Hello and Welcome to the April

edition of Christchurch Eye! This is

the month where Spring really gets

into full swing! March has been a mixture

of weather with some lovely sunny days

and a lot of wet days! I’ve been decorating

my kitchen window with daffodils and

tulips to brighten up these miserable wet

days; ‘April showers’ is usually the saying

for this month, let’s hope that is the case

rather than the awful torrential rain we’ve

been having. I barely recognise our chooks

wading in our so called garden; it’s more

like a mud bath!

Well March has seen a very exciting month

for Christchurch eye! Just a few days

before going to press, the Bournemouth

Echo and the New Milton Advertiser &

Times, both featured the launch of our new

Privilege Club Card Scheme. The Privilege

Club lets you enjoy discounts and special

offers with many shops, pubs and services

here in Christchurch encouraging support

for our local economy. You can read more

about how you can become a Privilege

Club Member on our back page and you

can keep up to date with new offers on our

website www.christchurcheye.co.uk

Inside this month’s issue you can read all

about Women’s Workout and their new

ultrasonic treatment ‘Sonic Slim’; my

interview with The Kings ‘new Queen’;

Christchurch Scouts & Guides ‘Gangshow’

review and we tell you a little about the

story behind Easter plus lots, lots more as

ever!

Why not try your hand at our monthly

Sudoku competition to be in with a chance

of winning a beautiful bouquet of fl owers

from Fairmile Florists? Well done to Liz

Crockford who won February’s prize of a

bouquet of fl owers and also to Jane Noble

who won the Refl exology treatment! Enjoy!

I am always looking for new ways of

making our community magazine as useful

and interesting as possible so please feel

free to email me with your suggestions

and, if you are friends with local business

people, let them know about Christchurch

Eye and our new Privilege Club. The more

businesses that join the Privilege club, the

more discounts available to our members!

Thanks!

You can now follow us on Facebook and

Twitter (though the latter is only just starting

out) to keep you updated with everything

that’s going on at Christchurch Eye.

Due to popular demand, Christchurch

Eye is now printing even more copies

each month to enable a wider coverage

of the BH23 area. You can now fi nd us in

Highcliffe, Mudeford, Bransgore & Burton!

Happy Easter to you all!

I’m Christine owner of Women’s Workout, the place in Christchurch where ladies come to have fun whilst getting the

benefi ts of health and fi tness.

Since opening seven years ago I have discussed fat loss with hundreds of people and almost everyone has a problem spot - usually the abdomen or back of the arms. Unfortunately for many, these are the last areas to get reduced; instead they lose weight from their face or chest. This is because the body decides where the fat’s going to be deposited or used from.

I know how frustrating this is and I’ve been looking for a way of overcoming this very problem for years. I’ve researched and tested products without success - until now – Sonic Slim!

Sonic Slim is a safe, ultrasonic treatment. It works by stimulating the body’s natural mechanisms to release a hormone that causes the fat cells in the target area to release the stored energy into the blood stream, a process known as lipolysis. As long as this energy is used up by exercise within 60 minutes then the result is à-la-carte slimming!

I know you will be sceptical, I was. So take a look at the before and after photos then look closely at the echo scans. They clearly show a reduction not just in fat below the skin but also fat (known as visceral fat) that is stored deep in the body. Clinical

trials in hospitals and universities show an average reduction of 5cm if the abdomen is targeted in a 12-treatment programme. That’s 2” off your waist!

Sonic Slim is now available at Women’s Workout and to celebrate we are offering a 12-treatment programme at the special price of £180 (Normally £220). Just complete a questionnaire at the beginning and the end of your treatment to qualify for this special price. Go online or call now to fi nd out more. www.womensworkout.co.uk – 01202 488482

This cool shop is open seven days a week and stocks everything from kayaks to wetsuits and clothing.

We asked shop manager Paul Barrow what makes Crazywater different. ‘We only deal with brands that share our high standards, plus we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and great product knowledge. The big difference is when our staff are not in the shop you will find them sailing, paddling, riding or boating in and around Christchurch Bay on kayaks, bodyboards, surf boards, wakeboards and RIBs.

