THE IMPORTANCE OF EASTERCanon Patrick writes:To me Easter is the most importantFestival of the whole Christian year, because it's the joyful celebration ofthe resurrection of Jesus Christ, which helps us to remember the newlife we can all have through Jesus, aperson who suffered, died, and cameto life again for you and me. Sincemoving to Fakenham 13 years ago,one of the highlights of Eastermorning has been the sunrisegathering on Bullocks Hills with theSalvation Army. With the sun risingover Fakenham, the birds singing inthe background, the new life ofnature bursting out around us,singing joyful songs as the dogwalkers stop and listen or join in.Yet Easter wouldn't be Easter if itwasn't for Holy Week, which startson Palm Sunday, and all the eventsthat happen each day that we readabout in the Bible leading up toGood Friday and the crucifixion ofJesus. Jesus predicted that He wouldsuffer, die and rise again. The earlyapostles preached it, and the earlychurch experienced this resurrectionpower in their own lives, and passedit on to others. Yet there are stillmany folk who say that the wholething is a lie or a mistake. That theearly disciples invented the idea thatJesus had risen, and stole His bodywithout anyone seeing! How couldthey have done, because the tombwas guarded by soldiers, a stone wasrolled across the entrance. Even thewomen, on the first day of the weekwere wondering how they wouldmove the massive stone to finishanointing the body of Jesus andcomplete the burial ritual becausethey ran out of time before sunset

on the first Good Friday, Saturdaybeing their Sabbath. We're told by St Paul that Jesus wasseen on many occasions, by Peter, then His closest followers, then 500or more, then with James and therest He had commissioned torepresent Him. Then Paul says, "Hefinally presented Himself alive tome". Also the disciples themselveswere changed people. No longerwere they frightened, hopeless ordejected. Peter moved from fear tocourage, James from doubt to faith,Paul was changed from the arch-persecutor of the Christian church toa preacher and missionary to thosewho were not Jews. They and theirfriends were bold, transformedpeople because of their risen Lordand Saviour. When I was curatealmost 40 years ago, a book wasgoing the rounds, written by a chapcalled F. Morrison entitled "Whomoved the stone?" He set out toconvince his readers that the wholeresurrection story was hoax, andthrough the process and his researchgave his life to Christ and became aChristian. May this Easter also be atransforming time for you?Have a joyful and blessed Easter.

Palm Sunday this year is celebrated on 14th April. Duringthe following week each day is given a different name.

Fig Monday.Jesus stopped at a fig tree to find something to eat. Thefig was not ripe enough to be eaten and the disciplesheard Jesus curse the tree - may no-one ever eat fruitfrom you again. This happened on the way to Jerusalemwhen Jesus cleared the Temple.

Temple Tuesday.Jesus and the disciples returned to the Temple again. Onthe way Peter noticed that the fig tree was withered. InJerusalem, Jesus was involved in discussions with theJewish authorities and it was on leaving the Temple thatJesus told the disciples that there would not be onestone left of the Temple after they had drawn hisattention to the beauty of the building.

Spy Wednesday.Later in the day, Jesus and the disciples returned toJerusalem. Jesus reminds his disciples that it is two daysuntil Passover. He warns them of his imminent deathtelling them that: 'the Son of Man will be delivered up tobe crucified'. It was that evening, in the darkness andprobably while the other disciples and Jesus slept, JudasIscariot went to the authorities to betray Jesus. Theywere delighted and agreed to pay him. It was agreedthat the deed would be done in the Garden ofGethsemane the following night. There would be no-oneelse around except the disciples. Jesus was a threat tothe Roman peace and had to be stopped.

Maundy Thursday. We remember the institution of the Lord's Supper, HolyCommunion, the Eucharist and the events of that nightin the upper room. We also remember the arrest ofJesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his subsequent‘trials’ which continued into…

Good Friday. The day that Jesus was crucified after being interrogatedby both the religious leaders and the Roman authorities.Peter, as Jesus had told him the night before, haddenied knowing Jesus. Jesus died on the cross.

Holy Saturday. The name given to the day between Good Friday andEaster Sunday. It is the seventh day of Holy Week, theday on which Jesus “rested” from His work of providingsalvation. As Jesus died on Good Friday, he called out, “Itis finished!”

Easter Day.The Day of Resurrection. Jesus is alive! A day of greatcelebration. Below is a verse from an Easter hymn.

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom.let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth; death hast lost its sting.Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.

Happy Easter!

TOWN TALKTown TalkAt this time of year I always readthe poem Home Thoughts FromAbroad to my elderly group at theMaltings Care Home. The firstverse really captures its sentiment.

'Oh, to be in EnglandNow that April's there,

And whoever wakes in EnglandSees, some morning, unaware,That the lowest boughs and the

brushwood sheafRound the elm-tree bole are in tiny

leaf,While the chaffinch sings on the

orchard boughIn England - now!’

As you know, Spring this year gotwell ahead of itself. In mid-February I took a photo of 'a hostof golden daffodils' beside theWensum just below the townbridge. Various flowers jumpedvery early into life and the blossomwas everywhere. Winter had itsmoments but was generally ashadow of its proper self, thankgoodness. Early last March we allcowered as the Beast from the Eastbattered Norfolk. Browning'spoem, had he written it in 2019,might well have referred toFebruary or March. Mind you, itwouldn't have scanned half sowell…..

