What’s Inside:
Member CRITIQUE: April 4th
Jim Garrison will be leading our critique. All members are invited to participate with their work and suggestions. Critique begins promptly at 5:45 pm and runs to 6:45 pm prior to the General meeting. Guests are welcome.
Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are
welcome for suggestions to finish them. Participants in the critique please do not bring paintings freshly wet, oils particularly, as the paint gets on our hands and clothes from handling the pieces and then paint is transferred to other works and the carpet in the critique area. If you have a frame to put the painting in for handling purposes that will be appreciated. Thanks from the critique leaders.

Spencer Simmons will demonstrate landscape painting
in diminishing light.
Spencer SimmonsBorn and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Spencer Simmons was brought up around painting. His grandmother, an equestrian and western painter, took him into the studio at a very young age. His father, a house painter, showed him the importance of good materials and craftsmanship.
He graduated from ASU with a degree in Fine Arts in 2015. Since then he has been faithfully devoted to painting in a traditional manner in oil and watercolor. He has trained at the Scottsdale Artists School and The Russian Academy of Fine Arts in Florence as well.
Along with the love of capturing the likeness of a human being the enjoyment of capturing the essence of a landscape has become equally gratifying. He now spends most of his time painting out doors, being a patient observer.

Dear SAL Members, Friends, Artists and Art Lovers,

Letter from the PresidentFreddie Lieberman
Creatively yours, Freddie
As I am writing this message, I'm thinking it is way too hot for mid-March and, hopefully, April will bring more normal weather---whatever normal is. Anyway, the Desert Botanical Garden Paint-Out is going great. Even though we can't sell from our entrance table, our artists are selling from their painting spots. I think we're on track to have record sales at our April 7, 8 & 9 Sale. Even if you aren't participating, please come over and bring some friends with you. Remember, SAL's profit funds our annual scholarship. Volunteers have come forward to fill many of the OPEN POSITIONS. We're still looking for a Program VP and a Website Manager. The website manager doesn't have to attend board meetings and can do the job from any location as long as a computer is available. Please consider these jobs and call me with any questions. See you at the April 4th General Meeting. Have a very Happy Easter and Passover.

The first Paintout Saturday brought in $910 and the 2nd week was $1,400.Last Paintout Saturday is April 1st and that’s not an April Fool’s joke. Then the Show and Sale April 7, 8, and 9, 2017. The panels will be up and have your name on the top. Barbarann will help decide on table space so please contact her Friday morning after panels are hung. With the tables we want to present a professional image and not a garage sale array. There will be slings for prints. Friday, April 7th please be there to deliver your artwork no later than 8:00AM. We will need workers to help put the artwork at Friday’s end into the Archer House and bring them out again Saturday morning. Then do the same for Saturday night and Sunday morning. Please remember the panel size is 50” high and 35” wide and your work cannot hang over the sides of the panels.
1st VP of Programs - Pat Serie
Thank you, Kyle Rafferty for the March presentation of your color approach to plein air painting. A hiker and backpacker, Kyle felt the strong pull of the landscape and decided to head west for adventure and artistic discovery. Settling in Phoenix, Kyle started a small decorative finishing and mural painting business called Artefino Surface Design. Kyle has been an avid plein air painter since 2011.
