BASIC SAFETY RULESThe instructions given below cover normaloperation of your vehicle and must becarefully observed. By following theserules you will enhance your own safety andthe safety of those around you. You willalso maximize the life and utility of yourvehicle.

Two wheeled vehicles obviously do notprovide some of the protection provided byautomobiles, therefore it is essential thatyou wear appropriate protective clothing.Especially, never operate your vehiclewithout wearing your helmet, gloves, eyeprotection, a heavy jacket, sturdy footwear, and sturdy full length pants.

However, do not assume that even thebest clothing and helmet will protect you inthe event of an upset or a crash withanother vehicle. At best, this gear providessome protect ion f rom scrapes andscratches, but very little, if any, impactprotection.

Be sure that you meet all the requirementsprescribed by local law, including driver’slicense, minimum age, training, insurance, taxes, vehicle registration, license plate, etc.

When you first receive your vehicle, practice by riding in areas where there islittle traffic. Do not attempt to ride in heavytraffic until you are thoroughly experiencedand riding your vehicle has becomesecond nature to you.

Although this vehicle is legal for operationon freeways and expressways, i t isadvisable to not ride on these high speedhighways until you are thoroughly familiarwith your vehicle, and have attained a highdegree of skill in its operation.A new vehicle must be carefully broken in,see p.54 (BREAKING-IN).

Before starting the engine, make sure thatthe brakes, clutch, transmission andthrottle controls function properly and thatthe fuel and oil supply is adequate. The exhaust system, brakes, and someother parts of the vehicle become very hotduring operation. Do not touch any of theseparts.

Some medicines or drugs, i l legal orprescription, and alcohol significantlyincrease the risk of accidents. Do not ridewhile you are under the influence ofa lcoho l o r d rugs , be they i l l i c i t o rprescription.

Make sure you are in good physicalcondition and not ill before riding yourvehicle. Do not ride your vehicle when youare particularly tired or fatigued. Alcohol, drugs and fatigue are leading causes ofvehicle accidents. Many accidents are caused by the rider’sinexperience and lack of training. Do notride your vehicle until you have receivedtra in ing f rom a recognized t ra in ingorganization such as the Motorcycle SafetyFoundation. Remember that riding a twowheeled vehicle, though easy and fun, isquite different from driving a car. Do notassume that you can operate your vehiclesafely just because you are a competentautomobile driver.

Never lend your vehicle to others unlessyou are sure that they are competent andproperly licensed vehicle operators.

Observe all rules of the road. Particularlypay attention to all warning, regulatory andinformational signs.Avoid showing off (i.e., popping wheelies).Especially observe speed limits, rememberthat road conditions change with theweather and wet and icy pavements arepart icularly dangerous for vehicles, especial ly i f you are riding too fast.Remember that automobile drivers have ahard time seeing two wheeled vehicles, soalways give the automobile the right ofway, even if it is legally yours.

Before changing lanes, look over yourshoulder to make sure that the way isclear. Do not rely exclusively on the rear-view mirror: you may miscalculate thedistance and speed of a vehicle, or youmay even not see it at all.

Avoid obstacles that could damage thevehicle or make you lose control.

Do not tailgate, do not attempt to increaseyour gas mileage by following in the slipstream of cars or trucks in front of you.

In case of accident motorcycles, scootersand mopeds do not provide the samedegree o f p ro tec t ion ensured byautomobiles. The legs, in particular, areexposed the r isk o f be ing in ju red. However, the additional installation of legguards may actually increase the risk ofinjuries and their seriousness in case ofaccident.

Do not install leg guards available on themarket of spare parts and accessories.Non-compliance with these instructionsmay result in serious injuries or evendeath.

Always r ide with both hands on thehandlebars and feet on the footrests.

Never shift gear without using the clutch, ifthe vehicle is so equipped. Do not operatethe shif t lever or the other controlssuddenly or abruptly. Such misuse candamage the internal components of thevehicle and consequently cause seizure, loss of control, accidents and seriousinjuries or even death.

