Susan McFaddenCover Artist

Susan McFadden, our cover artist, began painting in 2013 following a 30-year hiatus in fiber arts. After realizing that she could return to painting, she discovered that many of her craftsman skills could be trans-lated into a new medium. She has studied on-line with painters whose styles she admires. Sue enjoys painting portraits, figures, still life and landscapes using acrylics and oil on paper, canvas and board. She and her hus-band live in State College, Pennsylvania, but have been drawn to the sugar white sands of Fort Myers Beach for almost 20 years and re-cently purchased a vacation home here and joined the Fort Myers Beach Art Association. Sue finds that painting makes her feel alive and hopes that joy is translated in her paint-ings. To see more of Sue’s artwork,

Bobby Blakey comes from a mu-sical family. “My Dad was a pastor who played organ and piano, so obviously there was a lot of Gospel music, along with Jazz and some Latin sounds. Mom played piano and my sister clarinet. All the men on Mom’s side were guitarists, and Dad’s brother a musician, so music was always in my life.” When Bobby grew up during the 1990s, he was a fan of Nirvana and even some Country, “but as I got older, I gravi-tated to music with great melodies and fun sounds, as I like that positive vibe. When I came across The Beatles, that changed how I looked at music. That led me to Dave Matthews and John Mayer, and when I play a set today, I go from Jack Johnson to Frank Sinatra to Stevie Wonder, although it is fun to play some new stuff, too.” Bobby is a Floridian, from Arca-dia, who moved to the Fort Myers area in 2001, but didn’t get into music until 2005. “I started going to open mic nights and found a weekly gig at Stevie Tomato’s. I hooked up with ‘The Drunk Monkeys’ and we began playing fulltime, going from one steady job a week to six! After a while, though, I started playing more solo, be-

cause as you get older, it loses its appeal to perform every night until 2 a.m. My wife has a day job, and I like spending eve-nings with her, because keeping our rela-tionship strong is most important!” Catch Bobby at various FMB venues throughout April: he is at the Dixie Fish House on Mondays, April 2, 16, & 30, from 5 to 8pm and Thursdays April 12 & 26 from 5:30-8:30pm; Shucker’s on Tues-days, April 3 & 17, from 4 to 7pm.; Yucatan Beach Stand Tuesdays, April 10 & 24 from 6 to 9pm and Thursday, April 12, from 2 to 5pm; every Tuesday at Valerie’s from 10pm to close; Doc Fords on Friday, April 20, from 6:30 to 9:30pm; Friday, April 13, at The Beached Whale from 6 to 9pm; and Saturday, April 7, at Cabana’s at Diamond-Head from 1 to 4pm. He also plays with the 3 Crooked Steps and the Bad Banditos. For more information on Bobby visit his Facebook at bobbyblakey. “I honesty appreciate all the places that hire me,” he says. I have played at some of these spots for years, and am fortunate to be friends with so many people at these venues. I couldn’t do it without the support of my wife, Char-ity, and my bandmates, Michael Brophy, John Coccia, Mark Kobie, and Hector Ri-vera, Jr., are great! The Fort Myers Beach and Cape Coral areas are little gems for live music, and I love it!”

Hollywood returns to Southwest Florida with the 12th Fort Myers Beach Film Festival from Wednesday, April 25, through Sunday, April 29, at The Beach Theater at 6425 Estero Boulevard. “The FMB Film Festival originally began in 2000,” ex-

plained spokesperson Tanya Kaish Keller. “A major sponsor was the Town of Fort Myers Beach, but in 2005, a new Town Coun-cil cut the funding, so it faded to black! The Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts reorganized it in 2012 because the Film Fes-tival is fantastic for business and wonderful for locals.” A small committee selects the films. “This is not glamorous,” Tanya re-lated, “as they must preview every submission to decide which ones make the cut. They release the final schedule in early April.” The Festival begins Wednesday, April 25, with the free Opening Ceremony at 2 p.m. Movies continue through Saturday, April 28, at 3, 6 & 9 p.m. The Festival concludes Sunday, April 29, with the Awards Ceremony open to the public at 2 p.m., followed by paid showings of the winning films. Each screening session is $7, with weeklong VIP Passes including the Saturday workshop at $150. Tanya said a Festival highlight is the free “Movie on The Mound” on the grounds of the fantastic Mound House on Satur-day, April 28, with the smash Disney hit family-friendly feature, “Coco!” Light refreshments will be available for a nominal fee. Bring blankets and lawn chairs, and dress for appropriate weath-er. Activities begin at 7 p.m., with the movie at sunset. The Mound House is at 451 Connecticut Street. The FMB Film Festival once again has two workshops, Tanya stated. “Kyle Thompson of Red Flight Pictures hosts the first, on Friday, April 27; with Stanley Isaacs and Alyn Darnay holding theirs on Saturday the 28th, to relate how to interest peo-ple in your film, from pre-production through completion and dis-tribution. Friday’s workshop is $30, with Saturday’s at $40, and lunch is provided with each. There is limited seating so reserve your spot now.” Film Festival sponsors include The Beach Theater, The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, Fish-Tale Marina, the Greater Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts, GullWing Beach Resort and Lovers Key Resort, with additional sponsorships still available. “We definitely need volunteer ticket-takers as well,” said Tan-ya. “If you can assist, see our webpage.” All events except the “Movie on The Mound” are at The Beach Theater; to view the full schedule; become a sponsor, volunteer, or to purchase tickets or register for workshops , see Facebook at www.face-b o o k . c o m /fmbfilmfest or FMBFilmFest.com. F o r Tanya, the best part of the Fort My-ers Beach Film Festival is that “peo-ple travel here from all over the state, to enjoy nation-al and even international filmmakers. The even cooler part is that folks who live on the island can see these magnificent movies from inde-pendent filmmakers ahead of the curve. You may even discover a future star, and how exciting is that, right here in our own back-yard!”

