these are exciting times, we added a new signal/raft up boat for the Marina and we have a new activities Director.
We have added to our fleet, a 24-foot aqua patio. this boat will have multiple uses, mainly a Signal Boat that will be command central for all races and regattas. it will also be used for all raft ups and for the Jr sailing program. We will be making some adjustments and are excited to use it.
We have welcomed a new activities Director to the team, Jennifer Milwee. She has been in the Charlotte area for a little over a year. She is happily married with a 2-month-old baby boy. When she is not at work she spends time with her family and enjoys watching football. She is also a BiG naSCar fan and loves anything Disney.
She has been in the hospitality industry since 2008, where she started out as a Youth program Coordinator at a country club. Jennifer is very excited to be the new activities Director and is looking forward to her time spent with the peninsula Yacht Club family!
We have many things planned this year and i hope you will take advantage of the club this spring. if you have any questions regarding any of the activities or would like to make suggestions, please stop by to see me. thank you for your support over the long cold winter and we look forward to serving you this season.
Sincerely,Bruce Furman, CCM

What better way to start off the season than knowing your vessel is equipped with everything required for safe boating, for you and your family! A vessel safety check will help get you started! VSC’s are free and a good way to start off the season right. These can be scheduled and conducted through the Lake Norman Power Squadron | Louis Schwartz 704-737-8742 or lschwartz919@msn .com or the Coast Guard Auxiliary | Flotilla 26-01 | 704-663-3333
a Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain Safety equipment required by State and the Federal regulations. the Vessel examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the United States power Squadrons. they will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater. this is not boarding or a law enforcement issue. no citations will be given as a result of this encounter. We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that pass will be able to display the distinctive VSC decal. this does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a positive encounter. Many insurance companies offer additional insurance discounts as a result of passing a Vessel Safety Check. Lake norman Sail and power Squadron

It’s spring and the sailing activities on Lake Norman are heating up.
The first race of the PYC Fellowship Series is scheduled for April 8th and the second race is April 29th. This informal Sunday afternoon series is for everyone who sails; hardcore racer, beginning racer and everyone in between. If you have a sailboat you should consider joining us. Here are a few reasons why: • Short format (1.5 hour max) race with a finish often in the harbor • Casual racing since there is no hardware or glory to be had (just bragging rights) • Great way to try racing without the pressure of a big regatta • Get your friends to crew with you and try racing • Socialize with fellow sailors at PYC after the race (or don’t if you wish) • Post race discussion of tactics and learning points • Tune your skills for the Peninsula Cup in the Fall • See the Notice of Race: www.regattanetwork.com/event/16430 for more details and the link to register.
tHe sailinG sCene Jim Hill, Sail Fleet Captain
Also, the Outrigger Yacht Club Wednesday Night Series will begin on April 18th. Check out the changes in format for this Series in the Notice of Race, and register for the Series at: www.regattanetwork.com/event/15866.
The Lake Norman Hospice Regatta will be held at Lake Norman Yacht Club on April 21st and 22nd. Register for this Regatta at: www.regattanetwork.com/event/16223.
The Lake Norman Keelboat Council (LNKC) Icicle Series was conducted in January and February. Six races were completed with 19 boats competing in the series. Congratulations to PYC members Brian O’Malley on ‘Blue’ and Don Trask on ‘Smokin’ J’ for finishing first and second in the series.
high School SailingThe Hough/PYC Sailing Club, hosted by The PYC, participated in a SAISA (South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Assoc.) points regatta on February 24th in Charleston. There were 21 total boats at the Regatta. Because we have three 8th graders, we competed as a non-points JV team. Battling 15+ knots sustained winds and very challenging conditions; they placed 4th out of the 5 JV teams present. Both of our ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams were able to sail 8 races. They gained valuable high wind experience and had a lot of fun. By the time you read this, the team will have competed in the Lake Norman Open on March 17th and will be looking at regatta options for the summer. Spring is an exciting time for the Club and for the Fleet Committee as we kick off all of the “on the water” activities and events for our Yacht Club. our first “raft Up” is May 5th with a Cinco de Mayo theme. then is the always popular (free) pancake Breakfast/pool opening event on May 26th. it is followed the next day by the Fleet Commissioning and Shrimp Fest. as membership representatives, your Fleet Committee is fervently focused
on capitalizing on our superb marina location and getting all members involved in activities that celebrate the ”Lake Life.” So we challenge all of you to use the kayaks, paddleboats, sail boat and other great ways pYC provides for you to get out “on the water.” the Fleet Committee provides ways for non-boat owners to enjoy the “raft Ups”, poker run and sailing events. these ways will all be featured in the Watch and happening at the Club email blasts. please come have fun with us!
