Arlington Public Schools prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, creed, color, religion, gender, age, economic status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, genetic information, gender identity or expression, and/or disability. This policy provides equal access to courses and programs, counseling services, physical education and athletics, vocational education, instructional materials and extra-curricular activities. Violations of this policy should be reported to the Assistant Superintendent, Administrative Services at 703-228-6008 or the Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources at 703-228-6110.

October 2017Dear Families,

Congratulations! Your child has reached the last year of elementary school and will soon begin the journey to middle and high school. In Arlington, you are fortunate to have high-performing neighborhood middle schools along with a number of options at the middle school level. These choices are designed to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the whole child. As you study the options, keep the unique qualities of your child in mind. Doing so will help you find the school that best meets the individual strengths, interests and needs of your child.

Please begin discussing with your child the opportunities for taking higher-level mathematics and foreign-language courses in middle school. We know that a small nudge in the right direction can foster high expectations and help guide your child to reach his/her full potential. Research shows that students who take Algebra I, while still in middle school, are ready to take the higher-level mathematics and science courses in high school that will prepare them for success in their post-secondary pursuits. Similarly, taking foreign-language courses in middle school begins to prepare students for more academically-rigorous courses in high school. Ultimately, this course work could earn them college credits while still in high school.

I encourage your active participation in the planning process. In middle school, an assigned school counselor will be working with your child annually to develop a six-year academic plan that reflects his or her interests and the courses required for graduation. A copy of the plan will be sent home for your review and input. Talk with the school principal, counselor and teachers about what supports are available in the school. Share the thoughts and the aspirations that your child has expressed. All of this planning should be directly focused on your child’s goals for life after graduation.

I would like to call to your attention our Aspire2Excellence initiative, which underscores the importance of planning now for your child and his/her course of study in middle and high school, and beyond. Through Aspire2Excellence, we have developed several tools to assist you and your child. Please visit our academic planning webpage at apsva.us/academicplanning to learn more about opportunities for your child.

Stay up to date with the latest APS news at www.apsva.us, through our social media channels or by downloading the APS app. The “Engage with APS” section of the website makes it easier to find information about current community engagement opportunities and to provide feedback. Community input and coordinated collaboration is a vital part of the process as APS continues to grow and make decisions that will positively shape the future for our students. We look forward to working with you to ensure that the school experience your child has at APS will be enriching and successful.

Sincerely,

Patrick K. Murphy, Ed.D.Superintendent

GUNSTON MIDDLE SCHOOLCountywide Spanish Partial-Immersion Program andMontessori Middle Years Program2700 South Lang Street, Arlington, Virginia 22206

Dr. Lori Wiggins, Principal703-228-6900; 703-519-9183 (Fax)gunston.apsva.us

This school is fully accredited by the State of Virginia.

Gunston Middle School is an exceptional, United Nations-like middle school. Gunston is home to three distinct but interconnected programs, a partial Spanish-Immersion Program, a Montessori Middle

Years Program, and a Traditional Middle School Program. Additionally, there are more than 50 different countries represented in its very diverse student body.

The expectation is that every Gunston student will attempt the most rigorous coursework available in order to have the most options for high school and beyond. The number of Gunston students completing high school credit classes in middle school is high and continues to rise each year. The goal is that students leave middle school with high school credits so that they may be positively positioned to receive an advanced diploma. The staff at Gunston works with the school community – each student, each parent, and each faculty member – to achieve these goals through collaboration and in an atmosphere that fosters respect and understanding.

In addition to a challenging academic program, students at Gunston have many extra-curricular and co-curricular activities from which to select that support their social, emotional, and intellectual development. Students have the option to participate in interscholastic athletics and have the choice of more than 25 different clubs and after-school activities. Additionally, Gunston Middle School is a joint-use facility in partnership with Arlington County Department of Parks & Recreation, which sponsors an after-school recreation program for teens.

