Letters & Notices

Are you the vile and disgusting dog owner who doesn’t pick up after their dog. In this photo there are 3 piles of poo – which appear to be from the same large dog. A fourth pile had already been stepped in by some unfortunate person. I picked these

up and already there is more in the same sort of spots – same dog too by the look of it.

I have walked dogs in this village for 36 years and have never seen such an amount of blatant disregard for other people and the law with regard to dog poo. Probably at least 95% of dog owners pick up and bin so what on earth is wrong with those of

you who don’t. The picture shows that the bin is only about 10 yards away. If you can walk your dog to the field, you must be able to walk to the bin.

If you are unsure about where you can let your dogs mess freely this is a good rule to follow:- If you don’t personally own the title deeds for the land on which your dog is messing you should pick up and bin it. Could I encourage all the other responsible dog owners to keep their phones at the ready to photograph anyone (and their dog) who is not picking up so we can publish to name and shame the culprits. Obviously when you think you have spotted someone do check before sending in your picture that the dog was not just having a wee – even some male dogs will squat for that. Denise (dog owner but disgusted with the few who don't pick up).

We would like to thank our neighbours, both past and present and our friends for all the wonderful cards, gifts and well wishes we’ve received following our move from Headlands all the way to Honey Hill. We have been overwhelmed. What an amazing community we live in. Thank you again. Ray and Niki Whitby

Spectrum – Rector’s letter for April 2020 Hello! How are you doing? Since I last wrote to you, sooooooo much has happened. I am now Rector instead of Priest-In-Charge (a legal difference, it is still “me”), coronavirus arrived, followed by the cancellation of meetings, gatherings, clubs and groups, then the suspension of all pubic services of worship and the closure of schools. By the time you read this letter, of course, that may have all changed but just at the moment, this is what we know. Although the Parish Church is not holding services at the moment, the church is open during daylight hours for private prayer and quiet thought for anyone who wishes to do so. We are thinking about new ways of helping our community here in Fenstanton. If we can help you, then please let us know. We are working with others, the Parish Council for example, to make sure that anyone who is isolating themselves, or their household, can receive support or help. Our aim is to endeavour to make sure that everyone who needs support in some way, is just a phone call away. Our “Care for one another” flier has more information and contact details. It was with sadness that I postponed the Fenstanton Community Café meeting, especially having received such an enthusiastic response. PLEASE let us keep the momentum going. Stay in touch so I can make a list of enquirers, add your details to my list of possible volunteers, let me know your thoughts about how often the café should meet and on which day or time. I would like to set up a Facebook Group and I will get that done as soon as I can. But if Facebook is not your thing and you can drop me a note through the Vicarage letterbox (virus and self-isolation permitting) or an email to [email protected] then please do. We are thinking creatively and imaginatively about ways to stay in touch. So do look at our website or Facebook page or look out for a newsletter from us. I would like to have a community event where we can celebrate all the positive things we have been doing. Maybe you will have some poetry, or you used the time to write that book or those memoirs you hadn’t got around to yet. Perhaps you created a masterpiece a la Monet or Van Gogh. Or you knitted, embroidered or did some sewing. What photos did you take, which books did you read, what music did you listen to? What special meals did you cook, using the ingredients you found in your cupboard! Just how many cupboards did you clear out, how many times did you mow the grass? You get the idea. Start making a note now so that when we do go ahead with our community event, you know you will be able to provide something to celebrate or to add some humour. In closing, I would have been inviting you to join us for our Easter services. Instead I invite you to be part of the Easter Acclamation, with these words for Easter Sunday morning, in your homes: Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. God bless, and please be assured of my prayers for you, the street where you live, your family, friends and neighbours. Rev Rosie

