Xegesis ups ‘Shock’ factorHip-hop duo todrop latest albumat Andy’s bar
Courtesy photo
Scott McBride and Ritchy Flow, a.k.a. Xegesis, plan to ring in
their third album, Shock Therapy Sessions, proper at Andy’s
Bar.
By Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
Scott McBride insists thatDenton’s Xegesisthought it had exhausted
the whole “shock” theme. Theduo — McBride writes withbeat-maker Ritchy Flow —christened its first albumFuture Shock and then fol-lowed it up with Aftershock.
The latest effort brought thetheme of shock back again.
“We really weren’t going touse that anymore,” saidMcBride. “But then we cameup with shock therapy sessionsand that was too good to letgo.”
Shock Therapy Sessions isanother parcel of evidence inthe Denton hip-hop vault. Itconfirms that Flow andMcBride aren’t satisfied by theunending posturing that per-vades mass-market hip-hop.Rather, the two young menhave decided to sit in judg-ment of themselves — wartsand all — and leave listeners topull the lever to deliver theblackout juice to their collec-tive musical brain.
On Shock Therapy, Xegesisdeals with some serious emo-tional dope, but the two rap-pers acknowledge the Janushead that is masculinity. Onepart of them is still comfort-able in boyhood, where theycan be the patron saint ofimmaturity — begging themetaphorical ladies in the
crowd to put up with theirbutt-grabbing, bra strap-snap-ping hooliganism. The otherpart of them — the bill-paying,job-doing part of them —examines the meaning of man-hood. Is being grown an exer-cise in stepping and fetching tothe fat cats’ whims? Or canthey connect with someone —anyone — who will let themtake off the puffy-chested andverse-slinging mask and stillstick around. That’s the thrustof “Lost.” This is where hip-hopfinds a shred of humanity anda fiber of redemption — whenthe artists drop what poetSarah Jones calls “the emptypursuit of props and egos” andstart trying “to make love de lasoul.” McBride and Flow wishthey could fry the bad stufffrom their gray matter, butthey also get that they need topick the bones of bad deaths,
whether it’s a dream or a rela-tionship that’s been incinerat-ed.
Shock Therapy doesn’t apol-ogize for the bare-knucklesrhymes that could bruise femi-nist sensibilities.
“We don’t rap about stuffjust to be offensive,” Flow said.“The words mean something, and sometimes they don’tmean what you think they do.”
The album rocks a little nas-tier than Aftershock, withmore raw sexual referencesand fewer double entendres. And yet the groove on “Put MeIn Your Mouth” flies fast withCzech rapper Jackpot takingover some verses that soundas, er, invitational as theyprobably come off in English.
Sounds like: A boy wholikes basketball and books.
Details: Xegesis throws aCD release party 10 p.m.Saturday at Andy’s Bar, 122 N.Locust St. Mullet Mike andFab Deuce open. Cover is $7.

In The Five-
Year
Engagement,
Tom (Jason
Segel) and
Violet (Emily
Blunt) intend
to marry, but
the blessed
event keeps
getting post-
poned.
UniversalPictures
Going nowhere, slowlyBy Christy LemireAP Movie Critic
The problem that plagues so many JuddApatow productions — the one that keepsgood comedies from being great ones —unfortunately exists in The Five-YearEngagement, too. It’s a matter of knowingwhen to say when, of knowing which bitsshould be trimmed and which should havebeen cut altogether.
The Five-Year Engagement is so scat-tered and overlong, it really feels like it lastsfive years, and even the inherent likabilityof stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt can’tovercome the film’s pervasive sense ofstrain. It almost gets to the point where youhope these two will break up for good, justbecause it’s the pragmatic thing to do andbecause it would finally wrap things up.
And that’s a shame, because the moviereunites Segel with Nicholas Stoller; thetwo also co-wrote 2008’s Forgetting SarahMarshall, one of the more well-balancedApatow productions.
Engagement touches on themes of lovefound and lost in a serious way, and to itscredit, it does find some moments of emo-tional truth amid the inconsistent laughs. But man, it can be a messy slog to get to
them.It begins promisingly enough, though.
Segel’s Tom Solomon, a sous chef at anupscale San Francisco restaurant, proposesto his girlfriend, Blunt’s Violet Barnes, onthe one-year anniversary of the night theymet: New Year’s Eve. Blunt and Segel havean easy, low-key way with each other inthese early scenes that never rises to full-scale, crackling chemistry.
But as they’re planning their wedding,Violet gets accepted to the University ofMichigan to study for her doctorate in psy-chology, so they postpone their big day forthe first of many times. Seasons change, years pass and Tom isn’t nearly so enam-ored of snowy Ann Arbor as he pretendedto be at the beginning. Meanwhile, Violet isasked to stay and do post-doctorate work,
so they’re stuck in marital limbo evenlonger than expected. Tom continuestrudging away at a deli that is totallybeneath his culinary expertise while Violetworks even more closely with her intrigu-ing Welsh professor (Rhys Ifans).
Additionally, Violet’s sister (Alison Brie)has gotten pregnant from a drunken rompwith Tom’s loutish best friend (Chris Pratt),and the resulting pregnancy — and wed-ding, and baby — supposedly serve as fur-ther obstacles to Violet and Tom’s nuptials.
This all sounds like a drag, right? That’sbecause it is.
Stoller and Segel try to liven things upwith wacky gags and oddball supportingcharacters, including Tom’s profane boss(Brian Posehn), who’s obsessed with pick-ling things; Tom’s only friend (ChrisParnell), a university spouse who knits slop-py sweaters and teaches him to hunt deer;and Ming (Randall Park), one of Violet’sresearch partners who has wild ideas forexperiments that are never funny.
One character slices off part of a finger.Another loses a toe. And on it rambles.
The movie finally finds some much-needed whimsy at the absolute end — butby then, it’s too late.
‘Engagement’ gets off to good start but ends up in unfunny limbo
The Five-YearEngagement