Gunston also has an award-winning fine arts and technology program. The students who participate in art, drama, music, and video journalism are consistently honored in local and statewide competitions for their hard work and talents. The collaboration among the teachers creates many opportunities for students to fuse content coursework with elective options for unique and creative learning experiences.

The outstanding staff at Gunston is dedicated to creating educational opportunities for students that challenge academically and stimulate intellectual curiosity. Students benefit from the spirit of cooperation between home and school, making Gunston a place where all children succeed. At Gunston Middle School, the quest: success!

H-B WOODLAWN SECONDARY PROGRAM A Countywide Program 4100 Vacation Lane, Arlington, Virginia 22207

Dr. Casey Robinson, Principal 703-228-6363; 703-558-0317 (Fax) hbwoodlawn.apsva.us

Student choice is the central focus of H-B Woodlawn’s alternative secondary program. Students must decide how to use their time wisely to meet their obligations. The amount of “unsupervised time”

increases gradually from grade 6 to grade 12. To make this offer of freedom work, the school trusts the good intentions of its students, and students learn to reciprocate with a sufficient degree of personal responsibility.

All students enter the program at H-B Woodlawn with varying degrees of independence and self-motivation. The program’s faculty and staff work with students as individuals, in small groups, and as grade levels to empower them to have control over their educational program. Accordingly, students are responsible for their actions. In 1971, “a word to the wise is sufficient” was selected as the school motto to reflect the association of freedom with responsibility.

The H-B Woodlawn program adheres to three pillars: Caring Community, Self-Governance, and Self-Directed Learning. Through student-led conferences, student-initiated electives and clubs, and weekly Town Meetings, where each student, teacher, and parent in attendance has an equal voice, the community works together to help all students develop and pursue their educational goals.

Experience has shown that H-B Woodlawn students approach college with a mature, realistic understanding of their interests and abilities, and with a heightened commitment to learning for its inherent value.

THOMAS JEFFERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL An International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme World School 125 South Old Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia 22204

Keisha Boggan, Principal 703-228-5900; 703-979-3744 (Fax) jefferson.apsva.us

This school is fully accredited by the State of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School is an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP), authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in the spring of 2007.

The programme, for all students grades 6-8, is designed to expose students to a global academic program that promotes interdisciplinary approaches to learning and critical thinking. As the only IB Middle Years Programme in Arlington, students continue to be provided with a framework of academic challenge in addition to life-long learning skills. This program “offers an educational approach that embraces, yet transcends, traditional school subjects.” All students receive their core academic instruction from a team of teachers.

Students participate in community projects and service activities; an International Festival; and an International Film Day. Jefferson offers face-to-face World Languages instruction as an elective beginning in the sixth grade. Students at Jefferson conduct student-led conferences where students lead the discus-sion with their parents/guardians and advisory teacher about their academics.

Thomas Jefferson is unique for many reasons, one of which is its design and operation as a joint-use facility. The school enjoys a cooperative relationship with the Arlington County Department of Parks & Recreation. In 2017, Jefferson students were recognized, locally and nationally, for their hard work and dedication. Students participated and placed at the NOVA Regional Science and Engineering Fair, the Countywide Track Meet, and the Countywide Swim Meet. Jefferson students also received the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Silver Medal, first place in the countywide APS Martin Luther King, Jr. Liter-ary and Visual Arts contest, second place at the SchoolNext Design competition, and won the Letters about Literacy Award.

Thomas Jefferson provides a child-centered approach to continuous learning. Interdisciplinary teaming, flexible sched-uling and a teacher-advisor program are integral parts of the school’s program. The staff at Thomas Jefferson works continu-ally to create an exciting and productive middle school program where all students are nurtured and challenged to achieve at the highest possible levels. At Thomas Jefferson Middle School, we learn together to understand and improve ourselves, our futures, and our world.

