"What's in your wallet?" So says one of the popular credit card campaigns of recent years. According to people who study such things, 185 million Americans carry three bank-issued credit cards, four retail credit cards, and one debit card. You know what's increasingly not in our wallets? Cash and checks. According to one source, five years ago 80% of spending in the US was cashless. We've been reflecting on giving trends here at Zion. It's not a task that anyone really enjoys - maybe we can call it a necessary evil. It's necessary because, as we said last month, regular financial support to Zion continues to increase, but slowly. Some calculations suggest contributions increased only 3% from 2008 to 2017. So it's necessary that we take a closer look. But it's evil because looking at dollar signs and giving trends can so easily

lead us into sin. After all, the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils (1 Tim 6:10). We don't worship money. We worship Jesus. But it takes money to run a Christian mission. Did you know that the Lutheran church has a “calendar of saints”? Of course we teach that every Christian is a “saint” by virtue of the righteousness of Christ which is given to them in their baptism and which covers all of their sins, just as the Scriptures teach. But we also recognize that there have been Christians throughout the centuries through whom God has richly blessed his people and whose lives have made an enormous impact on the world. One of those saints we remember on April 21 is Anselm of Canterbury. I’ve never written a newsletter article on a saint before, so it may seem odd that I would choose to begin with someone you’ve likely never heard of. Anselm of Canterbury is relatively unknown compared to theologians like Martin Luther or St. Augustine, yet his work continues to influence the life and teaching of the church even today. Anselm was born in 1033 in Italy and became a monk. He lived a quiet life of prayer and contemplation until in 1093

he was made the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leading church position in England at the time. Anselm worked tirelessly to keep the English

king from interfering in the affairs of the church until his death on April 21, 1109.

You may not know Anselm, but you’ve been the beneficiary of his teaching. Anselm’s most famous book is called Cur Deus Homo (Why God Became Man) in which he clearly explained the purpose for Jesus’ death. Anselm demonstrated that Jesus died as a sacrificial payment for our sins, and that his death satisfied God the Father’s wrath over our sin. We call that teaching the “vicarious satisfaction.” In simple terms: Jesus died for our sins so that we don’t have to. Anselm didn’t invent this doctrine. As Lutherans we believe all doctrine is derived from the Scriptures alone, and the Scriptures teach the vicarious satisfaction. Galatians 3:13 says clearly, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree,’” and

2 Corinthians 5:14 reminds us “one died for all.” Anselm didn’t invent this doctrine, but he expressed it so clearly in his writing that his work remains even today the definitive book on this subject. Anselm was also known for his brilliant Christian philosophy. One of the most famous “proofs” for the existence of God is called the ontological proof. It was invented by Anselm of Canterbury. It goes like this:

1. God is the greatest being that can be imagined.

2. A God who exists in reality (which a person can imagine) is greater than a god who is only imagined.

3. Therefore, God exists.

Only the Word of God can create faith in our hearts to believe and trust in salvation, but Anselm knew that philosophical and logical arguments have their place in stopping the mouths of unbelievers so that they might be able to hear the Gospel. Anselm was truly a fascinating churchman. We give thanks to God for his work in teaching the church and preaching Jesus’ death on the cross for

Our Confirmation class has studied and memorized six sections of Luther’s Small Catechism; the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, Confession, and the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and of the Altar. These students have also carefully listened to and taken notes on more than 3 dozen

sermons as they made efforts to grow in their faith. We wish to welcome these individuals into communicant membership of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and Zion Lutheran Church as they are confirmed during the 10:30am service on April 29th.

Our Sunday school is raising money for the Lutheran Heritage Foundation through Sunday, April 8th for, “Cont-inuing What Luther Began,” a mission with the goal of putting a Bible, catechism, or book about Jesus into the hands of children of all languages around the world.

The children should have received a “Money for Missions” (M&M) container to fill with their offerings each week. You can follow the progress by watching the bulletin board in the lower level of the education wing.

There is one Bible added to the bulletin board for every $5 received, as this is the

amount needed to give a book to a child. You can talk to Travis or Wendi Schnabel if you have any questions about this project.

Rev. Adam and Deac. Melissa DeGroot and their son Knox should be getting settled into their new home in New Mexico by the time you are reading this newsletter.

After several months of fundraising to support their national (domestic) mission in Albuquerque, NM, they are ready to begin their work among the people there. Adam and Melissa are tasked with planting a new mission congregation; reaching out to the many military families, indigenous Native Americans, as well as Central and South

American, and Mexican American immigrants. Adam has ties to western South Dakota. You can read their full Synod bio online at www.LCMS.org/degroot Zion is helping to support the DeGroots in their mission. Your offerings to Zion help the DeGroots to share the Gospel in New Mexico!

The Voters of Zion decided on March 18th to purchase the large garage across the alley that is adjacent to/part of the three lots we already own. Some funds were already available to cover a portion of the purchase, the rest,

however, will need to be raised.

Our Church

Council will be starting a

campaign to raise those funds. Until details of that campaign can be discussed & announced,

members that are willing to give to the project may certainly do so. Be sure to mark contributions with the designation "Garage Fund". Thank you! Davyd Titze, Zion President

The Vocation of Singleness

A Weekend Singles Retreat

April 27-28, 2018

Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church and School 7308 Wedgewood Drive Black Hawk SD 57718

Did you know that being single is a God-given vocation? The world and our sinful flesh want us to see and live our singleness apart from God's good and gracious will. What does God have to say about singleness? What does it mean to be single in the church? How do we live out our vocation as a single person? These are all questions that we will seek to answer during our retreat. This uplifting retreat is open to all single individuals—single, divorced, or widowed.
