This class is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Arabic, spoken or written. It teaches Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is the kind of Arabic used currently in modern books, the news and newspapers, and formal speech through the Arab world. Modern Standard Arabic and Classical Arabic (the language of the Koran, classical Islamic texts, and older religious, literary and historical texts) are very similar, and this class will help you continue studying either or both.

Colloquial Arabic, which is usually not written, is another variety of Arabic that is used in every day speech. It differs greatly from region to region. In this class, we will not focus on dialects, although the DVDs that accompany the textbook contain material in Egyptian colloquial Arabic (in green) and Levantine (in Mauve). The kind of formal Arabic (MSA) taught in this class is understood throughout the Arab world, and knowing it will make learning a dialect easier later. Course Pre-requisites: None Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, a successful learner should in shaa’a-llaah be able to: 1. have mastered the Arabic alphabet and sound system, be able to distinguish and

pronounce all Arabic sounds, and write accurately from dictation;

2. be able to initiate social interactions, ask for basic information, and be familiar with basic aspects of Arabic culture.

3. be able to talk briefly about yourself, your education, and your family with any native speaker;

4. comprehend simple written texts in familiar topics; 5. comprehend audio/ video texts on familiar topics; 6. be able to compose simple paragraph about yourself; and 7. recognize some of the differences between formal and spoken Arabic. Welcome:

Dear students,

Welcome everyone! My name is Rayed Khedher, though I really prefer that you call me Raed (The Arabic way of saying my name!). I am so happy that you decided to sign up for this Arabic online class that is being offered for the first time here at UCLA Extension! As your "virtual" instructor through this course, I will teach you MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) االلغة االعربيیة االفصحى which is the standardized and literary variety of Arabic used in writing and in most formal speech. We will also have the opportunity to study 2 colloquial Arabic varieties (Egyptian and Levantine) which are the two most understood registers in the Arab world. This class will offer you the opportunity to acquire and master skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Arabic. The materials used are broad-based and will help you develop excellent communication skills necessary for speaking Arabic in both formal and informal situations. The course will be supplemented with various activities that can help you explore the richness and diversity of the Arab culture and history.

Please go to the "Syllabus" area and read the entire syllabus. You will see that all course materials are organized by week behind the Weekly Materials button. Once you have done that, please go to the "Discussion Board" and find my first message from me to you. Reply to it and post a brief bio in which you introduce yourself to the entire class. In case you experience any technical issues, please feel free to contact Technical Support. You can also contact me through my email in the "Staff Info".

I cannot wait to begin this wonderful experience with all of you!

Instructor Bio: My name is Rayed Khedher. I hold an MA in Applied Anthropology. I am currently a fifth year PhD candidate in sociocultural anthropology at UCLA. My areas of interest, research and teaching include, but are not limited to, Arabic language and culture, transnational migration, human rights, North African diaspora, politics and the art of resistance, media, and Islam. My primary training on those issues date back to my NGO career that I started in the mid-1990s in Tunisia with NGOs such as Enda-Inter Arabe, Greenpeace, El Taller International. I am currently a board member in SWAA (Southwestern Anthropological Association), a regional association of academic and applied anthropologists in the southwestern states of the US. he is also the Co-Editor-in-Chief of UFAHAMU, a UCLA Interdisciplinary Peer-Reviewed Journal of African Studies. I have taught many introductory classes in anthropology and have also been teaching three levels of Arabic at UCLA for the last two years. I am from Tunisia, the country that ignited the Arab Spring. My mother tongue is Arabic, but I also speak French, English, Italian, and German.

Instructor Expectations:

• I expect students to be familiar with the technology and platforms used in this online class.

• I expect students to carefully read the syllabus before the first day of class and follow all the included instructions.

• I expect students to commit to spending the study time needed to master course content

• I expect you to submit assignments on time and according to given instructions. • I expect you to let me know if you are having problems understanding or working

with the material. I also expect you to make use of office hours whenever you can.

• I expect you to treat your classmates and with courtesy and respect.

Posting Responses: Students are encouraged to post their responses for exercises, assignments and discussions on the due dates each week. Your postings should incorporate responses to your peers, your opinions, pertinent information from things that you’ve read, and examples from your experience. Your posts should be substantive and feature good writing, correct spelling and mechanics. In our learning model, the heart of active learning occurs through the discussions that help you test your ideas, reinforce what you have learned, and share resources with others in the class. Successful students check the course room and interact with others as required by assignments, which usually means checking-in and responding four to five days each week.

Responses to your Postings: I will be in the classroom at least five days a week, sometimes every day. I will respond to questions within 24 hours. All work will be graded within seven days of the original due date. Put my name in postings to me (Rayed). Do the same for responses to everyone else. No messages are private - so please expand on any topic. Confused?

