? (career, home-maker, child carer)l Am I suffering from the ‘empty nest syndrome? (kids have left home)l Am I happy (whatever that means to the individual)l Have I dealt successfully with all the losses in my life?l Have I dealt successfully with negatives in my life so far?l Am I satisfied with my life?l Am I making the most of my talents?l Have I yet reached my full potential?

Of course, the answers to the above questions will reveal whether or not you have kept to your current Life Plan. If your Life Plan is ‘on course’ when you reach middle age, then there may be no need for a Life Review’ (ie) keep the ‘status quo)’. However, if it is not ‘on course’ or you are unhappy with it, then you will need to create a new Life Plan which will contain the following actions:NEW LIFE PLANl Enlist support of friends and family (especially if moving home)l Change activities – develop new interests (Education courses, hobbies, travel)l Identify new goalsl Make new friendships (singly or together)l Start a new careerl Re-negotiate domestic roles l Ensure that you have sufficient motivation for changel Ensure you have sufficient financial resources to support the above new Life Plan

SUMMARY: Do you want to settle for a life of standing still and possible regrets or do you want to grasp the opportunities that mid-life can bring, along with new levels of satisfaction and fulfilment? If you opt for ‘change’ then this is the process to follow:Checklist for change (the 7 ‘R’s)l Review your current lifel Re-plan – identify what your new life will be like without the ‘old clutter’l Re-negotiate domestic roles if partneredl Re-inforce your choices by consulting with others l Re-enter your new circlel Rejoice at your new lifel Return of old self

readers’ lettersYour correspondence

Dear Editor,My son was driving the other week when his mobile phone, which he had placed in the glove compartment, rang.

He pulled into a roadside layby before removing it and then put it to his ear. A police car drove past and then turned around and came back.

The police officer informed my son that he was in fact breaking the law and could be liable to a large fine and points on his licence because, although the car was stationary, the engine was still running and the keys were still in the ignition.

It is exactly the same critique as is used for being drunk in charge of a vehicle. Luckily my son only received a verbal warning in this case, but he could have been reported. If you read this take note and warn others.

REMEMBER TO SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE AND REMOVE THE KEYS FROM THE IGNITION IF YOU USE A PHONE WHILE SEATED IN THE DRIVING SEAT OF A VEHICLE ON THE ROAD.

Please warn friends and family.Name supplied to editor

Dear Editor,I noticed the other day that some kind, thoughtful person had nailed up a bird’s nesting box on a tree in Holme Drive at the green public space beside the road. What a super idea!

How about other folks taking up this idea? It would be a wonderful thing to do and would begreat to see how it would encourage nesting birds to the village where we could watch themand point them out to our small children.

Come on bird lovers. It won’t cost much. They will last in situe for years and if enough people took up the idea would give more character to the village. Let’s see how many we can put up on the village trees.

Dear Editor,I read Mike Anston’s letter in last month’s edition about the village shop – maybe he has come up with the answer to the problem of finding new ownership, which is sorely missed by lots of elderly villagers like me.

He mentions a Co-Op ownership of the business... well, why not a villagers’ co-operative ? It has been done elsewhere.

I am sure that it would be possible for someone to come up with an idea of how to form a collection of villagers to create a group and finance a takeover of the shop and bring our shop back to life. After all, that is how the Co-Operative Society we all know and love, that is famous throughout the county was formed and it has been done in several other village shops and even public houses around the UK. Give it a thought folks.

Dear Editor,On the subject of Mike Anston’s letter regarding the village shop, I have heard the owner is allegedly demanding too much money for the leasehold, a situation that has put off a few potential takers.

If that is the case, then we can say goodbye to the idea of the shop being resurrected in the near future, which would be a crying shame for the residents of Sudbrooke.

Also, questions need to be asked, if this is truly the case, why indeed the owner is demanding too high a financial return as he obviously has no interest in running a business in our village, and what’s the point of hanging on to something like that if you have no interest in it?

Surely some sort of financial return for the owner is better than nothing at all, or is greed playing more than a leading role here?

poetry boxWe have had a few contributions sent in this month. Keep them coming...

A way was cut through twisted rootsA path beyond the hill

A door was opened to the truthAnd raging storms stood still.

A vine was raised on thirsty soilA branch from Heaven thrived

A broken world was healed with loveThe promised light arrived

Wide outstretched arms bade all to comeThe weary knew sweet rest

While daily bread filled hungry souls The meek and poor were blessed.