Fenstanton Parish Church - April

As you may already be aware, in the light of latest Government advice to cease public gatherings, the guidance from the Church of England is that our usual pattern of Sunday services and other mid-week gatherings must be put on hold immediately. This means that no public services of worship on Sundays or weekdays can take place. Our Parish Church, St Peter & St Paul, Fenstanton, will be open as usual during daylight hours for private prayer and quiet thought, for anyone who wishes to do so. Everyone is welcome to visit, but please take care for your own safety as we are unable to ensure that surfaces, door handles etc are free from viruses or other contamination, neither can we offer hand cleansers at present. Please be assured we are finding new ways of “being the church” at this difficult time and we are thinking of alternative ways that we can help each other to stay in touch with one another. If you would like to receive a weekly email, or need help and/or support in other ways then please contact: Rev Rosie 01480 467393 email: [email protected] Or Churchwarden: Philip Blunt 01480 461751 Or Churchwarden: Ian Hucklesby 01480 465211 Or PCC Secretary Ian McKellar [email protected] We plan to produce some church resources as well as some community support to be available for anyone. We will share news on: Fen Drayton with Fenstanton Parish Churches Facebook page and www.fenstantonparishchurch.org.uk Please be assured of our prayers for you, the street where you live, your neighbours, family and friends.

Contact information: For Fen Drayton with Fenstanton: We look forward to welcoming you at any of our services. All enquiries regarding baptisms (christenings) and weddings (including Banns of Marriage) should be made in the first instance to our Rector Revd Rosie Tallowin, 01480 467393. Fenstanton and Rationing in WW2: Just when I thought that I had finished with WW2 another essay came to mind! John Deeks When the Second World War began in September

1939, petrol was the first commodity to be rationed. On

the 8th January 1940, bacon, butter and sugar

were rationed. Meat, tea, jam, biscuits, breakfast

cereals, cheese, eggs, lard, milk, canned and dried

fruit were rationed subsequently but not all at once.

Rationing was a means of ensuring the fair distribution

of food and commodities when they were scarce.

From May 1940 World War Two really got started and the residents of Fenstanton began digging up their gardens and planting vegetables, fruit and salads. The three High Street grocery stores had earlier stockpiled food items and the two village butcher’s shops were able to supply meats from local farms. Everyone expected the war to be over in a year, so they were not concerned about the long term supply of food. In 1941 onwards clothes were rationed and a year later so were soap, sugar, tea, rice etc. Although things started to be tight in 1941, being in the heart of farming country Fenstanton people never went without the basics of life. Most villagers benefited from the proximity of nearby farms for their milk, eggs, butter, and vegetables. Meat was another matter as the meat supply was strictly controlled by the Ministry of Food who had an inspector in each region whose task it was to ensure that all meat went through the rationing system. But with the proximity of the fens with its wild life such as rabbits, game birds, and fish, locals were never seriously short of meat. The men will go out into the fens to trap and shoot for the pot. Shotguns were plentiful in the village and most men were never without their shotgun. Our village Ministry of Supply food officer obviously took his work very seriously as a local farmer was sent to prison for 4-months for killing a bullock without the food officer’s permission! Then in 1942 things changed for the better. The USA joined in the war and we started to see convoys of trucks filled with US soldiers and airmen driving through the village. Then shortly after we had some of their officers billeted in the village. They were friendly and generous so at last there was no shortage of sugar, tea, coffee, sweets and rice. Mind you, it was suspected that some of the village ladies were a little too friendly with them!

Page 23: April 2020 Dear all. · Fenst. Baby & Toddler Group 01480830658 Swavesey VC 01954230366 Hilton Day Nursery Hilton 01767688715 Hilton Baby & Toddler Group 07749682229 If you run a

People who were alive in that period have said that it was funny

to see the local children gather at the side of the High Street

and as a convoy passed by they would shout out to the

GIs for sweets and gum. The children thoroughly enjoy the

game and the sweets.

Then in early 1944 the Australian army set up camp in the

village and these also were found to be very friendly. They

were here until they departed for D day in June 1944.They

would pass large tins of fruit to the children whose mothers

shared them around the village.

So, in all, rationing appears not to have been a major problem in Fenstanton.

Mind you, it was a different story after 1945 when many of the American troops

went home. The village children’s sweet supply was cut off and it was back to the

basic ration plus the few extra that they could scrounge.

The village children and those adults with a sweet-tooth were overjoyed on the

3rd

February 1953 when the rationing of sweets ended in Britain. Chocolate and

sweets had been rationed for over 10 years, only 12oz a month was permitted to

be purchased until the rationing was abolish.

