across the province are being invited to open their gates and share their story as a host for Alberta Open Farm Days this summer.

Registration to host has been made easier through an online form available at www.albertafarmdays.com. The application deadline to host this year is on April 30.

“As a farmer, I know first-hand that there are many experiences out there that are worth sharing and that are interesting to visitors. Tour-ism can help strengthen and diversify Alberta’s economy, and by telling your story and participating in Alberta Open Farm Days, you are helping to build ag-tourism in the province,” said Maureen Kubinec, Alberta Minister of Culture and Tourism.

The third annual Open Farm Days is on Aug. 22 and 23. It offers visitors a fun way to experience rural life. People can enjoy farm-to-table culinary events on the Saturday and free admission to farm tours across the province on the Sunday.

“Farmers feed cities, but few of us really know about the innovation and entrepreneurship behind Alberta’s producers and agricultural businesses. I encour-age our agricultural community to participate in Open Farm Days to showcase how rural Alberta can grow its economy through traditional agriculture, ag-tourism and agriculture-based businesses,” added Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“I believe events like this foster the opportunity for urban Albertans to get back on the land and see where their food comes from. That in turn has many positive social impacts,” said Takota Coen, of Grass Roots Family Farm within Camrose County.

Open Farm Days is a partnership with Ag for Life,

Alberta Culture and Tourism, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Alberta Associa-tion of Agricultural Societies and Travel Alberta.

Last year there were 61 host farms and 17 culinary events with close to 7,000 visits. There was more than $40,000 in on-farm sales during the event.

Alberta Open Farm Days is about farmers and ranchers

inviting their urban and rural neighbours to stop in for a visit to share stories, see demonstra-tions and learn more about the farmers who grow their food.

Some rural communities will be hosting a series of farm to table culinary events that will be held around the province on Aug. 22, using Alberta farm products will open their gates Aug. 23.

Rumors of Rural Electrifi cation Association (REA) sales are swirling. In the midst of that chaos we invite you to take a moment to refl ect on the true value of the REA and the options member-owners have. REAs are unique to Alberta – providing electricity to 4% of the population and serving approximately 47,740 member-owners. Farmers organized REA cooperatives to bring electricity to the rural areas, when Investor Owned Utilities (IOU) refused because it was too costly. Today, REA assets have gained value, REAs are becoming viable competitors, and IOUs are offering to purchase REAs.

Obviously, the IOU sees the REA as a valuable asset or they would not be making the offers they are. Let’s set aside the cheque you are being offered and consider the value of your REA and what you stand to lose if you sell.

What are your options?Attend the meetings your REA is holding and vote. Your REA can be sold without much input. If the majority of those in attendance at a meeting pass a resolution that the number of attendees constitutes a quorum, then it is a quorum no matter whether fi ve or ten people show up. Once the quorum has been

established, it only requires two-thirds of those present to vote in favour of a sale to have it proceed. The quorum is critical at the Special Meeting your

Board is required to call.

When your Board calls a Special Meeting of the membership to vote on the

sale of your REA, show up and place your vote. If you can attend only one meeting and want to make a difference, you need to be at the Special Meeting. Call your Board and fi nd out when that is scheduled.

Ask your Board what other alternatives are available to the REA besides selling to an IOU. Your Board is required to act in the best interests of the membership – hold them accountable to that. If you are struggling to keep a small REA going, look around and fi nd a neighbour REA

who is willing and able to lend a hand. Amalgamation is a viable and proven alternative to selling out to the IOU. Remember that the lure of the cheque is temporary. The money will be taxed, the remainder will be spent or reinvested, and that will be the end of a long proud heritage in rural Alberta. Once the money is gone, you and future generations will be at the mercy of an electricity industry controlled by two large multi-nationals whose primary aim is to make a profi t. The choices are yours – exercise your options, ask hard questions, and demand alternatives.

What will you loseif you sell?• A multi-million dollar asset will

disappear from your community forever.

• Local control of an essential service will be lost to a multi-national.

• You will lose infl uence or recourse when future costs are determined.

• An independent voice advocating for a fair and equitable industry will be lost.

• All future rural economic advantages of your REA will be sacrifi ced.

What makes your REA valuable?1. You own the assets of a multi-million dollar

cooperative. Multiply your purchase offer by the number of members in your REA – that’s the minimum your asset is worth to the IOU, if you simply assumed one service per member.

