ARALAR Description and situation Karst mountain massif, the easternmost of the dividing line between Cantabrian and Mediterranean waters, located at Gipuzkoa's south-eastern end, on the border with Navarre Surface area 10,962 ha Protection status ZEC NATURA 2000 (ES2120011) Other regional or national protections Natural Park since 1994 Main uses Ancestral presence of agriculture (farmhouses), livestock and forestry. High recreational use. Ownership 57.5% public (Mountain of Public Use) Habitats targeted by LIFE (4030) Dry European heath, (4090) oro- Mediterranean heath, (6170) calcareous alpine and sub-alpine meadows, (6210) dry semi-natural meadows, (6230) plant formations with Nardus, (7140) transition mires, (7210) calcareous marshes with Cladium mariscus and with caricion davallana species. These species occupy 27% of the ZEC's surface area.

TheAralarMountainRangeislocatedinGipuzkoa'ssouth-easternborder,extendinginto

Navarre,aswell.Thispredominantlycalcareousmassifbearsintensekarstmanifestations:

thereare850caves,with70kilometresofmacro-cavernsorgalleriesaccessible,mostofwhich

havenotevenbeenexplored.

Thenaturalforestscoveroverathirdofthespace,withlargeextensionsofbeech,andtoa

lesserextent,oak,holmoakandgalloak.Thisforestpanoramaiscompletedwithseveral

coniferplantations.

Theseforestmasseshostfaunacommunities,withcarnivoremammalspresent(marten,wild

cat,polecat,badger,etc.),birdsofprey(white-tailedkites,honeybuzzards,short-toedeagles,

long-earedowls,etc.),woodpeckers,batsandsomeinvertebratesofinterest,suchasthestag

beetle,CerambyxcerdoandRosaliaalpina.Thesnowvole,beardedvultureandalpinenewtarealsoofnote.

Oneofthemaincharacteristicsofthisspaceistheancestralpresenceoftraditionalterritory

uses,suchasagricultureinthefarmhouseenvironment,livestockandforestry.Thepasture

landsusedforlivestockdominatethehighplateaulandscape,occupyingapproximatelyone

thirdofthesurfacearea.80%ofthelivestock,fundamentallylatxasheep,areinpublicuse

zones,wherethepasturesareconjointlyused,andinrecentyears,thepractiseofmaking

cheeseinhutsespeciallydesignedtothisendhasbeenrecovered.

AcalcareousmarshwithCladiummariscuswasalsodetected,impoverishedbythe

proliferationofgrassandligneousspecies,andacidophilemarsheswithcompactingproblems

duetolivestocktrampling.OneoftheactionsincludedinthisLIFEprojectis,indeed,tocontrol

theimpactofthelivestockactivityonthesetohygro-peathabitats.