Paul says, ‘with all this local knowledge we are regu-larly asked where to launch a boat, windsurf or where to go bodyboarding in this area so we are pleased to have been involved with the new Christchurch Bay website that brings together a lot of local watersports information in one place at www.christchurchbay.org

Crazywater is the place for sit-on-top kayaks and kay-aking and they have a huge stock of Ocean Kayaks. These are the original and best sit-on-top kayaks with over 20 different models to choose from. Besides be-ing great fun for all ages to paddle Ocean Kayaks are used for fishing, diving and surfing plus they are ideal for exploring rivers, harbours and the sea.

With hundreds of wetsuits and accessories in stock at Crazywater you can choose a summer steamer or shortie wetsuit for warm days and a thicker wetsuit for colder days. Rash vests are for comfort and a buoyancy aid is essential if you are kayaking, dinghy sailing, jet-skiing, power boating, waterskiing or wakeboarding.

Open 7 days Crazywater is near the traffic lights in Highcliffe. For more information on kayaks, wetsuits and watersports you can call Paul or Lucy on 01425 275111 or visit www.crazywater.co.uk

Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after Easter.

Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church’s mission to the world.

Pentecost is a happy festival. Ministers in church often wear robes with red in the design as a symbol of the flames in which the Holy Spirit came to earth. Pentecost comes from a Jewish harvest festival called Shavuot. The apostles were celebrating this festival when the Holy Spirit descended on them. It sounded like a very strong wind, and it looked like tongues of fire. The apostles then found themselves speaking in foreign languages, inspired by the Holy Spirit. People passing by at first thought that they must be drunk, but the apostle Peter told the crowd that the apostles were full of the Holy Spirit.

Relatively newer elements such as the Easter Bunny and Easter egg hunts have become part of the holiday’s modern celebrations, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians alike.

Candles and eggs are symbols of resurrection and new life at Easter.

Nearly three months of the Christian year are devoted to celebrating the events that surrounded the end of Jesus’ life on earth: his death

by crucifixion and his rising to life again and ascending to heaven. The period begins on Shrove Tuesday and continues through Holy Week and Easter to Ascension Day. The dates are fixed in relation to each other but Easter varies from year to year between late March and late April.

Easter is the most important annual religious feast in the Christian year. According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday (also Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday), two days after Good Friday and three days after Maundy Thursday. Easter also refers to the season of the church year called Eastertide or the Easter Season. Traditionally the Easter Season lasted for the forty days from Easter Day until Ascension Day but now officially lasts for the fifty days until Pentecost. The first week of the Easter Season is known as Easter Week or the Octave of Easter. Easter also marks the end of Lent, a season of fasting, prayer, and penance.

Ascension Day celebrates Jesus’ ascension to heaven after he was resurrected on Easter Day. In some accounts, he was seen being lifted up into heaven and two men in white robes appeared saying that he would return in the same way.

The menu is extensive but not intimidating, offering a range of fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce. The restaurant structures its menu with this in mind and provides a number of specials. Starters include tantilising Tempura of Tiger Prawns with a sweet chilli sauce, ever popular Mussels, either Mariniere or Thai style, Teriyaki Beef, warm spring onion and noodle salad and Saute Squid with chorizo salad. Prices are between £3.95 and £6.50. The prawns I had were fantastic with a really light batter.

Mains offer a great choice including Loin of pork with crushed new potatoes, garlic green bean and grain mustard sauce, Poached fi llet of haddock with sautéed leeks and lemon butter sauce, Fillet of Seabass with chorizo, saute potatoes, spinach and butternut squash puree and a excellent range of West Country Steaks. Prices are reasonable from to £8.95 to £19.95. The haddock was perfectly cooked and the butter sauce really worked well with it.

Desserts are a real strength of The Kings. If you get a chance, try the Trio of Chocolate - Indulgent and beautifully presented.

The Kings is a truly local restaurant, utilising all that is best about Christchurch and it surroundings. Fish from Mudeford, vegetables from the New Forest, meat from Salisbury and cheese from the Isle of Wight.

Future plans for The Kings? Claire Stepney, General Manager told us that work is starting on the function room at the rear of the building to turn it into a Georgian sitting room that will serve afternoon tea, complete with wood panelling, comfy chairs and mood lighting.

If the rest of the hotel is anything to go by it’s sure to be a great success. Claire is clearly passionate and focussed and a testament to the team who work with her. We would thoroughly recommend The Kings.