By Rae BurnsTown of Fort Myers Beach Environmental & Stormwater Technician

Black Drum are a common fish around Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel, and a popular one to catch just offshore and in Estero Bay. They are the largest members of the family Sciaenidae (sigh-EE-nih-dee …. Hooray for Latin). Sciaenids have the ability to produce a “croaking” or “drumming” sound. In order to make these noises, sciaenids developed special muscle fibers that run horizontal to their swimbladder, called sonic muscles. As these muscles contract, the vi-brations produce the drumming sound. Black Drum are found all over the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North and South America. The most common habitats juvenile drums are found in are estuaries like the mangrove habitats in Estero Bay. As they grow, they move into bays, river mouths, oyster beds and offshore areas. They will use dock and bridge pilings as places to hunt and hang out. Black Drum are the largest of the Drum fish species. All life stages of Black Drum have barbels under their chin, using these whiskers that look a lot like a beatnik’s soulpatch beard to feel out small prey. As juveniles, Black Drum are grey with black vertical stripes to help with camouflage in the estuaries where they grow up. As they hit 12 to 24 inches, they lose their stripes, and at 24 inches the stripes are gone. Adults living in the Gulf of Mexico become a solid grey col-or. Adults that stay around muddy bay waters have dark gray or light bronze backs and sides. Black Drum are primarily bottom feeders. They normally eat worms and small fish as juveniles; as adults they consume fish, oysters, mussels, crabs and shrimp. There have been studies off the Atlantic that put Black Drums living up to 60 years and weighing up to 132 pounds. Conversely, in the Gulf of Mexico, the larg-est individual was 50 pounds, and the oldest 44 years old. Scientists do not have a consensus on why this difference exists. Although Black Drum is often overshadowed by its more well-known cousin, the Redfish (aka red drum), it is a delicious fish. Black Drum is a white meat fish with a mild and sweet flavor, with firm

flesh similar to Redfish. The smaller fish tend to have the most flavor, but after reaching up to or over 24 inches, it loses flavor and becomes coarse. To avoid taking too many non-breeding-age fish out of the ecosystem before breeding, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission set a size limit that can be kept to 14 to 24 inches, including one al-lowed fish over 24 inches, with a total allowed of 5 fish per day to keep. High season for fishing is January through March and October to December, with low season June to July. There is no closed season, so you can enjoy Black Drum all year long, but cold weather brings in the most variety of fish sizes.

The Annual Winter Concert Series brings in regional and even national musical acts to the Santini Marina Plaza at 7205 Es-tero Boulevard, to entertain beach residents

and visitors. It concludes its 6th season in a homegrown fashion, however, with the Local Artists Showcase on Thursday, April 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sheena Brook, made fa-mous by her appearances on “The Voice,” with island musical icon Jo List singing just before Sheena, and “The Pearl Street Band”

