From the President

Reflections from the ED

It is mid-year and only 6 months until the next Great Peppers Meeting. Gosh, make that 5months and a few days. By now, the announcement of a new location has been made. Themeeting will be held at the Sheraton Arlington. It is a wonderful location with lots ofrestaurants available via the free trolley service. Overall, the hotel looks to be a step up, maybetwo, above the last one and should make a fine home for us the next few years. Moreinformation is available in this Trails. Check it out. Sign up for the meeting. Make your hotelreservation. I hope everyone will plan to stay on site, so you maximize your time with friendsand can be safe instead of driving home after a long day and night.

The Special Board Election is underway and a new addition will be joining the Board. Thefour candidates bring a wealth of chili and real world experience to the race. While only one

will win, I do hope that those not winning will immediately toss their hat in the ring for the regular elections inSeptember. The sooner one announces, the more time to get your campaign message out and win over the voters.

Rumors, comments and ideas about Board decisions – come straight to the source if you have a question, comment or idea to share. Your Executive Director can field your inquiry and direct it to the most appropriate directorto respond. This is more efficient and will give you accurate information instead of relying on the less informedcommentary often posted on blogs. While the Board is trying to communicate all that it can, remember most of ushave day jobs and must live within certain time constraints when performing our volunteer duties. That translates towe don’t have the time to do everything immediately. It is a reason not an excuse. Yet, we do know we are human andcan always do something better. Remember that we are all volunteers and hobbyists in CASI and that negativity is adowner when shared amongst the chili family. When viewed by visitors on the Internet it may deter them from comingout to participate. Cooking chili should be a place to get away from the troubles of the day, contribute to charity andmake for happy times. Discord shared can leave a bad taste in people’s mouthes, and as a chili cook, I want that tasteof chili to be wonderful upfront and leave a warm wonderful after taste that lingers.

Speaking of taste, have you had your Casa Fiesta taste today?

Ed Blair

April will bring us a new member to the CASI Board of Directors. This special election hasbrought CASI four (4) good candidates: 1) Susan Armand, Houston, TX 2) Sue Ellen Gillen,Boerne, TX 3) Richard Hewlett, Wichita, KS and 4) Kris Hudspeth, Garland, TX. The votingdelegates consisting of Great Peppers and current Board of Directors will select one of thesecandidates to fulfill the vacant board seat through September 2014. The election will beperformed though a secured election site and each voting delegate will have a secret dedicatedlink to submit their vote. The Winter Board meeting was held in mid-February in Irving, TX. Saturday was a workshopwhere anyone attending the meeting could join in with the board and discuss a variety ofsubjects including last year’s TICC, this year’s TICC assignments, ranch issues, sponsorships, websites, and other CASI issues. Sunday was the winter Board of Directors

meeting where the board authorized the ranch manager to continue with maintenance items, authorized the CASIpresident to negotiate the contract for the 2013 Great Peppers meeting, authorized Don Hoy to purchase a trailer forKrazy Flats to assist in transporting ice and beer to the saloon, and also made the decision to not have the BBQ eventthis year in the same format as the past four years. The Summer Board meeting will be held in late June or July andwill continue to look at the 2013 TICC events, finalize TICC work assignments, and plan for the 2013 Great PepperMeeting.

My last subject is change. Change is the process of becoming different. You can love change, embrace change, hate change, or reject change; but change really doesn’t care because change is constant. I am a firm believer in theevery changing technology in today’s world and also a firm believer in the freedom of speech that our family, friends, and neighbors have fought for throughout history. But in today’s world of instant communications and social media, Ido ask for a small window to allow the board to communicate with the Great Peppers before the jailhouse lawyers andnaysayers jump on the bandwagon and their soapbox and tear apart the organization that we all love and want to seesucceed. The thing I do not like about the change in communications through the social media outlets is the old timeface to face exchange of difference in opinions, so if you ever do need to communicate the old fashion way, justsearch me out. Chili……Charity…..and…….Fun……even with change.