Adam Lynk

The Kings is situated in the heart of Christchurch, opposite the bowling green on Bridge Street. Formerly known as The Kings Arms, it was once my Dad’s favourite haunt.

I remember enjoying a bottle of coke here, watching the salmon fi shermen and waiting for my dad to fi nish his pint of “man’s ale”. I have always held a great fondness for the place and

when I was asked to review The Kings, I must admit, I was a bit nervous. Would it live up to my childhood preconceptions? Well, it certainly surpassed those. When you walk through the gorgeous double Georgian doors you know that you are entering a piece of Christchurch history. The entrance is grand but welcoming and makes you feel that you are about to enjoy a real treat. The staff immediately greeted us with genuine warmth and invited us to enjoy a pre dinner drink in the crisp, chic and contemporary bar. Afterwards, feeling relaxed, we made our way across to the busy main dining room. The room was alive with the sound of people talking, laughing and enjoying themselves. The buzz created a natural energy and excitement and a sense of intimacy that ensured conversations would not be overheard. The dining room is decorated impeccably with beautiful chandeliers creating a warm glow throughout. Each table is lit with three small candles.

The staff were exceptionally well informed and attentive, providing details regarding the specials and their origin.

Cheryl: What niche do you feel the Kings Hotel & Restaurant offer?

Claire: The Kings will soon be able to offer the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of a busy morning shopping, or just a chance to read the papers and relax in the most beautifully resorted Georgian sitting room from 7.00am until midnight. It will be the perfect location to rest your feet and recline in one of the deep sofas or arm chairs and indulge in a fresh morning coffee or light lunch, or for later in the day share a traditional Dorset afternoon tea.

Cheryl: What makes it special? And obviously it’s a great location.......

Claire: The Kings offers the most romantic backdrop for intimate celebrations, private occasions, wedding ceremonies and receptions, hosting from 2 to 120 guests. The views from the hotel and restaurant across the beautiful historic Priory, the heritage Bowling Green, Norman Hall and Castle remains, provide a magical backdrop for wedding reception drinks and photographs.

Cheryl: How would you describe the food at The Kings?

Claire: Provenance is a key element of all our menus. Having grown up in the Devon / Dorset borders I am well aware of the fantastic food producers the area boasts and their produce is what makes our menus. We are constantly looking to build relationships with our local food community. We bring some of the fi nest ingredients the area has to offer into the Kings kitchen, and then let our passionate team of chefs’ work their magic to create the best tasting local food, at value for money.

Cheryl: Do you have any special promotions?

Christchurch Eye were invited along to the stunning historic, Georgian building known as The Kings to meet Claire Stepney, their new manager. This was a great opportunity to fi nd out a little about their new Queen!

Cheryl: What were doing before you came to the Kings?

Claire: I grew up in rural Devon within a family business of a local community village store and bakery, so I soon caught the bug for customer service.

I gained an HND in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management from Bournemouth University and after completing my course I was offered the opportunity to work directly for Albert Roux as part of his private dining company in central London.

Since then I have worked in many Country Houses, Relais and Chateaux properties including The Vineyard at Stockcross, Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons, Summer Lodge Hotel, Whatley Manor and Chewton Glen Hotel. One of the most memorable properties is Combe House Hotel in Devon, an idyllic, rural, quintessentially English, country house hotel.

Cheryl: What brought you to the Kings?

Claire: Harbour Hotels is a fast growing, private collection of prestige hotels with properties throughout the South. The opportunity to take the reigns at such a beautiful and unique hotel with such obvious natural attributes was too much to pass up on. The Kings is a beautiful Georgian property steeped in history in the centre of Christchurch. I fell in love the moment I stepped inside.