KENMORE MIDDLE SCHOOL Powered by STEAMArts & Communications Technology Focus 200 South Carlin Springs Road, Arlington, Virginia 22204

David McBride, Interim Principal 703-228-6800; 703-998-3069 (Fax) kenmore.apsva.us

This school is fully accredited by the State of Virginia.

Kenmore Middle School is an arts and technology focus school that is powered by STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). Art is a universal cultural phenomenon that binds people together, and

technology is an equalizer allowing shared access to information and opportunity. At Kenmore, these elements combine across content areas and allow students to understand and approach the curriculum via innovative and creative practices.

Students at Kenmore are challenged to create, communicate, connect and inquire throughout the school day through methods that reach traditional and non-traditional learners. Capitalizing on the school’s twenty-three-year legacy of arts and technology integration, Kenmore has pushed forward its focus to include STEAM. During the summer of 2017, the school underwent renovations that included a new fabrication lab for Design Thinking & Robotics classes, expanded classrooms to increase capacity, a retrofitted multipurpose room, and an upgraded community club room. Throughout the day, students work in small groups on shared tasks that often combine technology, visual art, drama, music and movement—as well as science, engineering, and math. Kenmore showcases its arts focus with ten major shows per year for music, drama, and dance performances as well as its annual Coffeehouse and FocusFest.

Kenmore is an inclusive school community. Social and emotional development is supported through a systematic approach to supporting positive behavior (PBIS). Students are reminded to show their Cougar PRIDE through incentives, community service, as well as their work with their teacher advisors. Academic intervention is supported by flexible teacher advisory groupings, as well as extra electives and after-school support.

All students have access to iPads, SMART boards, interactive response systems, as well as a television studio and a variety of computers and software applications that support learning

WILLIAMSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL2017, 2015 Governor’s Award for Educational ExcellenceVa. Board of Education 2014 Excellence Award3600 North Harrison Street, Arlington, Virginia 22207

Bryan Boykin, Principal703-228-5450; 703-536-2870 (Fax)williamsburg.apsva.us

This school is fully accredited by the State of Virginia.

Williamsburg Middle School, dedicated in 1955, is an integral part of the solid educational program in Arlington. Named after one of the most historic cities in the United States, the school strives to live up to the

legacy of that strong heritage by preserving the best of the past and leading students toward the future.

Williamsburg challenges students to learn in an interdisciplinary environment that is organized by teams within the school. Dedicated faculty work with students in and out of the classroom providing a successful transition between elementary and high school. The school’s academic success can be attributed in large part to a highly-qualified and dedicated staff and the strong support and active involvement of parents. Williamsburg prepares students for higher education by celebrating diversity, implementing character education, and providing staff and students with 21st century technology.

Williamsburg’s program consists of a grade-level team approach for learning where students can grow and develop academically, socially, emotionally and physically. Teachers, counselors and administrators have worked together to design educational activities for the middle school student that are child-centered and give students the opportunity to become thoughtful, productive and contributing members of society in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect.

Williamsburg has an outstanding fine arts program. Students are consistently recognized for superior achievement locally and statewide. An extensive after-school program reflects the interests and needs of students. Activities include enrichment and remediation, academic, service and interest clubs, and intramural and interscholastic sports.

Williamsburg strives to develop lifelong learners who are civic-minded and culturally sensitive in an environment that is safe and supportive.

Registering Your Child for Middle School

CURRENT ARLINGTON STUDENTSSELECTION OF COURSES/ACADEMIC PLANNINGTo ease the transition from elementary to middle school, middle school counselors visit the elementary schools to meet with fifth grade students in late February and early March. Parent information sessions are also held to assist parents with academic planning and understanding middle school courses. The 2018-19 Middle School Program of Studies (POS) will be available in February at the elementary and middle schools and on the “Parents” section of the website at www.apsva.us. The POS gives general and specific information about curricular offerings and services at the middle school level. Each fifth grader will work with the classroom teacher, school counselor and parents to select courses for sixth grade. A Course Request Form (CRF) will be completed, approved by the parent and sent to the middle school.

