The Sun- day radio patiently announced all the churches by name that were cancelled. After a few times of that, I think I would be tempted to say prayers at home, work this weekend and be safe; nobody will be open. The wind plastered windows and doors with snow so you were nearly in your own world. The very good thing was electricity stayed on, and so heat and light were both plentiful. After the wind died down, people helped each other to dig out and check on each other. Breda is working on our electricity lines. A crew comes in to get new poles up by Snappy Popcorn, and electrical work will be done in the circle north of town. Other areas get a little updating, too. We have come a long way from a single light bulb of our forefathers. Mt. Carmel is working hard on their centennial and everything is going as scheduled. Now you can delightful pot- tery with an old-fashioned look -- a pic- ture of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church and the Mt. Carmel imprint on it. These cold days are a good time to talk to each other about floats for their parade. When spring comes, we will be busy at other things. This week we have March 1. Is it coming in weather-wise like a lion or lamb? Photo by Colleen Rossiter. “We thought we were a good team and wanted to win the conference. We didn’t quite make that goal, but we had a good chance late in the season. Unfortunately, we lost a couple games by last-second shots which dropped us to 4th place. Game by game, we played better with an occasional hiccup or two. We learned how to play together better as the year went on. We ended the season at 15-8, and each girl improved their individual skill level. Overall, the girls had a very successful year. “We continued working hard on individual skills this year, and that will continue. We have big holes to fill with our graduating seniors. So, next year we need to step up our game on individual shooting and defense. We will have multiple returning girls who had significant starting roles and significant playing time. We expect growth from each of them as well as our younger players. We will re-dedicate ourselves to an off-season of improving our skills. She is the daughter of Chris and Sheri Allman. As part of the premier ALA program, Allman will study local, county and state government processes during this 6 day nonparti- san political learning experience. Allman, a rising junior at Kuemper Catho- lic High School, was se- lected to attend ALA Iowa Girls State by Breda Unit #607 based on qualities of leadership, scholar- ship, citizenship and character. She also partici- pates in many activities in her school and com- munity, including Girl Scouts, band, choir, foot- ball and basketball cheer leading, and the musi- cal, as well as volunteering for many commu- nity events, such as the MoveIt Relay for Life and the annual Easter Egg Hunt. ALA Girls State attendees known as citi- zens, receive special instruction in parliamen- tary procedure and organize themselves into two mock political parties. The young women then campaign, hold rallies, debate and ultimately vote to elect city, county, and state officials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties. At- tendees not elected to office are given appointments and visit the offices of those elected to share their viewpoints as citizens. ALA Iowa Girls State will take place June 16-21, 2019, at Drake University. Every spring, approximately 25,000 young women across the country are se- lected to attend ALA Girls State programs in their respective states. Two outstand- ing citizens from each of the 50 ALA Girl State programs are then chosen to repre- sent their state as senators at ALA Girls Nation held in Washington, D.C. in July. About the American Legion Auxiliary: Members of the ALA have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, mili- tary, and their families both here and abroad. They volunteer millions of hours yearly, with a value of $2 billion each year. As part of the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization, ALA volunteers across the country also step up to honor vet- erans and military through annual scholarships and with ALA Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism. Strawberry shortcake and cof- fee were served by Christy Agan and Nancy Lemker before the meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Marsha Stork. Nancy Lemker offered prayer in the absence of the Chaplain. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence in re- membrance of the dead was observed. The Preamble to the Constitution was recited. Roll Call was answered by the President and Vice President. The minutes of the previous meeting and Treasurer’s report were dispensed with due to the absence of the Secretary and Treasurer. Committee reports: Community Ser- vice - There will be a bloodmobile on Monday, February 25th from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Bars and cookies are needed. Girls State - Our selected Girl Stater has com- pleted all registration forms with the department office. VA & R – 4,712 cou- pons valued at $9,323 were sent to Ger- many. Poppies – a date for distributing the poppies was discussed. Junior Ac- tivities – the District Jr. Conference will be held in Palmer, IA on Sunday, March 10 th . Junior Camp will be June 2 nd thru the 7 th at Newton, IA. The deadline for camp application is April 1 st . Member- ship - is currently at 92 paid. Our goal is 102. Communications: Thank you cards were read from Mae Knobbe and Carroll and Kuemper High Schools. The Unit Data Form & an application for a De- partment Committee for next year were received from the Department office and will be completed. Old Business: A Thank you card was sent to HyVee for serving breakfast to veterans on Veteran’s Day. New Business: A motion was made by Ione Koster to purchase 6 grave mark- ers. The motion carried. A ‘Thinking of You’ card for Janis Berger was passed around for members to sign. Birthdays: January – Wilma Boes, Angie Brinker, Florence Bruening, Ione Koster, Joanell Koster, Mary Lou Herm- sen, Renee Mueggenberg, Theresa Mueggenberg, Nancy Pudenz and Patty Wernimont. They encourage anyone inter- ested in participating in Senior League this year to meet at the club- house at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, to see how many new players and teams the league will have. Those who cannot make the meeting will hopefully have a part- ner who can be there so that the roster can be set up before regular play starts on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Weather permitting, following the meeting on April 17, partici- pants will play their fun opener.
