National Volunteer Week was established by President Richard Nixon with an execu-tive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sit-ting U.S. president since Nixon has issued a proclamation dur-ing National Volunteer Week,

thus showing the importance of the noble act of volunteering.

Since its inception, the emphasis on Volunteer Week celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Every April, charities, hospitals, and communities rec-ognize volunteers and foster a culture of service.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of many organiza-tions especially those in the nonprofit sector. Just about every nonprofit charitable organization uses volunteers in some capacity. In most cases, like with our own Chamber of Commerce, board members serve without compensation. Even if an organization employs paid staff, volunteers still provide valuable service.

I would like to give a special thank you and recognition to all who serve as volunteers in our community, including those who serve on our Chamber Board and Executive Committee, for their tireless commitment to the success of the

businesses, organizations and people of this com-munity. My position at North Okaloosa Medical Center allows me the privilege to oversee the hospital’s Volunteer Services program, therefore; I would be remiss not to take this opportunity to thank our hospital volunteers for their devotion and dedication to our patients, patient families and our staff. We wouldn’t be the same without their many talents and warm smiles!

It is Spring Time and our earth is waking up from a very cold winter here in Northwest Florida. Aren’t we glad! Just think back on how consistent Nature reacts to the seasons---year after year; millennium after millennium. Nature never gives up even after the first ray of sunshine and the burst of a flower. It continues to grow, blossom and thrive. Consistency at its very best!

4-H in the United States is a youth organization administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), with the mission of “engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development”. The organization has over 6.5 million members in the United States, from ages 5 to 18, in approximately 90,000 clubs. Through America’s 110 land-grant universities and its Cooperative Extension System, 4-H reaches every corner of our nation—from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities. With a network of more than 6 million youth, 540,000 volunteers, 3,500 professionals, and more than 25 million alumni, 4-H helps shape youth to move our country and the world forward in ways that no other youth organization can.

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills of youth through experiential learning programs and a positive youth development approach. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology programs.

The 4-H program aims to educate youth

in arts and sciences and to encourage fellowship and service opportunities. With continued urban sprawl, 4-H continues to develop new projects for its members to study beyond agriculture and animal husbandry, including photography, conservation, cooking, public speaking, shooting sports, history, art, and other pursuits. The organization is often associated with summer camps, county fairs and state fairs that youth are able to

participate in year round. Volunteer leaders play a major role in 4-H

programs and are the heart and soul of 4-H. They perform a variety of roles, functions and tasks to coordinate the 4-H program at the county level and come from all walks of life, bringing varied and rich experiences to the 4-H program. Every year, volunteer leaders work to carry out 4-H youth development programs through community clubs, project groups, camps, conferences, animal shows and many more 4-H related activities and events. 4-H volunteer leaders help youth to achieve greater self-confidence and self-responsibility, learn new skills and build relationships with others that will last a lifetime.

The colon or the large intestines as it is better known, is an area of wonder for those of us who deal with abnormalities of the colon and rectum. We think it is probably the most important organ in the body. When the colon is not functioning well, people will ignore all other problems, their hearts, their Lungs and even the brains just to get colon relief. It starts very early in life. That infant’s cry in the middle of the night when you know it’s from a dirty diaper and you’re both trying to pretend that you’re asleep followed by the bony elbow in the ribs to say; “It’s your turn”!

Of course we all remember being late for work as we pleaded with our two-year-old to go potty on the toilet. We promised them a new puppy or a Corvette! All of this is to no avail, because this is the one thing that they can control. During the early adolescence years, our kids are an endless source of “potty jokes”. The colon-problems may disappear for a few years when the kids are grown and gone and you’re trying to regain your senses, only to reappear again. It may appear as irritable bowel syndrome, persistent diarrhea, constipation or an endless number of possible infections and consternations. So we return to where we started, when the most important part of the day is a good bowel movement.

This is why it is so important to keep your colon in tiptop shape. One way to do this is to maintain a good high fiber diet and obtain regular recommended colonoscopies. We know that 85% of colon cancer comes from polyps in the colon. If these are removed before they can turn into a cancer, we can prevent the heartache and the

suffering that comes with advanced colon cancer.March was colorectal cancer awareness month. Bringing awareness to this silent

killer is important to physicians who see this preventable disease much too often. There are 93,000 colon cancers and 39,000 rectal cancers diagnosed each year. It is the third most common kind of cancer; please don’t be a statistic. Scheduling your colonoscopy is easy. Your first colonoscopy should be at age 50 even if you have no symptoms, and earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps. The symptoms of colorectal cancer may resemble other conditions, such as infections, hemorrhoids, and inflammatory bowel disease. If you experience any change in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool that lasts for more than a few days, please have it checked. Other symptoms may include, rectal bleeding, dark stools, or blood in the stool, cramping or gnawin g stomach pain, decreased appetite, unintended weight loss, fatigue, or a feeling that you need to have a bowel movement that is not relieved by doing so. It is also possible to have colon cancer and not have any symptoms at all. Talk to your primary care physician about your colon cancer risks on your next visit and stay healthy.