2. You have democratic member control of your REA. Every member-owner in a cooperative has one vote, and his or her vote counts when critical decisions, such as a sale, are made.

3. You benefi t from economic participation. Your REA cooperative operates as a non-profi t, reinvesting savings, maintaining fair rates, and providing safe and effi cient electricity service.

4. You provide a fi nancial comparison for electricity costs for all Albertans. Your REA is part of the last line of defense against an oligopoly in the Alberta electricity industry.

5. You contribute to rural economic sustainability. Your REA is a member of a greater cooperative movement that values ownership and keeps money in the community. AFREA

Running through a mental list of Japanese icons and culture, one might think of: cherry blos-soms, Mt. Fuji, sushi, technology, a country rich with traditions. What else comes to mind? Did you think about Japan’s national sport? The almighty SUMO!

Before moving to Kamifurano I was aware of sumo. I knew that it was popular in Japan and that the wrestlers are extremely large. I knew that the wrestlers wear some sort of loincloth as they chal-lenge one another. I understood that the goal of sumo is to have your opponent exit the ring before you do. But that’s really all that I knew. I had never watched a match; not even on TV or online, so when I moved here, watching a live sumo match was some-thing that was on my wish list.

I tracked down an English website that told me when and where the professional matches take place throughout the year. Tokyo is the closest city to Kamifurano to watch sumo, so I booked a flight and headed there at the end of January. A Japanese friend and I went to the match together. It was great to go with someone who grew up with sumo as part of his native culture. He was able to explain many things to me about the sport. Surprisingly enough, it was the first time that my friend ever watched sumo live as well. He told me that he always thought about going but just never made a plan to actually go.

Penalties increased for distracted drivingBy Dan Jensen

It’s going to cost you more if police catch you using a cell phone, read-ing, adjusting your GPS unit or fussing over your makeup while driving.

A private mem-ber’s bill (Traffic Safety Amendment Act) that will increase fines for distract-ed driving from $172 to $250 and impose a penal-ty of three demerit points was given third and final

reading in the Alberta leg-islature March 23.

Distracted driving is, according to Alberta Transportation, respon-sible for 20 to 30 per cent of all the collisions in the province.

“You don’t have to look too hard to see when it is happening,” said Const. Adam Belanger, member of the Camrose Police Ser-vice. “When driver’s are sitting at a green light and

not moving you know they are distracted.”

Camrose Police Ser-vice issued 88 tickets for distracted driving from Jan. 1 of this year to March 17.

“People have been warned, yet they are still doing it,” said Const. Belanger.

Drivers are considered to be distracted if they take their eyes off the road to do something else.

“I have given tickets to people who thought they were okay because they had the phone in their laps as opposed to up to their ear,” said Const. Belanger. “In a way that caused them to be even more dis-tracted because they were looking down in their laps instead of the road.”

Alberta was just one of three provinces in Canada (along with Ontario and Nunavut) that didn’t have

demerits for distracted driving. Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labra-dor and Nova Scotia Driv-ers receive four demerits.

The fine for distracted driving is the highest in the Northwest Territories, at $322.

Anyone who feels the need to make a phone call or send a text while oper-ating a vehicle should sim-ply pull to the side of the road.

8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily during a 15-day tournament. We were fortunate to secure tickets for the second last day of the tournament. A typical day starts with lower division wrestlers and fin-ishes off with the high divi-sion wrestlers. Each match begins with the players car-rying out traditions and ritu-als. I asked my friend what the players were throwing into the air as part of their rituals. He told me that they throw salt into the ring as a way to purify it.

An actual match usu-ally lasts mere seconds. The pre-match process was much longer than the battle itself. But when a match lasts for an unexpected length of time the audience is exhilarated and the excitement in the stadium can be felt through-out. We saw a few match-es that might have lasted around 10 seconds. There was one match that went on for so long that the referee stopped the players so that they could take a quick break before they proceeded to fin-ish the match. Each player’s positions were marked before they paused the match. Once we’d realized how quickly a match ends we felt extremely lucky to have seen those few longer matches.

I’ll always remember watching the first row spec-tators move quickly as a sumo wrestler came flying out of the ring and landed exactly where they were sit-ting. The ringside seats are the most expensive and give you the best view but you are at risk of injury at any given moment. If you ever get the chance to see a sumo match I highly recommend it.

