Harmony Day Celebrated Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.

Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on

many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.

Deputy News Uniforms

It has been pleasing to see so many students wearing the new uniform and following the correct process if they are out of uniform by collecting a slip in the morning. As the weather starts to cool off we would like to remind families and students that hoodies are not part of our uniform or acceptable to wear to school and students should be wearing our school jumpers. The uniform has changed with boys expected to wear grey pants and girls either blue slacks or skirts with blue stockings. If you require any support to get the correct uniform please see the Front Office for student assistance.

Old Library Reopening and Upgrade Project

Last Thursday we had a meeting to discuss what we would like the Library to look like in the future which is one of our school projects for the next planning cycle from 2018-2020. It was great to see staff, parents and interested community members attend this meeting. If you would like to be involved please contact me at the school.

This Monday 26th March will see the old Library reopen after the vandalism from last year. The Library team of Jill Jones and Jenny Cattanach have been very well supported by Janine Oakley to get the Library ready for student access. We will be holding a reopening BBQ on Monday from 5.00pm which will be followed by a tour of F Block and the Library as well as the Parent Information Session on Stymie from 5.30pm.

Parent Teacher Evenings

We held our first Parent Teacher Evening on Tuesday 20th March for parents and carers of Year 7 and Year 12 students. It was great to see so many parents and carers attend to discuss the progress of their children. Our next one will be held on Tuesday 10th April starting at 4.00pm and running until 6.30pm for students in Year 10 and Year 11. This will also be done through the online booking system.

Year 12 HSIE Sydney Excursion 2018 Business Studies & Society and Culture

After an early start on Friday morning (2nd March), Mr

Kingsley and Miss Hill took the Year 12s on their yearly train

journey to Sydney. The students were involved in a number of

activities covering areas of the curriculum for Business Studies

and Society & Culture. These included a visit the Nan Tien

Buddhist Temple, the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney

University for a presentation on ‘change management’,

Newtown for marketing, Google Offices, and a smorgasbord

of vegetarian Indian at Govindas in Darlinghurst. Finally, the

students used both the State Library and the Sydney Uni

library to undertake research for their Personal Interest

Projects (PIPs).

Google Offices On Tuesday 6th March, the students undertook a guided tour

of Sydney’s Google Offices. They saw a range of ‘random’

things including a rope swing in reception, scooters to help

get around the building, many cafes and eating areas, a ‘quiet zone’ where workers could curl up

and have a nap if they needed, and of course, a games room – fully equipped with Guitar Hero,

Ping Pong and a pool table! After the guided tour, Google engineers ran a panel where the

students could ask a range of different questions. An awesome place to work indeed!

Nan Tien Buddhist Temple “Nan Tien” in Chinese, literally means

“Paradise of the South”. It is the biggest

Buddhist temple in the Southern

Hemisphere! The students were

greeted at the gate and were taken on

a guided tour through the temples and

gardens. Our tour included an

introduction to Buddhism, a Dharma

talk, origami and a much needed

meditation. Later, the students took a

small hike to the top of the hill where

each student ‘gonged’ the Gratitude

Bell.

The experience gave the students a

deeper understanding of cultures and

beliefs; a foundation to their study of

the unit Beliefs and Ideologies. We all

felt peace and harmony after

connecting with this ancient belief

system and the experience has put the students in a positive frame of mind leading up to the

HSC.

The students were an absolute pleasure to take away as usual!

2018 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA)

Friday 16th March was the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. It’s a day of action that brings together approximately two million students from 4575 schools nationwide to deliver a powerful message that bullying and violence are never okay. This annual day is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and encourages all students to ‘take a stand together’ against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond.

Cybersafety for Parents

Cybersafety sessions are often structured around how you can help your child, and what a child should not be doing on social media. This, however, is about you. When you comment on a public post, you are often engaging with complete strangers. Depending on the discussion you are entering into you may encounter people you wouldn’t invite into your home, or talk to at a party. You certainly wouldn’t tell these people when and where you went on holiday, how old your children are, their names, where they go to school, where you work, the area you live and what kind of stuff you own? You would be careful in real life, so why not online? Risks to your children Further to this, when you comment on your schools Facebook or Instagram page – you are publicly stating you have an association with the school. That means you could have a child there. Depending on the nature of the post you respond to you may confirm this fact. Should someone click on your name, what sort of profile will they find? Have you just revealed too much about your family? Parents, most of the security on your accounts is not as strong as it should be. Think about what can happen when you geotag a photo of your child into their school and then have a public Instagram or Facebook account. We see this a lot during school awards ceremonies, first day of school and at other special events. Think about this scenario. Someone who doesn't have a child's best interests at heart happens to be driving past the school, they pull over and search the name of the school and see photos of your child

that you have geotagged to the school. They click on your name and go straight to your account because your Instagram is not set to private or your Facebook isn't as private as it could be. Then, that stranger could understand everything about your life and therefore be very convincing to your child if they see them walk out of the school and say to them “Mum told me to pick you up” think about it if your child says how do you know my Mum? They could answer with a whole lot of information about your life based on what you are posting. Right down to where you last went on holidays and the name of the dog. Also, please be aware when you are taking photos at your child's school and posting them there may be kids in protective custody in the background of the image, and you could unwillingly put them at risk. Also if you take photos of your child with their friends always make sure you have permission from the parents of the other children before you post pictures of their kids online. We all ask our kids to keep their accounts set to private…time to lead by example. If parents have any questions please get in touch: [email protected] or check out the link www.safeonsocial.com

