Woods Creek DevelopmentWonder Lake Water Treatment Plant

A design/build project withLintech Engineering for the

Kennedy Homes’ Woods Creek De-velopment, was turned over to theVillage of Wonder Lake, Illinois, forfinal ownership. The project in-cluded two 135 gallons-per-minutewells, a 200,000 gallon reservoir anda water treatment plant with iron re-moval. The main building’s exteriorwas finished to match the design ofthe new homes and has a backwashwaste storage tank under the inte-rior floor slab. The potable waterreservoir is cast-in-place concretewith recessed form liners to give theappearance of real brick. ManhardEngineering was hired to operate thefacility which has a capacity to serve400 homes. The project was startedin August 2004 and completed byApril 2005. The Northern Illinois PlanningCommission has projected that thepopulation around Wonder Lakewill increase to approximately

40,000 people within 20 years. TheWoods Creek Water Treatmentplant, and others modeled on thisdesign, will eventually replace theexisting 50 year old public watersystem. sludge storage silos at the North ShoreSanitary District jobsite in Zion, Illinois. Thetwo tanks, which weighed 97,000 poundseach, were built by the owner at an offsitelocation and transported by JJH, over a twoday period, from the fabrication area to thebuilding where they were lifted into place. Thetrailer used to move the tanks had 13 axles –all of which steered. The JJH millwright division; All AboutEquipment, LLC; Gatwood Crane Services;Independent Mechanical; and Manesis Trans-portation, Inc. worked with Safety Coordi-nator David Grum and Superintendents KenKreason and Bob Johnson to make this asmooth and safe operation.

This Consoer Townsend Envirodyne Engineers, Inc. designed project includes the con-struction and installation of a concrete, brick-faced booster pump station and reservoirfor the Village of Glenview, Illinois.The pump station has one constant speed and twovariable speed vertical turbine can pumps and control equipment. The chlorinationequipment is housed in a separate, architecturally finished building. Included in theconstruction is a 190,000 gallon cast-in-place, reinforced concrete wet well with athree million gallon reservoir, architecturally finished with red brick-faced panels.

Batavia Central Water TreatThis project is an addition and expansion for tIllinois, designed by Odell Engineering, Inc. It coning, new water storage tank, a sodium hypochlotem, iron and manganese filter equipment and mexisting plant. The new plant will have a capacitytogether with the existing plant, will handle the cnew deep wells and their expanding population

This 18 month project, designed by R. E. Hamilton, includes the demolition of an exist-ing lagoon, clarifier, sludge storage and blower buildings. New structures include aera-tion and digester tanks and two 80 foot diameter clarifiers with aluminum domes. A newsludge processing facility and miles of piping are included in the plans for the renovatedfacility for the Village of Minooka, Illinois.

Pingree Grove Water and Wastewater Treatment PlantThis water and wastewater treatment plant project located in Pingree Grove, Illinois, had its groundbreakingceremony in the fall of 2004 and is scheduled for completion late this summer. The site and concrete workproceeded throughout the winter to meet this tight project schedule. The treated water will be stored in a 35acre lagoon (to be constructed by the owner) and used for irrigation of the surrounding areas. This is a design/build project, with Lintech Engineering, LLC, for Cambridge Homes.

Antioch Water Treatment FacilityThis Village of Antioch, Illinois, construction project for NeumannHomes consists of a water treatment facility, a one million gallon waterstorage tank and three wells. Designed by Smith Engineering Consult-ants, Inc. the project involves forming the precast concrete wall panelson the ground then lifting them into place.

