Welcome to the “Reno Meeting”! As annual sponsors of this meeting, WSC, Inc.* a federation of the eleven Western States, proudly presents another fine array of seminarsand exhibits. The Conference participants have opportunities to attend business and technical clinics and to earn CDT continuing education credits. The “hot” topics, techniquesand products featured on this program are sure to peak the interest of all techniciansregardless of your position or experience level in the laboratory . This year especially learnhow to drive your business growth and adapt to the changing business environment.Join your colleagues and be challenged into new ways of thinking to thrive-not-just survive in the new economic state. The conference is featuring “Digital Dentistry” andMarketing/Business classes to help you accomplish this goal.

We encourage you to register early as some class sizes are limited. W e know that as technicians, we spend a lot of time at the bench. Periodically we need a break from thedaily routine to network, discuss common interests and problems, and just relax and havesome fun. David Brigham, CDT owns Bay AreaDental Lab in Coos Bay, Oregon.David’s involvement in the dental lab-oratory industry started with theOregon Association of DentalLaboratories serving two terms asOADL President. He is a Trustee ofWSC, Inc. after served several terms asthe President of WSC, Inc. David cur-rently serves on the NADL Board ofDirector as the ComponentRepresentative.

Doug Horton, CDT, has lectured,trained and directed hands-on work-shops worldwide on the fabrication ofPorcelain Laminate Veneers. Hereceived a research grant from OHSUto teach and provide all-ceramicrestorations to the Senior DentalStudents and study clubs lead by Dr.Bill Dugan. His lab, Precision DentalArts, Inc. has followed the evolution ofthe all-ceramic restoration for over 25years. Today they find themselvesdeeply immersed within the innovativeworld of digital dentistry. Doug under-stands the benefits that CAD-CAMtechnologies offer to the future of theirbusiness. Utilizing the efficiency ofSirona’s Inlab Milling System allowsfull control of the restorations theydesign, increased production and opti-mal aesthetic products he can of fer hisdoctors.

Dr. Darwin Lum graduated fromUCLA School of Dentistry in 1983.For 10 years he was responsible fororganizing high level continuing edu-cation for the Napa Solano DentalSociety. He is active in three studygroups and has been a member of theDRS Study Group in Sacramento since1988. He has set-up and organized alocal integrated team of general den-tists and specialists, which have metmonthly in his office since 1996. In

David Nakanishi, CDT is President ofNakanishi Dental Laboratory in Bellevue,Wa. His career as a dental technicianbegan in high school when he worked forhis father’s laboratory. For more than 25years, David has worked to foster excel-lence in dentistry and is dedicated to sup -porting the best education possible fordentists and technicians. He serves as aTrustee on the NBC Board.

Dennis Ouye, CDT, is the President ofLDL Designs, Inc. a dental laboratory inBerkeley, California. As a certified tech-nician, he lectures and conducts hands-oncourses to various study groups and stateassociations. He has given courses withDr. Harry Albers for dental technicians atUCSF and UOP dental schools. He hasalso taught ceramics a Diablo ValleyCollege in Pleasant Hill, California. Forfifteen years he published a question andanswer column for the magazine LMT.Recently he lectured for the Pacific CoastProsthodontic Society in San Francisco,California. In 2005 he was asked to be aconsultant and give hands-on ceramiccourses for 3M ESPE.

Extractions were theanswer for anatomy but what aboutColor and characterization? Thisnext level has come to us in theform of Digital photography. Now Dennis Lanier can build hiscrowns while the image is on thecomputer screen. Dennis states:” We can see the teeththat we are to copy in there naturalhabitat, in full color and the sur-rounding influences needed to dotruly great work.”