The Rose City Square Dance Club’s 35th Square Dance Jamboree, held on Sunday, March 8, at Mir-ror Lake Centre, was well attended by dancers from all across central Alberta.

Besides the great exer-cise, fun and friendship that is enjoyed by square dancers during such an event, a Jamboree gives all dancers an opportunity to meet new people and experience dancing to the music and cues of many other square dance call-ers.

Besides our regular callers, Allen Zwierschke from Holden and Norman Demeule from Ohaton, six other callers participated in the event. Also there to address and welcome our visitors were MLA Verlyn

Olson, Deputy Mayor Max Lindstrand and Camrose County councillor Trevor Miller.

An open house invi-tation was extended to the public to watch the dancing while enjoying refreshments. Dancing for almost 90 people occurred between 2 and 5 p.m., fol-lowed by a hearty pot luck supper.

Next fall, on Oct. 2 and Oct 9, the Rose City Square Dance Club will be hosting two other open house events where visi-tors will have and oppor-tunity to join us for a refreshment and observe the mechanics of square dancing. Ages 12 and up are welcome to join.

ern Society will present sto-ry theatres on Sir William MacKenzie and the “Last Spike” at Calvary Pentecos-tal Church April 17 and 18.

The performances will get underway starting at 7 p.m.

“They (the story the-atres) are series of vignettes I have put together using information from the book The Railway King of Cana-da: Sir William MacKenzie, 1849-1923 by R.B. Flem-ing,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station chair and Canadian Northern Soci-ety board member Glenys Smith.

“The goal is to enter-tain, but also to educate people about our history.”

The story theatres will involve seven actors, some of whom will be playing more than one role.

“A few of them are from the Canadian Northern Society,” said Smith. “All will be wearing the clothes of the day.”

Large multi-media screens on each side of the stage will show photos that will serve as the background for each of the vignettes.

“We are so fortunate to have the Calvary Pente-costal facility,” said Smith. “The lighting and every-thing else is going to be just perfect.”

Scottish bagpipers will perform both the start at the show and at the inter-mission, which will feature the special treat of Scottish oatmeal cookies with date filling.

The story theatres will provide the chance to meet R.B. Fleming, as well as MacKenzie’s great great grand neice and his great great grand nephews, who will be speaking at the end of each show.

Sir William Mackenzie was an empire builder and entrepreneur who, along with Sir Donald Mann, built the Canadian North-ern Railway.

“The Canadian North-ern Railway, which was completed with the pound-ing of the last spike near Basque, B.C. approximately 90 km west of Kamloops on Jan. 23, 1915, was a unique Canadian enterprise,” said Canadian Northern Soci-ety vice-president Leslie S. Kozma. “The company evolved from a Manitoba short line in 1896 to a sys-tem of over 9,000 miles in seven provinces in 1917. Mackenzie and Mann were dynamic individuals with a strong belief in the vast economic potential of west-ern Canada. Despite their valiant efforts, the Cana-dian Northern Railway fell

victim to challenging eco-nomic circumstances – over expansion, recession, First World War and spiralling costs of construction – that resulted in its national-ization by the Dominion Government of Canada in December, 1918.”

The Railway King of Canada: Sir William MacKenzie, 1849-1923 was written by Fleming over a period of 10 years.

“It was hard for him to gather information because there was so little about MacKenzie that was actually written down,” said Smith.

The book is a fascinat-ing narrative of what can be accomplished when peo-ple work together.

“MacKenzie was very driven to get the Canadian Northern Railway across Canada and gave his life to do it,” said Smith. “It is amazing to think of all that he did despite the dif-ficult times and events.

“The railway would have survived had the First World War happened and caused much of the funding from England to be re-directed to the war effort.”

One hundred years after the Last Spike, the legacy of Mackenzie and Mann endures.

“The Canadian North-ern Railway was respon-sible for the development of hundreds of communities in western Canada,” said Kozma. “Many of its routes today are integral to Cana-da’s modern transportation system.”

The story theatres will be just two of the high-lights of an action packed weekend, which will also include tours of the Cam-rose Heritage Railway Station and Park, and an escorted trip to Meeting Creek to see both the third class Canadian Northern Station, which has been restored to the 1940s era, and the restored 1930 ele-vator.

