WHAT iS PlATFoRm TENNiS?Platform tennis is an American racquet sport played by

thousands of people of all ages. It is the only racquet sport that players can enjoy outdoors in cold weather. This unique appeal attracts people who desire fresh air, competition, and social engagement – all on a chilly winter’s day or night.

Platform tennis is particularly appealing thanks to the ability to play a hard shot off the screens. This means that men cannot easily overpower women. In fact, a hard shot into the back screen can result in the receiver hitting the ball right back at the originating driver from an even shorter distance. In addition to being able to play at night, the sport has a long season, typically September through April.

A BRiEF HiSToRy oF “PADDlE”In 1928 in Scarsdale, New York, James Cogswell and Fessenden Blanchard were searching for a winter racquet sport close to home. The two constructed a wooden platform, about one half the size of a tennis court, and went on the hunt for appropriate equipment. Cogswell solved the problem when he found a set of paddles and balls, used for paddle tennis, at a local sporting goods store. The wooden paddles and spongy balls were perfect, but the two got tired of pulling balls out of snow banks, so they surrounded the court with chicken wire fencing attached to a wooden frame.

Legend has it that during a particularly heated match, a hard-hit ball lodged in the wire mesh. Both an innovator and a natural competitor, Blanchard ran behind the fencing, smacked the ball as hard as he could and called

the shot “good.” After some debate, the men agreed that the new off-the-wall rule was a good one, adding dimension to the game and broadening the skill set necessary for the sport. And so, platform tennis was born.

HoW Do yoU PlAy? The rules of platform tennis are identical to tennis with a few exceptions, the first of which makes the game unique. Did your opponent hit an incredible shot that went right past you? No problem. Get to the back of the court and play the ball after it hits the screen. This added feature keeps the point going longer and adds a dimension to the game that is missing in tennis.

Other exceptions are on the serve where there are two main differences: 1) You are allowed only one serve and 2) serves that touch the net and land in the service box (known as “let” serves in tennis) are played. Just try to practice that.

The tri-state area is home to one of the largest contingents of platform fans and players, meaning the competition will be fierce and will delight the fans. With over 60 locations to play in the Garden State, the sport has clearly taken hold with players of all ages and skill levels. And while some may look at the ever-changing weather conditions of New Jersey to be a hindrance, the truly dedicated know that paddle players live for that chilly nighttime game under the lights with the snow falling. On the paddle court chilly weather days are never a bad thing.

WHy iNDiAN TRAil ClUB? Home to one of the top-rated platform tennis facilities around; and complemented by extremely knowledgeable and championship-winning staff, the Indian Trail Club (ITC) is at the top of its game. Centrally located in Franklin Lakes in Bergen County, New Jersey, the Indian Trail Club offers a short commute from New York City and outlying paddle regions like Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY. Boasting a nearly unprecedented number of courts (8), and hospitality facilities including two award-winning restaurants, the Indian Trail Club is the perfect host for the first-ever American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) National Championships in Northern New Jersey. With record attendance expected, ITC’s 8 courts ensure that multiple matches can be played simultaneously and efficiently, offering the ability to welcome more competitors and even more spectators. Working closely together the APTA and the Indian Trail Club will present a National Championship unlike any in the past.