The shepherd saved his straying sheepThe prodigals returned

A cross of shame brought glorious hopeThen even death was turned.

And with the prophecies fulfilledThe chains of sin unwound

With grace and mercy flowing freeAnd restoration found:

A song of praise filled Earth and HeavenThe darkness rolled away

A shout of triumph rose with joyTo herald Easter Day.

Where did it go to That wonderment and

surprise,At each new experience

That lit up our eyes,Like snowflakes and kittens

And butterfly wings.

Why of course it’s still there,Somewhere deep within,

We can reach out and touch it

And go back again.

Our heart took a pictureJust for our keeping

It wasn’t meant to be Forgotten or fleeting.

For life is so simple,If we could but see,

The beauty that’s within usWithin you and me.

As love that is givenWill surely return.

Friday 28 April, 7.30pmI, Daniel Blake (2016) Ken Loach directs this drama that follows a 59-year-old joiner as he tries to navigate the British benefits system.

In the North-East of England, widower Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) is forced to stop working when he is taken ill with heart disease and so applies for Employment and Support Allowance from the Government.

But his life is further thrown into disarray when his benefits are suddenly taken away from him and he is forced to jump through the many hoops of the bureaucratic system to get them back.

During this time, he meets the similarly- troubled single mother Katie (Hayley Squires). The film was nominated for five BAFTAs including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

As usual tickets cost £3, with £1 from every ticket donated to the village hall committee or parish council for use within the venue or local community. Blueprint: Film Foundation are a non-profit organisation and all other box-office proceeds will be put towards running the project. Food and drinks will also be available at each screening, with all proceeds going to the local village hall committee. Doors open at 7pm.

This project is currently funded in part by Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Awards for All’ initiative to improve communities as well as by the British Film Institute’s ‘Neighbourhood Cinema’ initiative and ‘Film Audience Network’ (through

Film Hub Central East) to bring specialised film programming into areas with limited access to a cinema. The funding allows Blueprint: Film Foundation to provide screenings to village halls at no cost to the committee.

water good idea that is!Two villagers are attempting to form a Sudbrooke Over-50s Water Polo Club and are on the lookout for potential new recruits.

Water polo is one of the fastest-growing sports amongst the elder population in the UK, with the over-50s version likened to ‘walking football’, as the game is played in a five-foot deep swimming pool, where participants have to wade through the water, but can use the breaststroke in certain areas of the ‘pitch’.

Local residents Alfi Ploor and Joe Kaits drummed up the idea of the club one night during their weekly swim at Yarborough Leisure Centre, but need likewise individuals to join them if the inaugural Sudbrooke Sharks are to get off the ground.

“We love to swim and both played a bit of water polo in our younger days at university,” explained 57-year-old Joe.

“We are, though, getting on a bit now, but we still like to be competitive and hit on the idea of forming this club in order to compete in the regional over-50s league, against the likes of

Bridlington Barracudas, Doncaster Dolphins, Pontefract Penguins and Newark Newts.

“We toyed with walking football, I must admit, but loads of oldies are doing that now and we wanted to be a bit different, so we thought why not a water-based sport.

“It will keep us fit at the same time as keeping our competitive edges reasonably sharp, but we need a few more to join us in order for the club to get off the ground.”

Alfi, 63, chipped in: “You don’t even need to have to swim as the water’s only a few feet deep – buoyancy aids will be supplied for those in fear of drowning.

“Matches are six-a-aside, so we need at least another four to join us, which shouldn’t be a problem given Sudbrooke’s ageing population, plus what else is there to do for us old ones around here?

“Forget jogging and cycling, they’re old hat and boring, water polo’s where it’s at.”

the grand nationalWith dominic Picksley

the greatest show on earthn Again, I can’t let April go by without a mention of sport’s greatest annual event, the Randox Health Grand National at Aintree.

In my ‘five to follow’ last year, we had one placed, so let’s see if we can do marginally better this time around...

