OHIO UNIVERSITY CAMPUS RECREATIONAQUATIC CENTER: LEARN TO SWIM COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Parent/Toddler: Recommended age: 6 months to 3 years old Class is designed for the parent and child to be in the water together, covering basic skills that parent can work with their child. No previous swimming experience is neces-sary.

Preschool 1: Recommended age: 3 to 5 years old Class is designed for the beginner swimmer. No previous swimming experience is necessary. At the completion of the class, participants should be ready for Preschool 2 class.

Preschool 2: Recommended age: 3 to 5 years old Class is designed for the beginner swimmer with some experience. Participants entering this level should be able to do the following:

1. Enter & Exit the water unassisted(Sit and Slide in Method)2. Float on their back for 10 seconds3. Float on their Stomach for 10 seconds4. Put their face in the water

Preschool 3: Recommended age: 3 to 6 years old Class is designed for the preschooler that has completed Preschool 1 & 2. Participants entering this level should be able to complete Preschool 2 skills in addition to the following:

1. Front & Back Glide2. Roll from Front to Back3. Roll from Back to Front4. Flutter Kick on Stomach5. Flutter kick on back6. Bob 5 times in a row7. Tread water for 10 secondsNOTE: With completion of this level, participants may register for level 2

Level 1: Recommended age: 4 to 7 years old or demonstration of previous skill level Class is designed for the beginner swimmer with some experience. Participants entering this level should be able to do the following:

1. Enter & Exit the water unassisteda. (Sit and slip in method)2. Float on their back for 10 seconds3. Float on their stomach for 10 seconds4. Put their face in the water5. Changing directions in the water6. Treading water7. Alternating arm action

Level 2: Recommended age: Minimum of 5 years old or demonstration of previous skill level Class is designed for be-ginning swimmers with some experience and have completed Level 1 or Preschool 3 courses. Participants entering this level should be able to complete the following:

1. Blowing bubble with rhythmic breathing2. Swim on their front at least 2 body lengths3. Alternating Arm action on Front & Back4. Bobbing at least 3 times in a row5. Open eyes underwater6. Glide for 2 body lengths on stomach

Level 3: Recommended age: Minimum of 5 years old or demonstration of previous skill level Class is designed for ba-sic level swimmers ready to learn stroke development. Participants entering this level should have passed Level 2 skills and should be able to demonstrate the following:

1. Combined leg and are action for 15 feet2. Jumping in from the side unassisted3. Front and Back glide for 3 body lengths4. Treading water for 20 seconds5. Glide from wall, change directions & return to wall unassisted6. Jump into deep water

Level 4: Recommended age: Minimum of 5 years old or demonstration of previous skill level Class is designed for intermediate swimmers that have completed skills for Level 3. Participants entering this level should also be able to demonstrate the following:

1. Kneeling Dive2. Treading water for 40 seconds3. Back float for 30 seconds4. Change direction & body position in deep water5. Swim crawl stroke 15 yards6. Swim back crawl stroke 15 yards7. Elementary backstroke 10 yards8. Sidestroke for 10 yards

Level 5: Recommended age: Minimum of 5 years old or demonstration of previous skill level Class is designed for the intermediate swimmer that has completed the skills for level 4. Participants should also be able to demonstrate the following skills:

1. Head first dive2. Swim underwater 4 body lengths3. Front & Back crawl open turn4. Treading water 2 min5. Breaststroke for 15 yards6. Front crawl for 25 yards7. Streamline position front & back

Junior Bobcats: This class is designed for those that have completed a minimum of level 3 and are interested in moving toward the Bobcat Swim Club Youth Program. Classes are generally longer than the normal swimming lesson and are offered for one (1) additional week. The focus in this program is the development of the swimmer toward the competitive Bobcat Swim Club Youth program.