“Take a walk along the Linear Trail on the old abandoned railway line and watch for his-toric landmarks and migrating birds,” said Kozma.

The Canadian North-ern Society has been active in the preservation of Canadian Northern Rail-way heritage since 1986. The society operates and preserves heritage railway stations in Camrose, Meet-ing Creek and Big Valley.

a report of a dirt bike being operated on the Mirror Lake trail system. Patrols were made and the dirt bike was located and stopped. The 19-year-old male driver was issued a violation ticket under the provisions of the City of Camrose bylaw for operating an off-highway vehicle in a public park.

March 29Over the weekend,

police received two reports of shoplifting from a west end department store. Video surveillance has been obtained from the business and an investi-gation continues into this matter.

March 28A 41-year-old male

motorist was stopped and checked in the evening hours. Police gathered grounds to believe the male was in the possession of narcotics and a subsequent search led to the seizure of a quantity of marihuana. He was charged with possessing a controlled substance and is slated to appear in provincial court on these matters.

While protecting patient care, Budget 2015 will mark the first sub-stantial step in 20 years to bring down Alberta’s health spending toward levels in the rest of Canada.

Alberta Health will spend $18.9 billion on a consolidated basis in 2015-16, a reduction of $159 mil-lion or 0.8 per cent from the 2014-15 forecast. This budget marks the first time in 20 years the province has reduced overall health spending.

“Alberta’s health spending is out of line with other provinces,” said Ste-phen Mandel, Minister of Health. “This budget uses a calm, reasoned approach, which will protect patient care as we cut excess spending and find efficien-cies. We will work harder to improve the value Alber-tans receive for their tax dollars as we move health spending closer to the rest of the country.”

Reductions were deter-mined through these prin-ciples: Protecting patient and population needs; Reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and inefficient spending; Improving the value Albertans receive

from health care spending; and Making the health sys-tem more responsive and improving quality.

Health funding alloca-tions in 2015-16 include: Alberta Health Services – $13.4 billion, a decrease of $286 million or 2.1 per

cent; Physician compensa-tion and development – $4.6 billion, an increase of $119 million or 2.7 per cent; and Drugs and supplemental health benefits – $1.8 bil-lion, an $8 million reduc-tion from the forecast.

Changes in Budget

2015 include: Identifying operational efficiencies by conducting benchmark-ing reviews through AHS at the largest acute care hospitals, as well as at AHS support services and corporate services; Absorbing a significant number of wage pres-sures;

Reducing adminis-trative costs within the

department by not fill-ing vacancies; Working with the Alberta Medical Association to implement cost saving strategies while ensuring continued quality patient care, and; Using $75 million in Pri-mary Care Network accu-mulated surpluses to off-set their operational costs for 2015-16.

The “Selfie”My iPad, my iPhone

and my computer are full of them, sent from friends both known and unknown to me; and reposted by perfect (or imperfect) strangers. It seems everyone is into sending and post-ing their most current “selfie”. (For some most current means 20 to 30 such posts every day.)

“This is me with…” Now, “this is me with…” “This is me doing…” Now, “this is me doing…” “This is me doing…with…” Et cetera, ad nauseum.

The central word in all of these self-published and self-promoting “selfies” is “ME.” Frustrated by them all, I want to yell – “Get over yourself!” And still, they just keep coming.

I remember when being selfish was a thing to be avoided, and when not avoided it was a thing for which we were ashamed. Today, it has become a thing to be celebrated (and with the help of social media the celebration goes on … and on…and on…).

My parents worked hard (at least that is how my backside recalls it) to get “me” and “mine” out of my vocabulary, and more importantly, out of my selfish lifestyle. Now, it seems that the world conspires to put these selfish thoughts and self-ish actions back into my vocabulary and into my lifestyle; and the world rewards me when I return that selfishness.

OK, I admit it, I like to be noticed as much as the next guy. I like to be heard. I like to be con-sidered. I like to be appreciated. I like to be rec-ognized. (Oh no! I am more selfish than I thought.)

Look out world, I am about to begin my own barrage of “selfies.” When I can’t do a “selfie” I will “photobomb” someone else’s “selfie” – (how narcissistic can one possibly get?). I will make it your job to advertise me, to amuse me, to advance me and my interests, and to celebrate me. It seems to work for others (based on the number of “selfies” created each day) so now it is my turn. So, get ready to go to work for me – here come my “selfies”.

