April 2017

G ood day members, we now have a new Committee for the

2017/8 year, A new President, Sec-retary of Registers a General Com-mittee appointment and an Auditor. I would like to thank everyone for their 2016 input to this magazine and apologise for any errors that have occurred, obviously didn’t up-set too many as no one stood for the editor role. Just to advise you that the May is-sue could be delayed due to the Na-tional Meeting, it is my intention to include as much copy about the event as possible as I think we may have reached National Meeting overload by then, so a warning to contributors !! With the Advertiser’s Thursdays Club Notes withdrawn continue to rely on our Website to confirm or amend events that have been advertised in this magazine.

C ontrary to my March report this is definitely the last one. We have a

new chairman in Adrian Ward who will guide the club for the next couple of years and we are losing the services of committee person Dick Manning who has taken up the position of Dep-uty Clerk of Course for the newly named Adelaide Rally to be held in conjunction with the Festival of Speed this year, and Wayne Hough past President and Register Secretary is also having a break this year. I am sure that all members wish them both well.

There was a great turnout of mem-bers at the Annual General Meeting (94) in March for the presentation of annual reports, club awards and the election of officers for the coming year. All committee positions and committee appointments have been filled with the exception of Social Sec-retary position. I wish them well for the challengers that lie ahead.

There was a slight problem with my last report in that the last couple of paragraphs along with some photo’s went missing (the editor has included the missing bits in this edition) I think we will blame a computer glitch for this slight hiccup.

I have one item of breaking news to report, club member Kevin Weeks has been accepted to compete in this years Pikes Peak Hill Climb. If you are not familiar with this event here is a bit of info.

It is the second oldest motor sports event in the U.S.A. first run in 1916 so

this year is the 100th

anniversary and 94th

running of the event. The course is 12.42 miles (19.988km) long with 156 turns. Starts at 9,390 ft. (2834m) finishes at 14,115 ft. (4302.24m). The thin air at the summit robs the engines of approx. 30% of their power and driv-ers suffer similar a loss of reflex and muscle power. The current record is held by Se-bastien Loeb driving a Peugeot 208 T16 with a time of 8m 13.878s set in 2013.

This event is recognised as the most challenging hill climb in the world and attracts race teams willing to spend many thousands of dollars and many months preparing to try and become the King of the Mountain. 97 entries have been accepted this year, 64 cars and 33 motorcycles. Of these there are 4 Australian entries, David Rowe - 1985 Audi Quatro, Tony Quinn - 2015 Ford Focus, Kevin Weeks - 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and Rennie Scaysbrook riding a 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke R.

The race will be held on Sunday June the 25

th, and my understanding is that

on the preceding Tuesday practice starts at 3.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. on the top 1/3

rd. section, and the same start

and finish times on the Wednesday and Thursday for the middle and bot-tom sections. Friday is qualifying and Sunday the big day with all competi-tors having just one run up the full

course. Competitors are required to be at the course at 2.00 a.m. on race day.

As I am sure you can imagine things will be pretty hectic in the next few months at Supaloc Racing preparing for this event along with the Hot Laps at the National Meeting and the Mt. Alma Hill Climb in early April. On behalf of the M.G.C.C. of S.A. I wish Kevin and his team all the best for this challenging event.

MISSING PART OF LAST MONTHS PRESIDENTS REPORT

The last paragraph of the March re-port was a story about an MGA run-ning a 428 Cobra Super Jet V8 en-gined project and here are the miss-ing photos.

The report continued.......... My brother and club member John has finished the restoration of his Red MGB and those members who have seen it I think would agree he has done a great job for a retired school teacher, pity it is overshadowed by a fantastic Twin Cam in the back-ground.

As a matter of interest a pretty rea-sonable Twin Cam sold at Shannon’s

Sydney Auction in early February for $85,000. A 1950 MGTD went for $25,000 but a number plate NSW243 went for $142,000 Please Explain. Cheers and all the best for the club in 2017 Allan.

