Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
On this fourth Sunday of Easter, God is inviting us to reflect on the image of Shepherd. We hear in the gospel Jesus say very clearly ‘I am the Good Shepherd’. As the good Shepherd, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us, his sheep. Not only did Jesus Christ lay down his life for us, his sheep, but he also guided us in the ways that would help us to stay close to the Lord.
What makes a good Shepherd? First, I would say a good Shepherd is one who loves his people. I love every person I minister to as God’s chosen Shepherd. Yet when we are called to love, that doesn’t mean that we do what someone necessarily wants. Sometimes, as a Shepherd, I am called to offer tough love for the sake of the gospel, and even more importantly, for the sake of the eternal wellbeing of someone’s soul. Our Lord Jesus did that as our Shepherd. Second, a Shepherd leads. As a Shepherd, I am called to lead people to the Good Shepherd who is Jesus Christ. The work of the church is to do just that. Third, a Shepherd is there for his sheep. I heard it said once from a parishioner, that it is important to have a priest there in the best of times as well as in the worst of times.
Priests are not the only ones who are shepherds. We are all called to lead one another in the way of faith. Yes, priests are ordained in the person of Jesus Christ; but the work of all of you as lay faithful, sisters, and deacons is just as important. We are all called to lead one another to Jesus our Good Shepherd. As we continue to celebrate the joy of the resurrection, may we continue to heed our Lord’s call to lead one another in the way of Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd. On this Sunday as every day, I also ask us all to pray for vacations to the priesthood and religious life. We should also pray for greater vocational fidelity on the part of all of us. By being faithful to our vocation, we can do as the Good Shepherd tells us to do and this is to lead all God’s people back into the sheepfold. May Jesus our Good Shepherd bless you all.