When a young woman from Edinburghjoined her bookbinder husband fiftyyears ago to live in the market town ofFakenham, she had no idea how thiscommunity would find a special placein her heart. With her medicalbackground as a children's nurse andnursery nurse, she was well placed totake on the role of Welfare Assistant inthe Junior School when theopportunity arose. For twenty-fiveyears she looked after the needs ofchildren who had special medicalconditions or disabilities and alsohelped the teachers in the classroomwhen she could. Her late husband,Andrew, was the first of many Scottishprinters who came to Fakenham afterthe industry in their own area hadreceded. Janice has three sons and isproud grandmother to sevengrandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Andrew died tragically in aroad accident in 2001 and Janice washelped to cope with this sudden loss, not only by the loving care of herfamily, but also her many friends inFakenham. She says she " lovesFakenham. The people have been verygood to me". And Janice is also a goodfriend to others. She is an activemember of St Anthony's CatholicChurch and has been involved in manycharitable causes, including the RedBus, Cranmer House as a volunteer andcommittee member, Talking Times andcurrently organises the Christmas giftboxes. This edition of the Beacon reflects onEaster, which is a time of ultimategrowth and renewal. I've been out andabout in Miller's Walk to see three newbusinesses. With a home care agency, anationwide retail store and an electricbike shop, they are vastly different. Sohow are they faring?

Helping Hands is a long -standing agencyproviding professional home care inNorfolk They opened a base in Fakenhamduring the last year. Tina Larbie, branchmanager told me that they offer a rangeof domiciliary care services, whichsupport clients to remain within theirhomes.

Referrals may come through SocialServices, Age Concern, via the Internet,Care Matters etc. An assessment of theclient indicates what services arerequired. Then they match the needs ofthe client with the skills of the carer.Recruitment is a key part of the businessand their training schedule has wonawards for its foresight and added skillbase. Store manager Ruth says they usean honest approach. Some peoplerequire companionship, housework, shopping, personal care and alsoworkwith those with various debilitatingillnesses. Ruth feels pleased at how wellthe agency is doing.

Next in larger premises, is The Works.Struggling to describe the sort of store itis, I realize it is aptly named. It's anamazing accumulation of adult andchildren's books, stationery, games andpuzzles, arts and crafts and seasonalitems, such as Mother's Day gifts.

The Works offers keen prices andchanging stock. I spoke to two or threeshoppers and they said that it was greatnot to have to travel to Lynn; that thestore offered good prices; and that therewas variety.

Finally, I spoke to two members of staffand asked if they liked working there. They seemed very enthusiastic and saidwhat a great atmosphere there was instore. They went on to say thatcustomers had told them that it was thebest store in Fakenham; it had the bestprices and it was friendly.

Lastly, I visited Norfolk Electric Bikes Ltd.

Alan Poole and his partner Joanne, set upElectric Bikes Norfolk in August 2018,opening in November after makingimprovements to the premises. Theyhad previously been involved with bikesbut did their research before deciding onFakenham as a place to live and work. They have not regretted their move, because they have sold twice as manybikes as originally estimated. They reportthat Miller's Walk offers a wealth ofshoppers who bring in business.

Electric Bikes Norfolk, Alan told me,caters for a variety of people. If amotorist gave up driving his car in orderto commute to work on an e. bike, s/he'dbe able to claim 70% of the cost of thebike back. For 20+ age groups, there aree.bikes for off-roading. For holidaymakers, campers and caravanners, folding e.bikes are a positive alternative. So far sales have come from West andNorth Norfolk. They stock a variety ofmakes including hybrids which aresuitable for roads and tracks.E bikes are de-regulated from some redtape. So helmet wearing is notcompulsory. The bikes however cannotexceed 15.5 m.p.h., but automaticallythe engine reverts to manual if this isexceeded. It sounds as if all three businesses aregoing places.

Easter Week by Charles Kingsley

See the land, her Easter keeping,Rises as her Maker rose.Seeds, so long in darkness sleeping,Burst at last from winter snows.Earth with heaven above rejoices;Fields and gardens hail the spring;Shaughs and woodlands ring with voices,While the wild birds build and sing.

You, to whom your Maker grantedPowers to those sweet birds unknown,Use the craft by God implanted;Use the reason not your own. Here, while heaven and earth rejoices,Each his Easter tribute bring-Work of fingers, chant of voices,Like the birds who build and sing.

Brexit tariffs cause price of Communion Wine to increase. For almost 20 years the Diocese of Norwich has enjoyed an informal arrangement with L’Eglise Protestante Francaise whohave supplied the 656 Churches throughout Norfolk with Communion wine, at a very cost effective rate. Now, due to Brexit, in an unexpected turn of events, due to export tariffs added by the French Government, the price of thewine is set to increaseby more than 300%.Over the last 6 months the Rt Revd Graham James, former Bishop of Norwich, has asked our own Rev Francis Mason to sample wines from acrossthe world, in an attempt to find a competitively priced alternative. Although a cheekyAustralian Wine “Yado Pori Falls“ comes close, sadly, none have met the required standard, and it is therefore suggested that communicants be encouraged to bring their own wine totake at Mass.Obviously for each member of the congregation to bring bottles of wine to each service, would not be practical – and of course there may be the temptation for attendees to take asmall tipple during the sermon – something which is not to be encouraged. It is therefore proposed that, as a trial, the congregation of Fakenham Church be asked topurchase a small silver hip flask. These are available from 1st April from Linda Frost, at a priceof just £5.00

The tradition of giving children cardboard eggs filled with gifts began in Victorian times, only laterbecoming chocolate. While Fakenham currently has its own very prolific chocolate factory where couldyou get your Easter eggs before Kinnertons opened in 1988? The answer is in this month's picture fromthe Archive which shows Mrs Hastings' Chocolate Box and tea Rooms in Norwich Street in 1937, withone of its adverts. The picture was donated by Fakenham Heritage Group