Notable among these were, All British Day, with a display of 64 MGs, the annual Climb to The Eagle Run. the Goodwood Revival, the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic day, the Bay to Birdwood Rally ,the British Classics Tour at Victor Harbor and the Ade-laide Motorsport Festival in April .

In October 4 of our members took part in the Vintage Collingrove Weekend, which consists of social activities, a tour through the Barossa Valley on Saturday, and a hill climb on Sunday, topped off with a farewell dinner Sun-day night. This popular event attracts entrants from interstate..

In conclusion I remind you that clubs like the MG Car club, rely almost solely on unpaid volunteers, who give their time for the benefit of all mem-bers. Without volunteers we could not operate or provide the level of service and compliance with the statutory re-quirements that are necessary for the execution of the day to day duties in-volved in successfully running our club. We should be thankful that in the past 12 months we have been fortu-nate in having a team of volunteers to do just this. On behalf of all club members I sincerely thank all of these people, regardless of the level of their contribution during the year.

MGB REGISTER EVENT From..Steve Spong

Saturday 18th February 2017 Beach Run

T he plan was for a balmy sum-mers evening drive along the

coast from Brighton to Largs Pier, however our weird summer weather had different ideas. It did not rain but it was overcast and chilly. However for the select few who made the run it was a great evening.

We welcomed back Roger Ford who has been off convalescing after a nasty ladder fall, and admired his re-cently re-sprayed Camino Gold "B". It was also great to meet the newcom-ers to the club out for their first event, namely Daniel Cooper & Cheryl An-drews-Cooper and David & June Hill in their lovely "Bs".

We managed to keep, more or less, in convoy for the whole of the route but the actions of some drivers do make

you wonder, and what is it about roundabouts that people do not un-derstand? At the Anzac Highway roundabout in Glenelg, we were all continuing straight ahead when a lady cut in from the left, across the bows of Leigh and Judy, and shot off to make a right hand exit. All with unrestrained kids flying about in the back. Luckily Leigh managed to take the necessary evasive action but it was a close thing.

Anyway the rest of the drive was un-eventful and we arrived at Largs where some had to return home, only coming for the drive, whilst 6 of us headed for the pub for a meal and a very congenial night. So thanks to all who came and we look forward to seeing everyone and more at the next B Register Event, yet to be advertised.

MGB REGISTER EVENT From..Steve Spong

T he MGB Register is holding an event on Sunday 18th June 2017

in conjunction with the Strathalbyn Heritage Centre. Jeanette Walsingham-Meath, an MGCCSA Member and a volunteer at the museum, has arranged for 20 MGs, of all types, to be displayed at the front of the museum. Later arrivals can find plenty of park-ing local to the museum. It will be a make your own way affair to arrive between 09.30 and 10.30 am.

3 club volunteers will be required as parking marshals at the museum. Please refer to the attached flyer for more details and for what is on offer on the day.

The Strathalbyn and District Heritage Centre

1 Rankine Street Strathalbyn SA 5255

08) 85362 656

The Strathalbyn and District Heritage Centre is in the former police station (built 1858) and courthouse (added in 1867). Features include several rooms set out in the style of the Victo-rian era, a room reflecting changes in health care over the years, and a courtyard with very high stone walls. From the courtyard, one can access the three jail cells. Displays in the re-cently refurbished courtroom focus upon the lives of the original inhabi-tants and upon the settlers who first came to the district. The Scottish influence is emphasised. In the yard is an extensive collection of farm machinery from the past, in-cluding an excellent example of a fur-phy, a blacksmith's shop, horse drawn

vehicles and exhibits centering on the history of the local Emergency Ser-vices. Notable exhibits include an original horse works and the world-beating high technology solar cycle, the Solar Flare. The Centre also holds a large collection of books, photo-graphs and newspaper accounts of people and past events in Strathal-byn.

