From the Deputy Principal

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their

potential, and increase their career and life options. Schools in partnerships with parents

are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally

responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as part of their duty

of care, record and monitor part and whole day absences. As part of this it is important

that students arrive to school on time that is before 9.00 am. As a school we value the

importance of students being on time to every class and if there are issues with attendance

we will work with families to address any concerns. We are about to review our

attendance policy and will be seeking input from families as part of this process.

We are very excited to be a part of an event on Wednesday 13 November called “A Night

with the Blokes”. It’s run by an organisation called “Tomorrow Man” who have received

great reviews from communities, sporting groups and schools for facilitating casual but

honest conversations about the current ‘man-code’ and what tomorrows “man” might

look like. At the event, we (men and lads) will get to explore how we can look after

ourselves, our mates and our families better, whilst carving out our own version of the

Aussie man.

The event will be starting at Maam Gaduying (Meeting Place in Bellingen near the Library

from 6.30pn) and then moving over to Bello Memorial Hall from 7pm to 9pm, this is a

free event. Hopefully you can come along and support this event.

Students wearing the correct uniform has certainly improved recently and we would like

to congratulate and thank those students who wear the correct uniform every day. The

next focus will be on wearing the correct bottom half with shorts that are the school

colours of navy blue or grey or the school skirt, and that they are of an appropriate length.

If you require assistance for uniform please contact the school on 66551315.

Dorrigo Show Report

The Cattle Show Team is busy preparing for Dorrigo in two weeks’ time. We will be taking

11 head of cattle, our biggest group so far this year.

Traveling will be our four young

heifer calves, all born this year and

Bell-Hy Penny, who is our only

heifer calf from last year. These

heifers will form the basis for the

Bell-Hy Red Poll herd for many years

to come.

The four Square Meaters will also be

entered into the show, as well as

Pumba and Quinton, our two Red

Poll steers.

The Bellingen High School Team travels up on Friday morning, the 22nd November. On

the Friday, everyone will be busy washing and preparing the cattle for the show ring.

There will be judging, parading and a heifer competition on the Friday.

On Saturday, our Red Polls and Square Meater cattle will be judged.

Please come and watch our cattle team at the Dorrigo Show, and of course the rodeo, on

Friday night.

Share the Dignity

Christmas Campaign

Fill a handbag with a Christmas

gift for women and girls in need

#itsinthebag2019 will run from Friday November 22

to Saturday December 7.

Donate to our Christmas collection @itsinthebag.

You have the power to make life better for a woman or girl experiencing homelessness or

poverty this Christmas. Provide pads and tampons, personal hygiene products and

everyday luxuries to homeless women, women at risk or women experiencing domestic

violence.

It’s simple. First of all, choose a handbag in good condition that you no longer use. Then,

fill it with items that would make a woman feel special, pop in a thoughtful note or

Christmas card and show her someone cares. Show her that she matters because everyone

deserves to feel that way.

Next time you’re at the shops, collect a few items for your Christmas handbag. No matter

how you celebrate Christmas with your family, this will be the most meaningful and

appreciated gift you give this year.

Why it’s in the Bag?

It’s In The Bag Christmas charity campaign ideas came to us when we realized that women

in crisis will put the needs of others before themselves, whatever the time of year. And

we wanted to do something that would give these women a little happiness at Christmas.

There are 85 000 homeless women who need your help this Christmas. Many have fled

domestic violence or experienced extreme poverty. We want to make them feel special.

You can help, it’s simple and makes a big difference in a woman’s life.

What’s in the Bag?

The three types of bag we collect are:

Please hand in your donations to the collection boxes in the Library, Front Office or

Careers Room.

Favourite school memory

So many to choose from! Probably my favourite was Mr Parkes in the Teachers vs Year 12 Cricket Game (can't remember what year it was) which took place every lunch for 2

weeks, smashing a 6, by putting the ball through the study room window in the old

library (now the Science Block)...6 and out and had to explain to the principal who broke the window! It was a very animated conversation which Mr Parkes couldn't win.

Challenges along the way

Leaving the area 2 days after my final HSC exam and moving to Sydney to find work, it was hard; a new area, friends, colleagues and a new job!

Advice to current students

You will never stop learning, be prepared that you will make mistakes, it's how you overcome them that makes you stronger. You can’t get the rainbow without the rain!

Drought Awareness

It was lovely to see ex-student Cooper Kearsley back at Bellingen High! Cooper is studying

K-12 teaching at UNE, Armidale and is deeply concerned about drought affected families

particularly in the Tamworth/Quirindi area. Cooper came along to our year meetings this

week to talk to students about just how tough life can be on the land and to spread

awareness. Hopefully we will organise some fundraising events to support Cooper's

fundraising efforts.

