The past couple of weeks we have been celebrating First Communions for our young people. A wonderful time
not only for these children and their families, but also for us — their Parish Family. It is a sign of growth here at
Saint Ursula’s and we should be happy.
Obviously with these types of celebrations we expect many guests. Some of these guests are from the parish,
some are from neighboring parishes, some are are non-Catholic, some are Catholics who may not have been to
Church in some time. No matter what, they are are always welcome.
In welcoming our guests the past few weekends, it had me thinking — and my thoughts were confirmed when
several approached me and reminded me that this is a wonderful opportunity to help these visitors in
understanding ‘Catholic Church Etiquette.’ We must admit, at times we forget what we are doing, why we are
doing it, and sometime what we should not do. So, from time to time, I thought I would use the bulletin and oth-
er forms of communication to refresh our memories and help us to celebrate properly and fully at Mass and most
importantly to give good example to out guest. With that...
The following article appeared in a “Liturgy Training Publication” article entitled “Bulletin Clips.” I share it
with you as a gentle reminder that we need to hear from time to time. God bless you!
You know the line about opera: “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.” The same is true about Sunday Mass. And
no, the “fat lady” is not a reference to me.... She is us—all of us—the assembled church! Sated (miraculously
with just a morsel and a sip), stuffed on grace, a bit tired from sincere thanksgiving and sustained praise, the
assembly has to finish this liturgy before it’s over. Would the cast of our favorite television show leave before
the finale? The Orioles before last out? At Mass, we are all the cast, all the orchestra, all the team.
The end of Mass comes quickly: After a moment of silence that follows communion, there is a prayer, possibly
some announcements, then a blessing, the dismissal and the final song. So, is it really asking too much of each of
us to see it through to the very end? Sure, you might be blocking in someone’s car in the parking lot. But, if we
all stay till the end, what difference does it make? Of course the little ones are antsy; and possibly a few older
ones as well. A few minutes more will not hurt.
And yes, not slipping out early means rubbing elbows with everyone, people jamming up at the doors and a
procession of cars crawling out of the parking lot, but isn’t this a consequence of the Communion that we just
shared? Isn’t this how we know that we are becoming what we have shared: the Body of Christ, risen from the
dead, going out into the world to give to others what has been given to us?
It is a simple act of kindness—finishing the Mass before leaving. And if we slow down just enough to finish the
Mass, maybe we will slowly learn to finish other things in life, too. And when we learn to relish and not rush the
end of things—the last minutes of a movie, the final words of a conversation, the last hand of cards and the final
set of pins to knock down—what we are truly learning is to relish and not rush the end of our days—a final act of
gratitude that gives God praise.

God bless!
A Message From Fr. Jason
Catholic Q & A
Why is Easter 50 days long?
The season of Easter, known as Eastertide, is 50 days long,
running from Easter Sunday through Pentecost Sunday. The
40th day of the season is Ascension Thursday, where
we commemorate the Lord Ascending to heaven, however, it
is generally transferred to the Sunday before Pentecost in the
United States, and many other locations.
The tradition of a 50 day long celebration of Easter is
somewhat universal, still being recognized in many branches
of Christianity, including many mainline protestant churches.
The reason behind the length may be obvious, but sometimes
it’s the obvious that is so easy to overlook. Jesus rose from the
dead on Easter Sunday, and walked the earth with his
disciples for 40 days. On that 40th day, he ascended to heaven
to be seated at the right hand of the father. It was 10 days
later, on Pentecost, that, having kept his promise, he sent
the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
Easter and is so central to who we are as Christians that we
joyously celebrate it for 50 days! It’s an invitation to grow
closer to Christ, to celebrate his life, death and resurrection to
the fullest, and to partake in the Sacraments he instituted.
Saint of the Day
Saint Catherine of Sienna: April 29th
The value Catherine makes central in her short life and which
sounds clearly and consistently through her experience is
complete surrender to Christ. What is most impressive about
her is that she learns to view her surrender to her Lord as a
goal to be reached through time.
She was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and
grew up as an intelligent, cheerful, and intensely religious
person. Catherine disappointed her mother by cutting off her
hair as a protest against being overly encouraged to improve
her appearance in order to attract a husband. Her father or-
dered her to be left in peace, and she was given a room of her
own for prayer and meditation.
She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the
next three years in seclusion, prayer, and austerity. Gradually,
a group of followers gathered around her—men and women,
priests and religious. An active public apostolate grew out of
her contemplative life. Her letters, mostly for spiritual
instruction and encouragement of her followers, began to take
more and more note of public affairs. Opposition and slander
resulted from her mixing fearlessly with the world and
speaking with the candor and authority of one completely
committed to Christ. She was cleared of all charges at the
Dominican General Chapter of 1374.
Her public influence reached great heights because of her
evident holiness, her membership in the Dominican Third
Order, and the deep impression she made on the pope. She
worked tirelessly for the crusade against the Turks and for
peace between Florence and the pope.
In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of
Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even
saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of
her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause
of Pope Urban VI and the unity of the Church. She offered
herself as a victim for the Church in its agony. She died
surrounded by her “children” and was canonized in 1461.
Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers
of the Church. In 1939, she and Francis of Assisi were
declared co-patrons of Italy. Pope Paul VI named her and
Teresa of Avila doctors of the Church in 1970. Her spiritual
testament is found in The Dialogue.of Ezekiel’s vision of four
winged creatures to the evangelists.

PRAYER FOR OUR PARISH
Lord, I come before you today with a humble heart.
I ask that you open the hearts of every parishioner
of Saint Ursula Parish. Give us all hearts on fire for
You and help us to desire you more. May every one
of us make Sunday Mass a priority, and put You first
in our lives. Open our hearts and minds so we may
know Your Holy Will for us, and give us the courage
to faithfully follow you.
Loving God, thank you for the gift of the priests
who shepherd us, and bring Christ to us in the
Sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in faith.
Set their hearts on fire for love of Christ and all of
Christ’s people. Strengthen in them the gifts of the
Holy Spirit, which are wisdom, understanding,
counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of
the Lord.
Thank you, Lord, for the staff and volunteers who
work tirelessly to provide for the spiritual needs of
the parish. May they continue to lead people to
Christ, and be an example of love and service to
others in the parish. Help them to faithfully follow
You and Your Holy Church. Give them strength in
the face of temptation, adversity, and indifference.
Revive our parish, Lord, and use all the individuals
prayed for today to bring about a renewed zeal.
May we be Missionary Disciples in a world in des-
perate need of You. We ask all this through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. —
Amen.