MG Car Club of South Australia

PRE-WAR & T REGISTER From...John Bray

2 March 2016 Brian & Kath Golding's Murray Bridge

The MG Palooza at the River.

The Crafers Hotel carpark, given a jolt by the assembled members eager to get on with the run to Goldy's, Murray Bridge . Patrons arriving for dinner were somewhat put out however the hot night ensured that beers flowed freely out to drivers and passengers alike, phew!

Bad luck descended upon A Register member Geoff Goode in his A with starter motor breakdown in the car-park, an unfortunate scratching to the event.

This was the end of the hot night, it got progressively colder on the way to the Gold's ranch .

Thanks to Brian and Kath for hosting members of both registers, 42 signed in but there were at least 6-7 more , 16 T Types,1 YA, 1 WA, & 1 MGA man-aged to negotiate the limestone gravel into Goldy’s yard. Brian’s vintage Vin-

cent motorcycle and sidecar was a highlight in the shed. Amazing story that it was assembled from parts all around the globe, single cylinder en-gine, would you believe that some poor beggar in Brazil is still searching for that single cylinder numbered pot eh Brian?

Apologies. Ken Fisher, Peter Cundy, John Neilson, TD Mc Nabb, Maurice Linehan, Peter Auld, Bob & Shelly Bazzica, Geoff Glasson (late break-down held up ) & Reginald O'Malley

Visitors. From the UK we welcomed Gordon & Gaynor guests of Inspector Buckles . Gordon had the sheer de-light of steering the wandering TC from Crafers to the meeting under supervision of course. Gaynor was escorted in the V8 B driven by Lachy Kinnear, yes great to see both of Buckles cars on the run. Great friends indeed , some stories about Bucks exploits were aired, now we know where the famous steering wheel came from.

April 2017 General Business. An-thony Pearson asked for sup-port at the Na-tional Meeting C o n c o u r s e event on the easter sunday at Colley Re-serve, messers Martin, Davies, Walker & Bray said yes , how-ever it was noted that the very first to register his intent some time ago, An-drew "Willow" Willington had been left off the list, "not happy Jan " , but he's ok now we think.

Geraldine reported that there are 323 registered for the Nat Meet to date. Newly crowned and accredited CAMS media photographers Terry Wright and Wayne Hough did quite a bit of back slapping over their acceptance into the world of the paparazzi. Watch for the hi vis vest of Terry Wright stalking about at next meeting, you will not miss him it's a size XXL , bal-loon fitting i am told.

A big welcome to the A Register members, Greg Atkins was the lone A Series car to make it, Geoff Goode could not make it past Crafers unfor-tunately but it was good to see all the others there. Matters of insignificance. Thane Martin has taken to wearing the Por-sche cap to meetings, let's all ac-knowledge it now that he has pur-chased a very nice 911. Don Walker could hardly wait to get his hands on a set of 19" wheels from Goldy, not sure where they are going , on the special maybe ?

Good to see the boys bring the WA up from Goolwa again, adds class, first to arrive , thanks Peter & Don, it's al-ways a great sight to see register cars of a similar vintage when we can get them together. TD Mc Nabb was in New Zealand on the MG Palooza over there, there is heaps from him going up on the web-site you can be sure.

Russell Garth made an impressive run in the TF without problem this year, the 30 year old resto is holding up well Russ, fingers crossed.

Bob Schapel's paint job on the TC has a rather nice patina about it if you had not noticed, love it !

The Doc was able to dump radiator coolant on the gravel this meeting unnoticed i say.

Technology foiled by a TC. In case you did not notice, the barking dog horn on Ronnie Jillet's TC does not work when the car is in motion. That goes to show that no thorough bred car is going to put up with frivolity and a departure from originality. Maybe Goldy can fix it Ronnie?