Fourteen years of food rationing in Britain ended at midnight on 4 July 1954,

when the final restrictions on the sale and purchase of meat and bacon were lift-

Fenstanton Friendship Club We send our love and support to the family of Rhona Bailey who passed away recently. We have missed her since she left to live in Girton. She was such a sweet lady and a pleasure to spend time with. She will be remembered with affection.

To MOLLIE GILDERSLEVE. We hope you enjoy your 100th birthday although celebrations have been put on hold. Congratulations We appreciate all that you have done, and still do, by being a member of the club. Thank you.

26th February Stepping in at the last moment we were entertained by, "The Rocking Ukulele 's". Very upbeat, we enjoyed the afternoon very much and will invite them back late 11th March We held our AGM and discussed what we had done last year and our future plans. This was followed by a quiz (all about body parts!!!) and then 3 games of Bingo. We left hoping to meet on 25th March but are now faced with three months suspension of the club meetings. This is very sad, but we must all pull together to combat the spread of this virus. Please keep in touch with each other and let me know of any needs you may have. Take care, keep well and be active as much as is possible. With love

Fenstanton Community Hub

The Trustees of Fenstanton Village Hall were delighted to welcome to our AGM 32 Fenstanton residents to join the eight Trustees present and we thank them all for their attendance. It made for a much more representative meeting and we hope we were able to answer everyone’s questions fully about our activities over the past year including our continuing negotiations with Morris Homes over the handover of allocated land under the S106 agreement whereby they were given planning permission for their development. Our latest plans for the hall were on display. We asked everyone to vote on what we would call the new building, Fenstanton Village Hall or Fenstanton Community Hub, and the outcome was for Fenstanton Community Hub by 27 votes to 11 with 2 abstentions. We will, however, continue to be registered with the Charity Commission as Fenstanton Village Hall Trust. I have given a year’s notice of my intention to stand down as Chair of Trustees and so we are now looking for my replacement within the village – the sooner someone comes forward the more hand-over time there will be! Our Knowledge Based Music curriculum is progressive, inclusive, broad, rich and ensures that all our children will experience a change in their long-term memory through remembering and learning. Since becoming subject leaders for Music at the beginning of this academic year, we have made many changes, thanks in part to our Knowledge based Curriculum which builds on knowledge taught from Early Years right through to year 6. We have introduced instrument lessons for every child, either Djembe drums or Recorders. We have the opportunity to use our wonderful, revamped music room, for our peripatetic music lessons which is now a pleasure to use. We have introduced the children to many composers, past and present and are teaching them the Interrelated Dimensions of Music- pitch, dynamics, rhythm, tempo, timbre, pulse, structure, texture and notation. This year is the 250

th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth and our Year

6 children have been lucky enough to hear The Athena Ensemble perform his Septet Opus 20. We are planning a music festival in the summer term and would love to hear from any parishioners who play instruments and feel confident enough to come along and show us what you can do. It will be a celebration of a year’s hard work and hopefully be a joyous, (dry?) day. If you would like to get involved please contact the school office and they will put you in touch with one of us. The County Chairman of the Royal British Legion, Mr Alan Scott, has

asked us to publicise his following statement. “The Royal British Legion is the leading charity for the welfare of serving and former members of the UK Armed Services and their dependants. The St Ives branch of the Legion is here to help members of the service family, whatever their needs. You can contact us at our monthly Pop-In centre in the St. Ives public Library, from 11.00 to 13.00hrs on the third Monday of every month. If you are, or know of, a service veteran who might need our help, please pop in and see us Alternatively, you can call our contact centre on 0808 802 8080. Calls are free from most landlines and there will be someone to talk to you 7 days a week from 0800 to 20.00 hrs. Finally, you

can email us at [email protected] We'd love to hear from you.” As you know, we have provided this information in previous issues of Spectrum but Chairman Scott's message at this time of serious national crisis is a correct and timely reminder for us all to be aware of difficulties and misfortunes of others around us and to act if we can. Clearly, all routine monthly meetings and events of the St Ives branches of the Legion and Women's section are cancelled until further notice, but never our support which is needed now more than ever. Keep well and be optimistic. As always, our numbers are:- Margaret (831186) and Julie (830580)