From the TAS Faculty

Jamie has finally done it! A year of hard work has resulted in his display cabinet being

completed. Jamie epitomises what can be achieved in Industrial Technology with efficient

planning and a desire to reach identified goals. Jamie has always had a clear vision of what

he wanted to make for his Industrial Technology Life Skills Major Project. Now he has a

furniture item that he can look at with pride for many years to come. In the career of a

teacher, there are certain students who are impossible to forget. Jamie is certainly one of

those. His positive approach to school and his friendly nature have been memorable

highlights in the 3 years I have taught Jamie in the woodwork room.

Well done on

completing Year 12

North Coast Champions!

The 16 years and 14 years girls Futsal teams played at the North Coast Championships on

Thursday 31st October after both earning Champions of Mid North Coast two weeks ago.

This means they had to play the champions of the other 3 North Coast Zones. As this

competition is a knockout competition Mid North Coast winners have to take on Lower

North Coast winners while Far North Coast need to take on Richmond – Clarence. The

winners of these games then play each other in the North Coast Final.

The 14’s girls had to play Melville High School (Kempsey) first in a game they dominated

from start to finish. The girls were putting shots on goal right from the start but it was only

the trusty boot of Summer Hogan who could convert the opportunities giving us a 3 -0

lead before Pixie Hill slotted one in shortly before half time. The second half was much

the same, however, goals were shared around with Tahahni Berger 1, Pixie Hill 2, Summer

Hogan 1 and Lulu McGrath 1. The final score of 9-1 could have blown out to many more,

but full credit to the Melville team who never gave up.

The North Coast final was against Mullumbimby High who won their first game

convincingly. This proved to be a much tighter affair with opportunities by both teams

shut down early. The Bellingen defence of Indiana Brodbeck and Tahahni Berger proved

solid and goal keeper, Jamika McAulay-Earnest remained strong throughout. The attack

at the other end penetrated with Pixie Hill 2 and Indiana 1 from the back sealing the deal

3-0. This made them North Coast Champions! These girls are heading to the Australian

Champion of Champions from the 8th to 10th November so this was a great lead in to that

competition.

The 16s girls had it a lot harder meeting Camden Haven High in their first round. Camden

Haven got up 2-0 early taking advantage of the rule allowing keepers to throw full length

of the court, which is no longer played in most competitions. When the girls adjusted they

came back with Ashley Sticker displaying her class slotting in 2 goals. The game was tied

up and Camden Haven scored again and Ashley again equalised. As the game was nearing

the end the Bellingen girls were on top peppering the goal. As luck would have it Camden

Haven scored on the counter attack and full time was called with the girls missing out 3-

4. As Byron Bay High School pulled out only the day before the Bello girls got a shortened

game against Alstonville High who was to play Camden Haven in the final. The Bellingen

team had no problems defeating Alstonville 5-0.

Volleyballers Rule the Beach

The Mid North Coast Beach Volleyball Knockout day was held at the Jetty foreshores on

Tuesday 29th October in fine, sunny conditions. This version of the game sees teams of

only 4 players play on the same size court as normal volleyball with sand making

movement more difficult. Due to the soft landing dives are a plenty and the game is fun,

fast and furious.

There were 4 divisions being contested; 15 years and under boys, 15 years and under girls,

Open Boys and Open Girls. Bellingen High had teams in all 4 divisions. The competition

runs as a knockout and winners on the day progress to the North Coast Final to be held

in Coffs on 19th November.

The Open girls played first and they were up against CHEC (with a few ex-Bello). The girls

started slowly but once they got in to it, worked together to take out both sets and win

2-0. Their next game, the Zone Final was against Coffs Harbour High who had home

ground advantage but despite this was no match for the Bellingen girls who again took

the game 2-0.

Emily Ruming taking control Mia Warman tips one over the net

The 15s boys team had their first match against Orara High and displayed some class to

win 2-0 which put them in the Final against Coffs Harbour High. Just like the Open girls

the boys dominated and took the game 2-0.

The Open boys started strongly against CHEC winning the first set. However, the Year 10

boys lost concentration losing the second set. It was 1-1 and a hard fought third set went

the way of CHEC (the eventual winners) which put the boys out of the competition.

Djarrah Clarke blocking effectively Josh Perry putting his body on the

line to save the ball

The 15s girls team remained undefeated on the

day winning their matches both 2-0. This young

team played well together and with all bar one

eligible to play in this age division next year the

future is bright.

This means out of the 4 divisions contested the

Bellingen High School teams won 3 and will be playing in the North Coast finals in 2

weeks. More training on our Beach Volleyball court!
