TGIS! (Thank Goodness Its Spring!) There were a few days this Winter when I thought I would never make it, but here we are. Unless we get a snow storm, snow pants are no longer required, YEAH!!! April brings us to our annual state assessment, The Forward Exam for students in grade 3, 4, and 5. The test covers math and reading, as well as science and social studies for 4th graders. The results of the tests are used in a variety of ways from the federal, state, and local agencies. The state school and district report cards are partially based on this test. Classroom teachers and schools also look at the data. At Halmstad Elementary, we look at the individual results as well as grade level. The data helps us determine if our programming is being effective and if we are teaching students in the most effective manner. Because these tests are high stakes, we ask for your help. Please make sure your child gets plenty of restful sleep the night before their test. A positive note or word of encouragement for them to do their best goes a long way as well. The computer based tests are spread out over several days because of the stress and intensity. We simply do not want to give them more than they can handle in one sitting. Thank you for your support in this matter; we want to show everyone why Halmstad is the best school in the Chippewa Valley! If you have any questions about the test, please feel free to give me a call at the school. Mr. Pilloud

Madison, WI - Gov. Scott Walker has declared April 9-13 as Wisconsin’s
Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. WI Emergency
Management, the National Weather Service (NWS) and the WI
Broadcasters Association (WBA) have once again teamed up to sponsor
the statewide tornado drills scheduled for Thursday, April 12.
Schools, businesses, families, and individuals have two opportunities to
test their emergency plans during April 12 statewide tornado drills. The
drills are part of the annual spring severe weather campaign to encourage
everyone in Wisconsin to be ready for possible tornadoes and severe
weather.
According to the NWS, Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually, Last
year, there were 23 tornado touchdowns in the state. While most were
either EF0 or EF1, the state did record an EF3 on May 16, 2017. The
tornado followed an 83-mile path across Polk, Barron, Rusk, and Price
counties, killing one person and causing widespread damage. The state
also experienced an outbreak of 10 tornadoes on June 14, 2017, across
Shawano, Winnebago, Outagamie, Brown, and Waushara counties.
A mock tornado watch will be issued April 12 at 1 p.m., followed by a
statewide mock tornado warning at 1:45 p.m. Many radio and TV stations
across the state will issue the test tornado warnings. In addition, mock
alerts will be issued on NOAA Weather Radios and many communities will
sound their tornado sirens to test their emergency severe weather plans.
Later, a mock tornado warning will be issued at 6:45 p.m. to give families
and a second shift workers a chance to practice their emergency plans.
The tornado drill will take place even if the sky is cloudy, dark, or rainy. If
actual severe storms are expected in the state on Thursday, April 12, the
tornado drills will be postponed until Friday, April 13 with the same times.
If severe storms are possible Friday, the drills will be cancelled.
Any changes will be issued to local media as well as posted on the Ready
Wiconsin website at http://readywisconsin.wi.gov.

April is National Credit Union Youth Month!
Every child dreams about their future. Some of those dreams may require money to come true. How do you help your children
achieve their dreams?
One way is to help them learn how to save their money.
To help your children get into the savings habit, start by having them cut out
pictures of something they’d like to have someday and post the images where
they’ll see them often. Encourage your child to make regular small deposits into
their savings account each week. Tell them their money will earn interest while it’s
in their account. If they keep this routine going, they’ll quickly see their savings
grow.
This April, Royal is celebrating National Credit Union Youth Month, which is a program that helps teach and encourage kids to
develop good financial habits. The theme this year is “The Science of Saving.” Science has proven that if you start with small goals,
saving your money can become a regular habit. We work to inspire children to save their money so they can attain their dreams of
a happy future.
In April, each class at Halmstad Elementary will have a chance to win a classroom
basket filled with fun activities and supplies to share! Participating classrooms will
simply need to submit their class activity sheet by April 24th in order to be entered in
the drawing. Also, Super Savers will receive Double Stamps on April 24th to celebrate
and help them earn more fun prizes!
Remember Halmstad Elementary Royal Credit Union School $ense is open every
Tuesday to help your child develop good saving habits. If you have any questions about the program, please contact, Amanda

