• Aquaculture and Fisheries Business Development Advisors under the Structure of Ulnooweg (A First Nation Based Business Services and Support Agency Serving First Nation Communities in Atlantic Canada and Quebec)

• Supported through DFO’s Atlantic and Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (AICFI & NICFI) and Co-Managed by the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs (APC)

• Through the Atlantic and Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (AICFI & NICFI) , Ulnooweg Development Group works in partnership with the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs to assist communities and entrepreneurs who are interested in developing aquaculture businesses in the Atlantic region

• Two Aquaculture Business Development Advisors work with the Ulnooweg Business Development Team (BDT) to provide technical and professional advisory services, project management and aftercare support.

• Our goal is to transform ideas and interest in the aquaculture industry into viable business plans and help bring those plans to fruition.

Aquaculture Focus for First Nation Communities…

• Aquaculture Awareness – help bring awareness of the opportunities that exist in Aquaculture

• Access to Marine/Land based Sites – assist with applications and help guide through regulatory process

• Business Plan Development – assist with develop business plan development

• Technical Support – use the knowledge and experience of Aquaculture BDT to assist in project planning and development

• Access to Capital– help acquire capital through establishing relationships with funding partners

• Business Plan Implementation – assist with transitioning the business plan into reality

• Training and Human Resource Development – help to access training support that is tailored to community needs

• Aftercare Support – providing ongoing advisory support to help ensure project success

• Building Connections and Partnerships – with FN communities to the regional, national and international aquaculture community

First Nations Aquaculture In Canada

• Nationally, aquaculture production is estimated to grow at a pace of approximately 5% per annum over the next five years and 10% per annum over the following five years (Senate, 2015).

• In contrast, First Nations aquaculture production is projected to grow at 16% per year over the next decade (Gardner Pinfold, 2015).

• Since 2010, the BDT has provided direct assistance to over 20 communities.

• Of these communities, 10 have established aquaculture enterprises with an estimated economic output of $30 million once they reach maturity.

• These new enterprises which include finfish, shellfish, seaweed and aquaculture and related marine services have created over 100 jobs with expected to create a further 60 jobs in the near future.