opening the show. “When the Winter Concert Series first began, most of our entertainers were is-land musicians,” said Janeen Paulauskis, se-ries spokesperson, “so this performance in a way brings us back to its founding roots. Shee-na represented Fort Myers Beach so well on ‘The Voice’ last year, and the ever-popular and beloved island legend, Jo List, has quite a fol-lowing of her own and everyone just loves her! ‘The Pearl Street Band’ is gaining a big reputa-tion as well. As for the headliners, Sheena and Jo are quite simply as talented as any singers in the country, so people will really enjoy this concert.” Opening the Local Artists Showcase is “The Pearl Street Band,” made up of island musicians Mike McMillian, Ed Summers, Bob Williams and frequently Bill Veach, who are acoustic entertainers that specialize in original Americana music or obscure covers. “We play unusual music for the beach,” explained Bob, “that you don’t hear elsewhere, where you lis-ten to ‘Margaritaville’ or Brown Eyed Girl’ every other song, so there isn’t another show like us.” The Winter Concert Series benefits the Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts that promotes creative arts on the island, including the visual, sound, and taste varieties. It spon-sors four large-scale events each year, with the Fort Myers Beach Film Festival, Sustainability Dinner and Paint the Beach Plein Air Art Festi-val joining the Winter Concert Series. You can become a member of the Friends of the Arts through its website, and help to help bring the arts and its various festivals to the beach com-munity. Tickets to the Local Artists Showcase are $25; for information or to buy tickets, call 239-463-3600, extension #3, or go to FMBarts.org. If you miss Sheena at the Local Art-

ists Showcase, or just want to listen to her beautiful voice again, catch her two evenings later at the inaugural “Music on The Mound” on Sat-urday, April 21, at the iconic Mound House at 451 Connecticut Street. There are only 150 tickets, at $10 for members and $15 non-members. It is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Sheena performing from 6 to 7. There will be food and beer vendors, with coolers prohibited, and bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. For tickets, call the Mound House at 239-765-0865.

The LoggerheadsFort Myers Beach Turtle Season to Begin

By Gary [email protected]

Florida sea turtle nesting season is observed annually from May 1 through October 31, though in Southwest Florida this year, monitoring begins on April 15 due to the warm Gulf water temperatures. Of the several hundred nests expected in our area, virtually all of those on Fort Myers Beach will be from loggerhead turtles. Loggerhead skin is yellow to brown, with a reddish-brown shell. They spend most of their life in saltwater and estuary habitats, with females briefly coming on-shore to lay eggs. Loggerheads are commonly called the bulldozers of the sea, because their feeding patterns as bottom-dwelling invertebrates leaves behind a pattern similar to a bulldoz-er digging in the land. They are endangered, with efforts to restore their numbers requiring international cooperation, as they roam vast areas of the ocean, with critical nesting ar-eas across several continents. An ecological rule-of-thumb is what is good for sea turtles is good for people, as our two species are interdependent on each other. Nesting turtles will travel thou-sands of miles, from their feeding grounds back to the beaches of their own birth to nest. Loggerheads nest 3 to 7 times a season, roughly every 11 to 15 days, with the hatch-lings having an incubation period of approx-imately 2 months. Each nest can have up to 100 or more eggs, and the nest temperature determines their gender: cooler sand results in mostly males, while warmer produces females. Recent research out of Florida At-lantic University indicates that warming sand

temperatures have resulted in the vast ma-jority of turtles born on Florida beaches being female. Out of every 1,000 hatchlings, per-haps 1 to 4 will survive to adulthood. They are about 2 inches long, hatch at night, and crawl to the seaward horizon. Adults can be over 3 feet and weigh 300 pounds, and do not reach maturity until they are between 20 to 40 years old in an average lifespan of 50 to 70 years. The primary bane to nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings is artificial light from beachfront properties that can prevent females from coming ashore, or selecting an inferior location from which few hatchlings will survive. Lights disorient the hatchlings, causing them to move toward that and away from the ocean, resulting in death from dehy-dration, exhaustion, or automobiles. Hatch-lings move toward water based on natural seaward light from where the sky and water meet on the horizon, but if they see a bright-er, usually artificial light, they move toward that and their doom. Beachfront visitors can prevent this by only using Wildlife Friendly Fixtures with an Amber LED bulb. (bit.ly/TurtleLites) Never shine a flashlight or use flash photography on a sea turtle, nor approach them on the beach, and remove all beach furniture, boats, tents, toys, or like items from the beach by 9 p.m. Fill in holes dug in the sand, because these can trap hatchlings and even adults. If you find a hatchling in the day-time, place it in a dry container and call Tur-tle Time immediately; to report a disoriented, lost, injured or dead hatchling or turtle, con-tact Turtle Time Inc. at 239-481-5566 or www.turtletime.org.

GENERAL COMMENTS: Okay, really? Easter falls on April Fool’s Day? Though not official-ly recognized, some biblical scholars think the origin of April Fools’ Day dates back to Noah, who sent the dove out on a fool’s errand on April 1st, before the flood water receded. That’s in Genesis, in the Old Testament. Easter, of course, is in the New Testament, and is about reincarnation, or life after death. Weird juxtaposition. Well, they’re in alignment - get ready for a weird month!