PARENTS - Please note that the speed limit entering the schoolyard and leaving is 10 MPH. Please pull Forward,Stop, Drop Off, and Go! This will help with the traffic backup. Your children should be dropped off on the curbside and not the outer lane. Buses and cars are using that lane to enter and exit the yard. Please be watching for children at all times. WALKERS AND BIKE RIDERS- The Safety Patrols have been doing their best to keep you safe as you cross the street to come to school or to go home. It is very important that you listen to them and follow their directions. They are there for your safety. Please be respectful to the safety patrols. ALWAYS come to a complete stop when you approach a crosswalk with students on it and drive the speed limit in front of the school. Driving through, when the flag poles are extended, is not a good habit to get into. If you are unsure, just stop and wait for everyone to clear the street. If you have any questions, please call the school. Diane Bradley, Safety Patrol Advisor

Important information regarding Wisconsin immunization requirements for the 2018-19 school year.
FOR INCOMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS-2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR: Wisconsin state law requires students
to be immunized within 30 days from the start of school. Below are Wisconsin immunization requirements:
• 4 doses of DTaP, DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis/whooping cough) or DT (diphtheria, tetanus) vaccine.
A dose may be needed for children entering kindergarten if one of the DTaP doses was not given after the
fourth birthday.
• 4 doses polio vaccine
• 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine - at least one dose must be after 6 months old
• 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine
• 2 doses of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or parent report that the child has had chickenpox illness with a
date of the disease
FOR INCOMING 6TH GRADERS- 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR: The Wisconsin Student Immunization law requires
a Tdap, the adolescent combination vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis
(whooping cough), within 30 days from the start of the 6th grade school year.
If your child still needs any of these vaccines, we encourage you to have your child immunized well before
school starts to avoid the late summer rush at the Health Department or at your doctor’s office. Please
bring your updated immunization records with you at registration. Please contact your school nurse with
any questions. Nurse Julie: 715-215-1598 or Nurse Kerrie: 715-215-1596

Tips for a Healthy Cookout From traditional favorites such as hot dogs to side dishes and desserts, grilling is a great way to add flavor to all types of food. Make sure you do it right with these healthy grilling tips.
Before the Big Cookout - Start by cleaning your grill. Scrub it with hot, soapy water. Then, when you're ready to cook, allow the grill to heat up sufficiently to eliminate potential bacteria problems. Make sure you have the right tools. Relying on color alone does not ensure the doneness of meat, poultry and fish. A food thermometer is the only way to ensure food has been cooked to a safe internal temperature.
Remember to pack extra plates and utensils because it's important to separate: use one set for raw meat, poultry and seafood; and the other set for cooked and ready-to-eat foods. The same rule of separation applies when marinating foods. Do not use the same brush to baste raw meat as you do for cooked foods, as doing so can contaminate the cooked foods and result in food poisoning.
Setting the Menu - Once you're equipped for a safe cookout, think beyond the traditional favorites. Start building your healthful barbecue around fruits and vegetables, which are low in calories, high in fiber and packed with the nutrients you need. Look no further than your local grocery store or farmers' market for fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Here are a few ideas for featuring fruits and vegetables at your barbecue: Go Lean: Grill marinated Portobello mushrooms or turkey burgers. Ground turkey breast can be as lean as 99 percent fat-free. Add cilantro, shallots or chili sauce to spice things up. Or, mix in feta cheese, Kalamata olives, oregano and pepper and serve on a pita with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers for a Greek-style burger. Just remember to use a food thermometer to ensure ground turkey reaches a safe temperature of 165°F.
Grill Vegetables: Baste vegetables such as red peppers, corn, eggplant, summer squash, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms or onions, season with herbs and place directly on a hot grill (or a piece of tin foil) until they are tender and brown.
Don't Forget Dessert: Grill fruit kabobs, pineapple slices or peach halves on low heat until the fruit is hot
and slightly golden for a tasty and nutritious dessert. Grill watermelon for 30 seconds on each side to bring out
unique flavors. You also could carve out a watermelon to use as a bowl for fruit salad!

Communication with Chippewa Falls Unified School District
The Chippewa Falls School District is very concerned about the safety of all Students. Fire drills, Severe weather drills, and all
school lockdown drills are practiced at various times.
Fire Drills - Schedule one each month, weather permitting. Information is recorded for the Wisconsin Department of Commerce in
Madison and sent at the end of each school year.
Severe Weather Drills - Practiced in the spring of the year. Students kneel down on the floor, covering their heads until the all-
clear signal is given.
School lockdown Drills - Held at least twice a school year. The students practice the drill to become familiar with the routine.
Classroom doors are locked, the lights are often turned off, and students are instructed to remain silent until the all-clear signal is
given.
It is important to talk with your children why we have these drills. If you have any questions regarding these drills please contact
the school office.
