April 2020

On CallA community news publication of the Arlington, Texas Police Department

Thank You!

On March 5th, Entertainment Unit Officers Thomas Waghorne and Trenton Thomas spoke to the kids at the Salvation Army in our North District during their character building program.

The character building program is offered for children from Pre-K through 8th grade. They learn basic life skills and earn badges for every activity they complete. During the discussion, they learned about the dangers of drugs and the consequences of substance abuse. Both officers also talked about the work they do to help keep our community safe from those dangers. This was followed by several questions from the kids. This was great was a opportunity to educate our youth.

The Salvation Army is an essential part of our community. Since the coronavirus pandemic, they have seen a dramatic increase in requests for help, particularly for food, and are working with government and health officials to safely continue serving through-out the crisis. Their doors remain open to those most impacted by COVID-19 including those who have been laid off, low-wage employees facing limited hours

When Walking

• Make sure someone else knows the area you will be in

• Walk in well-lit areas during dusk and avoid walking after dark if possible

• Know safe places to go if you are in trouble, such as a police station, fire station, neighbor’s house, etc.

• Always carry a cell phone in case of emergency

• Be aware of your surroundings and avoid wearing headphones so you can hear what/who is around you

Scam Safety

• Do not give personal information unless you initiate the contact

• Do not buy from unfamiliar websites if shopping on-line: look for security features on the website for legitimacy

• Avoid inputting credit/debit/bank account information on-line: use safer, trusted methods such as PayPal where your information is stored in one location with one company

Home Safety

• Always make it appear as though someone is home: keep lights on in the house and your porch light on at night

• Make sure all doors and windows are locked, and that the security bar is put back in place on sliding glass doors after use

• Do not hide a spare key outside in obvious places

• Do not enter your home if your door is open or kicked in: call 9-1-1 so the police can make sure your home is safe to enter
