“Dogs are dogs, cats are cats. They’re wandering animals,” said Dr. Russel Smith, DVM at the Glasgow Veterinary Clinic, as he was implanting a microchip beneath the skin of Chloe Rose, the adorable pet schnauzer owned by Linda Rees. So what exactly do these microchips do? Microchips are tiny transponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that use radio frequency waves to transmit information about your pet. Each microchip contains a unique registration number and the phone number of the registry for the particular brand of chip. A handheld scanner reads the radio frequency of the chip and displays this information. Microchips provide an extra level of protection in case your pet loses its collar and tags. Providing your cat or dog with both tags and a microchip can help ensure a happy reunion if the unthinkable happens and your companion gets lost. The animal shelter or vet clinic that finds your pet can contact the registry to get your name and phone number.

Nolan Hughes

OBITUARY

Nolan Scott Hughes, age 64, passed from this life on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at his home south of Glasgow. A celebration of his life will be held at the Glasgow Assembly of God Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2014. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Nolan was born November 25, 1949, in Miles City, Montana, the son of Scott and Grace (Dokter) Hughes. His education included first and second grades taught by his mother in the home, third grade at Lincoln School in Miles City, fourth thru eighth grades at the Monte (rural) school south of Miles City, and then four years of high school at Custer County High School, also in Miles City. He graduated in 1967, and entered Custer County Junior College that same fall. He was raised on the family ranch 22 miles south of Miles City, and in June of 1968 he joined the United States Air Force, taking his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He spent a year in Korea, and was discharged from the service in 1972 at Biloxi, Mississippi. Upon returning to the family home in Miles City, he went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad. Around the same time, a cute little waitress at the Redrock Village caught his attention, and on May 26, 1973, he and Darlene Jill Brost of Brockway, Mt. were married. They made their home in Miles City. After the Milwaukee Railroad shut down in Miles City, Nolan moved his family to Glendive, where he went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1978. In the fall of 1980 he moved the family to Glasgow with his job, where they have resided for the past 33+ years. Nolan had a real zest for life, and he loved to take his sons and his nephews on the spur of the moment and drive for hours to get to a place where there might be buried coins or some valuable treasure. Actually he really wasn’t too concerned about the buried treasure, but he enjoyed the time spent with them. He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and was quick to offer an encouraging word, a prayer, or a word of

advice. One of his favorite pieces of advice was, “You can marry more money in five minutes than you can make in a lifetime.” He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing poker, attending auctions and garage sales, and he enjoyed being with family. Since he became sick, he especially has enjoyed the times when friends stop by the family home to share a cup of coffee, a meal, a piece of pie, or whatever is at hand, and a good visit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Scott and Grace Hughes. Survivors include his wife, Darlene, two sons, Leighton, of Glasgow, and Jeremiah (Angela) of Aberdeen, SD, and one daughter, Ashley (Aaron) Berkram of Glasgow, two brothers, Curtis (Margi Lou) Hughes of Billings, MT and Sid (Twilla) Hughes of Minot, ND, two sisters, Sharon (Loyal) Kauffman of Glasgow, and Janice (Larry) Inches, of Aberdeen, SD and one aunt, Sylvia Hughes of Billings, nine grandchildren, Leinie, Gabriel, Stormie, Gideon, Micah, Kylee and Clair Hughes, and Addyson and Amiah Berkram, and twenty-one nieces and nephews, Denae, Bryce and Brandon (Vanessa) Kauffman, Travis (Dara), Orrin (Chantel), Carson (Jayce), Carter, Zachariah, Joshua, Josiah, Abigail, Alisha, and Amelia Hughes, Jacquelyn (Eric) Anderson, Lexi (Thomas) Hougard, Russell, Ryan (Rochelle) and Steven (Summer), and Madison Inches, Rachel (Joshua) Flaningan, and Laura (Zac) Beckner. Nolan will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.

Paddy made a visit to New York City. He was patiently waiting and watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted, “Okay, pedestrians.” Then he’d allow the traffic to pass. He’d done this several times, and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk. After the cop had shouted, ‘Pedestrians!’ for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, “Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?”

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. The balding man then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying them all. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asks the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer.”

So these three priests are out to lunch. One priest goes off about his problem with bats at his church. “I’ve tried everything to get rid of them, they just won’t leave.” The second priest relates to the first, “I know! I’ve tried everything! Cats, spray, noise, light. They just won’t go away!” The third priest says, “Well, I baptized my bats, confirmed them and made them the newest members of my parish... haven’t seen one since.”

A man was suffering from insomnia and went to see a doctor. After a thorough checkup, the doctor declared, “The only remedy for this suffering is not to take tension with you when you go to bed.” The patient replies, “That’s exactly what I have been telling my wife. But she is not prepared to use the guest room.”

Riddle Time with Red

Travels have gone well this month, and I am thankful for your prayers through this time. Many of you have casually or more seriously asked me in recent months about what my plans are for the rest of the year. In the midst of praying about and considering what God’s plans for me are after this initial two year commitment, I came across a quote by CS Lewis that has encouraged me to rest, refocus, and trust God.

Each country has a three-digit code (in the United States it is 981) and a 15-number identification code. Microchipping also works well for shipping pets. Or, should your pet change ownership, it doesn’t need a new chip; it just takes a little paperwork to transfer the registration number. “Anything you consider pet quality can be microchipped,” Dr. Smith explained. That even includes horses and iguanas. There is a rabies clinic in Fort Peck on Saturday, April 5th from 10:00-11:30 a.m., and microchipping will be available as well.