If, after reading an assignment, you do not understand what to do, please start by asking questions in the Questions about the Course Discussion Board Forum. If you are confused, it is likely that other students are also confused. This not only allows me to clarify the issue for everyone, but it also allows other students to answer the question if they happen to be in the course before I am. This is much better than turning in an assignment that is not done correctly and losing points. For technical problems, please contact technical support. For personal issues, feel free to contact me my email or for complex issues by phone. Required Course Resources: The books:

1. Alif Baa, An Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, Third Edition (with DVDs), Brustad, Al – Batal, & Al – Tonsi.

2. Al-Kittab fii Ta’allum al Arabiyya, Part I, Third Edition (with DVDs), Brustad, Al – Batal, & Al – Tonsi. We will use this book after we finish Alif Baa, beginning in late October.

These books are available at the UCLA bookstore. If UCLA runs out, check local bookstores (e.g., Borders on Westwood Blvd.) or order from Amazon.com (overnight delivery) or Georgetown University Press (URL http://press.georgetown.edu/arabic.html). The website: In this website, you will find all of the interactive exercises along with audio and video files for the third editions of Alif Baa - and now Al-Kitaab Part One! Students need to purchase access with a credit card at www.alkitabtextbook.com DVDs: The audio-visual materials on the DVDs are an integral and required part of the course. Listen as much as possible. Because time is limited, not all the materials on the DVDs will be assigned, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t look at them. Nothing will improve your proficiency in Arabic more than frequent exposure to the language.

Course Grading: Grades will be determined by the quality and completeness of the work submitted and the grades earned on homework assignments, quizzes, dictations, presentation, and exams.

A. Tests There will be three quizzes and a final exam. Students will have up to one hour to finish the quizzes and three hours to complete the final exam. Final Exam Incentive: To reward improvement, your grade on the final examination will replace any lower grade on a quiz. For example, if you get 85% on the final, all quiz grades lower than 85 will be replaced by 85, and your final grade will be recalculated. Please note that this will not affect your homework grades. B. Homework You will be assigned a written homework for most classes. Assignments are due the following class session. Late homework can be checked but won’t be counted. Students get two chances to turn in late homework without penalty. Keep a file of all homework for reference and review. You are encouraged to discuss particular questions with the instructor. Please follow the guidelines below: 1. Write the homework in separate papers. Mark each page with your name, section, homework number, and the page and exercise number. 2. Copy the sentence you are being drilled on, or enough of it so that we can figure out what it is you are supposed to be doing (and so that you can figure it out later when you review). For fill-in drills you may photocopy the page, scan it and submit it. 3. Write legibly. In Arabic, this usually requires leaving a blank line between any two lines of writing.

4. Skip lines, so that the instructor can write legible corrections and comments. 5. You may work together on assignments. You may not, however, copy someone else’s work. Copying is a violation of the UCLA plagiarism policy, and can result in a grade of F for the entire course.

6. Follow up on any instructor’s comment on your homework. 7. Not following any of the homework guidelines may cause point deduction. C. Dictation

Page 6: Arabic XL 1A syllabus FALL 2014 - UCLA Extension · PDF fileARABIC XL 1A Fall 2014 ﻼﺳ$ ﻼ& ... Required Course Resources: The books: 1. Alif Baa, ... There will be three quizzes

There will be 3 dictations. I will dictate 10 words or phrases and ask you to provide the translation in English. The maximum points you can get per dictation is 10. D. Presentation There will be an oral presentation in the last week of the course. You can either speak to the class in Arabic for 3 minutes on a topic of your choice, or create a dialogue with one or two of your classmates to present it in class. Guidelines will be given before the presentation Grading Scale: Course grades will be based on the following: % # Points Assignment/Exam Letter Grade Equivalent: A 93-100% B- 82-80 D+ 69-67 A- 92-90 C+ 79-77 D 66-63 B+ 89-87 C 76-73 D- 62-60 B 86-83 C- 72-70 F 59-0 All grades are final when filed by the instructor on the Final Grade Report.

The final grade will be calculated as follows:

3 quizzes 20% Final Exam 20 % Homework assignments 20% Preparation and participation 10 % 4 Dictations 15% Presentation 15%

Policies About Deadlines and Late Work: Life happens, and I understand that work and family emergencies occur. If your work is posted late but during the week that it is due, you’ll receive full points. If the work from one week is posted late during the next week, you’ll lose ten percent for each day that it is late. I generally do not accept work that is more than a week late. If you contact me before the assignment is late, we can try to work out something for your schedule. However, there are no extensions for the class. All work must be turned in by the last day of class. Academic Honesty Policy (sample) Academic dishonesty covers behavior in cheating, plagiarism, and fabrication of information. These behaviors are not tolerated. Citations and references should be provided following a formatting standard such as APA 6th Edition. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the UCLA Student Conduct Code and the official statements regarding cheating and plagiarism. These and other relevant documents are available on the Dean of Students Office website: http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/dos/students/integrity/
