The Misty Dawn before the overhaul

Eddie Moore is one happy boat owner after his vessel MFV ‘Misty Dawn’ T 539 went for a successful refurbishment with Ryan & Roberts Marine Services Ltd at Askeaton, Co Limerick.

Eddie who is fishing from Dingle, Co Kerry is “blown-away” by the expert finish from the Limerick based yard and could not praise enough the professionalism of everybody involved.

Ryan & Roberts is a long established boatyard and renowned for their top quality work and because of this, Eddie Moore feels there was something extra special to the work completed on the ‘Misty Dawn’.

Speaking to Cyril Ryan of Ryan & Roberts, it is obvious that he takes pride in providing a top class service to his customers.

As Cyril explains, “We wanted to bring the boat in its original condition” and so they did.

To start with all the masts and other superstructure were removed before the boat was taken into the yard. There, the hull was totally sanded and sacrificial fiberglass was applied to the port and starboard sides from the shoulder to the aft.

After the application of the fiberglass the hull was completely repainted with Two-pack International paint including the top of the boat.

All the lettering and decals including the fishing numbers were renewed.

The woodwork on the gunnels were completely scraped, sanded and finished with International Woodskin.

The deck was also scraped and sanded. All the deck surfaces

including the wheelhouse floor was finished with a non-slip gel paint.

The wheelhouse has also received an overhaul with electronical equipment rearranged and fitted with a new galley, including a new stainless steel oven and hob. On the outside the wheelhouse was cleaned and finished with a polish-gel.

Along with the new paint job, Tom Hand fitted a new Hondex 7200di with a Simrad Transducer. He also supplied the ‘Misty Dawn’ with all new safety equipment.

Eddie was full of praise for the perfection of the work and especially for Joe Lane and Christopher Moroney.

“One morning when I was down looking at the boat and I was chatting to Joe” says Eddie “when he noticed some brush strokes on the paint he wasn’t happy with. Honestly, I couldn’t see it but Joe insisted that it would be repainted.

“Their attention to detail was immense. They spent eight-hours painting the name on her. They could have done that job in an hour or two but they took their time and if you look at the perfection of the job afterwards you can see why.”

Eddie is currently fishing pots for crabs and lobsters with the 9.9 metre ‘Misty Dawn’. He bought the boat from Geoffrey Chambers in Kilkeel, Co Down in 2005. Previous to that the boat had fished from the Isle of Man.

The ‘Misty Dawn’ was a replacement for Eddie’s previous boat the ‘Noreen Bawn” a 38ft carvel hulled boat built by Patten in Achill, which he fished from 1983 to 2002.