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)This month the IMF (Int. Monetary Fund) will install a new currency (SDR, Special Drawing Rights) to replace the USD as the world’s reserve currency. This will play havoc with some Aries’ sinuses. The smell of burning rubber will be a constant annoyance as monetary machines bump and grind. For relief you decide to blame it on the red tide instead, and head out the door to find a breakfast place that’s still open. On the way you’ll meet a friend and go shopping.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)Crossword puzzles will inflict all kinds of ‘fun’ stuff into your lives this month. Crosswords are generated by companies that “supposedly” choose clues randomly from a “crossword dictionary” when designing a new crossword puzzle. These definition/clues are short, like Tweets. Data mining NSA for keywords that are ‘hot’ (mind control stuff), they get thrown into the puzzle clues to control your mind. Avoid the black squares! That’s where the algorithms that run the crossword puzzles are hidden. Don’t look! They’ll know you’re onto them.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)Think you need your lucky rabbit’s foot this month? Think again. A rabbit foot is not just a rabbit’s foot. To qualify it has to have been col-lected by a cross-eyed man hunting in a cemetery on either a full moon (to capture it) or a new moon (to cut off the foot). Oh, and it has to be the left hind foot. Guaranteed that’s not your lucky rabbit’s foot. By the way, it’s Easter! You know - Easter Bunnies? Lose the foot.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22)You may get the urge to run around in teeny-tiny circles this month when you’re hit with a sudden onslaught of Friends’ selfies on your newsfeed. It makes you feel like someone who’s stumbled on a packed subway platform during rush hour, with trains rushing by, while a busker with a squeezebox plays Amazing Grace out of tune. All those strange, gawking selfies watching as you stumble. Gonna be a weird month!

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) Thank god we made it out of the gloom and into the sunshine! The thing with horoscopes is that they cycle through highs and lows, de-pending on the alignment and balance of the cosmos. It’s like the weather in SW Florida - it’s all cool … until it’s not. Lucky for you, the warmth of April will wash over you like a bowl of chili peppers. If you’ve never experienced that you’re in for a surprise.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept 22)Have you ever marveled at how much activity goes on inside your head, while outside you look like you’re about to start drooling? You look like you’re a million miles away, and you are - in your mind. To pull yourself out of that, you stare down at your Fruit-Loops, marveling at all the festive colors floating in milk in your bowl. Then you notice that

your family is staring at you, worried looks on their faces. The perfect spy, you give them your winning grin, and everything’s alright.

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)Sometime this month you’ll be staring off into space with your atten-tion on nothing in particular. Just daydreaming about the mountains or something. Out in Colorado a hippie chick is making up her mind to paint her toes tangerine. A tendril of quantum entanglement stretches out and glues you two together (though oblivious of each other’s exis-tence) and next thing you know you’re going to want to paint your nails tangerine. Deep, right?

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)With the release of the cold winter’s hold on our psyche, plants will start flowering, and down here that means a lot of colors! Like buds sprouting on a willow branch you’ll get all these great ideas about proj-ects you’ve been wanting to get done once the weather warmed up. If you’re lucky you’re reading this on April 1st, which is the precise moment you can put all these activities to bed by saying, “April Fool!” Otherwise, you’re committed.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)Your peak times this month will be those moments right before the full moon starts to fade, or the new moon starts to get bigger. You’re going to have to check the tide charts because it will be really close. Plan to be near a lottery store to grab those winning tickets when this happens. The moon phases have nothing to do with the lottery, but it’s as good as any reason to buy the winning lottery tickets.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)A great month to flee the tides and wade the marshes. That doesn’t make much sense because, really, what does that mean? Nothing, right? Well, during a down time this month just copy and past that line into a FB posting. Pick an appropriate emoticon (something weird) to go with it. Set that out into your newsfeed like bait, and check back in a couple hours. You’ll have hours of fun answering the comments. And all of it is nonsense! Life’s good!

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)You’ll wonder sometimes if there really are aliens living amongst us. And why would’t you? The evidence is all around us! Like, where do all the Bic lighters go? Haven’t you ever wondered that? According to released Blue Book documents they’ve been a form of currency for decades amongst our unregistered visitors from another planet. Evi-dently they export them back to their home planets as new technology. Who can understand aliens, right?

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) The mystical moment the moon rises over the rim of the planet is like a wave of lunacy coming up and smacking you in the middle of your Id like a momma bird feeding her babies. Hopefully you don’t have too many friends who are Leos. That wouldn’t be good. You know how they get around full moons. Just keep an eye on them this month. Meanwhile, keep frosty!

DISCLAIMER: You know how some mental health professionals can sit and talk with you for 20 minutes and decide whether you’re crazy or not? They must be fricking geniuses! I, on the other hand, know nothing about astrological predictions, much less the complexities that make you who you are. My projections are imaginary meanderings designed to amuse. If you were able to find insight in your astrological sign that means you’re smarter than me and that mental health professional. Kudos!