Remain in the seat when you are riding. Donot stand up or attempt to stretch while youare riding your vehicle. If you need to rest, pull over to the side of the road when it canbe safely done.

It is very important to your safety that yougive full attention to the riding task. Watchwhat you are doing, do not allow yourself tobe distracted by other cars, people orthings on the roadside, etc. Never smoke, eat, drink, read, etc. while riding yourvehicle. If you must consult a map, pullover when it can be done safely.

Use only the vehicle’s specific fuels andlubricants indicated in the “LUBRICANTCHART”; check the oil, fuel and coolantlevels regularly. If the throttle sticks open, it may cause acollision with another vehicle, or an upset.

If the throttle sticks, kill the engine with theengine stop switch located on the righthandlebar.

Do not attempt to restart the engine untilthe throttle has been repaired and worksperfectly. Failure to obey this warning canlead to a runaway with seriously injuries oreven death.

WARNINGIn the event of a throttle stickingemergency, always kill the engine usingthe engine stop switch located near thethrottle grip on the right handlebar.Never use your vehicle if the throttledoes not automatically fully return tothe idle position when the throttle gripis released. Contact your Local apriliaDealer for repairs. Failure to heed thiswarning can lead to a serious accidentand subsequent injury or even death.

If you and your vehicle are involved in anaccident, insure that there has been nodamage to the control levers, tubes, wires, braking system and other vital parts. If yourvehicle is involved in an accident, take itimmediately to your Local aprilia Dealerwho has the equipment and knowledge tocheck for accidental damage which maycompromise your safety.Your aprilia dealer is ready and able tohelp you with any safety problems that youmight have, but of course it is necessaryfor you to report any malfunctions to yourmechanic in order for him to help you.

Do not use your vehicle if it is damaged. Adamaged vehicle may become unstable orpresent other problems which can increasethe risk of accident, and therefore ofserious injury or even death.

Do not attempt to modify the position, angle or color of your license plate. Do notcover it with even a clear plastic covering.Do not modify any of the safety equipmentof your vehicle, especially such safetyrelated items as directional indicators, rearview mirrors, lights or horns.

Any modification to your vehicle willinvalidate the warranty.Do not modify your engine in an attempt toincrease the horsepower. This can result inirreparable damage to the engine, as wellas degradation of the performance andhandling of the vehicle which could lead toan upset, and serious injury or even death.

Have your vehicle repaired only withoriginal parts, and use only original apriliaor aprilia approved accessories. The useof aftermarket accessories and parts canseriously compromise the safety of yourvehicle as well as its performance andserviceability. Any modification whichaffects performance or safety voids yourwarranty completely.Tampering with the emissions or noisecontrol systems on your vehicle is againstthe law, and can be punished by largefines.

In some jurisdictions, it can even lead tothe confiscation of your vehicle.

This vehicle was not designed to beequipped with a sidecar or to be used totow trailers or other vehicles. aprilia does not manufacture sidecars ortrailers and therefore cannot predict theef fects of such accessor ies on themanoeuvrability or stability of the vehicle: itcan only warn that such effects may benegative and that any damage to thevehicle components caused by the use ofsuch accessories will not be covered bythe warranty.

Never race other vehicles with yourvehicle.

Brake with both the front and rear brakes. The use of one brake only for suddenbraking may cause the vehicle to skid ormake the rider lose control of the vehicleitself.

When riding down a steep hill, use theengine as a brake by selecting the samegear, or a lower gear, than you would useto climb the hill. Use front and rear brakessparingly.

Always ride at the appropriate speed andavoid unnecessary hard acceleration. Thisnot only is safer, but also reduces fuelconsumption and increases the life of thevehicle.