when Walter opened his hotel in Mudeford there was probably a strong body of opinion that wanted the name Mudeford changed to the more pleasant sounding SandfordHumby’s Hotel would have been the obvious venue in which to hold the social gatherings for these aristocratic visitors. The diary of Ann Smith (nee Barrow) reports that; “Near to Christchurch is a resort for sea bathing called Muddiford, here were Lords, Baronets and a host of the nobility of England. There were members of both Houses of Parliament and there were dozens of them.”Two years after Walter Humby opened the Sandford Hotel his mother died and he returned to Christchurch to take over the family hotel. Walter Humby was made Mayor in 1847 and no doubt his establishment was the place for all offi cial functions. On January 24th 1856 The Kings Arms was the venue for a celebratory luncheon in honour of Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, a famous son of Christchurch. Lyons had been born in Burton and had risen to command the Black Sea fl eet during the Crimean War.Walter Humby ran The Kings Arms for 20 years but by 1857 he had decided to sell and the Hotel was bought by Nicholas Newlyn. Walter Humby did not enjoy a long retirement as he died in 1858. Not surprisingly the Hotel now became known as Newlyn’s. Nicholas Newlyn was also Mayor of Christchurch in 1873 and 1874. The Hotel continued as the premier entertainment establishment for offi cial and social functions in the Town, a role which it enjoyed for another 100 years. All images are the copyright of the Red House Museum and the Christchurch Local History Society.

The Kings Arms dates from 1801 and was built by George Rose of Christchurch who was Member of Parliament for the Town between 1796 and 1818. It was built on the site of the

Old Kings Arms Inn which had stood for about one hundred years. The Hotel opened in 1802 and was known as Humby’s after the fi rst landlord, one Thomas Humby. He shared the running of the Hotel with his wife Miriam. When Thomas died in 1820 Miriam took over the business. Their son Walter William Humby also went into the hotel trade and opened the Sandford Hotel in Mudeford in 1835

At this time Mudeford was an exclusive resort for the rich and famous. King George III, who was a close friend of George Rose, had visited Mudeford and his daughter Princess Caroline had stayed at Sandhills, his marine villa. With such elevated connections

I have always had highlights in my hair but lately feel my hair looks “washed out” quite quickly after having it coloured. I want my hair to look more golden and sun kissed instead of this drab blonde, what do you suggest?

Firstly please do not take any drastic action at home, pleeeese! If your hair is looking dull and faded it could be down to one or a combination of things.

Perhaps the highlight colours you are having in your hair are too ashen or beige so the result although lighter is flat. Often people are really scared of having golden colours in their hair as they are worried the look will come out “oran-gey”. The reality is that the colour swatch that you see in the shade chart often looks totally different when woven through your natural hair.

Ask your hairdresser to combine a warm, honey tone with a beige blonde tone if you are nerv-ous to begin with about adding warm shades into your hair. It’s worth remembering however that if your hair is looking flat quickly it probably means you have a lot of natural pale pigment in your hair so an injection of more gold is prob-ably what it needs so go for it!

Another enormous consideration is your home hair care, honestly speaking if you are using the incorrect shampoo it can make the hair fade by about 30%. The correct shampoo recommend-ed by your hairdresser is imperative to keep-ing colour looking fresh. In your case I would recommend the new Schwarzkopf “Blonde Me” range especially for yes you guessed it blondes natural or otherwise! In particular the warm blonde shampoo/conditioner would be great for you to keep your hair warmer and stop that fading flat look.

Their experience includes many years in PR and marketing plus a unique expertise of online communication.

We asked web designer Siobhan Quesnel what she sees as important in modern web design. ‘Most website visitors are time sensitive and if they have not found what they need in seconds they will leave. At Blue Ride Media we know that once your customers or readers have found the information that they are looking for it must be relevant and quick to read. The danger with a lot of modern website design is that you end up with a complex website when your visitor is looking for a simple answer. We like simple solutions because they work!’

The Blue Ride Media team bring together ‘Function, Fit and Form’ to ensure that every project has clear objectives. Function is how websites, E-commerce and E-mail marketing

campaigns perform technically. Fit is listening to what a business wants their website to achieve - then making it happen. Form looks at how really good design and styling can enhance your business.

Siobhan says, ‘A lot of businesses just need a modern website that is easily found by Google. If you want to talk to us about your website we can give you an idea of designs and costs ranging from a simple one page website up to a very sophisticated design. Our websites can include our easy to use Content Management System that allows you to do everything from creating new web pages to building an online photo gallery.’

Chris Bangle has a lot to answer for. In my eyes at least, he took the BMW 5 series and downgraded it from the best executive saloon in

the world to something that ranked below both the Jaguar XF and the Audi A6. Don’t get me wrong, dynamically the last 5 Series was the best car in its class; it was just ugly to behold and, when you sat in it, it didn’t make you feel special.