Careers News

Ex Student Career Spotlight

Name: Drew Pemberton

Year left Bellingen High School: 2011

Current Job Title: Tactical Paramedic with the London Ambulance Service

Subjects studied in Years 11/12: Year 12: PDHPE, Maths General,

Society and Culture, Biology, English Advance

Year 11: Metalwork, Chemistry

Inspirations: I feel like many people graduating from high school, I didn't have a set plan coming into my final years. I had a general idea that I wanted to work in a career I could help people, and enjoyed aspects of study surrounding human sciences. I also felt then, as I do now, that I didn't want to work in a monotonous job, stuck in an office, repeating the same activities day in, day out. It was when we had a local paramedic teach first aid in PDHPE I first considered it as a career choice. I spoke with many local paramedics, and an excitement and goal of pursuing this as a career was instilled.

Challenges: I recall in high school, every week felt like a differing challenge, up to and including the HSC. Looking back now, I see these were small issues, and very important at helping me learn and grow.

Career pathway since leaving school: Once I left BHS, I studied a Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, at the time, this was only one of two universities offering this type of course in NSW. After three years of study, I graduated with multiple job offers both domestically and abroad, including; NSW, Victoria, QLD, New Zealand and London. I chose to peruse my career in London, making the decision to move abroad, having the opportunity to travel whilst I work (right now, I'm writing this on a plane back from Prague where I enjoyed my last four rest days). London is both the biggest and the busiest ambulance service in the world, regularly covering over 6000 emergency calls

daily compared to WA Ambulance Service which covers 4500 per week, so experience comes very quickly. Within my first year, I began mentoring paramedic students and new start ambulance technicians. Soon after I began working as a single responder on a rapid response car, being only dispatched to London’s sickest patients. As of 2018 I have started a new role with London ambulance as a tactical paramedic. In this role, I continue working in my single responder role, but have additional training in current threats to national security, ballistic protection use and have completed extensive training with counter terrorism firearms police officers. This training allows me to access incident warm zones when wearing my ballistics armour with firearms police to treat casualties at events including the Westminster Bridge and London Bridge terrorist attacks.

Advice to current students: Whilst high school is a great time, and it can be very easy to procrastinate, you should always look ahead, as some hard work whilst at high school can set you up for life. With this as well it is important to not get discouraged if you do not receive the marks you hoped for at the end of your HSC, there are many other ways to get into your preferred course or career. Listen to your teachers, they are passionate about what they do. All of them at some point have been through school, and university and are a wealth of knowledge waiting to help you. For those considering a career within an ambulance service, I couldn't recommend it enough. Being able to help people in their most intimate time of need is a real honour. Whilst I have seen some of the worst the world has to offer, I have also seen the ensuing out pouring of compassion. From delivering babies, to holding the hand of dying elderly patients, to feeling the increasing strength grow to bounding of a patients pulse who moments prior was in cardiac arrest, I truly do believe I have the best job in the world.

CAPA News Visiting Artist Program Term 1 2018

Years 9, 10 and 11 Visual Arts students are participating in the above

program. This involves demonstrations and practical workshops delivered by

local art therapist and counsellor Marg Coutts.

In Marg’s words: “These days I work mostly in

textiles. I use traditional embroidery techniques

in non-traditional ways. I was brought up being

taught to hem rough edges so they wouldn't

fray. But I love frayed edges, so I no-longer

hem them - instead I like to encourage them!

My art is influenced by the forms, patterns and

cycles of nature as well as by a sense of

sustainability. I think there are enough things in

the world. So I like to use discarded materials

- old fabric, found objects from the footpath. I

also like the experience of giving new life to

something which is in the process of decay. I

have exhibited in Hobart, Sydney and Bellingen.

I have a B.A. in Art History and Popular

Culture, a Dip.Ed. in Visual Arts and an M.A in

Art Therapy.”

There is no cost for this program, and all materials and equipment will be

provided. Let’s get creative!!

Down at the Ag Plot Year 9 Agriculture Chicken Project

Wow! What a project! Finally, the

chickens have hatched out of the incubators and the cute fluffy chickens

are here for everyone to enjoy. There are

many breeds, lots of colours, and many

sizes.

The students will monitor their growth

and development over the next month, and try and work out whether their

chicken is a boy or a girl.