Twelve employees have taken the 12 week Dale Carnegie Coursewith more employees expected to participate in the near fu-

ture. Mike Henderson is a staunch supporter of the program hav-ing completed the course several years ago. The Dale CarnegieCourse focuses on the “Five Drivers of Success” which are: Build-ing Greater Self Confidence, Strengthening People Skills, Enhanc-ing Communication Skills, Developing Leadership Skills and Con-trolling Worry and Stress. Employees who have completed thecourse are: Iuliana Barnes, Bob Bernhardt, Pete Bjerning, MelCowen, Mike Fuglestad, Marc Gilman, Cristin Henderson, JoeHenderson, Diana Hofmann, Charla Nguyen, Mike Shelley andJamie Shirling. The JJH attendees really stretched their “comfortzones” resulting in numerous awards including: Breakthrough, Out-standing Performance, Human Relations, Crashing Through, Vi-sion and the coveted Highest Award for Achievement. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) was founded in 1955. Today ithas over 5,500 members with chapters in 48 states and two Canadian provinces. NAWIC’s

objectives include promoting education, contributing to the betterment of the construction industryand encouraging women to pursue and establish careers in construction. As President of the Lake/McHenry County of Illinois Chapter # 368, Jamie Shirling works with other members of theconstruction industry to provide networking and educational opportunities for its members. Meet-ing topics have included testing methods for worker’s compensation claims, construction safety,industry insurance requirements, liens and waivers of lien, time management and organization andcommunication skills. Recent construction tours have included Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, TargetMundelein, Greenleaf Center’s three-story office building and the Gurnee Police Station. Anna Soo Wildermuth, founder of Personal Images, Inc. conducted a workshop at JJH to help employees “make their first impression their best im-

pression.” The workshop covered many different areas such as: Your Profes-sional Image, Your Verbal Image, and How To Communicate to Get the ResultsYou Want. Business Director Steve Dalbec added a bit of levity to the morningby arriving in a full tuxedo complete with patent leather shoes. Anna spent theremainder of the day meeting with employees one-on-one, offering self-improve-ment tips and wardrobe suggestions. Many employees, benefitting from Anna’sexpertise, have already started applying her suggestions. Thank you, Anna!

Iuliana Barnes Becomes a US Citizen

After four years and a lot of paperwork, Iuliana Barnes ob-tained her United States citizenship! It was a long, slow process

with the Department of Immigration (who at one point lost all her pa-perwork requiring her to resend it). The ceremony took place at theFederal Court House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Iulia and 77 oth-ers received their citizenship. “I’m glad it’s over,” said a very happyIulia. “It was a very impressive ceremony. Now I don’t have to worryif I go to visit my family in Romania, that I will have problems comingback into the USA.” Congratulations Iulia - US Citizen! T

JHKim grew up on her family’s farm in Zion. She attended College of Lake Countywhere she majored in Construction Management. Since 1988, Kim has been

actively involved in the construction industry, working for several different tradesincluding insulation, asbestos removal, electrical, excavation and landscaping. Mar-ried since 1992, Kim and husband Bill have four children - twins Austin and Kayley,age 4 and daughters Dani (short for Danielle), age 19 and Beth, age 18. Each yearKim helps with the livestock auction and 4H at the Lake County Fair. In her sparetime she enjoys camping, fishing, horseback riding and helping out on the farm.Welcome to JJH, Kim!

Jack started his career as a surveying instrument man working on the West VirginiaInter-state Highway and then enrolled in the Operating Engineers Apprenticeship

program. He was only in the program a few weeks when he was accepted to the StateUniversity for Engineering. After college, Jack worked for a major oil company and asmall consulting firm but his heart was still in construction. He took a job with asmall general contractor and later moved to a larger firm that specialized in largescale projects such as university buildings, shopping malls, hotels, prisons, condos,officers’ housing, residential care facilities and communcation centers. Three yearsago, Jack married Linda and made Chicago his permanent home. He has two childrenand three step-children. Although Jack is a licensed pilot, he finds golf more fun andmore affordable. Jack enjoys working at JJH, especially with how effectively every-one deals with each other. Welcome Jack, we enjoy working with you, as well!

Karyl comes to the company from Mitsubishi, where she worked in the ac-counting department for the past five years. Karyl is no stranger to the Gurnee

area, having lived here for more than seventeen years with her husband Ken andthree sons: Matt, 25, Dan, 21 and Scott, 15. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking,gardening and reading. Karyl will have the unique experience of working for heroldest son, Matt, who is a JJH project engineer. How does Matt feel about workingwith his mom? “I always wanted to tell her what to do,” says Matt. “Now, I can!”Welcome Karyl!