Hope for a promising first year for the Paul Hsu Foundation Teachers Excellence Awards in Math and Science (PHF TEAMS) became a reality at the chamber’s March breakfast meeting. The breakfast sponsor was, most appropriately, the North Okaloosa Schools who had lots of their folks on hand to see Michele Hokans (Math, Crestview High) and Fiona Lukas (Math, Baker) accept the top two awards of $5000 each. Seven other finalists received $100 each thanks to the generous support of BBVA Compass. Those finalists included: Crestview High - Melissa Brown (Math) and Sharon Steen (Science); Laurel Hill School - Lena Steele (Math), Debra Adams (Math), and Wanda Cooper (Information technology); Baker High - Stacy Burlison (Science) and Sarah Griffith (Math).

The PHF TEAMS chamber committee also received appreciation and support from principals Dexter Day, Mike Martello and Lee Martello, as well as, Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson, who was on hand to congratulate all of the finalists. The Paul Hsu Foundation was the driving force for the idea, and also providing the substantial funding, to the chamber to administer this unique program to benefit North Okaloosa County Schools.

The chamber committee spent nearly a full year developing the process for this initial year’s program, which was open to math, science and allied technology teachers from Crestview, Baker and Laurel Hill, grades 9 through 12. The competition was strong and the committee noted that the margins were razor thin between all of the teachers participating - a great sign for the educational value all of these teachers bring to our area.

The teacher recognition program caught the attention of the Taiwanese ambassador from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami. Director General Philip Wang made a point of revamping his busy schedule to attend the award’s ceremony and in addition to making a brief address to the overflow crowd, Mr. Wang spent considerable time in the area making contacts for business and educational opportunities between Taiwan and our local region. It was a great day for the Crestview Area and for education.

We have all shopped for bikes only to have found the right one we like with the wrong seat. Many do not fully understand the role a seat plays on the bike and will quickly judge a seat by its look. The seat is meant to distribute the rider’s weight while reducing chaffing and maximizing performance. Not all saddles are equal as our sit bones are all spaced differently, a great saddle for one person can be bad for another. Seats are made in many sizes and shapes with different amount of paddings to fit the intended purpose. Let’s take a look at the typical saddles you may find at our bike shop and explain their purpose.

The Cruiser SeatBig with lots of

cushion, many like this just because it looks comfortable, and it is, but it is designed for short rides while seated completely upright. If your intention is to truly work up a sweat this cushion may cause tremendous friction leading to chafing. This seat is found on cruiser bikes as you would not typically use this bike for working up a sweat.

The Hybrid SeatBikes with this seat

may have you seated with a slight lean forward but not fully tucked in an aero position like a road bike. Your weight is now shifted slightly and padding the tail bone will vary. The nose is also narrow to help reduce friction. This saddle may be f ound on bikes such as Hybrids or Mountain bikes.

The Race SeatWell most refer to

this as a racing seat. This is meant to be ridden for hours they do have minimal padding and the seat may flex to provide comfort. At long distances or numerous hours on the seat, padding and flex may create friction leading to discomfort and degrading performance. These saddles are usually aided in comfort by the use of cycling shorts which are

padded.

Proper adjustment goes a long way.While most people typically run to the

store to find the softest seat. A seat that is not properly adjusted will also cause problems. So before you run to the store follow these tips first.

• Ensure your seat post is NOT set too high, where your knees are locked out at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

• Check that the nose of the seat is NOT pointed to high that it causes numbness or pointed to low that you feel like you are sliding off the seat.

• Always start adjustments with your seat as close to level as possible then make adjustments minor adjustments up or down.

• Adjust your seat forward or rearward just a few millimeters at a time.

SuggestionsWhen shopping for a bike do not look

for the softest seat. First find the right bike for the intended purpose. Remember that if you have not ridden a bike in a long time that your bottom may be slightly sore, just like if you have not ran in a long time your legs will also be sore. Ensure the seat is in a good position and make adjustments as necessary.

I walked out of my office the other day, preparing to put some signs out for the Triple B and was immediately assaulted by the sounds of birds chirping, 73 degrees temperature and bright sunny skies. That was an assault I can live with and have for 21 years, now. We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful place and spring here is, in my opinion, the very best time of year.

I know I am crazy, most of you would probably agree with that statement, but I love spring and summer. The hotter it is the better. It’s easier, in my mind, to cool off than to warm up. But I would rather brave a winter here than somewhere else. I lived in Omaha Nebraska and Minot North Dakota, so this is paradise and the reason I live here and will until they put me into the sandy soil.

My In-Laws live in Oklahoma and sisters in St. Louis