The thing is, BMWs never have been real head turners; they were handsome cars with an indefi nable air of class and, I have to say, the latest 5 Series is exactly that. So, now that the “controversial styling” has been sorted out, has this latest version regained its crown as the best on the market?

First of all, a bit more about the exterior. The new car is a couple of inches longer than the old one but, because there’s an extra 4 inches on the wheelbase, it actually appears more compact. The ridges on the side panels do a good job of disguising the height of the car and I like the new headlights. The fl attened bonnet looks a bit odd but overall this is a nice looking car. The inside of the previous model always looked too clinical to me and, although it was spacious and very comfortable, there was no sense of luxury. The new interior is not vastly different to the old one but somehow it does manage to convey that fi rst class feel – perhaps it’s because the model I drove had optional leather seats.

The 5 Series retains BMW’s much derided iDrive system which allows you to control most of the car’s functions via a menu on the central display using a rotating knob. I found this one quite easy to use; maybe BMW have made it that way or maybe I’ve fi nally got used to it. The display screen is way out of your line of sight though, which is distracting. There is oodles of room in this car, particularly in the back, though the transmission tunnel makes it awkward for anyone sitting in the rear centre seat.

Dynamically it is still as excellent as ever. The ride is subtle yet crisp and really sets the standard for the class and the handling is beautifully controlled. However, it isn’t quite as agile as the last model and somehow is not as involving a drive. It is also a very wide car and feels it, particularly on a narrow road with a high nearside verge. Where BMW has really made great strides is in producing cars that deliver strong performance coupled with quite extraordinary economy. This 2 litre diesel engine illustrates the point admirably. It produces 184bhp and will propel this hefty car to 62mph in 8.1 seconds and on to a 141mph maximum, yet it delivers 56mpg in mixed driving. That being said, I still think the power band is too narrow and it is too harsh and noisy for a car with luxury pretensions.

So, is the 5 Series once again the king of the executive saloons? Well, I must admit that, all things being equal, I still prefer the Jaguar XF but there are a host of other things to consider. For starters, there is no base model with the XF so the entry level price is close on £30k whereas the BMW starts at £28,165. Nor will there be an estate version of the XF putting in an appearance and the XF is too far outside the corporate mainstream for many tastes. The BMW is a better car than the current version of the Audi A6 and much more interesting than the decidedly bland Mercedes E Class.

Congratulations then BMW, you have regained your crown….and welcome back from the planet ugly.

The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention.

My car was legally parked as it backed into another vehicle.

I started to slow down but the traffi c was more stationary than I thought.

I was backing my car out of the driveway in the usual manner, when it was struck by the other car in the same place it had been struck several times before.

The gentleman behind me struck me on the backside. he then went to rest in a bush with just his rear end showing.

Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.

I thought my window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it.

In an attempt to kill a fl y, I drove into a telephone pole.

The claimant had collided with a cow. The questions and answers on theclaim form were - Q: What warning was given by you? A: horn. Q: What warning was given by the other party? A: Moo.

On Saturday 29th May, the second Christchurch Community Celebration (CCC) will be held in Saxon Square, Druitt Gardens and other venues around the town. This annual event has been created by a small group of local people as an opportunity for Christchurch individuals, societies, clubs, groups, organisations and businesses to showcase the wealth of activities that regularly take place in the town. They want to show off all that is beautiful about the town and its heritage. The date chosen for this most recent addition to the town’s annual calendar commemorates one of the earliest recorded annual events in Christchurch – the ancient Trinity Fair.

The earliest known reference to Trinity Fair appears in a document written in about 1146 by a cleric, possibly a retired Flemish abbot, named Hermann. Hermann records that, after leaving Winchester, the canons ‘came to a town called Christikerca... where a fair is held every year on the octave of Pentecost. This fair is widely known, and many traders come to it.’ The ‘octave of Pentecost’ is the Sunday after Pentecost (Whitsun), placing the fair eight weeks after Easter.

A fair at this time was essentially a large market, with itinerant traders selling goods not readily available at the weekly market. Hermann’s account goes on to describe how the town was then all but destroyed by a fire-breathing dragon with five heads!

It seems that the popularity and profitability of Trinity Fair continued to grow during the 12th century, perhaps

assisted by the introduction of Augustinian canons and the founding of Christchurch Priory in about 1150. By the end of the 12th century the fair probably ran for five days, from Saturday until the Wednesday following Trinity Sunday.