If you must ride your vehicle in rainyweather, or on loose surfaces, rememberthat traction is greatly reduced. Underthese conditions, all handling of the vehiclemust be done gradually and smoothly.Sudden acceleration, braking or turningmay make you lose control of your vehicle. When traction is reduced, accelerate andslow using your vehicle’s engine brakinginsofar as possible. Avoid rapid, harshapplication of the brakes.

Gradually open and close the throttle, toavoid spinning or skidding the rear wheel.

On rough road surfaces, slow down andride with particular care.

Try to avo id w ide open th ro t t leaccelerations, unless they are necessaryfor such things as passing.

Don’t allow your engine to “lug,” that is, runat too low an rpm. Shift down to a lowergear. Also, don’t over-rev the engine.Observe the redline on the tachometer.

Remember that excessively aggressivecornering can cause your vehicle’s tires tolose sideways traction, which can result inan upset and serious injury or even death.

Always observe posted and statutoryspeed limits, but do not assume that youcan ride as fast as the speed limit under allroad conditions. Slowing down a little cangreatly increase your safety under all roadconditions.Do not ride your vehicle off road.

Do not tamper with the muffler system orthe emissions control system of yourvehicle. This is not only bad for theenvironment, it can subject you to seriouspenalties.

CLOTHINGBefore riding your vehicle, ensure that yourriding gear is in good condition. To beeffective, your helmet must fit properly, andthe visor or other eye protection must beclean.

Both research and experience have shownthat drivers of other vehicles often do notsee vehicles or riders. In order to makeyourself more conspicuous to thesedrivers, wear bright reflective clothing, such as a reflective vest, or clothing withreflective sections sewn into the jacket, pants and gloves. Be particular aware ofapproaching automobiles and trucks thatmight be trying to turn left in front of you. Many vehicle accidents are caused by anopposing automobile driver making a leftturn without warning in front of the vehicle.

Inevitably, the driver will look right at you,and yet swear that they did not see youbefore they turned directly into your path.Ride alert!

Wear protective clothing, preferably in lightand/or reflecting colors. In this way you willmake yourself more visible to the otherdrivers, thus notably reducing the risk ofbeing knocked down, and you will be moreprotected in case of fall.

Always wear your crash helmet. Manyaccidents are fatal because of injuries tothe head.

This clothing should be very tight-fittingand fastened at the wrists and ankles.Strings, belts and ties should not behanging loose; prevent these and otherobjects from interfering with driving bygetting entangled with moving parts ordriving mechanisms.

Do not carry sharp objects in your pocketsthat could be dangerous in case of anupset, for example, pens or mechanicalpencils, etc. Also, make sure that yourpassengers follow this recommendation.

ACCESSORIESThe owner of the vehicle is responsible forthe choice, installation and use of anyaccessory.

The ins ta l la t ion o f inappropr ia teaccessories or the overloading of thevehicle may result in the instability of thevehicle itself and cause accidents withconsequent risk of serious injuries or evendeath. Windshields could be particularlydangerous, as they can break and injure orcut the rider in case of accident. In case ofdoubts with regard to any accessory youwould like to install or any load you wouldlike to carry, previously consult your Localaprilia Dealer.

Avoid installing accessories that coverhorns or lights or that could impair theirfunctions, limit the suspension stroke andthe steering angle, hamper the operation ofthe controls and reduce the distance fromthe ground and the angle of inclination inturns.

Avoid using accessories that hamperaccess to the controls, since this canpro long reac t ion t imes dur ing anemergency.

Fairings and windshields installed on thevehicle may produce aerodynamic forcesthat will affect the stability of the vehicleduring use, especially at high speeds.

Make sure that anything you carry on yourvehicle is securely attached, and cannotcome lose and jam the wheels, forks, etc.Do not install any electrical accessories, and do not modify the electrical system ofyour vehicle. Anything that could cause anelectrical overload or other fault couldcause the vehicle to suddenly stop, thelights to dim or quit, or the horn and othersafety accessories not to work. Use onlygenuine aprilia accessories.