Finally we were promised last year by Goldy that this year's event would feature a "golden" sunset at Murray Bridge in day-light saving time, not only cold after Crafers , but no sunset at all, looks like he slipped up on that, however next year might be better, still it was a good night after all. Next meeting 13 April at C l u b r o o m s C h i e f St Brompton

We will be holding the meeting at the club to welcome and en-tertain as well as showing off well prepared cars to interstate guests arriving for the National Meeting. It's Easter Thursday , hot cross buns time & big raffle.

Geraldine and others are going to pre-pare another outstanding supper so make sure that you all roll in for this night with shiny cars, still check the website for more information.

May meeting venue not decided but i will get onto it. Good luck everybody, see you at the April meeting and at the Nat Meet Concourse Easter Sat-urday.

MG Car Club of South Australia

MGC NEWS MGC conversations by Richard Mixture, April 2017

A Supercharged Story

H ello again, it’s Richard here with supercharged story. You might

remember last month’s story about the ‘MGCs Down Under’ book that that nice young Register Co-ordinator is writing describing MGC in New Zealand and Australia. Well he passed on a note to me about this young fella, John Caffin, whose been racing MGs since the late 1950s when he started racing a MG TD that was supercharged. John, found it easy to maintain and very reliable. So, what better thing to do but supercharge an MGC.

John has been involved in historic racing for most of his life and has raced many different cars including a Ferrari, a Lotus Elite and a Cooper Climax with a 2 litre, twin cam engine. He decided to return to supercharging a car and chose a car with a roof but found he had a bit of a barrier with his Director General of Indoor Duties. Here’s what the note said;

“I had purchased a GEN3 M90 Eaton supercharger on E Bay and at the time I was negotiating to buy a Por-sche 912 with the intention of super-charging it. This was the 4 cyl model based on the VW. In the early 1970’s two of these had been supercharged here in Melbourne and they were very successful according to the Porsche Distributor who had told me about them. The only problem I had was my wife did not want a Porsche with a roof on it, see wanted another MG. There just happened to be rust free

automatic C Type Roadster for sale here so that’s just what we pur-chased.

The C Type didn’t require much ex-amination to see that there would be no problem accommodating the M90. There were two bolt holes in the bottom left hand side of the block to locate the belt adjuster pulley and to support the front of the super-charger. The harmonic balancer also had 4 tapped holes where the air pump pulley was mounted (for North American MGCs), so there was no problem with the crankshaft Pulley.

I fabricated the manifold out of 1.6mm steel tubing clamped to a large piece of C section steel to avoid distortion. I bored the holes in the C section using an exhaust manifold gasket to locate the flanges for the head. Initially I made the carburettor to supercharger manifold to suite a single 2” SU. It was just not up to the job and it was replaced by twin 1¾” HIF6 SU’s. Which are easy to tune.”

After sorting out a few teething prob-lems John was out for a run in his white MGC when he noticed a flash from flames trying to escape from un-der the bonnet. Fortunately he had a small fire extinguisher so he popped the bonnet open and squirted it at the flames. The flames were reduced until, unfortunately, the extinguisher was empty and they were back with vengeance. I’m sure you can imagine what happened while John waited 20 minutes until the fire brigade arrived. It was back to square one!

Page 31: APRIL 2017 VOL . 58 NO . 03 · 2017-04-06 · PRESIDENT Adrian Ward Mob. 0400 577 169 Email. adrianward@adam.com.au P VICE PRESIDENT Tim Edmonds 1 Toohey Cresent Pasadena 5042 Mob

29

April 2017

The car was rebuilt and re-painted red. I guess that’s so the flames won’t be so noticeable next time? Fortu-nately there hasn’t been a next time and the C is per-forming very well. John fit-ted a digital speedo which coincidentally looks very close to the original one. Depending on the program selected the speedo is able to give him speed, time and distance. So his best standing ¼ mile has taken 14.55 seconds at a speed of 157.6 kph. Not bad considering the time tested by Autocar in 1968 was 18.2 seconds for an auto.

