A Message From The Director

Greetings!

Happy Spring! Thanks to all who helped in making our 11th Annual Dinner Auction Benefit fundraiser the a huge success! When all was said and done we raised over $30,000 for our operations here at the center! Thanks to the many who donated cash or items, sold tickets, worked on a committee, or simply came and supported the cause. It is because of our great members willingness to help, along with a lot of dedicated volunteers and staff, that it is possible to reach our goals each year! Thank You All Very Much! So now it’s on to other events and activities for the remainder of 2015 like our Karaoke Day on April 8th and our Mother’s Day Luncheon coming up in May, or our Summer Croquet League beginning in June! Whatever it is that catches your eye, I sincerely hope that you’ll come and enjoy all of the great things going on at Hillyard Senior Center! Lastly, I am still waiting for some Monday afternoon ping pong challengers at our game day activity in the HSC Craft room! Happy Easter ! Jerry ☺

The HSC Senior Summer Croquet League will be holding an organizational Meeting on Monday May 11th from 1:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting is to cover rules, fees, and to introduce this fun activity for seniors interested in playing this summer. The league will begin in Mid June and continue through mid August. If you are interested in playing as an individual or forming your own three person team, plan to attend this informational meeting. A HUGE THANK YOU! to everyone that supported our Annual Dinner Auction Fundraiser! And to the many vol-unteers that worked on the Auction, your help was essential to the overall success of the Auction, it truly wouldn’t have been possible without your efforts! I am so looking forward to Spring, I assume you are as well. I hope you’ll find a day trip in April to join me on, it’s time to get out of the house and get back to the center! Also mark your calendars and make plans now to join us on Saturday, May 9th for our annual Moth-er’s Day Luncheon. Great fun, food, entertainment and prizes for best hats await you at our annual event to honor our HSC mothers! We are also looking forward to many of our great overnight trips this year as most have filled up and we’re now ready to go! If you would like your email added to our overnight travel mailings, stop in and give us your email address. See you soon!

Silver Café, the Senior Nutrition Program of Spokane County and Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, is funded by the Federal Older American Act & Senior Citizen Services of Eastern Washington. Milk or Buttermilk are served with meals. Call 482-0803 by 12:00 noon the day before you plan to eat, so we can order your meal. Cancel as soon as possible, so someone else may have your meal. Suggested donation $3.50. Please sign in when you arrive for the meal. ***Ask us about frozen meals for the weekend and liquid meals for those needing extra nutrition.***

Join your Director and friends from the HSC for a nice drive to Deer Park and a delicious breakfast out at the First Street Bar & Grill in Deer Park. You will be ordering off of a limited item breakfast menu. Start your week off right! Hurry this trip fills quickly! Trip price in-cludes Transportation, and Escort. HSC Pick-up is at 9:30am, and Home pick-ups after.

Hutterite Colony Tour &Lunch Wed. , April 22nd (**Moderate) Member $39 / Non-Member $42 Join us for lunch and an educational tour of the Marlin Hutterite Colony. A delicious homemade lunch is served with a variety of special foods and desserts. You won’t believe their industrial kitchen, professional wood shop, and the enormous building that houses their farm machinery. Come learn about community living! Trip price includes: Transportation, Escort, and Lunch. HSC pickup is at 8:00am and Home pick-ups before.

Bird Aviation Museum and In-vention Center in Athol Wed, April 29th (**Moderate) Member $26 / Non-Member $29 We’ll be in for a real treat when we visit the Bird Aviation Museum. This Museum was founded in 2007 by Dr. Forrest Bird, inventor of the fluid con-trol device, medical respirator; and the pediatric ventila-tor. The museum features exhibits on avia-tion, inventors and their amazing inventions, and so much more! We will eat lunch (on your own) after our tour .

