Celebrate Earth Day with these Springy Selections
As the weather gets warmer and the frosts of winter
recede, it is the time to start thinking about getting
the garden planted. We have just the books to
get you inspired and growing delicious fruits and
vegetables this year. Even for the most urban of city
dwellers, growing a garden is not out of reach. Just
check out the second updated edition of the classic
All New Square Foot Gardening: the Revolutionary
Way to Grow More in Less Space by Mel Bartholomew. Bartholomew’s
multi-million volume selling book guides gardeners new and
experienced through the process of growing a lot of produce, even in
the smallest of spaces.
For those with a little more room and the inclination
to expand beyond just a small backyard garden, take
a look at The Nourishing Homestead: One Back-
to-the-Land Family's Plan for Cultivating Soil, Skills,
and Spirit by husband and wife team Ben and Penny
Hewitt. The Hewitts’ book provides a template for
self-sufficiency that includes not only growing food,
but also animal husbandry, foraging for wild foods
and creating a self-sustaining lifestyle.
Finally, after you’ve grown all those delicious
fruits and vegetables, what do you do with them?
Luckily, award-winning chef and southern native
Hugh Acheson provides recipes for a wide range of
produce from all four seasons in his cookbook The
Broad Fork. So get planting, get harvesting and get
eating—with a little help from your library!

Adult Poetry ContestApr 1-Apr 30
The bread loaves are resting in
their pans,
Their tops taut bellies,
Pale in the dim, early kitchen.
I drape a striped towel
Over yeast’s work,
the fullness of promise.
But I left the cutting board,
the red-handled knife,
my own breakfast,
to dash down these lines
about rising dough in grey light.
The apple will wait, contained,
slick, cold in its uncut ruddy skin,
until I come back.
These words won’t. Uninked they
would drift
like the faint scent of baking
out the open window
not even a trail of crumbs
to show where the poem went.