Students develop a 4–6 Year Academic Plan at the middle school level that follows them to high school. Each student’s plan is individualized and outlines a pathway to meet rigorous requirements to prepare the student for high school. The plan is updated each year by the student during a meeting with the school counselor. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate. For more information about the academic planning process and Aspire2Excellence visit apsva.us/academicplanning.

NEW STUDENTS If your child speaks a language other than English as his/her first language, or has been attending an educational system abroad, register your child by contacting the Language Services Registration Center (LSRC) at 703-228-7663. In all other cases, register at your neighborhood middle school, or at the school where your child has been admitted.

DOCUMENTATION NEEDED TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD • Proof of the child’s age and legal name – a certified copy

of the birth certificate (If the parent/guardian cannot provide a certified copy of the birth certificate, an Affidavit must be completed. APS has the right to forward a copy of the Affidavit to its law enforcement agency).

• Proof that the parent or legal guardian of the student lives in Arlington County – current lease or mortgage agreement

• Official school records from another school system or country, if applicable and available

• The Request for Entrance Information form must be completed and submitted to the student’s school. This form is available at any Arlington school or at apsva.us/registration.

• Medical information that includes immunization records and documentation of a tuberculosis screening done within the 12 months prior to entry (See Health Requirements)

For additional information and all forms needed for registration, go to the “Registration” section of the APS website, www.apsva.us.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS • The student’s medical information (immunizations and

physical exam, if available) must be submitted to the school. A physical examination within the 12 months prior to school entry is recommended, but not required unless the student is participating in middle school sports. The immunization record is required and should list the month, day and year of each immunization.

• Documentation of tuberculosis (TB) screening done within the 12 months prior to school entry is required, except when transferring from another Virginia public school system where TB screening was previously completed. TB screening and/or testing must be completed in the United States or at a U.S. installation and be verified and signed by a licensed medical professional (physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse or physician’s assistant). The screening must include a review of symptoms, a risk assessment, and if indicated, the results of either a TB skin test or a TB blood test (commonly referred to as an “IGRA”).

REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS Every student entering grade six through grade 12 is required by the state of Virginia to receive a booster dose of Tdap (teta-nus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine.

Three doses of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine are required for girls ages 11-12 with one dose prior to sixth grade entry. For HPV, parents may “opt out” of the HPV requirement by simply not getting the vaccine. No letter or certification of “opt out” status is required.

For a detailed list of the minimum immunization requirements for entry into school, go to www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/requirements.

RECOMMENDED IMMUNIZATIONS Talk with your health care provider or public health nurse about recommended vaccines for preteens and adolescents. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) strongly recommends a meningococcal (meningitis) vaccination for all adolescents between the ages of 11 and 13 and influenza vaccine. Three doses of the HPV vaccine are also recommended for males 11-12 years of age. More information can be found at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/easy-to-read/preteen-teen.html.

Questions about health entry requirements or immunizations can also be answered by the nurse at each Arlington school or by the School Health Office at703-228-1651.

PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS To participate in sports during the fall of the school year, the student is required to have a valid physical examination form completed and dated on or after May 1. Forms are available at the middle schools or at www.vhsl.org/forms/. Completed forms should be turned in to the Activities Director at your child’s school.

Check-In Program Enrollment Information

WHAT IS CHECK-IN?Check-In is a daily after-school program which provides

supervised, asset-building activities for enrolled sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students. This program operates on all regularly-scheduled school days at all five middle schools from school dismissal to 6 p.m. Should schools close earlier than the regularly-scheduled time, Check-In will close at 4 p.m.

Check-In provides students a positive environment in which to study, relax or participate in a variety of activities. The students can also participate in any of the school’s regularly-scheduled after-school activities, such as intramural programs and clubs. However, Check-In requires that all students sign out with the program supervisor before going to a school activity and sign in when they return.

The monthly fees are on a sliding scale, based on household income.