Spring Social at Windriver Place Thursday, April 2nd (*Easy) Member $3 / Non-Member $6 Come along to Windriver Place Retirement Community for a Spring Social with snacks and entertainment from HSC Direc-tor Jerry Unruh. Windriver Place is our Monthly Birthday Party Sponsor at HSC and we would like to thank them and support their spring social event! We’ll leave the center at 3:30PM and return at 6:00PM. Trip price includes Trans-portation, party fun and entertainment! HSC Pick-up is at 3:30PM. Home pickup is before.

Casino Trip to Chewelah Thursday, April 9th (*Easy) Member $12 / Non-Member $15 The drive to Chewelah is beautiful, gambling is fun, and when you are finished relax in their café. The breakfast and lunch menu are deli-cious and the prices are reasonable (on your own) Register early for this trip, it fills quickly! Trip price includes: Transportation, and Es-cort. HSC pickup is at 9:00am and Home pickups after.

The New Planetarium at SFCC Saturday, April 11th (*Easy) Member $18 / Non-Member $21 Let’s tour the night’s sky at SFCC’s planetari-um, SFCC is one of only two communi-ty colleges in Washington State to offer a planetarium to its students. Most of the half a million dollar cost to construct the planetarium came from the student body, and the planetarium has been used on a daily basis for college astronomy classes since com-pletion. Trip price includes: Transportation, and Escort. HSC pickup is at 12:00pm and Home pick-ups afterwards.

Hillyard Senior Center’s trip and tour policy for travel. The policy is to establish voluntary participation and assure fair and equal access to sign up for any and all future trips and tours.

Our travel policy will incorporate

call in, mail in, and walk in

reservations. The center will utilize a first pay, first go, method for registration. Phone and walk in

reservations DO NOT guarantee a

spot on a trip. Participants who call in and request to be signed up on a trip but are unpaid are simply considered to be on an interest list.

When participant’s money has been received and a receipt has been issued, then and only then is a person considered to be a

registered participant of the trip and their spot guaranteed.

Interest sign ups and paid

registration will be done at the Hillyard Senior Center office (4001 N. Cook 482-0803). Sign up for all trips will be taken at 8:30 am on

the 1st working day following the receipt of the newsletter. (sorry we cannot control the order in which everyone receives their mail).

Participants living outside of the

normal van pickup boundaries (North to Weile, East to Freya, West to Division, and South to

Indiana) will be considered for a trip home pick-up on a individual basis depending on the location of the trip’s destination.

Non members of the Hillyard

Senior Center will be allowed to participate in one trip prior to

becoming a member.

Hillyard Senior Center will no

longer refund participants for cancellations of day trips or tours.

However, if a cancellation is made at least 5 working days prior to the trip, a credit will be issued for the use of a trip at a later date.

Individuals requesting a home pick

-up should add an additional $3.00 to the trip advertised price.

Registration and participation in a

travel trip is considered a voluntary acceptance of liability and shall not hold HSC responsible for any

participants own negligence.

Hot Club of Spokane is celebrating the music of Spokane’s biggest music stars from the early 20th century: Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey, and Al Rinker. Bing Cros-by’s nephew, Howard Crosby, will be a guest performer for this show, along with Julia Rinker, who is Al Rinker’s daughter and Mildred Bailey’s niece (Al and Mil-dred were siblings)This special event com-bines live music with Documentary film, featuring archival footage of Spokane and rare photos of Bing Crosby as a child growing up here. The Spokane Regional Health Dis-trict is seeking approximately 15 eligible (based on income) people to participate in a Focus Group here on Fri, Apr. 24 from 10-11:30 AM. For those who participate, the health district will be asking questions about your physical activity, as well as questions about fruits and vegetables you eat. Focus Group participants will earn a $15 grocery gift card and will be fed when attending. The health district will use this information to de-velop community strategies to help residents be more physically active and eat more fruits and vegetables. ** Plus** Connecting Generations Through the Power of Your Story! Nancy Crawford, photographer and family story advocate, will share her enthusiasm for remembering, pre-serving, and sharing the stories of your life.