SEASONSI had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in

Terlingua since the closing of the CASI grounds afterthe November TICC. The moisture of a late Januarysnowfall fueled an incredible bloom of late Februarybluebonnets. Like everything else in the Big Bend, thebluebonnets are huge and stretch out as much as threefeet in height. I wish more of our members couldcontemplate and enjoy the peace that Rancho CASI delos Chisos provides in the off season. The spirits of our

departed cooks preside over the grounds and you can feel their presence. It is also a great time to visit with many of our wonderful sponsors and

supporters in the area. I have to catch my breath after the cook off before Istart knocking on doors to prepare for what will be TICC 47. When the site isvacant there is an opportunity to visualize ways to promote sponsor products andways to entertain the attendees. The Terlingua area offers a myriad ofdestinations and it is a shame more people don’t get out and move around. Thisyear we are looking at ways to offer new events and hospitality withoutentertaining everyone 24/7. We are exploring options to replace the bbq eventwith things that are better attended. Our sponsors are ready to roll out the redcarpet, but we must be there to show support.

Speaking of support, we continue to solicit help from the membership inpurchasing Casa Fiesta Products from Bruce Foods. This is a way to helpsupport them in the marketplace while earning funds for scholarships. Mild Bill’sis stocking the product also and giving an additional rebate to the scholarship

fund. This gives you availability and a double source of funds for scholarships.Remember, when you buy something from Mild Bill’s, it does not cost anymore postage to throw a few cans of beans in the box.

Our beer and wine sponsors are looking at ways to gain more exposure atthe ranch, as well as any other cook off venue where we can get theminvolved. We had representatives onsite last year from L & F, Glazers,Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi, Western Spirits, Lone Star Beer, RepublicDistributing, Big Bend Brewing, Tarantula Tequila, and of course hospitality forthe Tequila Rosebuds by Tequila Rose. By the way, congratulations toStephanie Parsons of Tequila Rose on her recent wedding and honeymoon inHawaii. In many ways CASI engages in chili, charity, fun and spirits!!

Our sponsors play a large part in our ability to fund scholarships. Theselection process is going on now and many worthy kids will benefit when thisyears crop is in. Friends of CASI have stepped up to fund two scholarshipswith a big shout out to Ancira. The Chili Divas offer a breath of fresh air andmany of the pods have jumped in, along with the ladies of Texas Ladies State.

If you have thoughts on potential sponsors or would like to help withsponsor projects at TICC, give me a call. We have many VIPs that need helpsetting up and getting around.

I appreciate your support of the CASI Sponsor Program!

Jim Ezell Sponsor Chair

Cooking With CASIGreetings!

Once again I would like to personally thank all of youinvolved in organizing and conducting CASI sanctionedcookoffs. Your hard work and dedication is greatlyappreciated and because of you CASI continues to bringon new promoters, judges, cooks, and members. We continue getting positive feedback regarding thewww.CASICHILI.net website and calendar. You can viewscheduled cookoffs and even click on a map directing youto the location. If you have not yet been to the website goonline and check it out.

If you have a Cookoff you would like to schedule forJune 2013 your cookoff must be submitted for approval

no later than April 15th. Thanks to all of you for planning early and getting yourcookoffs submitted. Also if you are emailing information regarding an upcoming cookoff, the email address is [email protected]

According to CASI Rules all CASI cookoffs must be advertised in the TerlinguaTrails before the cookoff takes place in order to be sanctioned. You run a risk of notbeing sanctioned if you submit your cookoff for approval during the month before yourcookoff. if it is after the 15th of the month ...

And as we discussed in last month’s Trails, more and more Pods are printing theirown forms which is a convenience for you and saves CASI postage. A majority of theGreat Peppers took cup tickets for the year with them at the Great Peppers Meeting.Once again, thanks to all of you who already have your cup tickets.

For those folks who do not have tickets and are expecting a packet the packets aremailed out the first week of the previous month. This is due to an increasing number of“lost packets” and duplicate requests. So do not be alarmed if you have submitted acookoff but have not received a packet. March Packets will be mailed the first week ofFebruary, and so on. If you have an exception and need your tickets earlier feel free toemail a special request and we will get your packet in the mail earlier.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as one of your Directors and best wishesfor a successful cookoff!
