SWSPGA Members and Apprentices, Despite the heavy frosts and rainy weekends early in the year most of the facilities in the Southwest Section’s desert regions are indicating that 2013 has been a positive year through the first four months. We are hopeful that this will carry into the cooler climates of our Section as the year continues. There still remain many signs that there is not yet a full economic recovery in the golf industry highlighted by the struggles noted in the press regarding the major metropolitan municipal facilities and the continued public access being allowed at several historically private clubs. At the Southwest Section it was an interesting year as we attempted to provide a full complement of member services, despite the staff reductions made prior to the start of the fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). While stretched very thin, much like nearly every facility in our industry, we were able to accomplish several positive things in the current year. The website received a nice “upgrade” through the efforts of Jamey Lewis and our officers, Board of Directors and staff. There was progress made with our revised pilot program with online tee times through our allied associations. We have continued to grow our Foundation’s activities and outreach, have supported the growth of the game through Get Golf Ready, Special Olympics Programs and other facility outreach. We continue to provide tournament programs for our members and the junior golfers of all levels in our Section. I know many of you have seen the promotions for the Drive Chip and Putt competition being orchestrated by Augusta National, PGA, USGA and 11 Regional Qualifying Cities. Fortunately the SWSPGA was selected as one of the regions and we have been able to secure 10 local and one regional site for our juniors to compete in this event. REGISTRATION DEADLINE is April 30, 2013---if you have any interest in having your juniors, family members or children compete in this event please visit http://www.drivechipandputt.com/ . This event and our participation has all come together in the last 30 days and we are excited to be a part of the inaugural year of this program.

I know many of you have had an opportunity to meet with Bob Doyle, the Southwest Sections Regional Player Development Manager. It is hard to believe Bob has been here a year already. I know he has worked hard to visit a significant number of clubs and professionals. Bob has learned a great deal about what seems to work in our section as it relates to growing the game and customer retention. I hope you would consider Bob a resource for attempting to try new things at your facilities----most of his ideas have been taken from members of our section, but he will not be shy about helping you work on growing your business. Please stop by and say hello to Bob at the Annual Meeting. As we move forward toward a new fiscal year and our annual meeting (June 10, 2013 at the Wildhorse Pass Hotel and Casino) we are continually interested in reaching out to the membership to fill leadership positions within the board. As there is every year, there will be four board positions available and as occurs every other year we will elect a new secretary for our association. If you are interested in “running” for a Board Position or for the Position of Secretary please let me know by telephone or email. In addition, if you have an interest in serving on a committee please let me know as the committee structure, goals and activities are the key board items at the first get together following the annual meeting in June. At this year’s annual meeting we will have the opportunity to share the activities of our Section with the new CEO of the PGA of America Pete Bevacqua. Pete and the current officers of the PGA of America have made some significant changes at the National Level in the last six months and I know that he will be interested in sharing some of these changes with our membership as well as connecting with you and learning more about how the golf industry is different in the West. Respectfully,

Curt Hudek, PGA Executive Director

Flagstaff Ranch Golf Club Facility Description: Flagstaff Ranch Golf Club stretches across 454 acres and golf takes center stage. Rules of Golf

Applicable Rules – March 17, 2013 – The Rulings

Player A’s ball lies in an area marked as a lateral water hazard near a burrowing animal hole. Player A lifts the ball and drops a substituted ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief within the lateral water hazard. The ball does not roll outside the one club-length area.

Player A plays the dropped ball.

**In stroke play, Player A incurred a penalty of 3 strokes, assuming no serious breach for playing from a wrong place. Relief from a burrowing animal hole is not available for a ball in a lateral water hazard. In this situation, the only applicable Rule is Rule 26-1, one penalty stroke for relief and an additional penalty of two strokes for playing from a wrong place. In match play, the penalty is loss of hole. (See Decision 20-7/2.)

Player B’s tee shot crosses the margin of an area marked as a lateral water hazard 50 yards from the teeing

ground and comes to rest about 200 yards from the teeing ground. The lateral water hazard is mostly a dry wash with little water and much vegetation. Player B moves a loose impediment near his ball and then elects to take an unplayable, dropping the ball within two club-lengths of the ball position, not nearer the hole. Player B’s next stroke does not exit the lateral water hazard and, again, Player B elects to take an unplayable, dropping the ball within two club-lengths of the ball position, not nearer the hole. Player B’s next stroke lands on the putting green. Player B completes the hole in two additional strokes and continues the round.