‘MGCs Down Under’ will describe John’s modification of his MGC in de-tail with lots of photos. John shared his supercharged plans with long time mate John Sheppard (HDT team

manager 1978-79) who thought it was a great idea and wanted one himself. A photo of his engine bay appeared in last month’s car club magazine. So, there are at least two supercharged MGCs in Melbourne!

Remember ladies and gentlemen keep ‘em tuned, Rich

MSCA Presentation Picnic

O n Sunday 26 February the MSCA picnic was held at Virgara Win-

ery at Angle Vale. The site was great with lush green lawns to park and sit on and plenty of shade. There was also a winery and Subway nearby (very different target markets). We had six MGs on display, one MGB roadster, two MGB GTV8s, one MGTC, one MGZR and one MGA. In a parallel nearby display were a Lotus and a Toyota 86. The MG display theme was MGs in motorsport (thanks to Sandra for the idea) and we adorned our cars with old photos and racing memorabilia. The Alfa club had a display depicting forty years of their club which was judged to be better and they won. There was some seri-ous banter between Bev and her son-in-law who was directing the Alfa dis-play. Trophies for the 2016 sprint series were presented and MG members were rewarded as follows: John Davies Class win and Sprint Champion Jason Edwards Class Win Laurie Houghton Class Win Congratulations to all our competitors and thanks to the flaggies.

MSCA Come & Try Super Sprint 12 March

On Sunday 12 March the MSCA ran the first SA Come & Try super sprint at Mallala. The MSCA of Victoria has been running these for approx three years and their leaders, Bruce and Petrina Astbury, came over to run this day. They also brought two regular Vic instructors, Kim Cole and Les Bone, to help. A total of sixteen regu-lar sprinters worked as instructors with competing on the day as well.

The C&T participants had three class-room sessions, two on track sessions with an instructor and two sessions solo. They had the same number of laps as the regular sprinters and C&T groups were fitted in after the sprint-ers. Five MGCC SA members partici-pated, Nick Micklem (MGZR), Steve Spong (MGBGT), Christine Oppatt

(Supra), Brian Hills (MGBV8) and Karen Stephenson (MGA), and Garry Bolt and Murray Stephenson acted as instructors.

The weather was very unkind at times and the participants had a great time in torrential rain, particularly in the open cars! The objective of the day was to develop skills and to introduce participants to sprinting so that, if they come back for a “real” sprint, it won’t be as daunting. Although there was room to improve on the organization the day was a success and the feeling from partici-pants and instructors was very posi-tive. It is anticipated that MSCA will do this again but as yet a date has not been set.

Thanks to all the drivers and instruc-tors who made this a great day. And

Super Sprint Rnd 1 Mallala By John Davies

T he 1st Super Sprint round for the year was held on 12th March and

MG CC had 10 entries in a large field of 94 with 6 MG's and 4 non Marque cars.

The MSCA was holding a Come & Try as part of the Sprint and with an addi-tional 24 entries it made for a large field but the MSCA did a great job as usual and it was a very well run event. It was our turn to provide Flaggies for the day and a big thankyou to Alan Cardnell, Dean Hosking, Wes Bray and Craig Steel who assisted in this area.

The forecast for the day was for pos-sible showers/thunderstorms and al-though it looked optimistic early the heavens opened during the drivers briefing making a very wet and slip-pery (and entertaining for the drivers) first run.

Fastest MG for the day went to Lau-rie, Garry Bolt had his new car out and completed 14 laps this event, a big improvement on just 1 lap at the last event last year. Garry still has some work to do sorting the car with fuel starvation and overheating issues (overheating on a British car, No couldn't be!) Rob had a Good day in the newly acquired ZS and had a tight tussle with Dick Manning and both enjoyed a great day of sprinting. Lindsay ran well in the TC and it was great to see Tony back out in his MG B.

