April 2019
Principal’s Message
Welcome to April! This school year is moving very
quickly and it is hard to believe we are heading
into the final three months of the school year. As
we move into April, I want to thank parents and
guardians for their tremendous support for our
Parent-Teacher Conferences on March 25th and
27th. It was exciting to see many parents and
guardians along with their children attend Parent-
Teacher Conferences. I want to thank the parents
and guardians for their tremendous support of their
children and for their child’s teachers. Thank You!
I also want to thank the parents, guardians and
students for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair
during the last week of March. The book fair was
very successful and the money raised from the
book fair is reinvested into the library to purchase
more books for the students. I also want to thank
and congratulate the students who participated in
the O.M. Irwin Talent Show on March 28th. The
student performers were very impressive and they
did a terrific job in performing for their peers. In
closing, I wish all members of our school
community a terrific month of April.

ROBB NASH PROJECT
The Robb Nash Project is coming to Swift Current and Irwin grades 6 – 8 students will get to see his dynamic presentation on April 17, 2019.
Robb Nash is becoming internationally known for leaving a successful music career to share his incredible story with thousands of young people.
Robb was the victim of a serious auto accident, a head on collision with a semi-truck. He was found with a fractured skull and pronounced dead by first responders. But by the time the ambulance had arrived at the scene to take his body to the hospital, Robb’s pulse had miraculously returned. After a difficult recovery, and despite significant physical and emotional scars, Robb was left with a new outlook on life.
He started a band as a way to leverage the power of music to share his philosophy, and soon had songs in the Canadian Top 10. Robb saw musical success as a platform from which to influence and motivate young people. He put aside performing to large audiences, and began speaking to youth in their schools across the country, playing his songs and sharing their meaning with his young audiences.
Robb is a Canadian recording artist who tours the country and speaks to students about hope and purpose. He combines humor, song and story-telling to communicate with students about the value of life and self-worth. In his presentations, he covers topics such as bullying, drugs/alcohol misuse, making good choices, depression and suicide, self-respect and respecting others. His main message to students is to make every day count. Robb has spoken to over 1 million students, and visits cities all across Canada each school year with a profound impact. It is common for students to find a new sense of hope and purpose in their lives after experiencing a Robb Nash presentation.
“Some say you have to hit rock bottom to learn life's most important lessons. I disagree. On this tour we've seen so many young people experience breakthroughs when they hear the tragic and inspiring stories of others. We help people discover their gifts, rather than focus on their failings. We help them to learn not just to survive, but to lead a life of significance. I don't want others to have to go through a near death experience like I did.... before they learn to live!”
Thank you to the following people who support our O.M. Irwin students:
1. SaskTel Pioneers Club for their $300 donation to be put towards purchasing books for our school library
2. Our school’s Basketball Coaches
3. The community’s basketball officials that helped officiate all of our teams’ games this season.
4. Ethan Regnier and Ethan O’Rourke for their support of the Broncos I-Read Program.

April is National Oral Health Month
A Message from Your School Dental Team
Let’s Remember To Celebrate Our Smiles
Everyone deserves a healthy happy smile. To prevent common oral health problems like cavities and gum disease the solution is so simple that it seems hard to believe that many of us still struggle with these issues, but we do. Why? There may be a few answers, but the number one answer most often is not very complicated and may just mean one or two slight changes to our daily routine.
If we took just a few minutes each day to take part in a simple oral hygiene plan or tweak a few things we are doing, we would have a much better chance of enjoying good oral health. It could be as simple as 1 2 3 - A B C
1 - Brush twice a day, for the right amount of time. The usual recommendation is 2 minutes (with help from an adult) if you are a child and 3 minutes if you are an adolescent or adult.
2 - Floss once a day
3 - Routine dental visits starting as early as 1 year old.
A - Always take the opportunity to use fluoride products. Fluoride strengthens teeth and makes it much harder for cavities to develop. It also remineralizes enamel that is starting to decay making the tooth strong and healthy again. It is a safe effective way to help avoid costly cavities.
B - Be sure to brush your child’s teeth until they are capable of doing this for themselves. Let them go first and then you finish the job. This is usually needed until around 8 or 9 years old. After that continue checking in and supervise from time to time to be sure that a thorough job is being done.
C - Consider snacking on healthy alternatives at least most of the time. Sugary and starchy foods are better “sometimes” snacks than “all the time” snacks.
A Smile is something everyone can afford to give away. The more smiles you give the better both you and the receiver feel.

Chinook Board of Education - Trustee Profile: TIM RAMAGE
Tim Ramage is a Trustee for Subdivision 8 which includes all Swift Current schools: Fairview, Central, Irwin, École Centennial, CAMPS, Maverick and SCCHS. Tim has been a Trustee for nearly 15 years, starting with the legacy Swift Current Division 94.
1. Why did you become a trustee? I became a trustee because I honestly desire that all children and youth have the opportunity to learn and grow in an educational environment that enables them to reach their fullest potential with a strong support base.
2. What do you feel you bring to the Board table? I have worked much with children and youth within our community in varying capacities: operated an Open Custody Young Offender Home for Sask. Justice, youth pastor, Social Services Contract Mentor, Southwest Homes. As a result of these experiences as well as taking courses relative to working with youth who struggle with esteem and addiction issues, I believe children and youth need individual help and support.
3. What kinds of things does a board of education do? The Board of Education works cooperatively with the Minister of Education, with the goal of enabling our School Division to deliver the services necessary to fulfill the needs of our students.
4. What is your most memorable school event or activity you have been a part of? I’ve enjoyed many memorable moments as a Board Trustee, mainly being able to attend the Grand Re-opening of Maverick School, as well as our new Ecole Centennial School. However, what I have enjoyed most is being able to visit the schools in our division on both a formal and informal basis, and seeing how staff and students have taken the initiative to develop their school’s “personality”.
5. What do you feel is one of the most important issues facing the Education sector today? I feel the most important issue facing the education sector today is the ongoing need for funding to deliver the educational programming that is needed to meet the needs of both teachers and students.
6. What is your most heart-warming and/or funniest moment in your time as a trustee? The most heartwarming moments I have experienced in my time as a Trustee is when students from various schools attend Board Meetings and present their outstanding accomplishments and projects that they have been working on within their schools.
7. What do you want people to know about being a trustee? It is my desire that teachers, staff, parents, and students know that as trustees we are approachable, and are working on their behalf to help them educate and mentor the children who are under their care.
8. What are you looking forward to in regards to the future of the Education sector? As in the present, I am looking forward to and hoping that the number of students committing to graduate will continue to rise, and that the children who struggle will continue to receive the help they need from the new initiatives that have been implemented recently (eg. Math and ELA Interventions).

In Motion Commotion News By: Val Choo-Foo, City of Swift Current In Motion Coordinator
Spring is here!! Now it’s time to get outside and be physically active by going
for walks, biking, roller-blading, playing soccer, ball, basketball or football.
Whether children and adults are registered in structured activities or not, there
are many opportunities to be In Motion. Did you know that 65% of
Saskatchewan parents with 5-17 year olds report that parks and playgrounds
are within half a kilometer of their home? And this is definitely true for Swift
Current! We have 20 parks and playgrounds as well as tennis courts, a
skateboard park, horseshoe pits, soccer fields, and basketball courts. We are
also so fortunate to have over 20 kilometers of Chinook Parkway alongside the
Swift Current Creek. There are so many fun spring activities to participate in, so stay active and have fun!
