CORPORATE NEWS7

SIA Cargo has started introducing new lightweight containers as part of a programme to phase out the older, heavier ones. The company has placed a contract with Nordisk Aviation Products for 4,311 lightweight containers, which will be supplied over a one-year period. The firstbatch was delivered in May.

The new Nordisk Twinlite AKE container, made of composite fiber panels, weighs 64 kilograms, compared to 82-88 kilograms for the older, aluminum containers.

The introduction of the lightweight containers helps reduce the overall weight of the aircraft, resulting in significant fuel savings for the SIA Group.

Less fuel burnt also mean lower carbon-dioxide emissions, enabling moreenvironment-friendly operations.

GREAT SHIPMENTS

Singapore Airlines Cargo Mumbai had the honor of transporting 2 shipments of Egyptian Mummies along with their artifacts to Singapore in early April this year.

These 2800-year-old Egyptian Mummies preserved for the afterlife, as well as the fascinating secrets hidden for thousands of years, have always been of immense mystery and intrigue for our modern civilization.

“Mummy: The Inside Story” exhibition was held at the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly known as the Prince of Wales museum) in Mumbai in collaboration with the British Museum and is now at Art Science Museum™ at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

GREAT SHIPMENTS

SIA Cargo Mumbai team is not deterred by the size and weight of cargo shipments.

In April, the team displayed this can-do spirit as they transported 2 such shipments without a hitch.

One of the shipments consisted of metal pipes that measured 54 feet and weighed 13 tonnes. Our experienced staff, Mr Joseph D’souza (Sales Officer) and Mr Vijay Phadtare(Operations Officer) took the initiatives to arrange for this shipment to be packed in a metal grid for safe transportation, when they noticed that the pipes were packed in wooden crates with both ends uncovered. This additional measure helped to ensure that this long and heavy cargo was transported smoothly.

The team took up the challenge of uplifting a shipment of heavy cargo again in the same month, this time the cargo weighed 19 tonnes. This broke the station’s previous record of transporting a single piece cargo which weighed 18 tonnes. Our Operations staff guided the freight forwarder through the build-up process and monitored the unloading and loading operations closely. Our freighter operations staff also ensured that the cargo was safely moved onto the freighter and secured for the flight to Doha.

Transporting heavy cargo is certainly challenging and requires great teamwork. We are proud to have earned the trust from our freight forwarders by overcoming such challenges successfully and we look forward to transport more of such shipments in the future! – By Hormaz Irani, Mumbai

OUR PEOPLE

In this issue, we invite David Goh from Freighter Planning department to share his experience in joining the company after graduating from school.

Can you share with us what was it like joining the workforce straight from the University?

Head to anyone who's working now and chances are that 90% of them will sing the same chorus of "treasure your time in school". As a fresh grad who has worked for close to a year now, joining the workforce after 16 years of schooling bliss indeed took more than just a change of mindset - realigning and forcing oneself to the daily rhythms of work-life was one thing, finding meaning within this repetition was another; especially when one comes to the realisation that this was to apply for the next 40 years. So while I struggled to get out of bed on a monday morning (quite difficult for a university student), finding meaning in work was another, and after working for 11 months what did I find? Its all about people - the relationships you make that really matter; far beyond every report or accolades you'll ever receive, and for me that was it.

OUR PEOPLE13

What does a job in Freighter Planning entail?

Working in Freighter Planning deals with numerous responsibilities - managing ad-hoc and seasonal changes to ensure profitability; exploring new routings for the expansion of the SIA Cargo network; study long-term corporate strategies, etc. In real terms, its a lot about coordinating with and managing the expectations of many groups of people with different goals and objectives.

Can you share some of the interesting situations that you have encountered?

Thankfully I haven't had much "interesting situations" to deal with - perhaps the most "interesting" would be when I first joined the department and had to restructure a number of flights and was a little startled to have received numerous calls from unhappy stations. Welcome to Freighter Planning.

What do you think are some of the challenges in Freighter Planning?

At times Freighter Planning can be a fast-paced environment and so one challenge would be the ability to be flexible and responsive, and definitely the ability to work under pressure. Not every decision we make is ideal for everyone, and we do get certain negative feedback or complaints from people - maintaining one's composure and learning to be confident in one's decision hence is also equally important.

What would you like to tell new staff who have just joined us at SIA Cargo?

Always be open to learning new things and well don't be afraid to suggest better ways of doing things? Certain things have been done in a certain matter simply because "we have always been doing in this way"; and sometimes there are way simpler and more effective ways of doing things - only if we stop and begin to consider.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Some 20 youngsters from Henderson Students Care Centre had a wonderful experience playing “chefs” for a day. Best of all, they got to eat their creations.

The three-hour cooking workshop, at Clementi Community Club recently, was made possible by the SIA Cargo Citizenship Programme Committee.

After the children had put on their chef’s hats and aprons, they were ready to tackle the first item — open-faced sandwiches. Under the guidance of an instructor, they learnt how to arrange ingredients such as egg mayonnaise and lettuce on baguette slices, and decorate them with fruits and tomatoes.

CHEFS FOR A DAY

To up the fun factor, we put the three teams to the test with a salad-making competition. The more artistic ones garnished the greens creatively while the rest were delighted just to be involved. They worked well together as they happily tossed up their salad.

Staff volunteers and the young “chefs” had a chance to vote for the best salad, by using stickers to indicate their favorite one. The contest ended on a high note with the kids loving their prizes of Angry Birds stationery.

The workshop ended with a lunch of pizzas, pasta and ice cream! It was a fruitful activity for the children, who also took home the food they had enjoyed preparing as chefs.