In the Non Marque group Scott had the Circuit Excel out with the full 3 Driver team running to test and set the car for the upcoming Bathurst 6Hr. The car ran well and all 3 drivers did 20 laps with good consistent times. Good Luck at Bathurst guys. Craig had issues all day loosing alternator belts and finally also breaking the main belt and only managed 2 laps for the day but still got to drive the car home. Jason had a solid day and again made the top 10 in the Batmo-bile. I had a good run in sprint 2 but broke the right rear diff mounting bar and decided to call it a day to prevent any further damage to the car.

Sunday 30 April – Multi Club Hill-climb, Round 1, Collingrove

The first round of the Sporting Car Club’s Multi Club series will be held at Collingrove. Submit entries via the CAMS event entry system which is accessed through the CAMS member portal. Entries close approx one week before the event so keep an eye on the SCCSA website.

Sunday 7 May – Peter Hall Memo-rial Six Hour.

The Six Hour is coming up in four weeks. It’s a great team event which tests twenty five teams against each other to cover the most laps at a steady pace. It’s a lot of fun for drivers and crew and the day is finished off with the presentation dinner. Team Emgee has had some success in the past and hope to do well again. The pit crew is as important as the drivers

so, if you haven’t volunteered yet, please contact Murray or Peter to vol-unteer.

Queen’s Birthday Weekend – MG Challenge, Victoria

The MG Challenge is another great traditional rivalry between Victoria and South Australia which is generally run each year, alternating between Vic and SA. Due to Nat Meets and other distractions it has not been run since 2014. This year it is in Victoria. A Hill-climb at Rob Roy and a super sprint at Sandown make up the motor sport components and there is always time for one or two social outings for a good feed and a chat. With the poten-tial demise of Sandown in the not too distant future this may be one of the last opportunities to compete there.

Contact Murray or Peter if you are interested to enter.

MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From Diane Holmes

Thursday 9 March, 2017. Mt Barker

T hankfully the temperature had dropped ten degrees from our

last lunch run & it was great to see so many MGs turning up for coffee at the Arkaba Hotel – mostly with the tops down – for another return to The Barker Hotel. We headed up the free-way to exit at Stirling & then took the wonderful winding way through Aldgate, Bridgewater & the leafy main street in Hahndorf. These hills are such a feature and a wonderful play-ground for our beautiful MGs.

Brian & Kath Golding drove up from Murray Bridge for a first visit to the lunch runs & as we are heading their way next month they will be joining us

again. It will also give us the opportu-nity to catch up with Raelene & Jim from Meningie. Quite a while ago we visited another hotel in Murray Bridge so this is a first time visit & later in the year there are a few more new ven-ues on the horizon.

Next mid week lunch run will be on 6 April (first Thursday due to Easter) to the Bridgeport Hotel at Murray Bridge meeting at the Craf-ers Inn at 10.30am and departing at 110.30am. and if you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes – email [email protected] or phone 8336 4557.

MG Car Club of South Australia

CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR

F or the remainder of this year, if you continue to register your

car on Conditional Registration you are not required to present your new registration papers for updating our records nor are you required at this time, to have your new registration paper stamped by the Club. Simply update your log book with the new dates. Use the space on the left of the “Commencement Date” and “Expiry Date” fields to write in the new dates in the current membership year. However, please remember to bring your new blue registration papers and proof of payment to the log book up-date period for the next membership year to the clubrooms (when making a subscription payment in January/February) or when a new log book is required, whichever comes first.

If you require a new log book during the year (and re-inspection), please come to the clubrooms on or before the date shown in red at the top of your log book, on one of the sched-uled inspection times, from 10am to 12 noon on the second or fourth Sat-urday of the month until December. In December it will take place on the first and second Saturdays. Remem-ber to bring the blue registration pa-pers, proof of payment and your old log book for cancellation.

On a completely different topic, some-times adversity can bring out some good. At Crafers, on the night of the last month’s T-register outing, a drive to Alan Golding’s place at Murray Bridge, I suffered what is politely

called a “show stopper”. Some know this sort of incident by other names, none of them pleasant or worthy of mentioning, so I won’t.