**For completeness, let’s review the actions of Player B relative to the Rules of Golf. In stroke play, Player B incurred a two-stroke penalty for moving a loose impediment in the lateral

water hazard and two penalties of three strokes for the two drops in the lateral water hazard (a wrong place). When the ball was lifted from a lateral water hazard and dropped, the applicable Rule was Rule 26-1. Player B did not proceed in accordance with Rule 26-1.

(See Decision 20-7/2.) Most importantly, since Player B played his stroke to the putting green from a

location significantly closer to the hole than where required by any of the Rule 26-1 options and did not correct his mistake, Player B is disqualified.

Player Development Message: The start of a New Year, peak golf season for some while others have just started their offseason. Despite seasonal differences we all have the opportunity to be experts in golf for those we touch at our courses, clubs, and communities. I hope one of your 2013 resolutions is to evaluate the player development plan at your facility and to take positive steps to add new programs and events this coming season. Your efforts will increase play and increase your value. In my role as Player Development Manager I’m thrilled to see the great work that is being done to grow the passion for our game here in the Southwest Section. We have PGA Members that have been innovative in creating programs and events that meet the goals of Golf 2.0. We have many professionals that really understand the value in retaining avid players and attracting new and returning players. There is no shortage of efforts to grow golf and we should all be appreciative of the efforts that many are making each and every day. Our SWPGA Board has decided to make annual award to a member that exemplifies efforts in the area of Player Development. We share a common mission to grow the game of golf, and like recognizing our best players and best teachers we should recognize exceptional efforts in player development. This year I congratulate Josh Doxtator, PGA Head Professional at Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia, for his exemplary efforts for being recognized as SWPGA Player Development Award Winner. With one program Josh has found a method to reach core players, to engage lapsed golfers and to develop new players. The story of the G.A.L.S. program that is has evolved to include over 220 this season is an inspiration and a shining example of what PGA experts are doing at their facilities. No matter where you are in your player development planning process please contact me if I can help provide you resources or ideas that will make an impact for your facility growing the number of players and creating a fun and welcome atmosphere. Happy New Year! I hope you and those you touch hit many more good shots in 2013!

Quiet Mind Golf ™ is a revolutionary golf mental training program developed by Steven Yellin. There is one process in the mind that produces fluid motion in the body, and golfers access that process when they are locked in and playing well. Steven has developed a simple program that teaches golfers how to access that process by design, rather than usually experiencing it just by chance. The results are better ball striking, fewer putts and lower scores. Steven has presented his program at the 2012 LPGA Western Regional Conference and 2012 Golf Magazine Top 100 Teaching Summit. He has developed a Quiet Mind Golf PGA/LPGA certification program that many of the leading teaching professionals in the country have attended, including:

• Rick McCord, a Golf Magazine Top 100 instructor since 1992 • John Lyberger, Director of Golf at Congressional CC • Shelly Liddick, LPGA 2012 National Coach of the Year • Marvol Barnard, Golf Digest Top 50 Women Instructor

Steven’s company has worked with professional athletes in seven sports. His websites are:

• quietmindgolf.com • quietmindbaseball.com • quietmindathletics.com • zonetraining.net

Each website contains many testimonials to this revolutionary program. Steven is also partnering with one of the top golf instructors in the world and will be bringing out his program out on an international scale in the near future.

Buddy Biancalana Biography Buddy Biancalana was a 1978 1st round draft choice by the Kansas City Royals. He made it to the Major Leagues for the first time in 1982, and became somewhat of a household name, thanks to his “zone experience” and stellar play in the 1985 World Series, for the World Champion Royals. Although not the starting shortstop for most of that season, in the World Series he played the best baseball of his career as he outplayed his counterpart, Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. His notoriety heightened from appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and the Today Show. Buddy enjoyed the glory of a great athletic performance. Since PMPM’s inception, he and Steven have trained athletes in MLB, NBA, PGA, LPGA, NHL, PBA and ATP tennis along with 13 amateur sports Buddy is the co-author of The 7 Secrets of World Class Athletes, a book containing scientifically proven, revolutionary knowledge about motion.