LOADDo not overload your vehicle. Attachluggage or packages as close as possibleto the center of your vehicle and distributethe load from side to side as evenly aspossible, to keep imbalance to a minimum.Remember that loads tend to loosen withriding, so frequently check the security ofyour load.

Do not hang anything from your vehiclehandlebars, fenders, or forks, because thiswill upset the handling of your vehicle, andcould prevent you from avoiding anaccident. Failure to heed this warning canlead to an upset with subsequent seriousinjury or even death.

Do not ride with your crash helmet hungfrom the strap because it could easily foulthe wheels, fenders, or forks, causing anupset and subsequent serious injury oreven death.Carry a passenger only if your vehicle isequipped wi th passenger footpegs, handgrips for the passenger to hold on to,and a passenger saddle.

When carrying a passenger, rememberthat your vehicle’s handling is degraded, that the brakes are less efficient, and thecenter of gravity is higher and further to therear.

This makes it more likely that the frontwheel wi l l come up of f the ground, especially on acceleration. Therefore, youshould avoid hard acceleration and hardbraking. Many accidents are caused byinexperienced riders carrying passengers.Remember that allowance must be madefor the extra weight of the passenger for alldriving maneuvers.Avoid abrupt and excessive acceleration.Always slow down in time and calculatelonger s topp ing and maneuver ingdistances. Non-compliance with theseinstructions may lead to the overturning ofthe vehicle or to other accidents withconsequent serious injuries or even death.

Never carry loosely packaged items, makesure that everything that you carry on yourvehicle is carefully secured.Do not carry packages which protrude fromthe luggage rack or which cover any of thesignal lights, the headlight, or the horn.Never carry animals or children on theglove compartment or on the luggage rack.

Never exceed the labeled maximum loadfor each saddlebag.

Overloading your vehicle seriously reducesits stability and maneuverability and canlead to an upset with subsequent seriousinjury or death.

DISK BRAKES

WARNINGThe brakes are the parts that mostensure your safety and for this reasonthey must always be perfectly working;check them before every trip.

A dirty disk will soil the pads, leading toloss of braking efficiency. Dirty padsmust be replaced, while dirty disksmust be cleaned with a high-qualitydegreaser.Have brake fluid changed at an apriliaAuthorized Dealerevery two years.

If in doubt about the proper operation ofthe clutch or if you are not able toperform routine checks, do not hesitateto contact an aprilia Authorized Dealer.

NOTE This vehicle is equipped withfront and rear disk brakes operated byindependent hydraul ic c ircui ts. Thefollowing information applies to bothbraking systems.

Brake fluid level decreases gradually asthe brake pads wear down.

The brake reservoirs are positioned on thehandlebar, near the brake lever couplings.

Periodically check brake fluid level, see(CHECK) and pads for wear, see page 63(CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FORWEAR).

WARNINGDo not use the vehicle if the brakingsystem is leaking fluid.

CHECKTo check the brake fluid level, proceed asfollows:MIN = minimum level.

◆ Place the vehicle on the center stand, see page 55 (PLACING THE VEHICLEON THE STAND)

◆ Rotate the handlebar, so that the fluid (1)contained in the brake reservoir isparallel to the "MIN" mark stamped onthe glass gauge (2).

◆ Make sure that the brake fluid containedin the reservoir (1) exceeds the "MIN"mark stamped on the glass gauge (2).

WARNINGDo not ride the vehicle if the level isbelow "MIN" mark.

CAUTIONBrake fluid level decreases as the brakepads wear down.

If the fluid is below the "MIN" mark:◆ Check the brake pads for wear, see

page 63 (CHECKING THE BRAKEPADS FOR WEAR).