On the other hand, perhaps if I genuinely turn my interest and my attention to others; if I seek to celebrate the others in my circle of friends and in my circle of influence, both I and the ones I celebrate, appreciate and notice will hopefully become a little less selfish.

Vulnerable Albertans protected in budgetSubmitted

Income supports through the Alberta Seniors Benefit, AISH, child care subsidies for low-income families and other programs are unchanged under the new provincial budget and a new low-interest loan pro-gram will help more seniors stay in their homes.

Seniors and low-income families and individuals in need will continue to have access to safe housing and shelter, and income sup-port. Human Services is maintaining front-line ser-vices and staff for vulner-able Albertans. For seniors, a new low-interest Home

Repair Loan Program will be introduced that is flexible and more accessible to cover the costs of home repairs and modifications.

“From children in pov-erty to our respected seniors, and for all the difficult life challenges that people can face in between, our govern-ment continues to provide caring and compassionate support to Albertans and families in need,” said Pre-mier Jim Prentice.

“We are protecting ser-vices for vulnerable Alber-tans, with support that continues to be among the highest in Canada,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minis-

ter of Human Services. “We are also working to inte-grate programs and servic-es at the regional level, so that decisions are made in the community, closer to the people who depend on our services.”

“Our government will continue to provide seniors with the supports and ser-vices they need to live in dig-nity in the communities they helped build, and we will help ensure that vulnerable Albertans have access to a variety of affordable housing options,” said Jeff Johnson, Minister of Seniors.

nesses and organiza-tions presented $76,000 in annually funded awards to 100 students, $113,500 in endowed awards to 122 students and more than $7,600 in bursaries to 15 stu-dents at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus Community Awards Banquet Feb. 25.

“We have a record number of new annual-ly funded and endowed awards to support our students,” said Augus-tana director of develop-ment and banquet emcee Bonnie Anderson.

“Our awards pro-gram is growing and students are benefitting. The support sets Augus-tana apart and contin-ues to make a big differ-ence for tomorrow.”

Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger told donors that the investments they are making in the education of students is an ongoing source of inspiration and of hope.

“They confirm for me that education is a public good and not just a private good,” said Dr. Berger. “That idea is alive and well here in Camrose and that is certainly a cause for cel-ebration.”

In the years ahead as the students of Augustana become proud graduates and leaders in our respective fields we will remember your gen-erosity and the opportu-nities you have created for us. We will strive to give back in the way those of you in this room have demonstrated.”

Augustana Students’ Association vice-presi-dent of communications Joel Danyluk asked the current students to give back to Augustana after they have graduated.

“I challenge you to give back to another student what you have received and more,” he said. “I believe we should all leave a situation bet-ter off than when we first got here.”

Anderson noted that the Community Awards

Program received a boost last fall with the announcement that a new initiative had been created to invest in stu-dent athletes.

“The university will offer a 50 per cent match each year for five years for new $2,000 awards pledged by donors to create $3,000 annual awards for our Viking athletes,” said Anderson. “With these new awards we will attract talent to earn a U of A Augustana degree while wearing the Viking red and black.”

Augustana is grati-fied with the response that it has received to the program to date.

“Camrose Constable Tyler Bellamy heard about this initiative and got 20 former hockey teammates together who each pledged $100 a year for five years to create an award to honour the memory of a teammate who passed away sudden-ly,” said Anderson. “We have also had a number of individual donors step

up, as well as faculty and staff.”

Dr. Berger noted that just as community mem-bers are making valued investments in Augus-tana students, Augus-tana is making recipro-cal investments in the community and in the region by prioritizing community engagement, volunteerism and com-munity service learning as important parts of a liberal education.

“In the future at Augustana, instead of having advising conver-sations focused narrowly on course selection and program requirements, advisors will work with students on personal-ized and comprehensive four year plans in which from day one they begin to think about how they might practice and test and apply their class-room learning through experiential opportuni-ties like community ser-vice learning, commu-nity based internships, field research or study

overseas,” said Dr. Berg-er.

“Already at Augusta-na we have half as many Community Service Learning placements each year as we have total students enrolled. And each year approx-imately 75 per cent of our graduating students have had at least one Community Service Learning placement dur-ing their undergraduate career. These numbers place us in a leadership position within the Uni-versity of Alberta and across the province of Alberta. But we also know it is not sufficient to focus on numerical measures alone. We need to pay attention to the quality and the value of these experiences, mea-suring the learning out-comes for students and the impact that their work has on the larger community.”