VieUX lion roUgeIn tremendous form, having followed up his Becher Chase win (over the National fences), with a comfortable success in the Grand National Trial at Haydock, where he beat last year’s RSA Chase hero Blaklion by three lengths. Ran a terrific race to finish seventh in last year’s National at massive odds 66-1 and primed for another big run this time around at a much shorter price, and may well go off as favourite. Loves a stamina test and loves these fences. Best price 10-1

the last samUriWas well fancied when second last year and in the right sort of form to mount another serious challenge. Finished third in the Becher Chase and second to Definitly Red in Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Chase last month, to suggest he could be arriving at Aintree in peak condition. Has taken to these fences, and relishes a stamina test. Best price 16-1

CaUse oF CaUsesThree times a Cheltenham Festival winner and eighth in his one and only attempt at the National in 2015. Bounced right back to form in the Glenfarclas Chase at Prestbury Park, winning the cross country contest in some style, staying on strongly at the end of the four-mile contest. If he can replicate his Cheltenham form at Aintree then he will have a big chance, especially if amateur jockey Jamie Codd is on board. Best price 16-1

highland lodgeWon the Becher Chase in 2015 and second to Vieu Lion Rouge 12 months later, but sandwiched between those efforts was a disappointing outing in the Scottish Grand National, when he was pulled up by Henry Brooke. Was also eighth in the Becher in 2014, so in three attempts over the National fences has never failed to get round. Will be nice and fresh too, whereas many others have the rigours of Cheltenham to overcome. Best price 40-1

raz de mareeThe last 12-year-old to win the National was Amberleigh House in 2004 (Royal Athlete prior to that in 1995), but Gavin Cromwell’s veteran is a leading contender judged by his second-placed finish behind Native River in the Welsh National, in December. Failed to get round on his only attempt in the big one in 2014, but was second

in the Midlands National a year later and also won the Cork National in 2012, so has the pedigree to do well. Best price 50-1

CARE QUALITY COMMISSIONn The CQC carry out regular checks on health and social care services, including GP Surgeries, to ensure we are providing care that is safe, caring, effective, responsive to people’s needs and well-led.

The CQC monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of safety and care and publish what they find, including performance ratings.

Our inspection took place on September 12, 2016 and we are delighted to say that this week we have received a ‘Good’ rating across the board in all areas inspected.

The final report is available for all to view at www.cqc.org.uk/directory/1-569418242.

There will also be a copy available in the waiting room and on our website.

DNA’S (DID NOT ATTENDS)n In January, a total of 16 hours of clinical time was lost due to patients not attending for their appointments. This equates to 101 appointments in total! Please try to remember appointments

or cancel with us if they are no longer required. If you would like to be able to receive booking confirmations and text message reminders for appointments, please see reception to sign up to this facility.

NURSES SURVEYn We are asking patients that attend the surgery for a Nurses’ appointment to help us by completing a survey on the care they receive.

This feedback is important to the Nurses to allow them to reflect on their work and ensure high standards of care.

Please help us by completing a survey next time you attend.

EASTER OPENING HOURSn Please remember that the surgery will be closed for Easter weekend in April. The surgery will close at 9.30pm on Thursday 13 April and re-open again at 8am on Tuesday 18 April.

If anyone reading this could offer a few hours a month and would like an informal chat as to what is involved, please give me a call or leave your details at the Health Centre reception and they will pass them on to me.

The time you can offer can be really flexible and as much or as little as you like. It can fit in around part time work, school times and childcare so please give this your consideration as the transport system relies on volunteers.

Drivers can claim an amount towards their petrol and they use their own vehicles.

latest updaten With the onslaught of better weather, the members of the Camera Club are getting out and about with their cameras and hopefully getting some great images for the rest of the years competitions.

At the club we have changed things a little this year – we now have six Photographer of the Year (POTY) competitions; three of them are print competitions and three are just digitally projected competitions. This gives members an opportunity to decide if they want to enter all competitions or just the Print or Digital.

I must admit the images that are being presented for competitions are getting better each year and giving our judges something to ponder over. If you would like to see the work of the Camera Club members come along one night and take a look for yourself.

apRIl eventsn Right, into April and another packed month for us. Firstly we will be having a digital competition against Louth Camera Club at their club venue in Louth.

Hopefully this should be a great evening as both clubs have presented some great work in the past. Our second meeting on the 16th will be a practical evening at The Old School,

where members will be improving their skills on an evening of “Showing Movement”.

This will entail taking pictures of moving objects and making the background show movement whilst the main point of the subject is kept sharp.

The final meeting for the month will be on the 27th, when we will have a speaker to entertain us. Tesni Ward will be talking to us on “Wildlife” (Note for members, please bring in your print entries for the next competition on this night).

Tesni’s talk is open to anyone so if you would like a night out then pop along and you can join in with us on the night, £2 entry includes refreshments on the night.

Well that’s it for another month, but if you are interested in the Camera Club please check out our updated website and get in touch, there are some great images on there from the members and should you take a shine to one of the images you can now buy them through our website or get in touch with me direct.