It wasn’t a jungle, but it was certainly populated by plants. The house I grew up in had plants on windowsills, in fireplaces, (after central heating came in), suspended from walls and taking pride of place in the sitting-room. Curiously their common names and in some cases their botanical names were rather negative. Upright and sharp on the sills were the Sanseviera, or Mother-in-Law’s tongues. Comedians had for a long time cast these poor women as critics of their daughters-in-law. Tredescantia plants were in the fireplaces as their variegated foliage with purple under leaves seemed to attract the gaze. Tredescantia zabrina was the commonest, known for its trailing habit. Chlorophytum, better known as The Spider Plant, dangled from picture-hooks on walls, some in macrame holders, fashionable at the time. The common name caught on because it produces plantlets on slim pale shoots which resemble the silk and the spiders sliding down. These plants caused a queasy feeling in me as a child not unlike the mild arachnophobia evoked by the real thing. Finally, the piece de resistance was the delicate monster as we called it, taking up a generous corner in the sitting room. Its botanical name is monstera deliciosa. As children do, I misheard the second word. However, it was neither delicate nor delicious. Its widely used moniker is the Swiss Cheese Plant, as its large glossy leaves are deeply indented or sliced through like Emmental. This plant managed eventually to flower and fruit but then sickened and died, decluttering the room wonderfully. Perhaps the rather irreverent nicknames reflect the familiarity of these plants then and now. They seem to work well with unpatterned rooms and minimalist décor generally, softening the bareness and offsetting the plain colours with lush green. Current taste inclines to the Scandi model of elegant simplicity eschewing the chintz and patterns of the Laura Ashley years. As well as suiting modern furnishings, the current resurgence of houseplants has also been attributed to the smaller gardens of new properties, the paving over of green spaces to provide car parking and the long working hours. Keeper of His Majesty Charles 1’s Gardens, Vines and Silkworms in 1630, John Tredescant was a fascinating man: horticulturist, plant-hunter and curator. He was first appointed Head Gardener at Hatfield House in 1610 and his employer Robert Cecil sent him abroad to collect fruit trees. He travelled widely, to the Low Countries, the Levant and Russia collecting seeds and bulbs which he kept in a large house called The Ark, in Lambeth and many species (see above) bear his name. His collection of plants, his “Cabinet of Curiosities” became the first museum open to the public. He is buried in the churchyard of St.Mary-at-Lambeth. The de-consecrated church next to Lambeth Palace has become The Museum of Garden History and fittingly the restored tomb of John Tradescant has been incorporated into the museum’s courtyard garden. On the tomb is a poem by John Aubrey praising the work of the Tredescants (father and son) and their collection of “what is rare in land, in sea, in air”. Mr. Tredescant would have been disappointed by our plants with his name. Although Baby Bio was always in the kitchen as a plant tonic, watering was erratic, and I recall rather dusty dessicated leaves and poor growth in the darker recess of the hearth. However, the monster thrived on neglect. If the Produce Show goes ahead this year, we are planning to have a HOUSE PLANT STALL where we can display our indoor plants. If we have to wait until 2021, there is more time for green fingers to activate good growth. In these extraordinary times many of us will be cultivating our plants and gardens as a therapeutic activity. We have already sprung into action and plan to make our house and garden the cleanest and tidiest they ever have been. CS

Hilton Flower Club Our MARCH meeting was a great success, TIM MEEKIN was our demonstrator, he did 8 wonderful arrangements which 8 lucky ladies took home. He also gave us some great ideas on what to do with just a few flowers and foliage that could still look stunning. It was an enjoyable afternoon; I am sure we will be asking Tim back again. APRIL 6th is our workshop, DONT FORGET YOUR SCISSORS. MAY 4th BEVERLEY and JUNE will be doing the flower demonstration, they will be doing 2 or 3 arrangements each so you could be a lucky winner and take an arrangement home. MAY 4th will be our last meeting before our FLOWER FESTIVAL in August, so we will be ironing out the final details . We had another enjoyable meeting in March, first with the usual business and a sales table with items sold donating 10 per cent to our