Anyway, upon pulling the starter knob I heard a weird noise, a sort of groan. Pulling the knob again, a sound of tin dinner plates being rapidly struck, emanating from under the bonnet. A couple of members rushed over to see what had happened and to offer advice. No it wasn’t the fan against the radia-tor or some foreign object. Nor the clutch either. It was in fact, the re-straining spring that hides within the starter motor pinion gear. This spring normally holds back the pinion from the ring gear immediately the engine starts, at the top of the spiral drive. Mine failed this important step as the spring had broken and with the pinion gear bouncing on and off the ring gear on the engines flywheel, made the car undriveable. I might add, breakage of this spring is a rare event, thank goodness.

So what to do? Climb under the car and remove the starter motor or call the RAA? I weakened as night was falling and called the RAA. Two hours later, we were home again in North Adelaide after a nice ride home in a tow truck.

The question is, can something be done to get out of having to call for a tow? Obviously, removal of the starter motor would help, but can it be pulled out without removing the oil filter on an MGA? If that is required, it presents a major issue for one stranded on roadside.

April 2017 I will report back on that procedure when I remove the starter at home. However, there is a “work around” if you have on hand 18 inches of fine wire. From underneath the car, with a wire formed in a “u” shape, you can loop the shaft in front of the pinion gear and pull it back and then tie it off around the rebound spring at the end of the shaft. Problem solved. You just need a push or use of the starting handle and you’ll be back on the road going to wherever you were intending to go, without the embarrassment of having to wait for a tow truck to bring you home!

From adversity, comes the fix: agile use of a piece fine wire; make sure you carry some (along with overalls), it could be useful when you least ex-pect it.

BREAKFAST RUN NEWS From..Steve Spong

Mount Barker 26th February 2017

A s the number of attendees suggests, it was a perfect

day to take the cars for a run. It was good to welcome several club new-comers along to the event, as too the guests of vari-ous members and all in MGs no less. Ron & Julia came along in their brand new convertible V8 Mustang, an impressive machine indeed!.

The route was via Coromandel, Iron Bank, Bradbury and Mylor, with a few travellers losing their way at times but all eventually making it for breakfast or at least brunch.

MG Car Club of South Australia

O n Sunday 19th February, club

member David Maxwell and I attended the Flemington Concours at Flemington race course, Melbourne. This is an annual event and is open to all British and European cars. It is also the premier event for the local MG Car Club of Victoria.

On arrival at the race course and after recovering from a $20 charge to park our car, we entered the event at a very reasonable $5 fee. First in view was the Mercedes Benz Club who had a very large display of cars rang-ing from early limousines, sedans and sports cars including an original gull-wing up to the latest AMG gullwing. Chamois were being regularly used after every shower to keep them look-ing good!

On the MG front, there was a large display of many models with the club’s main feature being a display of MGCs, being its 50

th

anniversary. There was also a feature of the T/TF range being its 20 year anniver-sary. For MGC fans, the highlight for me was the supercharged MGC roadster done very professionally (see photos). As you might imagine, there were plenty of very well presented MGs of most models on show, including modern ver-sion up to the Chinese MG6. MGBs were

FLEMINGTON CONCOURS 2017 By Stephen Holmes

most numerous as usual, with many excellent MGB GT V8s, plus other standard and modified cars.

The venue was excellent, but the weather was less so, typical Mel-bourne 4 seasons in one day. In fact it was only 3 seasons, summer wasn’t around.

Many other makes and models were on display. Aston Martin, Roll Royce, Triumph, Austin Healy, Ford Cortinas, Jaguar, Minis, Rover etc. There were even 6 Daimler Darts, not often you see 6 of them in a row these days. A variety of trade stalls were present and the usual catering was available. It is an event well worth visiting and I imagine it may well have been bigger if the weather had been kinder. I’ll happily return in future years. Stephen Holmes