The Community Awards Program was established in 1973 to assist in making post-

secondary studies pos-sible for students with limited resources and to attract students to the then Camrose Luther-an College. The initial committee, comprised of community members and college officials, was charged with the respon-sibility of recruiting gifts from the business com-munity to fund awards. Working with the com-munity, the committee promoted two award funds, the Current Schol-arship Fund, now called Annual Awards, and the Scholarship Foundation, which held the Commu-nity Scholarship Fund and Associated Endow-ments.

The awards program today continues to reflect the vision and goals of the founding members. It is administered through the Development and Student Awards Offices at Augustana in part-nership with the Student Awards Office on the university’s north cam-pus.

Community assists students attending Augustana

Battle River Community Foundation director Brandon Kroeger presented cheques to Sheralyn Dobos, director of the Family Violence Action Society.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants totalling $3,600 to the Family Violence Action Society – Cam-rose and District to assist in the cost of providing counselling services to children exposed to family violence.

The grants were awarded from income earned by the Dave Jacobsen Memorial Fund, the Bob and Mazo O’Riordan Memorial Fund and the Community Fund. The Dave Jacob-sen Memorial Fund was established in 2003 to support proj-ects benefitting youth. The Bob and Mazo O’Riordan Memo-rial Fund was established in 1997 as a donor advised fund that allows the donor to recommend projects to the Foundation for funding. The Community Fund was established in 1997 and allows the Foundation board to select projects throughout the region for grants or to top up grants from other funds.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations in accordance with the wishes of the donors.

Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to support impor-tant programs such as those operated by the Family Violence Action Society – Camrose and District.

We have all heard the dangers of drinking and driv-ing and I honestly believe that we all believe those dangers are real. Why then, do we con-tinue to have and death and injury on our highways due to impaired driving?

Whether or not you realize it or care to admit it, alcohol impairs your ability to make clear, well thought out deci-sions. Alcohol consumption slows down your body’s sens-es, making it more difficult to react to things quickly and safely. Impaired drivers tend to get “tunnel vision” and are not able to process everything hap-pening around them. When unexpected things happen their ability to react appropri-ately is severely diminished and that can result in tragedy.

The implications and dangers of impaired driving are clear: fines, licence sus-pensions, prison sentences, or worse. It’s important to remember that the risk is not only on the road, the same applies on the water or outdoor trail. The same consequences can apply if you operate a boat, ATV or off-road vehicle while intoxicated. Motors and alcohol do not mix!

Our enforcement partners are on the lookout for impaired drivers and are endeavoring to keep our roadways safe for all. If you encounter a suspected impaired driver on the road, record the vehicles license number and call 911 from anywhere in the province. Be prepared to tell the dispatcher the licence number and the direction of travel of the vehicle as well other descriptors for the vehicle and why you suspect they may be impaired.

It is critical that we contin-ue to strive to improve our traf-fic safety skills and continue saving lives on Alberta’s roads.

The statisticsFrom 2007 to 2011, on

average each year over 100 people were killed and almost 1,600 people were injured in collisions involving at least one driver who had consumed alco-hol prior to the crash. Specifi-cally, in 2011, 78 people were killed and 1,391 were injured.

On average over the past five years, approximately 8,400 people were convicted of impaired driving in Alberta each year.

On average over the past five years, approximately 8,300 24-hour driving disqualifica-tions were issued each year under the Traffic Safety Act when police suspected a driv-er’s physical or mental ability had been affected by alcohol, drugs or other substances.

According to statistics, males between 18 and 24 years of age are most likely to have been drinking before the crash. Also, male drivers are much more likely to have

consumed alcohol prior to a collision compared to female drivers.

On average in Alberta, one in five drivers involved in fatal collisions have been drinking prior to the collision. This com-pares to an average of about one in 20 drivers involved in injury collisions. As the sever-ity of the collision increases, so does the likelihood that the collision will involve a drinking driver.

The consequencesDrivers with a Criminal

Code charge (greater than .08): First charge - immediate licence suspension until crimi-nal charge is resolved and a 3 day vehicle seizure.

Second and subsequent charges - immediate licence suspension until criminal

charge is resolved and a seven day vehicle seizure.