Since 80 to 85% of all restorationsare posterior units, this course willconcentrate on posterior buildup,porcelain margins, and tips onporcelain finishing. Through con-sulting and interacting with some ofthe most successful laboratories inthis country and internationally Mr.Harms has developed and refinedinnovative steps and techniques forporcelain fused to metal restora-tions. You will be taught how tobuild up a posterior crown in lessthan 8 minutes, press porcelainmargins with only a techniciansexperience in Crown & Bridge andfinish a posterior crown in less than10 minutes. Fixed and removable implant sup-ported and retained prostheses havetraditionally been fabricated in thedental laboratory using a lost waxtechnique. Technology has changedto include several other techniquesthat potentially are superior to thetraditional methods. Titanium is avery biocompatible and versatilematerial and when combined withlaser welding techniques can yield avery well fitting, biocompatible andstrong prosthesis. Team planningand fabrication techniques will bediscussed along with clinical andlaboratory steps and techniques.Multiple patients treated with fixedor removable prosthesis will be pre -sented including both clinical andlaboratory considerations. Severaltime and money saving techniqueswill be presented utilizingCAD/CAM milled and laser weld-ing techniques.

Dr. Schneider works at theUniversity of Iowa Hospital andClinics, Institute of HospitalDentistry, Division of MaxillofacialProsthodontics and holds the rankof Professor, where he has a fulltime private practice treatingacquired and congenital oral facialdefects, trauma rehabilitation anddental implant restorations. Hereceived his DDS from theUniversity of Southern California in1976 and practiced general den-tistry in Arizona for five yearsbefore earning his MS and certifi-cate in prosthodontics from theUniversity of Iowa in 1983. He hasbeen a board certified prosthodon-tist since 1987.

He has published extensively in thepeer reviewed prosthodontic litera-ture and is very active in manyprosthodontic and dental laboratoryorganizations. He has been a sec -tion editor for the Journal ofProsthodontics and reviewer formany other journals. Additionallyhe lectures nationally and interna-tionally on many subjects address-ing the clinical and laboratory phas-es of fixed, removable and implantprosthodontics. He has been aTrustee of the National Board forCertification in dental laboratorytechnology. Dr. Schneider is aDiplomate of the American Boardof Prosthodontics, Fellow in theAmerican College ofProsthodontists, Past President ofthe American Prosthodontic Societyand also served for several years asthe Executive Director of the APS.He was Director of the Midwest

Prosthetic Study Club for 15 yearsand has over thirty-five years expe-rience as a dental technician. He isalso a Fellow in the InternationalTeam for Implantology and theAcademy of Osseointegration. Hehas been named to the “Best of theUS Prosthodontists” listing for sev-eral years.

Kris Schermerhorn, CDT hasbeen active in the dental laboratorybusiness fro more than 20 years.While still in his youth, he workedfor his father, owner and founder ofNorthern Virginia Dental Lab. Thisexperience provided Kris withinvaluable expertise in performingdental laboratory procedures.In 1996, Kris began working withacetal resins and other thermoplas-tic dental materials. In 2000, hebecame a consultant to CDMDental, performing research anddevelopment testing, as well astraining. Kris worked extensivelydeveloping new materials, instru-ments and techniques for removableprosthodontics. As a result of thatwork, Kris now holds severalpatents in the dental industry andhas more patents pending. In 2007he earned the NADL’s HarryHagman Inventor of the year award.His ideas have led to products thatwere voted best new product by thereaders of LMT in 2005 and againin 2007. Kris is dedicated to den -tistry and continuously looks fornew and unique solutions to prob -lems. He is determined to makedentistry better for dentists, techni-cians and most importantly forpatients.

Gary wasappointed by the Texas State Boardof Dental Examiners to serve on theDental Laboratory CertificationCouncil in 2007 and was electedChairman in 2008. Gary began lec-turing on health and safety in 1989and is an Authorized Trainer underOSHA’s Outreach Program. Gary isthe Senior Vice President withSafeLink Consulting, Inc. providingonsite consultation, audits, andworkshops on both health and safe -ty and quality assurance, includingDAMAS.
