Duns Scotus,

Pray for Us.

Shamrock Nation Steps Up to Help When blizzard conditions and flood waters started ravaging

Nebraska Thurs., March 14, destroying towns, fields and road-ways, forever altering its landscape, the Shamrock Nation an-swered the call for help in a big way.

By the following Tuesday afternoon, the hallway near the east doors was covered with countless bottles of drinking water, bleach, hand sanitizer, dish soap and spray cleaner, boxes, bags and packages of paper towels, trash bags, gloves, masks, pump sprayers, fans and so much more.

Sophomore Ben Merrill (above) and other students made quick work of loading the Scotus Band trailer for the first deliv-ery to a center in North Bend.

To date, the trailer and three car loads have been delivered to North Bend for use by area flood victims.

Time and muscle also have been donated. Sebastien Fritz, a Scotus sopho-

more (left), joined Scotus juniors Jared Beaver (center) and Cole Demuth (right) in giving their time on a Saturday to help another Sco-tus family clear debris from their flooded home. The boys met at Godfather’s restaurant and were shuttled to as near the house as possible. As the road was washed, out, these young men walked a distance to their final destination.

Mobile Bidding Now at Gala This year's Gala will feature mobile bidding for all of

the Silent and Super Silent auction items. NOTE: Grand auction items will use the traditional bid number method.

Scotus has engaged QTEGO, a premium mobile bidding provider, to make the experience easy and fun. Guests can bid using cell phones or iPads. There will be several helpers available if bidding assistance is needed. To ensure fast and secure connections, the signal power in the school will be boosted.

Electronic bidding is simple and interactive. Gala guests will be able to checkout electronically as invoices will be sent to the winning bidders’ devices.

Not attending Gala, but want to bid? Enter bids from home or work.

Bidders can register to bid and scan through all of the auction items about 10 days before Gala on-line at qtego.net/qlink/scotuscc.

CSF a Good Investment The 2018-19 school year marks the 17th year that

the Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha has provided tuition assistance to students in our Columbus Catholic schools.

The beauty of the program is that every dollar raised in Columbus is matched by nearly $2 and returned in the form of scholarships. Please consider donating, mak-ing checks payable to the Children’s Scholarship Fund.

Donations may be tax deductible as CSF is a desig-nated 501 (c) 3. Donations may be dropped off at Scotus or any of the three Catholic parish offices.

Gala Fundraiser to help STEAM Each year, Gala supporters are asked to consider

funding a special capital improvement for the school. This year, funds raised will support the purchase of a

The Scotus STEAM Lab could be taken to each of the Columbus Catholic grade schools at various times throughout the year to provide a resource for their cur-riculum and stimulate the creative thought processes fostered by the STEAM program.

Senior High Guidance 2019/2020 student class registrations are in and students will receive a hard copy of their schedule and be given

the opportunity to do drop/add. Watch announcements for dates. The new course descriptions and graduation requirements are posted on Scotus’ home page,

www.scotuscc.org; click on Academics/Course Descriptions. Remember, it is the student’s and parent’s responsibility to be aware of and meet all graduation requirements. A copy of a student’s graduation progress is available upon request.

Class of 2019 Honor’s Night is Wed., May 1, 7 PM, in the Dowd Activity Center. The Endowed scholarships will be presented to recipients in the Media Center at 6:30 PM. Graduation Mass is Wed., May 8, 10:10 AM, in the Dowd Activity Center; this is the equivalent of a Baccalaureate and all parents and families are invited. Graduation is Sun., May 12, 1:30 PM, in the Dowd Activity Center. This time of year can become hectic, so take time to enjoy the special days that are ahead.

Nathan Schumacher and Abbie Zoucha were named Student of the Month by the Elks and the Rotary Club, re-spectively.

Many seniors have received or will be receiving your SAR (Student Aid Reports) from the colleges you have applied to. Be sure to compare awards by calculating the gift aid, the loan requirements and the out-of-pocket expenses for each col-lege. After you have decided which school is your best fit, return your award letter to the respective college’s Financial Aid Office. If you have not already done so, be sure to get your housing deposits made, to get your next year residency requests in.

