April’s President's Message:

Hi Everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the meeting as much as I did. We had a great turnout. There was a lot

to cover but I think things are moving along nicely. Please let me know if there are things I missed. I think

clarifying the guidelines for screening will make the process smoother for all. One thing I meant to ask was

why we have more people screening and fewer people showing their work?

I was happy that we have new people joining and more people opening to becoming actively involved.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! We still need many more to join in small ways. DON’T BE

SHY!!

Thank you Judy Buskirk for bringing Ned Mueller to the party. For me it was very helpful to have him share

his process of creating a piece of work. One short session never seems enough. Now I want to be 20 again and go to art school! We will look for-

ward to learning what dates he may have for his workshops here.

We only got 2 people to sign up for refreshments for next month. I should have done a better job of bringing that up. One or 2 more would be

great.

As a parting thought(again) I challenge each of you to make a name tag for yourself that shows the artistic you and make a point of meeting some-

one new at our next meeting. Spring is here, BE HAPPY.

Kate Griswold, President

to see the gardens on the tour for free and to paint in lovely places and talk to public about art and what you do as an artist. This

year, any artist who has participated in the past (and has artwork from a past Garden Tour) is invited to take part in a special exhib-

it in June at Kimball Gallery- contact [email protected] right away to get information and so that we can plan. This exhibit

will be “on the map” as part of the “Gig Harbor Garden Tour” the last weekend in June. The Garden Tour always has huge attend-

Upcoming Opportunities to Paint

If you have not tried Plein Air Painting (painting out of doors) yet, or if you are already a plein air painter, you’ll have your chance this summer. Starting after Memorial Day (Thursday May 29th)and running through Labor day- each Thursday, the PAL Plein Air Painting Group will paint in a different location. We meet on site each Thursday morning- aiming for 9am till Lunch. If you are on the email list- you will get specific directions to the weekly site. If you have bright ideas for painting locations- we’d like to hear from you too! Email [email protected] or Feather Hilger at [email protected].

An additional plein air painting opportunity comes at the end of June. The Gig Harbor garden Tour happens the last weekend in June (June 28,29) and you can sign up to be an “Artist in the Gar-den” that weekend. By signing up you have the opportunity to go on a pre tour to take photos and choose your garden(s) to paint in during the weekend- it’s a good way to get your face/art and name out there, and an opportunity to paint in some lovely locations. Although you cannot bring items to sell- you may hand out your business cards, and many artists have ended up selling pictures done on location to Garden owners or folks on the tour. Contact [email protected] or Kate Griswold at [email protected] to be in-cluded.

Drawing You In is a free

event sponsored by PAL each

summer. Usually held on Wed

afternoons at the Uptown Pa-

villion, it features a costumed

model to paint or draw. It’s a

wonderful opportunity to paint

from life each week from July

4th till mid September for

FREE! Watch newsletter for

more info.

Mary McInnis did a wonderful presentation for the Olympia Art League March general meeting. She chose to paint an exciting floral with vibrant pastels. Mary was at ease with the group and helped newcomers to understand the tech-niques and materials of a pastel artist. She also passed on new ideas and materials for the established pastel artists in the group. After her presentation many members spent time looking at and buying her art cards and prints. Thank you Mary for driving down from Port Orchard to promote art in Olympia!

Karen Marie Petrillose just got notification of making the 2nd round of judging for the

World Watercolour Competition (sponsored by The Art of Watercolour magazine(published in French and

English).

For the first round 2000 entries were selected, 2nd round 296. My name along with the other 296 names

will be listed in the June issue of the magazine. The final 25-30 will be in a gallery show in Narbonne in

southern France in October 2014."

Karen received 2 awards in March. 2nd place PAL member show and Best of Show PGA members show.

The next member’s show will not be until the summer art festival at the end of July at

Key Bank on Judson Street so start painting, sculpting or whatever you do so that you

have something to enter in the show!

Kay Barnes recently held a workshop at Donna Trent's studio sponsored by PAL. Those of us who attended were treated to all sorts of great watercolor hints and techniques that drew on Kay's 32 years of experience with watercolor. There were demonstrations and hands-on help with painting every day. Some of the valuable things we learned were getting to know how water and paint act on paper, knowing atmospheric prospective, to never skimp on paper or paint, to know how to evaluate our own work, and one of my favorites: "proper prior preparation prevents piss poor performance". More: to remember water is the transportation vehicle, to consider painting an "adventure", painting is a story-telling experience and 10-10-10 - every 10 minutes get 10 feet away from your painting for 10 seconds. Don't say "I don't have time to paint".. MAKE time (carpe diem - or seize the day!) My advice is when you have an oppor-tunity to take a workshop from Kay Barnes, do it!