Most will be for sale for $7 at the end of the term. Just now though, caring for the

cute fluffy chicks is enough.

Year 10 Agriculture Cattle Project

Year 10 Agriculture students are

anxiously waiting for Buggaree Bubbly

Beam (Bubbles) and Buggaree Emma (Emma) to have their calves. Both are

now due. Bell-Hy Lollipop (Lolli) is due to

calve in the first week of April.

Agriculture students and the Cattle Team

have been busy washing and grooming

the cattle for the upcoming shows. The shows are Wauchope, Macksville, Coffs

Harbour and our very own Bellingen

Show.

Remember, anyone from Year 7 to Year 12 can join the Cattle

Show Team. Just show up at the cattle yards on Monday,

Wednesday or Friday at 8:00am, and be ready to learn, and work.

BHS Poultry off to the Sydney

Royal Easter Show Over the last few weeks the Poultry Show Team, and Year 9

Agriculture and Year 11 Primary Industries classes, have been

busy preparing the show birds for the show.

This involved a lot of bird baths, nails cleaned, drying with towels, and calming the birds down so the judges are happy to handle the

birds.

The Bell-Hy show breed are our lovely Rhode Island Reds. Also

travelling to Sydney will be a crossbred laying team, pure bred laying team, White Wyandotte and

Aracauna Bantams, and Gold

Spangled Hamburgs.

Bell-Hy will also present six different

types of eggs in the show.

If you are travelling to the show, you

might just spot a Bellingen High Champion.

Sheep Now Officially Named

All of the Bell-Hy sheep now have a nametag. The students are

finding it much easier to bond with Nia, Molly and GiGi, instead of

sheep 3:15, 2:14 and 5:12.

The entire Bell-Hy Dorper Stud Sheep flock, now 10 ewes, 1 ram,

and 4 replacement ewe lambs, have their photo on the back wall of

D1, the agriculture classroom. The photo wall will allow us to visually record the flock’s family tree.

The lambs are due in July, at the start of Term 3.

Things we need

If you have any have any old towels, we

would love them - we use them for washing

poultry for the shows. Also, any

pots would be useful.

Chickens for sale!

The Year 9 Chicken Project chickens will be for sale at the end of the term. Most are prolific egg layer breeds.

We have white, black and brown chickens for sale, at the bargain price of just $7 each. They will be available for pick up during the last week of term.

Contact Amanda Lockman or Mr Boyd, or a note is okay.

Sport News NSW Combined High Schools State

Tennis Championships

Darcy Cronin in Year 9 was selected again

this year to compete in the state high

schools tennis championships held in

Parramatta in early March, representing

the NSW North Coast and Bellingen High

School.

Darcy competed in the junior (under 16)

group along with 70 other players from all

over NSW. The competition was fierce

but Darcy was pleased with his playing as

he improved considerably on his

performance from last year. Although

Darcy didn't come away with the winner's

trophy, he played some great matches and

came away with some new lessons learned

to take into his next competition.

Swimmers off to NSW

State Championships

Fourteen swimmers from Bellingen High School travelled

to Murwillumbah to compete at the North Coast

Championships. Of those fourteen, eight qualified to

compete at the NSW State Championships at Homebush

in early April.

Yasmin Ball (right) qualified in five individual events and

Rebecca Hodgson in three individual events so both will

have plenty of swimming in the Homebush pool.

Both girls are also in the relay teams that qualified in their respective age

groups. The 12 years girls and 15 years girls relay teams are excited to have

the opportunity to swim at Homebush and are training hard to do their best.

This is the biggest group of swimmers to head to State Championships in over

16 years.

Footballers Kick

Three girls from Bellingen High School have been selected in the North Coast

team to compete in the NSWCHS Open Girls Football Championships to be

held in Wollongong in early May. Jordan Healy, Emily Ruming and Willow Neal

displayed superior skills to be selected in the North Coast team after trialling

against the best football players on the North Coast at Port Macquarie on a

hot Friday 16th March. Another player, Hannah Watt declined selection due

to Year 12 study commitments. In the boys’ trials, Tom Rixon was named

first shadow reserve and could be called up to participate in the Open Boys

NSWCHS Championships. Keep on kicking!!

Netball News

Last week was a busy week for netball! Our senior girls competed in the

round robin at Coffs Central, winning 2 games against Dorrigo and Coffs

Harbour High Schools but unfortunately didn't progress to the finals. Our 2

junior girls’ teams battled the heat and humidity during a Gala Day in Coffs

Harbour against much more experienced teams. However, the girls managed

to win a few games, showed vast improvement and great sportsmanship -

everyone enjoyed the day. We would like to thank our umpires Willow and

Did you know?

A shrimp's heart is in its head. People say "Bless you" when you sneeze because when you sneeze, your heart stops for a

In every episode of Seinfeld there is a Superman somewhere. If you went out into space, you would explode before you suffocated because there's no air
