Jesus FlickFest is the only film festival of its kind in
North America. It was started in 2006 by Knox
United, and is cosponsored by the Faculty of
Theology of the University of Winnipeg. Admission is
free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Films
are shown at Knox Centre [400 Edmonton Street].
Knox Centre [Knox United] is across from Central
Park between Ellice and Cumberland. Parking is
available on the street and in a number of nearby
parking lots / parkades.

Colour of the Cross (2006). USA. LaMarre’s explo-
ration of an Afro-american Jesus -
crucifixion as a hate crime.
The Nativity Story (2006) USA. Dramatic presenta-
tion of the early life of Jesus & his
family.
The Miracle Maker. (2000) UK/
Russia. Animated. Ralph Fiennes & Julie Christie.
Considered by some to be one of the best film
depictions of Christ.
Son of Man (2005).
South Africa. Winner of the
Grand Jury prize at Sundance
(2006}, Son of Man is not yet in
theatrical release in North
America. The gospel story
retold as a tale of corruption
and redemption in contem-
porary Africa—the portrait of a
man whose currency is the
politics of compassion. It is a
gripping journey of love,
deception and betrayal in a
conflicted society.
The Last Temptation of Christ. (1988)
USA. Scorcese’s controversial film based on
Nikos Kazanzakis novel - that the last tempta-
tion Jesus faced was that of a peaceful and
pleasant life.
The Book of Life. (1998). France/USA. Comedy
about a reticent Jesus returning, deciding
whether to open the Book of Life [a Mac
Powerbook]
Il Messia [The Messiah] (1975). Italy.
Rossellini. Distribution issues kept this film from
having the impact it deserved. Many consider
it as good or better than Pasolini’s gritty epic.
Il Vangelo secondo Matteo [The
Gospel according to St. Matthew]. Italy.
1964. Pasolini’s gritty portrayal of the
story, using non-actors – a film that is both
bleak and beautiful.
Jesus Camp (2006). USA. Documentary about
children attending an evangelical ‘boot camp’,
training them for spiritual warfare.
Jesus (1999). Czech/Germany/Italy/USA.
Epic mini-series. Jeremy Sisto, Deborah Messing &
Jacqueline Bisset.
Life of Brian (1979). UK. Montie Python's
tale of Brian, born in the next stable & thereafter
mistaken for the Messiah.

story with a blonde Jesus and June

Jesus of Montreal (1989) Canada/
France. Denys Arcand. French with English subti-
tles. A passion play within a passion play.
L’Inchiesta [The Final Inquiry].
(2006). Italy. In 36 AD Tiberius sends an
investigator to determine the source of
a strange earthquake. He returns with
his information about Jesus of Naz-
areth, only to face the mad Caligula.
Jesus, du weisst [Jesus, you
know] (2003) Austria. Documentary by ac-
claimed directory Ulrich Seidl. Six Catholic
Christians share their thoughts and prob-
lems with Jesus in different churches. The
camera accompanies them as they pray.
Mary (2005). Italy/France. Ferrara directed
this story of 3 characters affected by Mary
Magdalene:.an egotistical actor/director
playing Jesus (Matthew Modine), an actress
who becomes obsessed with Mary Magda-
lene (Juliette Binoche) and an atheistic tv
journalist (Forest Whitaker)
Mary, Mother of Jesus. (1999), USA.
Mary is presented in a more revolutionary light—
Mary(Pernilla August) is a politically charged
woman. Jesus is played by Christian Bale (The
Dark Night}
Peter and Paul (1981) USA. Peter
(Robert Foxworth) and Paul (Anthony
Hopkins) assume leadership of the Church
as they struggle both against violent op-
position to the teachings and with their
own personal conflicts.
Un Bambino di Nome Gesu [A Child named Jesus]. (1987) Italy. Touching film
portrayal of the childhood life of Jesus from the
time he fled to Egypt and his return to Naz-
areth.
Cotton Patch Gospel (1988) USA. Humorous
stage-play of the Jesus story in modern day
Georgia.Based on Clarence Jordan’s writings.
The music and lyrics were completed by folk
singer Harry Chapin shortly before his death in
1981.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) USA. Ever
wanted to perform in Superstar? Now’s your
chance. Singalong version of Norman
Jewison’s classic. Feel free to dress as your
favourite character.