If the pads and/or the disk do not needreplacing:

COOLANT

CAUTIONDo not ride when coolant is below theminimum level MIN.Check the coolant level every 2000 km(1250 mi) and after long trips; have thecoolant changed by an aprilia AuthorizedDealer every 2 years.

WARNINGCoolant is toxic when ingested. Contactwith eyes or skin may cause irritation. In the event of contact with eyes or skin, rinse repeatedly with abundant waterand seek medical advice. In the event ofingestion, induce vomiting, rinse mouthand throat with abundant water andseek medical advice immediately.

DO NOT RELEASE INTO THEENVIRONMENT.

KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.

Take care not to spill coolant onto hotengine parts. It may ignite and produceinvisible flames. Wear latex glovesduring servicing. Contact an apriliaAuthorized Dealer for the replacement.

Coolant mixture is a 50% solution of waterand antifreeze. This is the ideal solution for most operatingtemperatures and provides good corrosionprotection.

This solution is also suited to the warmseason, as the mixture is less prone toevaporative loss and will reduce the needfor top-ups.In addition, less water evaporation meansfewer mineral salts depositing in theradiator , which he lps preserve theefficiency of the cooling system.

When temperature drops below zerodegrees centigrade, check the coolingsystem frequently and add more antifreeze(up to 60% maximum) to the solution.Use distilled water in the coolant mixture.Tap water will damage the engine.

WARNINGDo not remove the expansion tank plug(1) when the engine is hot, sincecoolant is very hot and under pressure. If it gets in contact with the skin or withclothes, it may cause severe burnsand/or damage.

If not so:

◆ Loosen the filler plug (1) (by turning itcounter-clockwise), without removing it.

◆ Wait a few seconds in order to releaseany residual pressure.

◆ Unscrew and remove the plug (1).

WARNINGCoolant is toxic when ingested. Contactwith eyes or skin may cause irritation.Do not put your fingers or any other objectinto the filler opening in order to ensurethat there is coolant.

CAUTIONDo not add any additives or otherproducts. If a funnel or other system is used fortopping up, make sure that i t isperfectly clean.

CAUTIONNever top up beyond the "MAX" levelmark or coolant will leak out when theengine is running.

◆ Top up with coolant, see page 81(LUBRICANT CHART) up to just belowthe "MAX" mark.

◆ Refit the filler plug (1).

CAUTIONIf coolant level drops too quickly or thetank is empty, check the cooling circuitfor leaks. Contact an aprilia AuthorizedDealer for the repair operation.

TIRESThis vehicle is equipped with tubeless tires.

WARNINGPeriodically check the tire inflationpressure at room temperature, see page78 (TECHNICAL DATA).

Measuring pressure on hot tires willlead to inaccurate measurement. It isespecially important to measure tirepressure before and after a long trip.Overinflated tires will not absorb bumpswhen riding on rough road surfaces andresult ing vibration is transferredthrough the handlebar, giving a harshride and reducing tire grip especiallydur ing corner ing. Converse ly ,underinflation will put more stress onthe sidewalls (1) and the tire may slip onthe rim or even come off the rim, leading to loss of control.

The tires could come off the rims underharsh braking. Finally, the vehicle couldskid during cornering.

Inspect tire surface condition and checkfor wear, as worn tires lead to poor roadholding and handling.

Some of the tires approved for this vehicleare equipped with wear indicators. Thereare several kinds of wear indicators. Formore information on how to check thetires for wear, contact your Dealer.Visually inspect the tires for wear andhave them changed if worn.

Old tires, even if not completely worndown, may become hard and provide poorgrip. In this case, have the tires changed.

Have a tire changed when worn orpunctured, if the puncture in the tread islarger than 0.2 in (5 mm).

Have the wheels balanced after eachtire repair.Tires should be changed with tires ofdifferent type and model as specified bythe manufacturer , see page 78(TECHNICAL DATA); using differenttires than the specified ones willadversely affect vehicle handling.

Do not install tube tires on tubeless tirerims or vice versa.

