You can tune in (on air) at 89.3FM Denver; 89.7FM Breckenridge; and 88.5 FM Vail but don’t stop there……you can tune in via app, streaming etc., go to http://kuvo.org/ways-listen to find out more.

Since 1985, KUVO – an independent, public radio station – has provided a rare blend of music and news. We broadcast the very best in jazz, Latin jazz and blues in addition to seventeen locally produced, culturally diverse programs.

Our mission is to provide distinctive music, news and informational programming reflecting the values and cultural diversity of our listener community. Thanks to the free KUVO app and the ability to stream the station live, KUVO has a worldwide listener community!

We frequently feature live broadcasts of national touring artists as well as local musicians and students from our Phyllis A Greer Performance Studio, and broadcast remotely from concerts, festivals and community events.

Leading the way on “Virtual Volunteering” --- volunteer anytime from anyplace! RMPBS will test-drive a “virtual volunteering” experiment by developing a simple social media toolkit for volunteers to promote the next incredible nationwide PBS initiative: The Great American Read. Volunteers will use their community, business and personal connections to promote this initiative. And, this initiative is all about reading and books and conversation. Stay tuned……

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part television and online series designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us. The series will engage audiences with a list of 100 diverse books. Audiences are encouraged to read the books, vote from the list of 100, and share their personal connections to the titles.

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ premieres Tuesday, May 22 at 8/7c on PBS stations with a launch special, kicking off a summer of reading and voting. Then in the fall, seven new episodes of the series will air as the quest to find America’s most beloved book moves into high gear. Episodes from the series will feature appearances by celebrities, athletes, experts, authors, and everyday Americans advocating for their favorite book. http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/home/

For now, we are asking you to donate a book! To help promote the Great American Read, RMPBS will be installing Little Free Libraries around the state. Help us fill these libraries by donating a book to one of our offices in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Durango! Thank you for helping us support lifelong literacy and learning!

TIDBITS OF HISTORY | ROCKY MOUNTAIN PUBLIC MEDIA

by Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived Memories (SAM)

Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) serves the past, present, and future of Rocky

Mountain Public Media by assuring that the history of the station and its

importance to the Colorado community will survive for generations to come.

Established in 2000, SAM is a volunteer-driven project preserving the history of

Rocky Mountain PBS. To learn more about the station’s history and how you can

volunteer or donate items to the archives, please contact Volunteer Coordinator,

SUSAN BARBER at [email protected].

For 44 years, April meant it was time for the annual Channel Six televised AUCTION. From

1966-2009, the Rocky Mountain PBS televised Auctions were major annual spring community

events raising millions of dollars thanks to the generous donations of businesses and artists

throughout Colorado and beyond. The donations were sold “live” on the air as viewers eagerly

watched TV submitting their bids on items as they appeared on the air. Year-round, hundreds

of volunteers worked with RMPBS staff to prepare for the televised auction.

Did you know that between 1979-2002, TWENTY-ONE HOMES were donated and sold to

benefit Rocky Mountain PBS? It’s true! Funds raised from the sale of each of the auction

Page 7: April 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Monthpbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod/filer...but don't sign out, the computer only gives you credit for 3 hours. Not only do you

homes ranged from $72,000 up to $285,000. Proceeds for the sales of the homes helped

purchase evening and weekend programming.

The first Auction home was donated to the 14th annual KRMA-

TV Channel Six Auction in 1979 by US Home. The inaugural

home, known as a “Sun Home,” was located in Aurora at 3557

S. Waco Way and was the largest valued item ever donated to

KRMA’s public television auction valued at $110,000.

The volunteers on the Auction “House Committee” organized a

great deal of the project working very closely with donors to

oversee the home’s construction. Most often, the land was also

donated along with the construction costs of hundreds of

subcontractors donating their time, materials and services.

Can you imagine the amount of organization it took to

coordinate the donations from over 100 subcontractors and suppliers that generously donated

doors, roofs, countertops, appliances, carpet, excavation, electric layouts, carpentry, brick, paint

and so much more! It was truly a remarkable community endeavor that was admired by public

broadcasting stations across the country.

Promoting the house was another element of

auction that had volunteers and staff working

jointly to procure free publicity from a variety of

resources. Denver’s commercial stations (radio

and TV) frequently donated FREE on-air spots

and live interviews to promote the sale of the

auction homes.

Prior to broadcasting the daily auction, invitation-

only “House Parties” were hosted at the auction

homes allowing realtors, house donors,

subcontractors and suppliers to be feted by

Rocky Mountain PBS. In addition, multi-day

community open houses were hosted welcoming the community to view the homes and

consider submitting a bid.

First Channel Six Auction Home, 1979

Page 8: April 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Monthpbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod/filer...but don't sign out, the computer only gives you credit for 3 hours. Not only do you

“Open Houses” to market the annual Auction House attracted 100’s of guests that were enticed

by various entertainment venues for all ages. The Channel Six mascot, Mrs. Bird, was a hugely

popular attraction at open houses along with musicians, popcorn machines, refreshments,

bounce houses, clowns, face painters and many more generous vendors that also donated their

time and talents!

Methods of bidding for the auction homes varied. For the very first auction home in 1979,

bidders were asked to pick up a bid sheet at the auction home or at the Channel Six studios on

Glenarm -- no internet or email was available back then, of course. Bidders could submit a

written bid prior to the televised auction. During the weeklong televised auction, a special

auction phone number was available allowing bidders to ask questions or place their bids on the

Auction House throughout the 1979 auction week.

The sale of some of the homes was quite a

fanfare! Several homes were actually celebrated

and sold on the air with the lucky bidders being

treated to a “live” fanfare in the studio. The studio

came alive when the highest bidder of the 1979

home was introduced!! It was very exciting.

As you can imagine, the entire process of

procuring, building, decorating, marketing and

selling Auction homes was a huge endeavor. As a

result of the combined efforts of the staff and a

vast volunteer corps, millions of dollars were

raised over the years to benefit Rocky Mountain Public Media.
