The first place I chose that is east of South America. It is where the North American and South American Plates meet. I believe that this area is overdue

for an earthquake because it is on a fault line, and secondly because the fault line boundaries near it are riddled with earthquakes.

Page 3: Arc explorer results

The second that I believe is overdue for an earthquakeis south of Japan. I think this area is overdue because it is on a tectonic plate boundarythat is covered by earthquakes, however this small are hasn’t experienced any earthquakes.

Page 4: Arc explorer results

The next area I picked that was overdue for an earth-quake was a fault line in the red sea between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. This is because it is on a fault line, which is a hurricane hotspot. The next

reason is that it is on a convergent plate boundary, which generally causes earthquakes.

The next selected are is South ofAlaska and west of WashingtonState. I chose this area becauseit is on a convergent plate boun-dary. The second reason is that there areA lot of concentrated earthquakes in the

area.I believe that theoretically this area should

be experiencing earthquakes periodically.

Page 6: Arc explorer results

The next area that is overduefor an earthquake is near the Caribbean island of Cuba. I think the area that is near the convergent plate boundary is overdue for an earthquake. There are a lot of earthquake concentrations in the area. It is

also on a convergent plate boundary which

causes earthquake if it is active.

The next area I chose is north of Russia. It is the border of the Eurasian and North American plate boundaries. I think that this area is overdue for and earthquake because it is on a convergent plate boundaries and there are no signs of activity. The plate boundary could be inactive however.

Page 8: Arc explorer results

The next area is very over-due for an earthquake in myopinion. This is because the surrounding area is covered by thousands of earthquakes. However the central area has no

earthquakes, even though it appears that the plates are active.

Page 9: Arc explorer results

The next are overdue for anearthquake is on the north side of the island. This is because the surrounding areaand fault lines are covered by earthquakes, however this area has

none.

Page 10: Arc explorer results

The next area I chose was the area on the convergentboundary pictured. I chosethis area because compared to other active convergentboundaries this area had fewearthquakes. I think this area will

experience many more earthquakes in the future.

Page 11: Arc explorer results

The next area I chose isa plate boundary thatis south of South America.I chose this area because the surrounding area is filled with earthquakes, but the earthquakes

seem to thin out near this area. I think this shortage of earthquakes might be due to inactive plate boundaries.

What have you learned about earthquakes and earthquake prediction?I have learned that earthquakes can occur anywhere, and that plate

movement plays the biggest role in earthquakes.

What factors influence earthquake prediction? Some factors that influence earthquake prediction are the location, and the

type of plate boundaries near it. Areas near tectonic plate boundaries are generally more vulnerable to earthquakes. This is because tectonic plates rub against each other and build up pressure which causes earthquakes.

Where on Earth do most of the really big earthquakes strike? My research and analysis of the Arc Explorer map have lead me to the

conclusion that most of earth’s earthquakes occur near earth’s fault lines. This happens because tectonic plates slide past each other causing friction which causes built-up pressure.

The next step in my research is to periodically analyze the map and check my predictions, updating them when necessary.