Addictions assessment may be required.

If you are convicted, driver licence suspension periods are as follows: First time offend-ers automatically receive a one-year driver licence suspension.

Second time offenders receive a three-year driver licence suspension.

Third time offenders receive a five-year driver licence suspension.

Drivers convicted of impaired driving causing inju-ry or death, receive a manda-tory five year licence suspen-sion. Drivers who are convicted of an alcohol-related Criminal Code charge will be required to attach alcohol sensors to their vehicle ignitions before they

are allowed to drive again: First conviction, one year. Sec-ond conviction, three years.

Third and subsequent con-victions, five years.

Drivers with a BAC of .05 to .08: First offence, immediate three-day licence suspension, three-day vehicle seizure.

Second offence, immediate 15 day licence suspension, sev-en day vehicle seizure, remedi-al course and possible hearing with Alberta Transportation Safety Board.

Third and subsequent offences, immediate 30 day licence suspension, seven day vehicle seizure, remedial course and mandatory hearing with Alberta Transportation Safety Board

Drivers in the Graduated

Driver’s Licence program: zero alcohol permitted.

First and subsequent offences, immediate 30 day licence suspension and seven day vehicle seizure.

Parents need to be aware that if their vehicle is seized for seven days because their son/daughter violated the GDL zero alcohol tolerance condition hardship is not grounds for appeal.

Police may disqualify you from driving for 24 hours if they believe your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is affected by drugs, alcohol, medical condition or physical ability. Police may also seize your vehicle for 24 hours.

Do you wake up in the morning and fi nd that the fi rst few steps you take are extremely painful on the bottom of your feet? Also marked by burning sensation in the base of the foot throughout the day, Plantars Fasciitis is one of our most limiting types of foot pain.

Camrose and District Fish and Game Association celebratesBy Dan Jensen

The Camrose and Dis-trict Fish and Game Asso-ciation celebrated another busy year at its 21st annual fundraising and awards banquet March 14.

Camrose and District Fish and Game Asso-ciation is involved in a wide variety of local and provincial endeavours, from stocking the Plea-sure Island trout pond just east of Camrose and pheasant releases to pro-moting catch-and-release programs and helping children attend outdoor youth camps.

“We put $40,000 into the fish pond property in the last year thanks to the provincial government ($18,000) and matching grants,” said Fish and Game Association presi-dent Wayne Harde. “We have made some marvelous improvements out there.”

The f ish pond is completely handicapped accessible (it has a handicapped f ishing dock) and has a number of places for visitors to sit and watch geese and wildlife.

“We were able to use a snowmobile to pull several

goose nesting platforms out onto the ice,” said Harde.

The pond has a comfort-able and relaxing setting thanks in part to 32 spruce trees that were donated by Denise and Bill Johnson from the Edberg and Fer-intosh area.

“He (Bill) brought his tree spade out there and put all the trees in for us,” said Harde. “Tom Tomaszewski and a few volunteers spent many days out there water-ing them.”

The association was also involved with an Alber-ta Conservation Project in which 12 of its members assisted with the release of 1,800 pheasants into the Daysland Conservation Area in the fall of 2014 in hopes of getting more people to buy pheasant hunting licences.

“If we can get more peo-ple interested in hunting pheasant in the province we will be able to gain more leverage with the landown-ers when it comes to habitat conservation projects that we undertake,” explained ACA biologist Mike Uki-chura. “We will be able to show them that it is possible to do habitat conservation without negatively affect-ing their bottom line.”

The association donated $1,000 during the year to the Alberta Fish and Game Association to assist with the purchase of more wildlife habitat.

Guy Anderson had the biggest elk antlers at 330.58 inches.

Derek These had the award for cougar with a skull measuring 13 9/16 inches.

George Cunningham had the largest walleye at 6.21 pounds, while Grant Skippen had the largest perch at one pound.

Jason Huellbusch received the master bow hunter award with a white tail deer whose antlers mea-sured 134.78 inches.

Daniel Busenius received the youth hunter award with a white tail deer whose antlers measured 120.78 inches.

Hansen leaving cadets ingood handsBy Murray Green

The 644 Cougars Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squad-ron will be losing a valuable member in Warrant Officer First Class, Alexander Han-sen due to age graduation in June.

Hansen has been the squadron leader for three years and he has enjoyed the journey from a rookie to accomplishing everything he could in cadets.