Make sure that the tires always havetheir valve (2) sealing caps on, toprevent them from suddenly going flat.

Change, repair, maintenance andbalancing operations are very importantand should be carried out by qualifiedtechnicians with appropriate tools.

Have your tires and wheels serviced atan aprilia Authorized Dealeror a tire specialist.

CATALYTIC MUFFLER

WARNINGDo not park the vehicle (catalytic version)close to dried brushwood or in placeswhere children are likely to come incontact with it, because the catalyticmuffler heats to very high operatingtemperature. Be very careful and avoidany contact until it has cooled down.

The catalytic version of this vehicle mounts amuffler with a "platinum-rhodium" two-waymetal catalytic converter.

This device provides for the oxidation of theCO (carbon monoxide) and of the HC(unburned hydrocarbons) contained in theexhaust gases, changing them into carbondioxide and steam, respectively.

The high temperature of the exhaust gas dueto the catalytic reaction also burns oil particles, keeping the muffler clean and eliminatingsmoke. To ensure long trouble-free operation of thecatalytic converter and to reduce problemsrelating the fouling of the thermal unit and ofthe exhaust, avoid covering long distanceswith the engine running constantly at a lowrpm. It is sufficient to alternate these periods withperiods in which the engine runs at relativelyhigh rpm, even if only for a few seconds, butrather frequently. The recommendations above are especiallyimportant when cold starting the engine. Inthis case, the rpm suitable for "triggering" thecatalytic reaction are easily reached, but it isimportant to ensure that the cylindertemperature is at least 122 °F (50 °C); thistakes place a few seconds after starting.

CAUTIONUse unleaded fuel only. Lead will damagethe catalytic converter.

EXHAUST MUFFLER

WARNINGTampering with the noise controlsystem is prohibited.

Owners are warned that the law may prohibit:– The removal or disconnection of any device or

element of design incorporated into any newvehicle to limit the noise emissions before itssale or delivery to the final purchaser or while itis in use except if carried out for maintenance,repair or replacement purposes;

– the use of the vehicle after such device orelement of design has been removed orrendered inoperative by any person.

Check the exhaust muffler and the mufflerpipes, to make sure that they show no tracesof rust or holes and that the exhaust system isoperating properly.

If the exhaust system noise increases, contactan aprilia Authorized Dealer immediately.

WARNINGIf you have to brake, put on both brakesin order to obtain smooth deceleration, properly exerting pressure on thebraking parts.By putting on the front brake or rearbrake only, you considerably reduce thebraking force, and risk locking onewheel, consequently losing grip.

To stop uphill, decelerate completelyand use the brakes to keep the vehicleat standstill.Do not use engine braking or the clutchotherwise the converter may overheat.

When approaching a turn, slow downand brake and take the turn a tmoderate, constant speed or accelerateslightly; braking in a turn will greatlyincrease your chances of skidding.Continued application of the brakes onlong downhill grades may cause thebrakes to overheat, thereby reducingbraking efficiency. Shift down to useengine braking and apply both brakesintermittently.Never ride downhill with the engine off!

WARNINGIf the road surface is wet or slippery(snow, ice, mud, etc.), ride slowly, donot brake or swerve suddenly, or youmay lose grip and fall.Watch out for obstacles or suddenchanges in the road surface.Uneven roads, rails, manhole covers, signs painted on the road surface andbuilding site metal plates become rathersl ippery in the rain. Avoid theseobstacles as much as possible, drivesmoothly and bend the vehicle as littleas possible.

WARNINGSignal your intention to change lane orturn in good t ime using the turnindicators and avoid sudden swervingor movements.Switch off the direction indicators assoon as you have changed direction.

Be extremely careful when passing orbeing passed. When riding in the rain, the spraythrown up by the tires of large vehicleswill reduce your vision; the air wavecreated by a large vehicle may makeyou lose control of the vehicle.