The weather forecast says Denton can expect plenty of sun and warm temperatures this weekend. That means a summerdress code — and some sunscreen — for attendees of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. The little ones have plenty to do atthe Children’s Art Tent and at Steve Gryb’s Percussion Petting Zoo, and adults can shop hundreds of vendor booths and
check out seven stages.

Festivalout forgetting about flavor.
Jazz guitarists have beenmade — and probably broken— at the University of NorthTexas Jazz Studies program.Ritenour is a Cali musicianwho can be a supporting playerfor a vocalist or sax soloist, orhe can weave a song out of theair, picking up a theme from afellow player and elaboratingon it. And though Ritenour —who’s been nominated for 17Grammy Awards — is at hisbest when he’s bumpingthrough a cool, funky numberwith a proper drummer and afearless musician, he can alsochannel the simmer ofBrazilian music. When themoment calls for it, Ritenourcan cook. (An example?Ritenour puts a heated-updetermination in the TracyChapman song “Give Me OneReason.”)

It’shard to hold a grudge when thegroove is on the move.)
If Los Lonely Boys had amusical motto, it would be“don’t fence me in,” Garza said. And if Rockpango is indeed aparty, then its revelers are gray-

“To be quite honest, we’rereally just tired of genres,”Garza said. “We’re really sick ofthe way people are divided bythe way they listen to music, because at the end of the day, people listen to a lot of music. We’re on a major label, andthey want to go in a directionthat makes it easier for them toknow who to market our musicto, and honestly, we don’t careabout that. We’re not a stylisticband; we’re free roamin’. We’rewandering through the colorsof the sky. When we makemusic, it doesn’t matter to uswhat color you are, where youlive or what you do, you know?We just want to make musicthat makes you feel something. That’s where the magic is.”
The record was a place forsome songs that didn’t have analbum yet, Garza said.
“Some of it was already writ-ten, like ‘16 Monkeys’ and ‘PornStar.’ Those two songs had beenaround five years or more. There were some more recentsongs on it, too,” Garza said.“When we go into the studio,we don’t go in and go, ‘Let’stake this thing in this direction.’It’s very organic.”
The album’s title track isproof that the Garzas proudlyclaim two cultures.
“The song is a huapango,”Garza said. “It’s a rock huapan-go.”
From Page 9
FestivalThat it is. Written in a fast
dance, six-eighths tempo timesignature, you can hear theundulating rhythm. But therock energy and attitude isundeniable. It’s also the song onthe album that is most evocativeof Stevie Ray Vaughan, thoughwithout the manic, shrill guitarVaughan was known for. “BabyGirl” is an urgent proposal for acertain someone’s affections, with a touch of guitar tribute toSantana.
The band calls Austin home, and hasn’t gotten the itch topick and move to Los Angeles,New York or Nashville.
Texas, it seems, is the properSouthwestern mix of black, brown and white music andculture. And Texas musicianslike to hang with communitywithout having to kowtow topurists.
“I’ll be really honest withyou,” Garza said. “Every placeon Earth is special. But yeah,Texas is a really magical place. It’s something in the water, inthe soil. It’s home, and a lot ofpeople feel like you do yourbest work from home. Texas ishome for us, and this is wherewe’ll stay.”

Wells Fargo-Budweiser Jazz Stage
It wouldn’t be Arts & JazzFestival without Denton’s BraveCombo closing everythingdown with its ever-fresh cha-chas, cumbias and polkas thatdance from the Czech Republicall the way over to Mexico.
The two-time Grammy win-ning polka band never seems toslow down. A new album isabout to be released, and theoutfit recently lent its incompa-rable party set for a fundraiserfor the Selwyn School, an inter-
national preparatory schoolthat lost part of its space to afire recently.
You never know what toexpect from the combo.Frontman Carl Finch seems toscent out the audience andserve up a rocking feast to suitwhomever wants to dance. Some years, the group has visit-ed it’s older catalog, sendingcouples spinning to “DoSomething Different” and “IceMachine in the Dessert.” Otheryears, the band has kept thingsto a spicier, Tejano-style polkashow.
Send the sun on its way thisweekend at the final show ofthe festival, and you might hearan oldie made over as aBavarian dance hall number.
With Brave Combo — thehokey pokey happens — and allthings are possible.