Don’t expect him to miss the adventures for too long.

“I’m thinking about join-ing the military (army) and learning the welding trade at the same time,” said Hansen. “I’ve enjoyed my time in air cadets, but I am looking for-ward to new challenges.”

A year ago last January, Hansen was selected to go to New Zealand to represent the top cadets in Canada during an exchange.

“We went over to help celebrate their 150th anni-versary in cadet forces and join in on some activities,” he explained. “Meeting New Zealand people, seeing them drive on the opposite side of the road, seeing the amazing scenery and learning about cadets were highlights. In New Zealand the cadets have to pay for pretty much every-thing, where here we have sponsors to make it easier for us. Six of us from Canada went and getting to know them was a good experience as well.”

Hansen enjoyed a Cessna plane ride to view the beauti-ful country.

“I got to see pretty much all of New Zealand from the air,” he said. “It is so beautiful. We also did some mountain biking, so we got to see a lot of the country that way. That was one of the fun things, along with being in their final parade for the 150th anniversary. There were a lot of New Zealand and Australian people and just us six Canadians, so they made us feel special.”

Hansen has participated in cadets for seven years and qualified for provincials in biathlon recently.

Cadets and biathlon run in the Hansen family. “I’m following in my sister’s (Katie) footsteps, who went to nationals twice,” said the high school student. “I’m just following up behind her.”

Hansen always wanted to join the army cadets, but with his sister already in air cadets he followed her.

“Now I will be heading into the army side and hope-fully face new challenges,” he continued. “I would like to spend 10 years in the mili-tary and then go into the civilian side of welding.”

Hansen reflected on the past seven years. “I was a young 12-year-old about to

cause trouble for someone. At first, I didn’t think much about being told what to do. Looking back, I have grown into a better human being because of my training, com-munity involvement and experiences,” he added. “Now I have respect for everyone that gives me respect.”

He recommends the cadet program to local youth. “It looks good on your job resume, it furthers your learning of aviation and sur-vival situations, improves physical fitness and things like that,” he shared. “If you want to carry on in the cadets program you have to be men-tally and physically fit to take on the challenges. It gives you a life goal to keep fit.”

Hansen indicated that he is quite comfortable in leav-ing and turning the leader-ship role to the next person in line.

“I feel that I’m leaving the program in good hands,” he said.

working on finding more RCMP officers to provide a safer rural area.

The Camrose RCMP Detachment is limited to three members because of the number of caseloads for each officer. Right now the work load doesn’t warrant more officers.

“That hasn’t changed,” Cpl. Beth Philipp said at the March 24 council meeting.

Cpl. Philipp indicated that she would also be leaving the detachment in the near future. She said traffic con-cerns were their biggest time commitment and commented on the increasing number of false alarm calls.

The number of calls increased from 102 to 156 last year. “That is pretty signifi-cant,” said Cpl.. Phillip. “We have also had an increase in property crimes. We are focusing on crime preven-tion.”

Councillor Doug Lyseng made a motion at the previous meeting to seek an appoint-ment with the RCMP at the spring convention of Alberta Association of Municipal Dis-tricts and Counties to discuss the number of officers in the Camrose detachment.

“We have established the Battle River Rural Crime Watch Society over the last few months and that has formed some partnerships throughout the area,” said Cpl.. Phillip. “We send out press releases, so people are now more informed.”

Cpl. Philipp suggested more education has to given to people about alarms. “Peo-ple buy alarms from security companies thinking every time they go off the police will be there with guns blazing to check if everything is alright. That’s not the case. We don’t respond to all alarms. Some-times a cat, or animal walks by a motion sensor and it goes off. How do we respond when an alarm goes off and no one is home? We can’t just break in and shut the alarm off. People need to know how to operate them.”

A lot of resources go out to false alarms, so an educa-tion piece along with a bylaw for repeat offenders might reduce the false alarms.

“I would like to see more research on if the bylaws reduce the number of false alarms before I support this,” said councillor Jack Lyle.

County protective ser-vices manager Mike Kuzio polled the surrounding coun-ties and municipalities and only one, Leduc County, had a false alarm bylaw.

“They allow send out invoices for locations that have a reoccurrence. Basical-ly, the first one is a warning,” said Kuzio.

The agenda item will be brought back at a future meeting.
