Medtronic’s advanced energy products deliver proprietary Transcollation® technology for hemostatic sealing of softtissue and bone. Our Aquamantys® System is used across a wide range of surgical procedures, including orthopaedicreconstruction, spine surgery, orthopaedic trauma, and surgical oncology. More than 650,000 patients have beentreated with Transcollation technology since 1999, and our products are used in:

• 15 of the top 17 hospitals in the US News & World Report 2011-2012 Honor Roll of “America’s Best Hospitals” 1

• 8 of the top 10 US cancer hospitals1

The Aquamantys System combines radiofrequency (RF) energy and saline to reduce blood loss during and after surgical procedures. This patented Transcollation technology has been shown to reduce transfusion rates and may also reduce the need for other blood management products.2

Aquamantys® Systemand Transcollation® Technology

The Aquamantys System delivers patented Transcollation technology to quickly stop bleeding and reduce blood loss during

and after surgery.1-4 Transcollation technology is a combination of radiofrequency (RF) energy and saline that provides

hemostatic sealing of soft tissue and bone. It has been clinically shown to lower transfusion rates and may reduce the need

for other blood management products during and after surgery.5

• Reduces transfusion rates during and after liver resections5

• May reduce the need for other blood management products during or after the procedure5

Step 3Vessels <1 mm may be occluded, reducing bleeding

Step 1 RF energy and saline is applied to tissue

Step 2 Heat-induced shrinkage occurs

Transcollation technology integrates RF energy and

saline to deliver controlled thermal energy to tissue. The

coupling of saline and RF energy allows the device

temperature to stay at approximately 100°C – nearly

200°C less than conventional devices. This produces a

tissue effect without the associated charring found in

other methods.

Aquamantys® System’sClinical Value in Surgical Oncology Procedures

The Aquamantys System uses Transcollation® technology, which provides broad tissue-surface hemostasis in a rapid and controlled manner. Transcollation technology has been clinically proven to reduce transfusion rates during and after surgery.1 MedPAR data has shown that reduced transfusion rates contribute to lower costs for hospitals2 and reduced length of stay for patients.3

CliniCal Benefits

- Reduces blood transfusions during and after liver resections1

- Reduces need for renal clamping in partial nephrectomies4

- May reduce post-operative pancreatic leaks following distal pancreatectomy5,6

- May reduce the need for other blood management products before or after the procedure1

- Reduces transfusion rates,1 which in turn may lower costs to the hospital2,7

Aquamantys® System’sEconomic Value: Lowering Costs by Simplifying Hemostasis

Transcollation® technology achieves hemostasis during liver surgery, resulting in reduced transfusion rates.1 Using Transcollation technology during surgical oncology procedures may also reduce the need for other blood management products such as topical hemostats and energy-based devices.1 Blood transfusions add costs to surgical procedures through both the direct cost of blood products and the associated increase in average length of stay (LOS) as shown in the tables below.

Aquamantys® System’s Impact on Transfusion Rates and Blood LossTransfusions are known to be one of the factors to increase the likelihood of post-surgical complications3 and frequently contribute to increased length of stay.2,5 Transcollation® technology has been clinically shown to reduce blood transfusion rates during and after liver resections.1

Economic Impact of Aquamantys System on Procedure Costs

By reducing transfusion rates, the Aquamantys® System may reduce or eliminate other methods of blood management such as energy-based devices and topical hemostats.1

In a study of 22 open partial nephrectomies with hilar occlusion, data showed a 30-35% (p=0.07) reduction in blood loss in the 11 cases treated with Transcollation technology.

In a study of 170 patients at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Geller et al. reduced transfusion rates for liver resections to 3.5% when using Transcollation® technology compared to published averages of 15-33% for large institutions.

In a pre-clinical study, three Mayo Clinic surgeons reduced post-op pancreatic leaks to 5.5% in the group treated with Transcollation technology compared to 42% in the control group.
