Spontaneous travelers, called as “Flashpackers”.

What makes a trip memorable and prolongs the happiness is the unforeseen joy derived from spontaneity. And “Spontaneous travel” of the millenials is a travel trend that

maximizes such characteristic.

Our target

Page 6: AR Experience for Travelers€¦ · 1) As spontaneity increases, there naturally follows an increased expenditure 2) Traveling with smartphones: 98% of flashpackers travel with their

Who are flashpackers?

“They start the trip without a specific plan. Recently the millenials(late 10s ~ early 30s) are the main travel consumers, and with them, the spontaneous travel became the rising trend in the travel industry.”

1) Purchase plane ticket without any planning. Rather buy the ticket when they feel like it or when spotting promotions.

2) They think of themselves as adventurous travelers3) They are mostly solo travelers.

(According to the analysis of decision of travel and purchase process of flights)

Our target

“Make AR glasses based on travel navigation service with ‘entertaining’ and ‘effortless’ process for the flashpackers,

aiming to maximize their unexpected fun of traveling ”

At first, asian countries like Japan or Hong Kong where Korean travelers visit a lot because of less financial and temporal burden

are going to be targets of beta service.

2) Traveling with smartphones:

98% of flashpackers travel with their smartphone, more than 90% of them prefer to do so. Their perceived safety and freedom in traveling increases with the device, since they can contact with others and can search for travel information in real-time in making instant choices. However, at the same time, more than 50% recognize the overuse of smartphone during traveling as problematic at the same time.

Using AR glass, Vuzix can ease the overuse problem and at the same time, still maintain the perceived safety and freedom coming from smartphones.

Problems of flashpackers’ travel pattern

Existing travel apps and services are not suitable for the flashpackers

The main types of the existing travel apps are: reservation, navigation, review, onsite tour guide and social. Among these, navigation, review, and social services are related to

spontaneity of the travel.

(* Onsite tour guide application (ex.museum and tourist attraction ar) is used after deciding the destination and at the destination, thus it is not related to spontaneity.)

Problems of existing travel apps

Page 12: AR Experience for Travelers€¦ · 1) As spontaneity increases, there naturally follows an increased expenditure 2) Traveling with smartphones: 98% of flashpackers travel with their

1. Difficult information recognition for travelers without local knowledge or without a travel plan: Due to the overflowing information, it is hard to spot and select the information needed, or to make a choice

1. Boring and inconvenient UI design: The current service UI, especially in navigation is flat and there are little services that utilizes AR’s attractive features. Even those that utilize the attractive features of AR are all focused on onsite tour guide service, rather than navigation, review, and social. (e.g. museum AR explanation applications)

1. Overly generalized review information, heavily focusing on the popular attraction sites.: Inconsiderate of each individual’s different needs and taste

Problems of existing travel apps

Page 13: AR Experience for Travelers€¦ · 1) As spontaneity increases, there naturally follows an increased expenditure 2) Traveling with smartphones: 98% of flashpackers travel with their

4. Trust issues in case of social services that connects the travelers.

4. No application that provides navigation, review and social functions at the same time, and in an entertaining way that matches with the mood of the excited travelers.

Problems of existing travel apps

Viewranger-skyline : Using AR, labels more than 9 million landscape features, and also shows you where to walk with real-time directional arrows.

Google trips: Non-AR, major travel application that provides 1) the reviews on the main attraction sites and and 2) travel routes made by other travelers.

Sidekix: Urban Navigation nominated for one of “2017 best travel apps” by the Guardians. Non-AR,pop-up recommendation service according to users’ current location. Automatically tracks the travel route. Map interface with vivid color and icon use.

Roadtrippers: One of the highest ranked traveling app in Apple store. Non-AR, make visit recommends along the one’s pre-set travel route. Social functions of connecting travelers for accompany. Boring, typical map interface.

Tinder: Dating application that was not designed for traveling. Howerve, people use it a lot for meeting people while traveling.

Choice making

Through selection of the level of spontaneity of the application’s navigation service, the users can customize the choice making process; the higher the spontaneity level, the higher the randomness of navigation and less the information provided

e.g.Level 1. Rating stickersLevel 2. Animated pop-up destination recommendation, filtered according to one’s travel interest settingLevel 3. Unfiltered, totally unexpected pop-up recommendation. Competition of attaining spontaneity score. Mini games that make choice making more fun and spontaneous

e.g. - rolling dice- “If the next person you meet is a girl follow the cat character, if it is a boy follow the dog character.”

Interface

Make information less burdensome, and entertaining through 1) differentiation on the data display amount according to the level of spontaneity and 2) effective visual & Auditory feedback

e.g.Pop-up recommendation and rating stickers - animation, vividRoad navigation - simple, mono-tone Music and ASMR accordingly to the mood of the goal of the trip, current location, the time setting, the surroundings and the culture there, and the weather

Connecting travelers through avatars

: By showing the avatars of travelers who are heading to the same place or near each other at the moment, sharing the similar travel goal, travelers can communicate firstly through the avatars and then decide whether to accompany or not.

1. Avatar: Customized character that represents you and your trip goal.2. Voice message(call), emoticon based communication3. Trust issue - censorship:

a. Identity verification by passportb. Report system: report system: users who got reported for inappropriate behaviors will have restriction

on the social service use

2. Social: Connecting People

Automatic tracking and records

: the user’s travel route so they can record their experience with ease, effortlessly, since flashpackers are likely to have no documented itinerary.

1. Memories and experiencea. Travel route (automatically tracked)b. Capture the moment: pictures and video (selectively recorded)

i. automatically placed at each travel point inside the travel route.2. Expenditure alarm

• Personality: Introvert, Quiet, Clam • Goal: Healing, Spontaneous adventure alone • Use context: She bought her flight ticket quite early in a cheap price, but she

usually doesn’t plan her trip since she enjoys spontaneous and adventurous trips, releasing her stress. Also, as she doesn’t want to visit places where travelers usually go such as places that can be easily searched through ‘NAVER’. Rather than meeting new people during travel, she would like to reflect herself and enjoy being alone. In her daily lives she loves to throw back the memories from the travel by seeing the photos and videos while traveling. She just leaves for a travel, only bringing necessities.

• Use cases: She usually uses navigation function, and doesn’t use social function. She likes to track her trip route automatically recorded while capturing some moments to look back later.