Students completing their junior or senior year are eligible to apply for the CCC Summer Scholarship. An ACT or an already-scored Accuplacer is required. The deadline is April 15, so don’t delay.

Register for the ACT on June 8 by Fri., May 3, to avoid the late fee. Late registration with an additional fee ends May 20. The SAT will be given May 4 and June 1. Registration dates are April 5 and May 3, respectively. Tests will be offered again in the fall.

Junior High Guidance Junior High registrations have been compiled by Mrs. Weir. NOTE: Band students ONLY have the option to par-

ticipate in Vocal Music or choose a study hall for one semester opposite PE class. Mrs. Cox sent Vocal Music opt-out forms home with students. Signed forms stating students will not be participating in both Band and Vocal need to be returned soon. Letters generated though the math department and administration will be mailed to parents regarding 8th-grade math placement recommendations.

Incoming 7th-Grade Student Orientation for all three Catholic 6th graders planning to attend Scotus in the fall of 2019 Mon., April 1. Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria and visit current 7th-grade classes, getting a feel for how classes move room to room on a regular school day. Student lunches are $3.15. Parents of St. Anthony’s and St. Isidore’s Schools should pick there students up at Scotus at 3:15 PM; St. Bon’s students will walk back to school with their teachers.

Incoming 7th-Grade Parent Orientation also is Mon., April 1, 7 PM, in the Scotus Little Theater. School policies and dress code will be discussed. There will be a tour of the building and an opportunity to ask questions.

New Student Physicals and Immunization Records Due by 7/22/19 All current 6th-graders are required by law to have a complete physical before entering the 7th grade, even if they are

not participating in a sport. The form for this physical was included in the registration packet and MUST be taken to the appointment to be com-

pleted by the physician. Additional forms are available in the Scotus Central Office and on the Scotus website, scotuscc.org. NOTE: Physicals CANNOT be completed before May 1 for the 2019-2020 school year.

Physical forms must be returned to the Scotus Central Office by Mon., July 22, 2019. If you are unable to get your student’s physical done before the due date, please contact the Scotus Central Office at 402-564-7165 with the date of the physical.

Regarding immunizations, all incoming 7th-graders and new students from other school districts are required to have all Nebraska-mandated immunizations up-to-date. Immunizations are:

3 doses of Dtap, DTP, DT or TD vaccine 3 doses of Polio vaccine 2 doses of MMR or MMRV vaccine 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine 2 doses of MMRV (chicken pox) given on or after 12 month of age. If your child has already had chicken pox, you

More Than$3,880 Netted in Hoops for Heart Campaign

More than 100 students Scotus Junior High students raised $3,880.50 in February, Heart Health Month, for the American Heart Association.

A “Hoops for Heart Day” was held for 123 Scotus Junior High students in PE classes and included a variety of fun basketball activities and contests. Of those 123 students, 106 students did a great job voluntarily raising donations, which resulted in a new record amount raised for this event at Scotus.

Curriculum for the junior high physical ed-ucation classes directly correlated with the event.

Hoops for Heart is a national program that funds critical heart disease and stroke research and education. Hoops for Heart is a great way to teach students about heart health and com-munity service.

Top-fundraisers for this event were Ella Nahorny, $225; Makenna Barels, $165; Anna Lovell and Max Lancaster, $150 each; Ashlee Leffers and Kaden Backman, $125 each; Logan Erickson, $120; Mary Faltys, $105; and Matthew Gokie, Haden Brabec, Neve Pavlik and Alyssa Hiemer, $100 each.

Thank you to all of our students and to those of you who so generously supported the American Heart Association

Statistics Our Kids Live With: Many studies show that one-third of American chil-

dren are obese.

Nearly half of our American youth age 12-21 are not vigorously active on a regular basis.

Physical inactivity declines dramatically during ado-lescence.

A family member exposes about 43 percent of chil-dren every day to second-hand smoke.

Smoking has increased among young Americans. In this country, about 3,000 young people take up smoking every day.

Of the youths that begin smoking before the age of 20, there is evidence that these kids have the highest incidence and earliest onset of both coronary heart disease and hypertension.