funds. Hilton WI was first formed in 1920 but with two earlier breaks before establishing its present continuity we are celebrating the centenary of our original formation. With this in mind and at the invitation of the Feast Week committee we are looking forward to co-operating with a part of this summer's Feast Week featuring 'Then and Now' which we believe will be an interesting display. Of course, this will be coronavirus crisis permitting. Our speaker was Alan Hiscox, the director of the British Horse Society and formerly of the Metropolitan Mounted Police for many years. Alan gave us an entertaining and

very amusing account of his experiences and the horses' lives but throughout there was a serious and evident thread showing the deep trust and enormous courage that exists between them. Sometimes our tears were not far away on seeing his power point pictures of past and more recent dangerous situations. Historically, policing horses were first used from 1758 for delivering messages and as Turnpikes (we later had to Google them!) and with horses joining the Metropolitan force in 1889. In more modern times they have been involved in the riots of the 1930s, in wartime and countless more occasions of crowd control. Alan has travelled to many countries in co-operation with other national forces and in seeking to buy potentially suitable horses. Police horses are chosen specifically for their colour and consequent roles, a height of 16-17 hands and for their temperament. They must be steady, bold and trainable with a need for character and presence, also to have the strength and stamina to bear the weight of both the rider and his equipment. Once trained they can be ridden by any member of the mounted police, a training that has to cover every possible experience so it is as careful and gradual as necessary in learning to face up to anything from fire and very loud noises to people who might sadly be hostile to horse or rider. Alan ended with a short video by a young lady whose much beloved horse was killed and herself badly injured by a speeding driver. With 87 horses killed on our roads last year this was a seriously powerful reminder for all car drivers to pass riders and horses on the roads with respect and care. After

such an informative talk we were pleased to make a donation in support of the work of the British Horse Society, a very enjoyable talk reminding us of our pride in police horses and their riders who so bravely help to keep the peace

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 the WI Committee have quickly been in touch with

Members to offer support, advice and reassurance that they will all be supported as far as possible by a team of willing members and they should never feel alone and

isolated...assistance has been offered for setting up social media apps, "whatsapp" chat groups are starting, and someone is on the end of the phone for them if needed. A regular

newsletter will be emailed each fortnight with information, humour, articles and quizzes written by the Members. The message is "Keep Calm and Carry On"...

We hope that, by the time you get this edition of ‘Spectrum’ we have very much got through the

worst of the last few months and can all begin to get on with important things in life. Like most of our village neighbours, the Village Hall Management C’tee have ‘been keeping calm and carrying on’! So much so, that we can now pre-warn you about dates coming up throughout the year: The first event is our AGM to be held on 18th May, with any neighbours coming along at 8 o/clock for drinks/nibbles/chats after listening to what has been happening in the Hall over the last year.

The next event will be on 27th June SUMMER SUPPER. There will be a DOG SHOW on The Green, on 31st August i.e. the Bank Holiday Finally, after several disappointed people from last year, we are pleased to say there WILL be a PIE & MASH in November. COFFEE STOP - this is proving to be a popular afternoon event every 2nd Thursday of the month. If there is anyone in the Village who would like to come along but are finding it difficult - maybe with actually getting to the Hall OR you are a little bit unsure/shy - please call Doreen 830250, and I will be more than happy to come and collect you, settle you in with a nice cup of tea and a delicious slice of home-made cake and introduce you to others around - you may even bump into one of your neighbours, who knows? Give it a try. Please keep checking our VH web, notice boards and, of course, ‘Spectrum’. Doreen Bates

Hilton Art Club We had an interesting workshop with Caroline Furlong. The subject was Acrylic Mediums, Inks and Watercolours and Caroline brought many different products with her and share with us and explained how we could use them to add texture, as well as ideas with things we may already have, like bubble wrap, clingfilm, tissue paper and stencils. We got down to having a go ourselves, some painting full pictures, others just trying things out and having fun. Unfortunately, there will be no Art Club until September, due to the Covid19 virus, in line with government advice to avoid social contact and to protect the health of everyone in the Club. We will be back!