It is to be hoped that these historical aspects of Trinity Fair – including the doubtfully historical five-headed dragon - might one day be incorporated into the Christchurch Community Celebration.

Through the initiative of local people, both of the town’s ancient fairs; Trinity Fair & Faith’s Fair (which were both legally abolished in 1872) are now once again commemorated in the annual calendar. Both events present an opportunity to promote the history and heritage of the town, and are reliant on the continued support of local people.

For more details about the town’s two historic fairs, consult ‘The Medieval Markets & Fairs of Christchurch’ by David Eels, available locally at £3.50.

If you would like to join in this annual celebration of all that is wonderful about this town and its community, please check out the website www.focuschristchurch.co.uk. You will find more information about the event, video and pictures from last year, and the application form which, to guarantee acceptance, must be completed and returned to organisers by 30th April 2010. (It may be possible to consider one or two late applications a little beyond this date, but this cannot be guaranteed.)

Nominations for the person who has the Xchurch Factor and will help to open the event are pouring in. It is very easy to nominate: simply send the name of the person and a brief explanation of why they deserve celebrity status either via email to [email protected], or by letter clearly marked XChurch Factor, posted or handed to the Christchurch Information Centre, High Street, Christchurch BH23 1AS. Please note that nominations must be received by 6.00 pm on 30th April. It is not possible to consider any received after this deadline, regardless of when they were posted or emailed.

This year’s amateur variety show is to be held Thursday 8th – Saturday 10th April at The Regent Centre. The acting, singing and dancing gala has existed and run

for the last 50 years by Christchurch Scouts and Guides and is the only Gangshow in Dorset.

Original Scout songs, ‘Crest of a Wave’ and ‘Birds of a Feather’, written by the show’s founder Ralph Reader in the 1930s, are incorporated in the show with modern pop songs to please all ages in the audience.

There are 65 children and adults in the cast, from age 8 years to 65 years. The costumes and stage props for the two hour performance are volunteered by Scout and Guide leaders and parents.

The show’s local stars are Cubs, Scouts and Guides from Burton, Highcliffe, Somerford, Bransgore, Mudeford, Jumpers and Fairmile. Doctor Who accompanied by a scout and a guide travels in a time - travelling tardis to find the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

The first half of the show has a different scene for each decade the Gangshow has been running - from 1960 to 2010. The second half sees the cast do dances and theme songs in jazzy costumes that represent countries around the world.

They land in a swinging 60s Austin Powers party with youngsters dressed in bright flares, frills, afro wigs and sunglasses as they swing to the mashed potato dance, the twist and the funky chicken.

A group of cute eight-year-old Cub scouts dressed up as the band ‘The Beatles’, mime along to ‘Help’ strumming wooden guitars. The white rabbit appears in the audience and runs about and the Doctor and his helpers follow the rabbit.

The last decade has an Amy Winehouse tribute tune belted out by a lookalike Scout leader, who sings ‘Rehab’ whilst wearing a massive beehive wig. In the second half of the show the trio reach wonderland and see the Mad Hatter’s tea party and the choir sing ‘A Very Merry Un- Birthday’.

Then there is a floaty ballet dance before the trio leave wonderland to a round –the- world themed adventure - stopping off at different major countries.

The best country act is when they stop in Egypt - the choir sings Walk like an Egyptian by The Bangles. Two leaders in a camel costume shuffle across stage, bobbing along to the music.

The play ends with the trio arriving home. ‘Crest of the Wave’ is sung by choir and audience. Overall it’s an entertaining family show; it’s hard to believe that before 1998 it was traditionally an ‘only boys’ show - they would dress up for the female roles!

A yearly theatrical performance by Scouts took off when producer Ralph Reader directed a performance by boy scouts from London for the Royal Variety Show in 1937.

Gangshow mania inspired scouts nationwide, hitting theatres round the country, eventually going worldwide. In his autobiography Reader explained his inspiration for the Gang Show:

“The greatest influence for good in my whole life has been scouting. The brotherhood it has given me, the richness of its ideals, in fact everything it stands for.”

A day in my life from Monday to Friday revolves around my role as Practice Manager in a GP surgery. Outside of my working life I have a very different way of fi lling my hours!

I’ve been involved in Girlguiding for the greater part of my life, fi rstly as a Brownie then a Guide. While my daughters were young and starting their own Guiding lives, I opted not to be involved as a leader. That didn’t last!

In 1984 we moved to Germany for fi ve years where my husband took up a post attached to the Forces. We threw ourselves into our new life, but with no Girlguiding locally, I was driving 26 kilometres each way to take our older daughter to Guides. It wasn’t long before I was in uniform and running a Brownie unit alongside the Guides and then went on to set up units where we were living.

Twenty six years later I’m even more involved than ever. Since we returned in 1989 I have been involved in the running of a Brownie unit in Highcliffe. We meet weekly during term time, offering a variety of Girlguiding activities, opportunities and fun. As a Division Commissioner my role is to support the leaders and helpers, through District Commissioners and Division Executive Committee members. We are all volunteers, committing to as little or as much

time as we can, without this commitment Girlguiding couldn’t fl ourish in the way that it does.

This year Girlguiding is celebrating its centenary. 100 years ago a small group of girls dressed up like their brothers, marched into the boy scout rally at Crystal Palace and when they saw Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, they asked for ‘something for the girls’. The Centenary has kept us busy, but I am glad to have the opportunity to be involved in these celebrations.

The weekend of 5th/6th September 2009, the anniversary of the rally, launch parties were held across the country. Here in Twynham we had a party on Stanpit Marsh where we all let our hair down, enjoying everything from street dancing to an infl atable maze. Even the sun shone all day!

Since then we have had a Division Camp at Foxlease, there has been a display at The Red House Museum, with thanks to the museum team and we’ve organised our Thinking Day service held in Christchurch Priory. We still have a whole host of Centenary events ahead, including one of the highlights, an international camp at Harewood House.

This week, as well as our usual Brownie meeting, I have interviewed girls for the role of Mayor’s Guide for the coming mayoral year, arranging auditions for our Division’s part for the forthcoming Dorset Pageant, attended the Annual County Review, as dealing with the admin linked to both my unit and the Division. Today I have helped rainbows, brownies, guides and leaders of Christchurch District in placing bird boxes made by the girls around St Catherine’s Hill. No two weeks are ever the same.

I love my Girlguiding life. To see girls grow through Guiding is so satisfying. Also I have had the opportunity to rise to challenges that I’m sure I would never have tried otherwise. I have made so many friends that I wouldn’t otherwise have met, friends that I know I will keep for a lifetime. With the support of my family, I can say that I am a very lucky person!

Who is Girlguiding UK?

Girlguiding UK is the UK’s largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women, with over 600,000 members. More than 50% of the female population of the UK has been in Guiding at some point in their lives. There are ten million people involved in guiding in 144 countries and over 600,000 members in the UK.

What is our Mission and Vision?

Girlguiding UK, as part of a worldwide movement, enables girls and young women to fulfil their potential and to take an active and responsible role in society through its distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities delivered by trained volunteer leaders. Our vision is to have sufficient volunteer leaders to enable every girl and young woman to have the opportunity to join Girlguiding UK.

What is guiding?

Guiding is a game – with a purpose. It provides opportunities for girls and young women to:

• be challenged by new adventures and experiences and achieve a sense of pride in accomplishment

• develop self-awareness, self-respect and self-confidence

• think for themselves, govern themselves and make their own decisions

• develop a sense of tolerance, justice, kindness and honour, learn teamwork and acquire leadership skills, working with and for others

• making friends and have fun

• appreciate the environment and how to live in it

• understand and learn about the world, its people and cultures

Girlguiding UKGuides usually meet once a week where they follow a programme of activities, doing anything from abseiling to party planning and from circus skills to survival. By taking part in these activities, guides learn lots of life skills such as working as a team.

Former celebrity guides include Cat Deeley, Zoe Ball, Emma Thompson, Gail Porter, Carole Vorderman, Kate Moss and Davina McCall.

Guides are divided into groups according to age. These are:

Rainbows 5-7 year olds (4-7 in Northern Ireland) Brownies 7-10 year olds Guides 11-14 year olds Senior Section 14-25 year olds

Who can be a Guide? Guiding is for everyone. Guiding is open to every girl or young woman, regardless of race, faith or background. Girlguiding UK respect the special requirements of each girl’s faith or culture, such as dress, diet, holy days and so on.
